this is the time of year i float reviews of fun books that would make nice presents. not for me, i already have them. i’m just being a kindly readers’ advisory holiday angel.

 photo IMG_1108_zpsdsvkcqpf.jpg

is there any creature more dignified and majestic than the cat?

 photo IMG_1117_zpsq4snrvky.jpg

such grace, such poise, such … moistness

 photo IMG_1107_zps2dwfht0f.jpg

carli davidson is the genius-goddess who brought us both Shake and Shake Puppies, two excellent and hilarious books. but as everyone knows - everything that is good with dogs is even better with cats.

 photo IMG_1111_zpsjcursazm.jpg

of course, getting cats to comply is the trick. you can toss a dog into a kiddie pool and it'll be happy as pie to shake it off and still be your pal. cats are typically less interested in water and being … discomposed. and they hold grudges, boy.

 photo IMG_1121_zpskilqbabp.jpg

but carli davidson is - again - a genius-goddess and she came up with the solution: rather than "dumping water on them," which you can totally do with dogs, but you do it to cats at your own risk, she brought in a professional who administered ear cleaning fluid to these little kitties and then ….SHAKE!!!

 photo IMG_1118_zpsxp1efqm2.jpg

so they got their ears cleaned, which considering most of the cats in the book were shelter/rescue cats and had been living on the mean streets, was actually good for them and not just a trick to make them make goofy faces for our amusement

 photo IMG_1106_zpsbvwj0eau.jpg

but that - yes - also had the result of making them make goofy faces for our amusement.

 photo IMG_1113_zpsiskusm1y.jpg

as davidson says, It's amazing what you can achieve with some catnip and a laser pointer. like turn cats into straight-up zombies rarrrrr

 photo IMG_1114_zpsilie3avp.jpg

 photo IMG_1124_zpsre4xfe6o.jpg

 photo IMG_1125_zpscsobdrfw.jpg

 photo IMG_1105_zpsb0pqgtgf.jpg

the book contains 64 cats in the middle of 128 shakes and it is both adorable

 photo IMG_1115_zpsjnugp1i0.jpg

and grotesque

 photo IMG_1119_zps5wl98cre.jpg

and it also contains plenty of reminders about how grateful and sweet shelter cats, particularly older shelter cats, are and reminders about spaying and neutering and having lots of cats to love, even if some of our longings are never to be:

When I was a child, I walked into my local animal shelter and with all the self-assurance of a seven-year-old requested its largest cat. What I really wanted was a tiger, but when I learned the unfortunate truth that my parents were unable to support this dream, I figured I'd settle for the next best thing.

if you can't have a tiger, having lots of cats is a pretty good substitute because maybe one day you will walk in on them and discover they are secretly transformers and it'll be like having one giant cat with SO MANY FACES. which i don't think is horrifying, but maybe it is. oh, well.

here are more cats shaking!

 photo IMG_1120_zps1pqijsrm.jpg

 photo IMG_1109_zpswdzqezqc.jpg

 photo IMG_1110_zps4imf2828.jpg

now go out and buy this book and buy a bunch of cats and do cute things with them and make a book of you doing cute things with them and i will review it!

come to my blog!

I'm a dog person, not a cat person. But I love photography. If you have a friend who loves cats or loves photography, this is a great book to give as a gift. Each page is a different cat shaking water off. (See other reviews for example pictures).

Davidson does a great job of talking about the importance of adopting cats from shelters and the importance of keeping cats indoors.

She actually got the cats to shake NOT by dumping water on them - that would be cruel - but by giving them a much needed ear cleaning. That fluid you see is not water, but instead ear-cleaning fluid.

The cats are credited in the back. Many don't even have names but are labeled Rescue 1, Rescue 12, etc. etc.

Another enjoyable, entertaining book that brings tons of laughs. While I am more of a dog lover, the cats in this book were funny. In fact, they just might be more funny then the dogs and puppies in the other books. Yet, there were some pictures of some of the cats that made them look outright possessed. What with no faces and evil looks in their eyes. However the pictures were still entertaining. What I really liked were the ones with their tongues sticking out or the ones with one eye closed. I could spend hours looking through all of the pictures in this book. Thus the reason this book makes a good table top book as you will want to keep it out on the table for friends and guests to look at as well. A good conversation starter.

