Miss Sophia Shaw could see ghosts. It’d been a particular characteristic of hers since childhood and as she’d grown, she’d gotten used to the laughs and the stares. Trying to hide her oddities became as natural as hiding in a corner at a ball. But now, with her mother falling victim to a slow and grueling illness, and her mind tormented by the ghosts of people days before they’re murdered, she’s losing the stability she worked so hard to maintain.
With the help of the eccentric Earl of Houndswood, she embarks on a mission to find a killer and give those poor souls peace. But scheming her way through society proves nearly as difficult as solving a murder, and Sophie finds herself at the whims of both a criminal and her heart.
The shadowy alleys of London meet the glamour of the ballroom in this tale perfect for fans of Stalking Jack the Ripper and Bridgerton.
Morgan Fischer loves to read and write sweet, magical romances. She was the girl who grew up leaving the library with the maximum number of books you could check out, and has never stopped doing the exact same thing. The most likely place you can find her is curled up on the couch with a book, blanket, and glass of wine. Unfortunately, that too often gets derailed by her college classes at the University of Florida. But she manages to make it work.
Besides reading and writing, she loves dancing, painting, going on long walks, and listening to music. One of her constant goals is to combine as many of those interests as possible, causing a chaos of creativity 24/7.
The Twelve O’Clock Bookshop is her first novel, but she hopes to publish more very soon. Follow her on instagram, @morganlee_reads, to stay up to date with any new release information!
After a long streak of romantasy reads, A Guide to Seeing Ghosts by Morgan Fischer was exactly what I needed—a refreshing, cozy change of pace that completely pulled me in. ✨👻📖 This story gave me all the nostalgic vibes of staying up way too late devouring Nancy Drew mysteries as a kid. The blend of murder mystery and ghostly elements was so well done—intriguing, atmospheric, and just the right amount of eerie without losing that cozy feel. Our FMC, Sophie, has been able to see ghosts since childhood, which unfortunately makes her an outsider in Victorian England. But honestly? I adored her. She’s quietly bold, fiercely independent, and unapologetically herself—even when society expects otherwise. I’m convinced we would’ve been best friends. 💫 Enter Hugo, our MMC—an inspector dedicated to solving mysteries. His logical, grounded nature perfectly contrasts Sophie’s supernatural world, and their dynamic was everything. The slow-burn friendship-to-romance? Immaculate. The banter? Top tier. I loved watching their relationship unfold so naturally. 🖤 And the mystery itself—WOW. I genuinely didn’t guess the culprit or the motive, which made the payoff at the end so satisfying. It kept me hooked the entire time. 🔍 If you’re in the mood for a cozy, ghost-filled whodunnit with a touch of romance, definitely add this to your TBR. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (4.5 stars)
This was a murder mystery with ghosts and a tiny bit of romance set in Victorian England. Sophie has seen ghosts all her life, which has led to her being somewhat of an outcast and definitely a loner in society. She constantly chafes against society’s rules but is smart and observant. Usually the ghosts she saw were benign and just there. However, when she starts to see future victims graphically murdered, she goes to Hugo for help. Hugo has a sad past and is a lord but is working as an investigator. (I am actually hoping we get another book where Hugo’s past is resolved.) While at first Hugo was standoffish (even slightly rude to her,) eventually he softens and works with her to solve the crimes. They still clashed a lot, so we got some fun banter. However as they work together, they get to know each other better and I enjoyed seeing their relationship get deeper and more meaningful. It isn’t a super fast paced book as there is a lot of downtime in the book between balls and crime scenes since thanks to society rules, Sophie is home a lot and cannot just go out. The identity of the murderer was not super obvious so that was nice. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and the mystery.
A Guide to Seeing Ghosts by Morgan Fischer is a thrilling murder mystery with spooky friends involved.
What would you do if from a very young age you could see things that others couldn't. Would someone believe you if you saw ghosts? Well, Sophia has always been deemed crazy because of this. But when the visions become something even spookier she had to go and find someone to help decipher them. There was banter, and there was a mystery lurking behind every corner.
Who was the murd3r3er? It was something that you really couldn't guess. I loved the interactions between the MMC and FMC, there was both a level of honesty they had to give each other in order to find out what was going on in the case. The author made me feel things throughout, I loved the candid conversations they had with each other.
