“Life imitates art far more than art imitates Life.” ― Oscar Wilde

Author Nicola Royse dreamed of Scottish Highlanders as a teen then wrote about them as an adult. Always looking but never finding her own White Knight, she still held out hope that he would one day ride up on his trusty steed. He rode up all right, on a silver Harley with heat in his eyes and a detective's badge on his hip while she and her friends plotted her first contemporary romantic suspense. Of course, life couldn't' imitate art without a killer on the loose, one that had Nicola and her friends in his sights.

Detective Dallas Vaughn dedicated his life to catching killers. Then one day he bumped into the girl-next-door, and all that changed. Now he's her White Knight fighting against a Dark Prince—one who would love to see her dead.

“Of all the coffee joints , in all the towns, in all the world, he walks into mine…,”

My name is Nicola Grace Royse— though I write under the pen name Grace Martin— and I’m a romance novelist slash romance junkie slash eternal believer that love conquers all.

So caught up in the world she creates, where men are men, Men who are fearless, handsome, great between the sheets, love their women with all their hearts, and take care of them or die trying— Scottish Highlanders. and everything has a happy ending, Nicola turned herself in the lonely spinster cat lady with no interaction with reality besides her twin brothers Finn and Bo, one she can do without. When a news story catches her eye, and not to mention the Drop Dead Delicious Detective, the writer in her starts putting together a story worth writing, and with the help of her friends, she may have finally found the balance between her work and her life.
“I, Nicola Grace Royse, hereby pinky swear that I won’t work on this book without the participation of Angela, Kristina, Kasey, or Janeane. I furthermore acknowledge that if I break this oath, I will set into motion events that will mean the destruction of this sisterhood.”

Nicola wasn't sure what to do when her Triple D hero steps out of her books right into her, but she knows it wouldn't have included coffee and a change of clothes. Dallas has his hands full with “The Shallow Grave Killer,” and he doesn't need a distraction like Nicola, but it seems everywhere he goes she seems to be there, being a cute little menace to his mind, body and wardrobe.
“The next time you feel the need to get drunk with thoughts of getting laid, you call me, and no one else, understand?

Nicola tries to distract herself with her new book and even though she promised to not work on the book without her girls, she has to keep busy or else she'd be forced to do something stupid like jump her triple D and beg him to take her. Nicola and her friends seem to think that it's all harmless research but the dating sites they use to come up with their villain hits a little to close to him with the real bad guy. The Dark Prince is unamused with women who tease and play games, he has his own game to play and they will soon learn what it means to disregard the commands of a Master.
There was no escape from Dark Prince when he hunted you, only pain, only death.

Dallas is the man that Nicola, the all American girl, has ever dreamed about. And even though he is knee deep in finding who this sick killer is, he finds time for Nicola. Dallas has no problem going toe-to-toe with her brothers, charming her friends but his main focus is the pretty girl who gave him a bigger purpose than his work.
“You’re mine now. I’m the only one who touches this,” he rolled my clit to make his point, “or touches this ,” he pinched and then rolled my nipple, making me groan, “Or tastes those sweet lips,” he finished and turned his head to capture my lips.

She is his to protect and when his investigation finds that her and her friends are potential targets for the killer, he stops at nothing to catch his killer. This case is becoming too personal for Dallas and Nola, and while the both want nothing more than to catch this killer who wants nothing more than their fear ...
“Give it to me and I promise I’ll guard it with my fuckin’ soul. I swear, I’ll fight the demons back and keep you safe.”

Sick and twisted, the Dark Prince is and he won't stop until he gets his fill ...

Property Of had a little bit of everything; humor, suspense, thrills, loss and a romance that will satisfy the romantic at heart, not to mention a sexy alpha man who takes what he wants and leaves us wanting more. I have come to terms that CP Smith can do no wrong, everything I have read, I have enjoyed tremendously while getting the butterflies in my tummy feels and kept on the edge of my seat with the mystery of the story. I can't say too much, because you just have to dive in and live in the moment with them, but there are so many memorable moments to enjoy. One of my favorite parts of the book is when Nicola's brothers challenge Dallas in the arcades, while it was all fun and entertaining it was his response that just made me fall in love with him. I highly recommend this to all my romantic at heart friends, especially if you are in the mood for an alpha man and a mystery thrill. Plus it's a standalone read with a epilogue to make you giddy!

