Two outcasts. One is despised and abused because of the past, the other is rejected as a mutant freak. One is a wolf, the daughter of the deposed tyrant of the Kaffracuss Kingdom, and the other is Bhorg’s heir. Both have been cast out by their people as pariahs, but when the disappearance of Valon leads Corto and Renard into the midst of a bloody war, only the outcasts can save them—if they care.
The summer after the Nhorn War ends, Bhorg’s heir, the future Rhob, is born. But the shocking, unexpected nature of the offspring, coupled with the sudden news that Valon has vanished near the kingdom of the Kaffracans, lead Corto and Renard into the hostile world of the wolf guild and a bloody war that makes the Nhorn War seem like a mere kids’ scrum. Victory seems hopeless without the help of both Bhorg’s heir and the wolf tyrant’s daughter—but can the two exiles find the courage to risk their own lives for the sake of the others? Will they help Corto and Renard? Will they save their kingdoms? Or will they lose everything? Find out in this fifth book of The Animal Guild Series.
Jennifer Sowle calls northern California home, sharing her lair over the years with as many as eight dogs and cats—when they let her, that is! She started writing her fantasy adventure series The Animal Guild at age thirteen, so the characters have borne impatiently with her through years of revisions and plot twists.
In the series, furry characters, big bugs and even human teenagers get into the most unbelievable trouble. She has written ten books in the series, plus several stories, with more works planned.
The Animal Guild Series is still going strong in this fifth offering!
Have you ever felt like an outcast? I bet the answer is 'Yes,' because anyone who's gone through childhood (or is currently going through childhood!) is sure to have felt uncomfortably different at one point or another.
Well, Corto and Renard have been caught up in the affairs of two new friends who are going through some very troubling times. These two young females, a Marrhob and a wolf, are outcasts from their own societies, and their tangled destinies lead them, and some of our favorite Guilders, on a long trip and a great adventure. This is a tale of prejudice and redemption, love and loss, deception and betrayal, sacrifice and sorrow, and through it all steadfast friendships and limitless loyalties.
I highly recommend this satisfying and engaging continuation of the Animal Guild series.
This is my favorite Animal Guild book so far. The pacing is absolutely light-speed and the plot is intense. A real page-turner! The characters here are particularly well-drawn, with the two protagonists, especially, given great depth and sensitive treatment. This one will move you, guaranteed.
I enjoyed learning more about Bhorg's daughter Bhresh, and also about the Kaffracus War. This was alluded to so much in the previous books, it was nice to finally meet some of the people involved (other than Renard and Co.) A nice follow up to the previous Animal Guild books.
