He vowed to resist her. She was born to break him. Neither will walk away unchanged.
Aeron Morvain, the immortal Fae King of Death and Shadow, has ruled Sylvaeren with an iron hand for over a century. Forged in war and scarred by loss, he trusts nothing, not the Divine Makers, not prophecy, and certainly not the promise of a mortal queen destined to break him. He intends to claim her for duty, keep her at a distance, and bury his heart where no one can touch it.
Elowyn Thornevale is Human, and betrothed to the man she loves. On the eve of their sacred Embernight union, she is torn from her world and brought to the cold, dangerous court of the Fae King. Although she is meant to obey, she meets command with defiance, fear with fire, and the crown with a refusal to bow.
In a kingdom where whispers insist that the prophesied heir born of their fated bond will unite Sylvaeren at last, Aeron and Elowyn’s connection may become the spark that holds the realm together…
Fayre Kehoe is a German author living in the United Kingdom, where she moved after marrying the love of her life. She writes Fantasy Romance with Heart & Soul for the Dreamers, Believers & Magic-Seekers.
Her debut novel, Death & Shadow, is Book I of Starbound: A Sylvaeren Origins Story, a slow-burn fantasy romance featuring fated mates, enemies-to-lovers tension, a morally grey Fae King, a defiant mortal heroine, found family, court politics, and love built through hard-won trust. Death & Shadow is a story that takes its time, unfolding through layered plot, deep character development, healing, trust, and a slow-burn romance built to be earned.
Fayre’s work is shaped by personal experiences of chronic illness and grief, and by a deep belief in healing, resilience, and becoming yourself again after the world has tried to break you. She writes stories where love is chosen, devotion is earned, and tenderness is treated as strength.
When she is not writing, Fayre can be found buried in worldbuilding notes, collecting inspiration from art and folklore, gaming, watching Korean dramas, or fussing over tiny details with great devotion and minimal shame.
She would be delighted if you visited her website, mildly giddy if you followed her on Instagram, and entirely insufferable with joy if you joined her newsletter through the Forbidden Section of Morvenya Keep.
Thank you to the author for this advanced copy. I don’t feel like I have the right words to fully convey how much I loved this but I’ll try my best. This will probably be long so get ready. The story starts with Aeron, King of Death and Shadow, who is also a very powerful Fae, who kidnaps Elowyn because a propechy foretold of a mortal woman being his mate and bearing his child. It starts off with Elowyn hating him and Aeron looking at her like an object and an annoyance, however, he falls so hard so fast.
Elowyn may be young and naive about certain things but she is smart, witty, brave, caring, mature, and holds her own against Aeron and the fae court. If you like FMCs with maturity and who handle themselves with poise and grace, you will love Elowyn. Aeron goes from brooding, cold, and grumpy to soft for her, romantic, tender, and sweet (but still a hardass to the rest of the world). The romance can only be described in one word: epic. The slow burn tension and yearning was so well done. If you like accidental hand and arm grazes (lots of them) where the tension is palpable, this is the book for you. The wait is definitely worth it when you get to those spicy scenes. Aeron is a feral beast for Elowyn and I loved it 🔥
All of these characters are written so well that they jump off the page. Elowyn and Aeron’s character growth is beautifully done and the side characters are just as interesting and dynamic. Fionn and Tirian are so perfect and supportive of their king and queen. Fionn needs his own book or novella. If you want another character similar to Ridoc and Carrion Swift, you’ll fall in love with Fionn. The one liners he drops are so good and his vulnerability as the story goes on will crack open your heart.
This book was long. Really long. But, I found myself completely lost in it. I didn’t look at the time or how long the chapters were. I just got blissfully consumed by it. I was hooked by it immediately and the pacing was absolutely perfect.
This book had some traumatic, heartbreaking, and emotional moments and delivered the emotional damage I’m always looking for. Aside from that, it was romantic, funny, witty, heartfelt, entertaining, spicy, sweet, and devastating. The ending broke my heart. This is one of those books that puts your emotions through the wringer and threatened to give me a book hangover.
While book 1 builds the characters and sets the stage with talk of the prophecy, I feel like book 2 will have a lot more action and plot and I’m almost certain it will break my heart even further. Fayre is a beautiful talented writer. I can’t believe this is her debut because her talent and storytelling ability are up there with some of the best.
Read this if you like -Fae x humans -Prophecy -An MMC that looks like Legolas -A mature FMC -One horse, one bed -Emotional damage -Accidental hand grazes -Mating bonds -The best found family -Forced proximity -Epic settings, storylines, and characters -Witty banter
If I could rate this more than 5 stars, I would! This is honestly one of my TOP READS of 2026. Fayre Kehoe, my dear, I am beyond grateful for you choosing to share this devastatingly beautiful world with me. This book absolutely shattered me in the most BEAUTIFUL and CHAOTIC ways. If I added up the hours that I actually spent reading it, it would total out to less than 24 hours. This story is THAT captivating. The first chapter hooks you in immediately. Then as you delve further into the book, the hook just sinks deeper and deeper into your heart and soul. I willingly chose to sacrifice sleep and stole every quiet moment I could get just to continue visiting the Sylvaeren world that Fayre has created.
