Rate this book
Archie Harpoon was born into a family of fearsome pirates, but he has a secret that could get him tossed overboard.

While the rest of the Harpoon crew rely on grit, grumbles, and ruthless pirating skills to get a job done, Archie often relies on clever thinking and books. He’s curious, kind, hopeful, and worst of all in a pirate’s eyes… happy.

In a world where pirates believe happiness is a weakness, Archie’s gentle heart makes him stand out in all the wrong ways. But when ancient sea secrets begin to stir, and a long-lost power resurfaces—one whispered about in pirate legends—Archie discovers that the very thing that sets him apart may be the greatest strength of all.

As danger rises and the fate of pirate kind hangs in the balance, Archie must decide whether to hide who he is or embrace it. Could a happy heart truly unlock a power mighty enough to command the seas? And could one unlikely boy be the key to saving the very world that doubts him?

For the Love of Pirates is a light-hearted, magical adventure filled with daring escapades, nautical humor, and swashbuckling fun. Beneath the laughs and thrills lies a heartfelt message of belonging, courage, and discovering your purpose, even when it looks different from everyone else’s. Perfect for young readers and families alike, this whimsical tale invites all land-lovers and sea-roamers to climb aboard and set sail on an unforgettable journey.

This was such a fun story that I started reading with all three of my kids, but it quickly turned into a special nightly read with my oldest. It was perfect for my 10-year-old, and we both looked forward to continuing the adventure each night.

We absolutely loved the main character, Archie. He’s a sweet young boy who feels like an outcast in his pirate family because he’s different — he’s actually a nice pirate. While he may not be like the others, Archie proves he’s brave as he sets out on a wild journey across the seas filled with twists and turns.

Along the way Archie befriends a monkey named Bones, encounters incredible creatures like sirens and beautiful manta rays, and even comes across the infamous pirate Blackbeard. My son and I thoroughly enjoyed following Archie’s adventure and can’t wait to see where his journey takes him next.

I also loved the little details in this book. At the beginning there’s a really cool map of the Doom Seas, created by the author as if Archie drew it himself. There are even word definitions at the bottom of some pages, marked with a skull and crossbones instead of a typical asterisk — such a creative touch! ☠️

Overall, this was a great, adventurous read for kids and families, and one we truly enjoyed reading together

Arch is a young boy in a family of pirates who don’t tend to like things such as happiness, curiosity, or things that aren’t swashbuckling. They’ve traveled the harsh seas Arch’s whole life in search of the Eye. The treasure with a power so great, that Arch’s family isn’t the only one searching, so is the rival captain Black Heart. Arch’s quest for the Eye leads him to many different adventures and he begins to develop more appreciation for what makes him different from the mean pirates. Michelle Weeks has created a story that appeals to all ages, one that satisfies your need for a good and classic tale of pirates. She has built a world where pirates were created by a fallen Guardian in attempt to make the sea superior to land. With delightful alliteration, pirate themes throughout, consistent and unique characters, relevant themes like belonging and family. I also really appreciated the different backgrounds of Arch’s parents and the depth his mother’s backstory provided to the story. This story reminded me of the Croods if they were pirates, along with books like the Land of Stories that can be enjoyed by all ages. Go check it out!

This was such a light-hearted and refreshing read, especially in a genre that’s usually packed with relentless action and predictable pirate tropes. Pirate stories often lean into darkness—greed, bloodshed, and ruthless treasure hunts—but this book was a delightful exception.
The idea of a happy, slightly out-of-place pirate felt wonderfully original. Archie was absolutely adorable, and I loved how he embraced who he truly was instead of forcing himself into the mold of a traditional pirate. That quiet confidence in accepting his reality made him even more endearing.
The Harpoons felt like a genuine, warm-hearted family, and each character was thoughtfully written. The story flowed naturally, with vivid scenery that made you want to set sail and explore the world alongside them. It was filled with charming, playful moments that balanced adventure with heart.
Overall, it was a perfect read for me, and I’m genuinely looking forward to the second installment.

Piratical whimsy at its best

Now this is one of those books where you feel like you’re within the story itself due to the incredible storytelling and vivid imagery.

I felt like I was sailing on the high seas, adventuring and hearing Uncle Timber’s pearls of wisdom.
I felt like I was fleeing through the forest (both times) lungs gasping and legs failing.
I felt like I was in the ocean depths, holding my breath and hoping for a miracle.

I wish I could wrap Archie in my arms and fill him with confidence.
I wish I had siblings like Brutus, Ruby and Lily to run riot with.
I wish, oh golly gosh do I wish, I owned Aunt Nora’s coat.

This story will hold space in my heart, not only for its piratical whimsy, but for its heart and soul. This is a story for your whole family. Your kids will love it and the little pirate still longing for epic sea adventures in your heart will love it just as much.

I love it! This book is a swashbuckling, magical adventure with a lot of heart! Falling perfectly into the middle-grade fantasy fiction genre, it uses the beloved 'black sheep of the family' and 'the chosen one' tropes. I love how it swaps out angry pirates for clever thinking, kind hearts, and wonderful nautical humor. It is the perfect refreshing read-aloud for young readers and families, and adults will enjoy it just as much. The book is filled with memorable lines, but my absolute favorite funny quote has to be: 'In a world where pirates believe happiness is a weakness, Archie’s gentle heart makes him stand out in all the wrong ways.' Highly recommend!

For the Love of Pirates is a fun story about pirates, specifically a pirate misfit, Archie. It gave me "How to Train Your Dragon" vibes in the best way possible. I found the writing style to be charming with clever puns. Easy to read! I haven't finished yet but I couldn't help but share my thoughts!