This was my first CP Smith novel and it won't be the last but it wasn't quite the hit I was expecting. I did love the characters and the humour but I think I failed to get the connection with the story and the people in the way I was hoping.

The narrative is very humorous told with witty asides to the reader which almost worked for me but just slightly missed. I've seen a lot of reviews comparing this authors style to Kristen Ashley and, while I definitely see the similarities, I was struck strongly just how similar this book is to one I read a few years ago.

Mr. Perfect by Linda Howard

Everything about Property Of reminded me strongly of that one which I would consider a 5 star read and can highly recommend but somehow I never seemed to fully connect with this one. I really did appreciate everything that the author was trying to do and I've heard really good things about her other books so I will try her again.

The book in a sentence: Who are you the property of ? A killer that claims you or the hero who saves you ?

My Thoughts on the plot: Let me just dive in straight and say...If I hadn't double checked the fact that this book was by C.P. Smith I would have DEFINATLY thought this was one of Kristen Ashley's book, just an over-edited version of a series.

Seriously the similarities between this book & KA's Colorado mountain series was too hard to ignore.

Allow me to point out a few..

A)An Over-baring alpha male, that decides that your his 'woman' before the first day ends.

B)Another Over-baring Alpha male that wants the heroine too.

C)A sweet feisty heroine that everyone loves..

D)A nosey but solicitous sisterhood that meet every week for coffee or drinks to talk about hot men in general.

F)A crazy ex wife that wants the hero back.

G) A crazy serial Killer determined to stalk all woman who just Happened to look like the heroine...

WRONG ! I didn't have to look closely at all to see the obvious...Really.

And with that said,Let me also add in that the plot was good..I did like the characters, the story, the suspense & defiantly the ending..The only reason I didn't give it a five was because it just wasn't a KA book & the fact that that the epilogue ended rather abruptly,as if the final page was missing.

Is this book a standalone or a series novel ?
Property of is a stand alone.

Would I recommend the read ?
Yes ! Defiantly ! Especially if you've read all of KA fan.

Will I be reading more from the author ?
Hummm..If she writes another Suspense-Romance then probably.

Overall Opinion: I found this book on one of GR lists that mentions books that are similar to Kristen Ashley's writing style. I'm a fan of these lists on GR, as they help when I'm looking for something that might not have been on my radar. This was, however, a little disappointing. I think there were only a few things that I could say a similar to KA's works: the H is alpha bossy, there were details that got too wordy and I skimmed, and the h had a close-knit family and friend group. Other than that, I didn't feel it. I didn't feel the connection between the characters. I understood their attraction and how they ended up in bed together, but other than that? Nope. Didn't feel anything. I didn't even really feel like they had all that much chemistry in said bed tbh (see below "heat level"). I often struggle with suspenseful romances because I don't feel like the romance and suspense are well balanced, and I think that happened here. But, hey! If you like these books with a stronger emphasis on the suspense and some sexy times thrown in?! This might work great for you.

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Nicola and Dallas's story. Nicola is a historical romance author and realizes that she has been a bad friend to her group of girls lately. After meeting one day, they all decide to work together to write Nicola's first contemporary romance novel based on a killer that uses dating websites to choose his prey. After some unfortunate run ins with the mysterious detective that had her mind assigning him as her new book boyfriend, Dallas makes his intentions known that he is pursuing Nicola. Once there are some murders that hit a little too close to home and too close to their fictional story, Dallas takes it upon himself to protect Nicola. There are some suspenseful moments, some sexy times, and a few funny moments...and they get a HFN ending.

POV: This alternated between Nicola's POV and 3rd person narrative focusing mainly on Dallas and the killer.

Overall Pace of Story: Alright. It felt slow at some points and then the last 10ish% felt quick. I did skim some in those slower parts, because I felt like the information was not all that relevant to the story -- and since I still followed the general storyline fine, I think I was obviously okay in missing that information.

Instalove: Kind of. Things move quickly for the couple, and I didn't fully understand the progression into stronger feelings tbh.

H rating: 3.5 stars. Dallas. I liked his protective nature, but I think he could've communicated a little better with the h.

h rating: 3 stars. Nicola. She was okay. I liked her quirkiness with her being a historical romance author, but she bugged me in how she assumed a lot and had a lot of misunderstandings because of it.

Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed

Push/Pull: Yes

Heat level: Low. I didn't feel it that much. I felt like the characters were put through the montions in hopes of us assuming a connection because of it, but I didn't get that. I wouldn't say that the scenes are to the point that they take away from the storyline, but I felt like they were sometimes in place of the meaningful interactions needed in order to build that connection.

Descriptive sex: Yes

OW/OM drama: Yes

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Separation: Not really.

Possible Triggers: Yes

Closure: This had a cute epilogue, but I think it needed more closure. I would've liked a farther glimpse into the couple's future. I would personally call this a HFN ending, but I'm sure others would be fine calling it a HEA

Safety: This one should be Safe for most safety gang readers.

Holy Shamoly, that was good....

I love ending books on a high and Property Of, left me with a huge smile on my face. This book had all the thing I love in a romance novel. I laughed myself silly with all the quirky lines that came from the heroine Nicola. I was intrigued with the mystery surrounding the serial killer on the loose. Our hero Dallas turned me on with all of his tough, gruff and possessive talk. The friendship between Nicola and her friends was true, strong and believable. One of my favourite connections portrayed was the one with Nicola and her brothers. They are triplets and Finn and Bo like to torment Nicola at every opportunity, but also would protect her with their lives.

Nicola and Dallas meet for the first time when they bump into each other and he wears the coffee he was holding. They have an instant attraction to each other and meet again under similar circumstances. Nicola is an author of historical romances and decides to take a break from it and write a romantic suspense instead. She tells her friends about it and they decide to help her do the research. Nicola's research takes her to the police station where she meets the guy who keeps wearing his coffee because of her. It doesn't take Dallas long to decide that fate has brought them together, so he's going to keep her.

There was plenty of drama with our heroine making some silly decisions, the Heroes ex-wife deciding she wants back in (short lived drama that Dallas sorts out quick and easy) and safety issues that always seem to get bungled when the killer is about. I'm not a huge fan of drama for the sake of drama, but this one balanced out OK for me.

Overall I really enjoyed this story. I loved the talk about Highlanders, maidens and warlords. Dallas was my favourite type of hero with his "mine" mentality and possessive nature. Nicola was a character that made me laugh and her thought processes for her books were interesting and funny. Dallas and Nicola as a couple worked well for me, I never doubted their connection and knew in the end, it would all work out.

After reading this, one of my first thoughts was...Ms Smith when are you writing a Highlander romance for us? Another great story by CP Smith, can't wait for more.

4.5 Alpha Stars!!

Nicola Grace Royce is an Historical Romance writer who is inspired to write a contemporary romantic/suspense novel after seeing a very handsome police Detective investigating a homicide on the evening news.

When she literally runs into the man who inspired her hero, it's hilarious. Det. Dallas Vaughn is all (ALPHA) male and so, so sexy!! He's a workaholic who's completely dedicated to his job, but that's about to change when he finds himself face to face with Nicola. After several chance encounters, he has a need to protect her along with the overwhelming need stake his claim. Nicola doesn't trust easily and has a hard time believing that this beautiful man is really as interested in her as he claims to be. Bottom line...she is afraid of turning over her heart and having it shattered.

"Give it to me and I promise I'll guard it with my fuckin' soul. I swear, I'll fight the demons back and keep you safe."

“What I want,” he told me firmly as he swept his thumbs across my cheek, “is to own that part of you that you’ve never given away, that part that can only be mine.”

Dallas quickly becomes the kind of hero that Nicola has always dreamed about but instead of a steed he rides a Harley, wears jeans (perfectly) instead of a Kilt, and carries a gun & badge rather than a sword. Dallas has a killer to catch, especially now as it seems the "Shallow Grave Killer" has set his sights on Nicola and her group of BFF's. We are introduced to FBI Agent Parker in this book, I really loved his character and hope we get a book for him!

Great secondary characters, especially her overbearing and over protective twin brothers Bo & Finn (she and her brothers are actually triplets).

“Bo!” Finn shouted from behind me, interrupting my private talk with Simi and Snape, “Nicola’s talking to her cats again.”

“What’s she saying this time?” Bo hollered back.

"Apparently, she thinks she’s gonna get drunk and then get laid.”

“Excellent, I could use a good work out. I haven’t beaten the shit out of a guy in years,” he answered.

As with all her other books, we get the all important epilogue and I have to say she writes a great epilogues!!