Elowyn, the FMC, is utterly human — gentle, quiet, but also fierce and strong-willed all in one. A natural born leader, who softens the cruel world around her. Aeron, the MMC, is the King of Death & Shadow. He rules with ruthlessness and an iron will, instilling fear to keep the reins on his kingdom and court tight. No one dares to defy or cross him, except for his most trusted — Fionn and Tirian. Fionn is charming, wild, free-spirited, absolutely unhinged in the best ways, but steadfast in his loyalty to the people that he holds close to his heart. Tirian is noble, stoic, complex, but also loving and caring in a quiet way. I will write nothing about the story or plot line itself, because I DO NOT want to spoil a single detail. I want YOU, reading this review, to read this book. This is how much I thoroughly enjoyed it. Also, I just want everyone to feel what as I journeyed through Death & Shadow.
Fayre’s writing style is equal parts beautiful and unhinged — again in the BEST ways. The words just flowed together with each turn of the page. The character development throughout the book is amazing. I have never connected so much to so many characters. I absolutely adore and love Fionn, to the point I would bleed for him. I do hold a special place in my heart for each character though. I felt like I was living in the book itself, as the world building is incredible. Hello, please let me into Sylvaeren and Morvenya Keep! You are in for a roller coaster ride of emotions from devastation to laughing to crying to screaming to smiling to giddiness. It’s all there! I dare say this is one of those books, I wish I could read for the first time over and over again.
Again, thank you Fayre for sending me an ARC. I cannot wait for Book 2, as that cliffhanger ending has left a massive hole in my heart. I need it filled with what happens next!
What to expect: ✨ Fae ✨ Fated Mates ✨ Morally gray MMC ✨ Mortal born FMC ✨ He falls first ✨ Banter ✨ Slow burn ✨ Prophecy ✨ Found family ✨ Book 1 in a trilogy
This good was fantastic. It’s a big book close to 900 pages. But I don’t mind that if the story and characters are good and they didn’t disappoint in this one.
We follow our MMC the immortal Fae King of Death and Shadow Aeron Morvain who rules over Sylvaeren. There is a prophecy hanging over his head of a mortal Queen destined to break him. He doesn’t believe in this prophecy.
I loved Aeron he’s tall dark and handsome and a legend on the battlefield but he’s so closed off. I was getting so frustrated with his choices in the book I just wanted to climb in there and slap him 😂 He finally comes fae to face with this mortal that will be his downfall. And she is beautiful. He can feel the bond pulling at him so he decides to kidnap her and take her to his keep.
"I have taken prisoners with less effort and killed traitors for glancing at me the wrong way. What is one girl to me."
Our FMC Elowyn Thornevale was enjoying herself with her betrothed before being kidnapped by the fae king. Now Elowyn might look sweet and innocent but this woman is witty and stubborn. She goes out of her way to make Aerons life miserable to spite him.
I really enjoyed Elowyns character she finds herself somewhere new and with a different set of rules but she doesn’t lose herself, she knows what she wants and she goes for it. She says what she thinks without a care in the world. Total badass!
"Touch me, and I swear I'll scratch your eyes from your skull."
The side characters in this book were so good! I loved Fionn his banter is top notch 10/10! I was sitting there giggling over some of the things Fionn says.
"Makers save us, it's like I predicted: Romantic torment pending and I'll be here to witness every slow, agonizing step of it."
The brotherhood between Aeron, Fionn and Tirian was great! Loved their bond!
This book has so much tension! The chemistry between to mc’s is crazy!! Sooo good! Loved their relationship. They were literally meant to be together. Love the nicknames they have for each other. The nickname she gave him is golden every time I read it I was giggling!
Fantastic plot full of twists and turns. Very action packed.
The world building was great and beautifully written.
That ending wow!!! Left on a massive cliffhanger. Can’t wait for the next book.
Thank you to the Author for sending me an arc of your book 😊
I have recently gotten into Advanced Reader Copies and was lucky enough to have been selected as one of the ARCs for Death & Shadow. Let me tell you that when I was sick with the flu last week when my body aggressively told me that I needed to rest that Death & Shadow by Fayre Kehoe was the perfect book to help me recover. I could not put this book down.
The world building for this book was incredible as well as the character establishment for getting a feel of who they are, their ethics and morals as well as their temprements. The FMC, Elowyn Thornevale is such an incredible character, I really related to her temprement as being kind and focused on people around her but really related to the way her behavioural tendencies display as people pleasing to the point of her own detriment as well as her stubborn streak.
The relationships are incredibly nuanced between all of the characters and I really appreciated that the bredth of their relationships were explored throughout the years as well as the way they develop throughout the story.