If you want a murder mystery set in Regency with a touch of ghosts, this is the one for you.
First of all, thank you Morgan Fischer for the wonderful opoortunity to be an ARC reader! :)
From beginning to end, I was HOOKED! Who doesn't love a Victorian murder mystery intertwined with a dash of romance and some action?
Sophia and Hugo are written as believable, real-world society characters, which isn't always an easy feat to accomplish. I felt their dynamic was super natural (no pun intended haha!) and came across very well. I especially enjoyed the view into Sophia's brain as she struggled with accepting her ghostly premonitions, and her self vs. society mindset that is very common in those who have lost friendships/relationships/etc (you spend a lot of time wondering if you were just normal...maybe people would like you).
Overall, I enjoyed this historical supernatural mystery and can't wait to read what Morgan cooks up next! :)
Thank you to the author, Morgan for an ARC of this book!
This was a very fun, whodunit mystery set in the Victorian era. This was extra fun because I had also coincidentally just finished season 4 of Bridgerton.
Miss Sophia Shaw lives in a time when seeing ghosts means you're crazy. Nevertheless, she sees them and saw someone get killed before it actually happened. Enter the Earl of Houndswood, with whom she goes on an adventure to find out who has been killing the people whose ghosts haunt her.
It was very fun to be able to see the romance unfold in this book. It was very much a slow burn and was really fun to witness. Sophia and Hugo had really fun banter, and I loved all of their interactions together. Such a fun read!
Atmospheric. I felt transported back to Victorian London, set against a backdrop of fog, dangerous alleyways, social niceties, and intrigue, with a murderer on the loose.
A woman who sees ghosts, recently including the victims of said murderer. A man who despises the gentry he belongs to, who outranks most and yet chooses self-isolation and investigation.
An unlikely team, fueled by the need to find a murderer. I appreciated the banter, the journey from disdain to love, and the fact that I didn’t guess the killer.
Huge thanks to Morgan Fischer for sending me an ARC of this hauntingly beautiful novel! A Guide to Seeing Ghosts delivered everything I adore in a story: a richly atmospheric Victorian gothic setting, a compelling and resilient female lead, an intriguing mystery, and just the right touch of romance. From the very first pages, I felt completely transported to 1886 London, wandering fog laced streets alongside Sophia as she navigates a world that both fears and needs her gift. I was genuinely reluctant to leave this world when I turned the final page. What a truly phenomenal read!
I loved this book so much! It had a perfect mix of suspense and romance. This historical fiction/fantasy was written so well, and I was giggling and kicking my feet over Hugo and Sophie’s developing relationship the entire time. The ending was so satisfying and I already want to re-read it to see if I missed anything!
This book was fantastic!! Once I started it, I couldn't put it down and the next thing I knew its 2:30am and I'm sobbing like a baby! I will be purchasing the paperback when it releases for sure! 10/10 ❤️

Review: I absolutely loved this book! The mystery, the intrigue and the romance! I am obsessed with it ! I was fully entertained so much so that as I was reaching the ending of the book I was reading less of it because I wasn’t ready to be done with this book! I loved Sophia and Hugo’s chemistry and banter! They were perfect as characters I couldn’t get enough of them! I loved watching as they slowly fell in love! Well done and I couldn’t have asked for a better love story! I was surprised with how the mystery unraveled itself and the paranormal aspect was so well done!
Thank you Morgan Fischer for giving me the opportunity to read this wonderful book!
First of all, thank you so much to the author for sending an arc of this book!! What an amazing premise for a story and a unique historical romance!!
Sophia and the Earl were both fun, eccentric characters!! I really enjoyed the mystery of this case and honestly did not know who the murder was. With the two of them working together to solve the case and to help Sophia’s ability to see ghosts, this was an entertaining read!!
This also captured grief and sadness so well ugh! I loved that both the main characters had depth and stories outside of their murder mystery.
There were a few things I wished had been developed on more, like Sophia’s visions. The romance was, in my opinion, really sudden. The one thing that really took me out of the story was the dialogue/writing… at times it was very ‘modern’ and didn’t belong in a historical romance.
If you’re looking for a mystery, a historical romance, and a unique read - this is it!! I can’t wait to see what Morgan puts out next!!