I don't think I can really say I read this book -- it doesn't have a lot of words -- but I certainly looked at it with a great deal of enjoyment when I was shelving it, and I guess that counts. I love the fact that it is pet centric gift book season. I especially love that so many of the cats in this book just look utterly goofy and ugly which is a great counterpoint to the arrogant "I'm more together than you" attitude of the cats I live with.

There’s a whole lot of shakin’ going on in this book! All kinds of cats shaking their heads, with photographer Carli Davidson catching them in all aspects of the shaking. Eyes squinted, teeth bared, and tongues out, these are not glamour poses! But all the cats are still adorable. The author explains how she got the cats to shake, many with a needed ear cleaning, and she goes on to promote the adoption of rescue cats. This is a great book for cat lovers as well as for people who appreciate unusual photography.

The cats aren't nearly as funny looking as the dogs, I think because their faces (in certain breeds) are not nearly as loose. But, it's still cute and still funny, so still a win!

A nice follow-up to Shake. I enjoyed the cat pictures here even more than the dog pictures of her earlier book, partly because the cats frozen in mid-shake look somehow cuter than their canine counterparts. A lovely book.

This is a darling book! In her book, Davidson showcases images of cats in mid-shake. This book is not only a cat photography book, but it is a book about pet adoption, awareness, and population control.
Davidson is a supporter of the Oregon Humane Society, The Pixie Project, and Panda Paws Rescue. I highly recommend this book!

Thank you, Carli Davidson. You have a new fan. :)

A fun book for cat lovers. Cats often give off the aura of being regal, elegant and poised but in this book, they are anything but...and it's funny. Okay, sometimes it is grotesque.... but mostly funny!
Kudos for the author for promoting adoption of cats from shelters, including those that are seniors, disabled or Feline hiv positive. And also promoting sterilisation.
Some of the cats photographed are shelter cats waiting to be adopted, some are the cats of the author's friends, and one is a very special internet sensation.

Some of these pictures are amazing quality but in the shake process....the cats look monstrous and distorted or deformed.

Little to no reading but you do find out all the cats were treated humanely and what got them to shake was an ear cleaning and a nail cleaning so the shook off that horrid human interaction and the photographer got the shots she needed for the book.

Adorable and funny. I liked how pairing two shots of each animal, one on each facing page, enhanced the feeling of movement in the photos. And I was disproportionately grateful for the section at the back explaining how she won over the cats & got them to shake without unfairly stressing them out (completely with pics of her grooming the kitties and feeding them treats).

Ever seen a cat shake their head and or body? Well this author did an entire book on catching these lovable funny cats doing just that. Some of the photos are hilarious. Carli tells of the importance of Spaying /Neutering your cats and how important it is to adopt from a shelter rather than getting from a breeder.

This is more of a picture book, but with what the author has wrote you can see she is very compassionate when it comes to cats. The cats in this book are from shelters and have either diabetes, or are FIV+. Her photos are AMAZING!!

A good book for what it is, but the cats don't look nearly as happy as the dogs did in Shake. I've noticed this a lot with cats in general, though - it can be the prettiest, most good-natured cat but sometimes they just don't photograph well.

Shake Cats by Carli Davidson

I don't read a lot of non-fiction. This book is amusing. It is a compilation of photos of frisky felines. Cats of all sizes, colors and furry dispositions are captured showing their stuff. We have not had cats for years but remember ours fondly. We currently our grandparents (?) to two funny furballs. One appears to love dress up and the other loves to lay under your body when you are doing a plank. Both have typical cat quirkiness.

I recommend the book to all lovers of quirky cats.

I loved the version of this book with dogs, but I found this one a wee bit disturbing. While the dogs looked cute shaking their heads with their floppy ears, the cats looked deranged, possessed, and/or in pain while shaking. I'm sure they were not at all in pain as the photographer is very much an animal lover. All cats are adorable, but I'm not sure they were the right species to be subjects in this type of art.

Cats shaking off some liquid in a very undignified way! I love all the grumpy expressions and poses of the ears, eyes, and tongues. The author has some nice messages about adopting cats as well. This is good for a quick laugh or smile.