I will not spoil it for you but highly recommend Fayre's debut novel and will be keeping my eyes peeled for the next book in the series. It releases officially on 1 May 2026 on Amazon!
This is a beast of a book at some 900 pages, I thoroughly enjoyed every single minute!
Elowyn our fiesty FMC is fierce, independent and not a door mat in any shape or form. Much to the despair of Aeron the ruthless King of Death and Shadow. Aeron was expecting a meek human, who would fulfil the requirement of the prophecy and nothing more. What he got in Elowyn was a full blown queen in the making, her knows her own mind and isn’t afraid to speak it!
I simply adored how their relationship develops throughout the story. Elowyn makes him pay, many times over in some cases, forcing Aeron to completely evaluate how he approaches things. The chemistry and angst between them both is top notch! Leading to some seriously smoking hawt scenes that left me blushing. The banter between them both was hilarious at times. Such a balanced, well rounded, charismatic relationship which was so well written.
“You complete me, and I am nothing without you.”
The side characters Fionn and Tirian certainly deserve a mention. The stoic Tirian, whose quiet and calm influence is a complete contrast the utter chaos which seems to follow Fionn around wherever he goes.
The plot line was action packed and has everything I love in a Romantasy, and I can.not.wait for the next book!
I was lucky to receive an ARC copy of this book from the author for which I leave my honest review.
I enjoyed this story and appreciated the characters. The FMC has this resilient like strength in the way she carries herself. The MMC while I felt he was a little overbearing in the beginning, slowly unravelled to show a certain level of vulnerability and emotion.
I really loved the supporting characters! I felt they had purpose in progressing the storyline.
The only struggle I had while reading was the length and at some moments, the pace of the book. It’s 900 pages and written in third person, but I felt some chapters were fillers where it could have been cut out to flow better.
All in all, 3.5/5 stars! I would recommend this to anyone who loves slow burn, arranged marriage and fated mates.
I have received an advanced review copy from the author for free, and this is my voluntary and honest review for this book.
I truly enjoyed this very epic, very dark and very romantic story! It tugs at the heart and I found myself teary through much of it. It is the story of Sylvaeren....a world of Fae and Humans. The ruler is Aeron, the King of Death & Shadow who happens to be Fae as are everyone else who are nobles in the kingdom. Like most epic stories, this one starts with a prophesy and not a simple one at that. Said prophesy claims that the Fae king will wed a Human-born woman, and she will give him an heir. However, Aeron has never believed in this prophesy because it also states that this chosen woman will break him. As we all know, prophesies are made of riddles which the characters must try to work out to prevent their world collapsing or destructing.
Aeron and his brother-in-arms travel to the village of Thornevale on the day of Elowyn's birthday...a day he is all too familiar with in order to claim her. Upon seeing her, he feels the tug of a bond which shouldn't exist drawing him into her 'orbit'. Giving her a false name, he briefly speaks to her before watching her being lead off by her childhood sweetheart. Of course, Aeron realises that he can't allow anything to happen and the following night, kidnaps Elowyn and takes her to Morvenya Keep...his stronghold.
Over the course of the book, we see Elowyn's strength and tenacity battle against Aeron, leaving him frustrated. Elowyn, herself, is heartbroken and refuses to accept Aeron due to how he's treated her. In steps Fionn, Aeron's second in command to smooth things over and try to get these two stubborn people to finally see beyond the prophesy and their own walls. Eventually, Aeron and Elowyn let their guards down, and discover love.....allowing for Elowyn to freely choose Aeron for the man he is and not just the 1st King of Sylvaeren. This strengthens the bond which they had both been trying to fight, finally realising they are Fated Mates according to the prophesy.
While their love story begins to unfold, we witness various disturbing events occur....from various nobles questioning the prophesy and demanding that Aeron not wed and crown Elowyn, to a former lover seeking revenge against Aeron whereby, she attempts to hurt Elowyn or even kill her, to Aeron having to break his own banished law in order to save Elowyn's life as he now realises he can't live without her.
Eventually, Elowyn recovers, Aeron formally proposes, and the couple set about to marry, but first Aeron must punish Kaelira for what she had done to Elowyn by executing her prior to the wedding. Once this 'trial' is over, they are free to wed without their 'ghosts' weighing down their happiness.
They wed and then Elowyn is crowned 1st Queen of Sylvaeren. The wedding night witnesses the completion of the mating bond between them and this causes the mating frenzy to take hold of Aeron to the point Fionn forces them to take a 'honeymoon'. But their happiness is short-lived as the days following their return, Elowyn is abducted by none other than Kaelira's younger brother, once again seeking revenge. Due to their bond, Elowyn sends her fear through their bond, instantly waking Aeron who chases after them and rescues his wife after dispatching 9 of the 11 ruffians.
Things return to a relative normality, except Elowyn begins to feel unwell, thinking she's come down with a stomach bug or something. She weakens, becomes lethargic and weary and starts fainting. Of course, she blames the abduction for these symptoms thinking it's her body's way of handling the shock, and Aeron doesn't question her...that is until she collapses in the stables after vomiting into a bucket in front of Fionn. The healer is called and we discover that Elowyn is with child. Through shock, and much joy, everyone who knows celebrate what should have been impossible and Elowyn's health turns around briefly....however, what epic tale can just let them be happy.....eventually, her health once more turns precarious and we discover the babe she carries is all Fae, with a magic stronger than anything the healer has seen before. This causes a crisis of faith between Aeron and Elowyn since neither is willing to compromise on what should happen....terminating the pregnancy or allowing Elowyn to face death in order to produce the heir.....this is where the book ends. What a cliff-hanger to have!
As soon as I completed the book, I was already wishing for the next book to find out what happens to Aeron & Elowyn's story!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was a five star read for me. I could not put this book down! I will be eagerly awaiting the next book.
If you enjoy prophecies and Fae/human worlds this book will not disappoint you. The world building in this book is strong and descriptive as are the characters.
Elowyn the FMC is a young, human woman. She is taken and thrown into the Fae world due to a prophecy. The Fae regard her as weak and fragile. Elowyn demonstrates that although a human body may be weak, the human spirit is not. She is strong in mind, stubborn and determined. She is also kind, caring and carries a warmth within her that the other characters respond to. She also has a tendency to people please which I think readers will identify with.
The MMC is Aeron the King of Shadow and Death and is responsible for her abduction from the human village. He is following the prophecy, but is doubtful of its validity. His character changes and softens throughout the story.
There is spice in this book, however, it is done in a beautiful context of a loving relationship.
As the journey unfolds so does the development of the characters. They change and involve as we all do when we learn through others and new experiences.
There are several other characters involved in this book which play an important role in the story’s development. Fionn and Tirian are Aeron’s brothers in arms. Their character’s are also well developed and enjoyable. Elowyn’s ladies in waiting and the healer are enjoyable also as side characters.
This was an amazing read. Well, done to the author Fayre Kehoe.
I was lucky enough to get an early copy from the author, and wow, am I glad I did!Seriously, buckle up for this one. Imagine a super intense Fae King, colder than a winter morning, who suddenly finds his meticulously laid plans for an heir completely derailed. Why? Because the universe throws a spirited mortal woman into his path as his *fated mate*. He's got this ancient prophecy breathing down his neck, threatening to shatter everything he knows, and his grand solution to fulfill it involves... kidnapping his destined partner. As you can imagine, things don't exactly go according to plan! His steely resolve starts to crack as his heart begins to thaw, and he finds himself unexpectedly trying to win over this woman who's absolutely determined to deny the undeniable connection between them. Aeron and Elowyn's journey is an absolute rollercoaster – they're both wrestling with intense, unfamiliar emotions, battling against a destiny that seems set in stone, and navigating a rather chilly, complex kingdom, all while trying to defy a prophecy neither of them wants anything to do with. The author's writing is absolutely captivating; I was completely swept away by the storytelling. And the characters? So richly developed! The world-building is just incredible, pulling you right into the heart of this magical, dangerous realm. Honestly, you're going to have a seriously tough time putting this book down once you start. The only bummer is that now I'm stuck waiting with bated breath for the next one!
Wow, this was much lenghtier than I anticipated! I really didn’t mind though, because the storytelling was absolutely lovely!
I loved the worldbuilding and the intricate way this world works (or doesn’t work in some cases). We get a vague prophecy, a kidnapping, a broody & reluctant king, an unwilling bride, and a slooow burn romance. A romance that will have you kicking your feet whenever something happens between Aeron and Elowyn. Really, any sort of conversation or tension had me giddy about these two.
I loved Fionn and Tirian as well. Technically they’re side characters, but they didn’t feel like side characters. Both of them brought so much to the story in their own way. Where Tirian brought rational (and slightly terrifying) calm to the table, Fionn brought chaos, but a good kind of chaos. Both of them made me laugh and earned my respect.
The story is not all happy rainbows and glitter, there is a darker side to it as well. Court politics and drama turning dangerous, not really knowing who to trust and who might stab you in the back.
So the story had a bit of everything, it sure had me feeling all kinds of things. That ending wrecked me and had me tearing up! So be prepared for a bit of emotional damage with this cliffhanger.
First, I was very excited to receive an advanced copy of Death and Shadow and to step into the world of Sylvaeren! The characters are well-developed, each bringing a different dynamic to the story and the chosen family they create.
Be prepared, this is a long book and I feel some of it was too drawn out for my taste. However, once I got past the 77% mark, the story’s pace picked up and I was hooked. The story of Elowyn and Aeron contains so much emotion and so many twists and turns. This book made me laugh and had me tear up. Fionn is most definitely my favorite character, but the story wouldn’t be complete without Tirion’s unwavering steadiness and loyalty.
I cannot wait to see what the Divine Makers have in store for the future of these characters and this world!
Death and Shadow is a beautifully written book — sweeping, emotional, and crafted with real care. It opens incredibly strongly, with wonderfully drawn characters and a narrative that pulls you straight in. Elowyn, our fierce FMC, is a breath of fresh air. She endures the unimaginable, and watching her grow into her own power is genuinely a triumph of character development.
But the sheer length of this novel works against it. There are entire stretches — chapters upon chapters of conversations — that, while lovely in isolation, don’t actually move the story forward. By the time I reached chapter 96, I found myself skim‑reading out of frustration because the momentum had stalled.
With some thoughtful editing, this could be a truly exceptional book. As it stands, I’m not sure I could face a second instalment at this length.
I really enjoyed this romantasy overall. It pulls you in quickly with a strong opening and an engaging pace that kept me invested.
It is on the longer side, and it felt like it could have been split into two books, but the main storyline held my attention throughout.
The romance was the highlight for me emotional, compelling, and not what I expected. Just a heads up, it does lean spicy.
There are a few side storylines that didn’t add anything for me that I chose to skip, ( took away from the main story a bit) and the ending slowed a bit, but overall it was still an good read.
A solid romantasy with a strong central love story.
3.5 rounded up. The FMC is very opinionated and stands up for herself at all times which I absolutely LOVED. She’s not afraid to speak her mind or stand up to the scary shadow Daddy. The side characters honestly aren’t even side characters, you fall in love with all of them.
Honestly I loved the storyline and the characters but this book felt extremely long. This is book one of a planned trilogy and maybe it could have been a 4 or 5 book series. There was a lot of development but some parts slowed while others I devoured. The change in pace was nice but I felt mini reading slumps during this book.
I was so grateful to sign up for this arc. I was interested in this book for a couple reasons I was told it was a slow burn, fated mates-enemies-lovers which I LOVEEE a good enemies to lovers trope and this was a fae book which i also loveeee a good fae book! This book was entirely what I was expecting. Was it great yes were there mistakes of course it’s an arc but I have to say I really enjoyed though! If you love a good enemies to lovers and far book with a morally grey man then definitely this is so up your alley! 🗡️🪞
I had the privilege of receiving this book and an ARC and I have nothing but good things to say about it! StarBound death and shadow reminded me so much of a court of thorne and roses mixed with a bit of twilight as well so if you are a fan of both of those series you will LOVE this book! This was my first book by Fayre Kehoe and it won’t be my last I am excited to read more of this series and i need book 2 like yesterday! Do yourself a favor and read this book but be warned you will be wanting more after you’ve finished!
Death & Shadow was such an addictive read. The world feels vivid, the tension is strong, and the characters were so easy to get attached to. I loved the mix of dark fantasy atmosphere, slow-burn romance, banter, and emotional moments, and the side characters added so much personality to the story too. This is a great pick if you like fae romantasy with heart, chemistry, found family vibes, and a story that keeps you turning the pages.
ACOTAR wishes! I absolutely loved this book! Intense emotions! Fantastic world building! This is the book that has all the right things you wanted from other Romantasy series! Must read!
Author provides comprehensive list of trigger warnings. I greatly appreciate that. Please check them out either in the book or on her site.
I was lucky enough to read an ARC copy of this debut fantasy romance novel that includes fated mates, enemies to lovers, and a morally gray MMC. If you are looking for a relationship similar to that shared between Saeris and Kingfisher in Quicksilver by Callie Hart, you will fall in love with the banter and tension between Elowyn and Aeron.
This book dives right into the prophetic love story between our MMC: Aeron Morvain; the King of Death and Shadows, and our FMC: Elowyn Thornevale; blissfully ignorant of Aeron’s royal presence and betrothed to another. Elowyn ends up kidnapped and ripped from the only mortal life she has ever known to end up in the immortal fae kingdom on Embernight: the most anticipated night of the year. Will the prophecy be fulfilled or will Elowyn and Aeron resist their fate?
What worked: I really enjoyed the banter in this book, especially between Aeron, Fionn, and Tirian. They were the perfect side characters and they fit right into the story. Kehoe didn't waste any time jumping right into the plot and subsequently the romance aspect of this story. The world building and the relationships that developed were good as well, not feeling forced. From the start, it was clear what was going on and the predicament that the King found himself in. Same with Elowyn. I quickly fell in love with Elowyn’s character and moral compass, and I was hooked on the reluctant enemies to lovers scenario that was laid out.
What didn’t: Although the ending of this book dove further into the plot and world development focused around our FMC, I found it to be a bit long for what it was. I found that when events were happening, I was hooked and did not want to put this book down, but I also felt like there were some parts that were drawn out. In between the events that happened in the story, it seemed like there was some filler information and dialogue that I don’t think needed to be there. It caused the story and the feelings of the characters to be more repetitive than needed since Kehoe did well explaining the story, the filler information didn’t need to be there.
Favorite Quote:
“You two are going to be the death of me,” Aeron muttered, utterly exhausted. “No,” Tirian objected. “Elowyn is, and we are here to provide colour commentary.”
Overall, I think Kehoe did a great job on this novel, and I am so grateful that I was selected to read an ARC copy. I think this book would be great for fans of Quicksilver by Callie Hart, with the romance a little more drawn out and those who don’t mind a longer novel.
SAVE YOUR DATE LADIES, YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS THIS ONE😌
I randomly came across Fayre’s Instagram… and somehow ended up having the chance to be one of her beta readers and honestly, I still can’t believe it !
This was my first time ever being a beta reader, and I loved every second of it. Getting to read the story early, exchange with her (she’s literally the sweetest, I adore her✨💜), and give a bit of feedback along the way made the whole experience so special😍
And the book… I’m not even exaggerating when I say it’s so addictive. Especially for a debut novel, it’s seriously impressive ! She is a genius !
At the beginning, we meet Aeron, the Fae King of Death and Shadow. He’s COLD, closed off, and completely disconnected from emotions after everything he’s been through (we do love a traumatised shadow daddy👀). And there’s this prophecy saying a human woman is supposed to become his queen and give him an heir which makes no sense because humans and fae aren’t even supposed to be able to have children ! He ignored it for years… until he couldn’t anymore.
So he goes straight to Elowyn’s village… on her wedding day. Yes. He KIDNAPS her right before she marries the man she loves and locks her away. Not exactly the dream introduction😭
But don’t worry ! Elowyn is NOT weak. Not even close. She doesn’t just accept her fate, she fights it. She challenges him, refuses to submit, and honestly makes his life a living hell, which I absolutely loved😂
Their dynamic ?! So good. The tension, the constant back and forth, the way Aeron tries (and royally fails😂) to get under her skin or even seduce her… it’s just chef’s kiss. And the banter ? I laughed so many times, it’s so well written. Fionn, girls, he is sooo sweet and he especially made some scenes even better, I loved him.
What I really liked too is that behind all the tension and humor, there’s something bigger at stake. This prophecy, this bond between them… something’s off and you need to pay attention to what’s coming! Because the peace Aeron has always tried to keep is about to break. For good. Dark and dangerous forces are close and our hearts are not ready for the war😩
For a first novel, this is amazing. I’m so excited to see what Fayre does next, because she clearly has something special.
This book has everything you crave :
🔮Dangerous prophecy 🤫Kidnapping ✨Fated mates 🖤Grumpy x sunshine ⚔️Political stakes 🫶🏼Found family 🔥Slow burn 😏Banter
Thank you so much my darling Fayre for trusting me✨💜 with all my love and support🥰
Review of ARC from the author. I ended up having a lot of feelings about this one—and honestly, I did enjoy it.
The story drops you into a fae world built around prophecy, where King Aeron is basically betting everything on something that may or may not even work. His future hinges on a mortal girl, Elowyn, who is taken from her world and thrown into something she never asked for. And you feel that immediately—her anger, her resistance, that sense of being trapped. It definitely gave me A Court of Thorns and Roses vibes in the beginning, with that tension of being kept somewhere against your will… and then slowly, frustratingly, starting to feel something for the very person you should hate.
And that slow burn? It’s slow slow—but in a good way. The tension between them builds in a way that feels natural, and when it finally starts shifting, it’s actually really satisfying. There’s something really beautiful in how their relationship grows out of survival, trust, and learning who they are—not just individually, but together.
That said… this book is long. Like, really long. And while the writing itself is solid and descriptive, there were definitely sections that felt drawn out. I kept thinking that parts of this could have been tightened up or even split into two books, because there’s a stretch in the middle where the plot kind of stalls. It’s not that nothing is happening—it’s more that everything is being explained in so much detail that the momentum gets lost a bit. Although the detail also made me keep reading so again mixed feelings!
By the end, it shifts into something more focused on her stepping into her role and what her future looks like, especially with everything the prophecy set in motion. And while it felt like the main plot slowed down, the ending definitely opens the door for more. It left me wondering what’s next—what kind of queen she’ll become, and what the future holds for her and everything they’ve built against the odds.
Overall, I really did like this book. I just wish it had been a little more condensed in places. But if you like fae worlds, prophecy-driven stories, and a slow-burn romance that actually takes its time, this one is still worth picking up.
Thank you to the author - for the ARC and for writing this book! This book was well-written - honestly beautiful in an earth-shattering and delicious way. It did help that this book included some of my favorite tropes - enemies to lovers, morally gray characters, forced proximity, and slow burn. I really enjoyed this book as a whole, but I did have a lot of thoughts (and feelings) about this book. Aeron Morvain is our lovable, morally gray Death and Shadow king - and Elowyn is more than just his match, she’s his bonded mate. I really loved the dynamic between all of the characters, including Fionn and Tirian. The chemistry between the two main characters was great - and it was nice to see a stubborn FMC who did not bend. The surprising found family element? Also gold. The worldbuilding was honestly phenomenal. The writing itself was very descriptive and sensory which really added to the atmosphere and made everything much easier to imagine. It really was like I was there with everyone - I really enjoy descriptive books in general and this book was great in that regard. This book really takes its time so you can get a good grip of the world and the people in it. That being said, this book was definitely slower paced all throughout - and while I do love a good slow burn (as I said, it’s one of my favorite tropes), it really felt like a lot of the book was too drawn out. It felt like some spots could have been shortened or cut altogether in order to make the book shorter, because as it is, it is 900 pages. It was a little hard to stay engaged at times while reading, especially as some parts also felt repetitive. Aeron and Elowyn seemed to have the same repeating arguments and banter at times. I do really enjoy banter and I did enjoy their interactions as a whole, but it did drag a lot. Perhaps this book could have been split into two books or simply shortened as mentioned previously. Maybe more action scenes as well could have helped with the pacing and such. That being said, I still genuinely enjoyed this book - I’m really a sucker for enemies to lovers and all things morally gray. The ending, despite the already long book, does leave you wanting more, especially with that cliffhanger! I definitely will tune in for more - I am ready for book two!
Amazing start to a series I hope to get the privilege to read all of! Get ready, strap in, this is a long one, I could have wrote a book about how good this book is!
Elowyn is a human girl living a peaceful life in her village on the verge of marrying the boy she’s loved forever—until a mysterious stranger arrives and changes everything.
Aeron, the Fae King of Sylverean has known his fate due to prophecy, that he must claim a human bride, his fated mate, to secure his kingdom’s future.
This is a reluctant queen, enemies-to-lovers story done so well I couldn’t put it down. At the start of the book, I genuinely couldn’t see how the story could move past the “enemies” stage, I was ready to throw Aeron off a cliff. But by the end, he became one of the most affectionate and loving MMCs. It’s not “touch her and die”—it’s “disrespect her and die.” His devotion is intense, possessive, protective, and utterly swoon-worthy.
From the very first chapter, I felt completely immersed. I laughed, cried, had my heart broken, and watched it piece itself back together throughout the book.
The brotherhood between Aeron, Fionn, and Tirian adds so much warmth to the story. Their bond feels genuine, and the supporting cast as a whole creates a beautiful found-family which makes me want to know them all even more.
The romance is slow burn and agonising that had me completely on edge and boy when it hit it was utter 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. The bond between them develops gradually and feels earned and becomes an epic love set against a kingdom teetering on the brink—full of fae-human politics, deceit, jealousy, and betrayal.
Elowyn is a standout heroine: fierce, strong, stubborn, and defiant in all the best ways in world where humans are thought of as less. I absolutely loved her.
This book is packed with emotion, humour, and incredible writing—it’s a story that truly makes you feel everything with the main focus being the romance and mate bond. I finished a 900 page book in 48 hours. What else can I say?
Lyrical, rich world-building meets the truest enemies-to-lovers storyline I’ve ever read in Starbound: A Sylvaeren Origins Story.
Complex, memorable characters all play active roles in this story, as they build unexpected, tender relationships. The embodiment of conviction, quiet strength, and resilience, Elowyn holds her own in a court of Fae who (almost) all see humanity as a weakness.
The King of Death and Shadow, Aeron, is utterly haunted by prophecy and crushed by responsibility, steeling him. While there is undying loyalty to the King from Fionn and Tirian, I really appreciated that there is not unquestioning loyalty to their brother-in-arms – and their cutting delivery of some home truths when needed!
The lore of Sylvaeren is thoughtful and intricate. From territories and lineages to seasons and festivals, Fayre crafts an elaborate sense of place. Here, I loved that these details weren’t solely reserved for Fae, but humans too.
This story found me when I needed it most. Signing up to be an ARC reader felt like a gift from my past self to my current self, reminding me of the strength it takes not only to rebuild, but also the magic in slowing down.
An exploration of humanity in a Fae world, this is a story with heart, sharp wit, and bounds of potential. A truly fantastic debut novel that I recommend to anyone seeking an immersive journey through a fantasy realm.
This is a dark romantasy, so please check the trigger warnings.
Thank you to the author, Fayre, for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
thank you to the incrible author of this amazing story for providing me with an earc in exchange for an honest review!
wow, this was probably the easiest 6 stars i’ve ever given a book, ever! from early on in the book i predicted it would be 5 stars but the story just kept getting better and better! when i learned of the plot of this book i knew it was right up my street! morally grey mmc, fated mates, slow burn romance and enemies to lovers, yes please!
first i need to talk about the characters, aeron is such a complex character, at the beginning he shocks you and as a king who shows no mercy and is so cold, you immediately want to know more about him and i love that we learn more about him and his past throughout the book. elowyn, our fmc is brave and strong and fiery and i love that it isn’t an immediate love at first sight, their romance is slow and filled with suspense and tension (which also makes the spicy scenes when we get to them so worth the wait) their love is gentle and bright and dangerous and just everything! fionn and tirian are 2 completely different characters yet the compliment each other so well! i love how cheeky and loud and over the top fionn is and how quiet and observant and fierce tirian is.
this book has so much suspense and tension and i couldn’t stop reading it but i also was reading it so slowly because i just didnf want it to end. there were so many soft and emotional moments and i felt all of the emotions reading this story, i just had to know what was going to happen next! i can’t wait for book 2 and i can’t wait to see how this story plays out.
please add this book to your tbrs, you are in for a real treat!🤍
Wow… this book gave me such a nostalgic feeling in the best way.
Reading this honestly took me back to the kind of fantasy stories that completely pull you in and don’t let go. The level of detail and the length of the story made it feel so immersive. Nothing felt rushed, nothing felt skipped over, and the slow burn was sssssllllooowwww! You truly get to sit in the world, understand it, and experience everything alongside the characters.
That was probably my favorite part. The way it was written allowed you to feel what the characters were feeling. You get to know them on a deeper level, understand their struggles, their emotions, the tension, and their growth. It felt like you were right there with them through everything.
The worldbuilding was beautifully done. It was descriptive in a way that made everything come to life without feeling overwhelming. You could picture the settings, the court, the dynamics, and really get lost in the story. It felt very classic fantasy in the best sense, which is what gave me that nostalgic feeling.
If I had to say one thing I would have loved more of, it would be even deeper exploration into the different villages, the lifestyles between humans and Fae, and more of the overall history of the world. There is already so much there, but I would have happily taken even more because the world is that interesting.
Overall, this book was fantastic. It was immersive, emotional, and beautifully detailed. It reminded me why I love romantic fantasy in the first place.
I would absolutely love to continue this series and honestly hope to be part of the ARC team for future books because this was such an enjoyable read.
This book started out really strong. The concept immediately pulled me in, and I was fully immersed from the very beginning. Aeron, our MMC, is a fae king who claims his human queen due to a prophecy. She’s taken without her consent and resists him every step of the way, which made their dynamic interesting right from the start. As they’re forced into proximity, their relationship slowly begins to shift and develop and I did feel like their chemistry was earned over time. The writing itself is beautiful, very descriptive, but it leans heavily into world and plot building. While I appreciate the depth, the book is quite long and because of that, the pacing felt uneven at times. Some sections could have been tightened, as they occasionally slowed the momentum and pulled me out of the story a little. That said, I really loved the side characters. The found family element was a standout for me, and Fionn especially added so much charm and humor. I genuinely laughed out loud at some of his moments. I do wish there had been more action throughout the book. The scenes we did get, especially the throne room were incredible (gory perfection, honestly👌🏼), and I would have loved to see more of that to balance out some of the slower, more detailed sections. Overall, I did enjoy this story and I’m definitely curious to see where it goes next. I think it has a really strong foundation and the potential to become something truly great with a bit more tightening in pacing. I’d absolutely pick up the next book.
I was lucky enough to be selected to be a part of the street members for Starbound and had access to an early copy of this incredible book. Death & Shadow Starbound promises you a journey of adventure, romance and secrets. After reading this book I can safely say it delivers on all of those points and way more.
I don’t think I’ve ever read a book faster than I have this one. Not only did it leave me intrigued to read more but also left me wondering how the writer can even improve on this book. I know in the age where book series like Acotar and TOG are everything it’s hard to come in as a new writer, but I think Fayre has excelled in writing a story that excites me after coming of a high of other series.
I was desperate for another book series to put my teeth in and I’ve enjoyed this book so much that I can’t wait to see what else she brings out. As a writer Fayre really cares about her book and her writers and I’ve had the pleasure to have a really in depth talk with her about her book. I’m so excited to see all the things come to live that she has mentioned (as I can’t say anymore because of spoilers) but please I recommend anyone who loves a good enemy to lovers book that is filled with action and transports you to another world to give this book a read when it comes out you will not be disappointed.
From one book lover to another I will see you all in Sylvaeren.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Received as an ARC from the lovely Author
I absolutely devoured Starbound: Death and Shadow by Fayre Kehoe — this book had me hooked from the very first page 😭🔥
Enemies to lovers? YES PLEASE. Forced proximity? Obsessed. Fae king x human girl? Say less.
The tension in this book is insane — he’s completely obsessed while she can’t stand him, and the slow burn is so intense it actually hurts (in the best way) 😩
Honestly… watching him realise just how badly he’s fallen while everything keeps going wrong? Delicious chaos.
There’s drama, jealousy, high stakes, and so many moments where I was just sitting there like “sir… what are you DOING??” 💀
The romance is emotional, messy, and completely consuming — the kind that builds and builds until you’re desperate for them to just give in already. And when it finally pays off?? Worth it.
Also had such strong Beauty and the Beast vibes, mixed with that dark, obsessive fae energy I love ✨
And the side characters?? Absolutely added so much — I’m especially obsessed with Fionn 😂
✨ Tropes: – Enemies to lovers – Forced proximity – Fae x human – Obsessive MMC – Slow burn – Beauty & the Beast vibes – Found family