I have come to really, really like C.P. Smith she delivers an entertaining read with a fantastic mix of steamy sex, humor, and suspense. This author has become an auto buy for me, much like KA her hero's.....which everyone knows I love, are very ALPHA, SEXY, romantic, and fun. I highly recommend all her books if you are addicted to Alphas as I am!!!

When Nicola Royce is forced to interact with actual humans rather than her cats after finishing her latest book, her friends are bound to keep her from slinking back to her writing cave. But for Nicola her brain just can’t turn off the stories, so when a new idea pops into her head, her friends offer to help her ‘research’ her idea for a romantic suspense novel. But fiction is turning quickly into non-fiction as Nicola finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation and danger at every turn.

Dallas Vaughn lived for his job. It was what gave him satisfaction. Taking down those guilty, even if the lines had to be blurred to make sure the guilty paid. Nothing else mattered, he had no time for anything other than his first love... the job. But that is about to change with he finds himself face to face with Nicola. Suddenly a need to protect her and claim her takes over and Dallas quickly becomes the kind of hero that Nicola has always fantasized about... but he still has to catch the killer and protect the girl.

Alpha Male – check
Sassy heroine – check
Suspense – check

When you start a CP Smith novel there are some basic things you know you’re going to get. Sassy (a little aloof) heroines that need a man with a strong hand to really love them and bring out the passion that has always remain dormant within them. Heroes that are brooding, all alpha male and hotter than sin; ones that see what they want and take it. The kind that down run or back down from that strange feeling in their chest, but ones that embrace it and know, deep down that that is the feeling of falling in love. Warning, there is insta-love in her novels, deal with. Embrace it, because after all, even when we say we don’t want it... we secretly love it.

But we also always get a good dose of suspense. Property Of is no different. A few clues as to who might be behind the murders but never enough to figure it out fully until the she’s ready to show you all her cards. And as always a few characters that have you wanting to another story just for them, yeah.... there were at least three males in this particular story that would make excellent heroes with their own story.

There were a few times when I got distracted from the story though. Minor things that I think fall to more of a personal reaction than something with the writing. I am not a huge fan of the fast forward, then retelling of a scene, especially if the scene is recapped; but really was something that I wanted more detail out of. I am also not a fan of historical type romances so being that Nicola was in fact a writer of HR, she slipped in and out of that particular voice and it was a little distracting for me. But again, that is my own personal reaction and it did work well with the story.

I loved these two together and really wanted more scenes of just the two of them. The minute they’d interact I found myself with a huge grin on my face. I lived for these moments and felt that they were a little scarce throughout the story at times. There was so much going on with the murders the co-characters that I found myself just wanting to have these two characters lock themselves away from it all so I could have more of just them.

I’ve read all of the books this author has released to date and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. She delivers fantastic characters and story lines that hold your attention. If you like your men, manly – and all alpha male, you need to read this author. I am crossing my fingers that there might be a spin off or two for this series... maybe one featuring a certain FBI Agent or a set of twins....

I ended up liking many things in this story... and not liking others.

Heroine - Nicola was a historical romance author who seemed to be more comfortable with fiction than reality. In a current situation, she would find ways to fictionalize it for the reader and I skimmed most of it because I'm still not sure what was supposed to be gained by this. She's decided that she wants to do a contemporary romance and then when she realizes a serial killer is targeting women in her area, she figures she should find a way to incorporate him in her book. The cop she meets, Dallas, who ends up being the hero of this story, ends up in her book. The FBI agent hunting killers... in the book. And let's not forget the crazy scenario of her and her friends creating a fake profile on POF and a BDSM website to taunt a man. With a serial killer on the loose! Clearly, Nicola wasn't the brightest crayon in the box.

I enjoyed most of how this story was written, except for the repetitive bits and Nicola's nonsense. I admired the way the author described and illustrated Nicola's friendships and her relationship with her family. I enjoyed most of what Dallas had to offer, except when he had to put up with Nicola's nonsene. I even liked the suspenseful element because of how entertaining it was. I may not have loved this particular story as much as I thought I would, but I have loved other books by this author and I'll definitely be giving her another try.

How accurate.

Gah. This book is such a downer. I have high hopes when I saw this one on GR because of the high ratings and positive reviews. I'm not judging other people's review or what. Some people loves vegetables. I find them offensive. So I'm using the "it's not you babe, it's me" cliche.

Reasons why this relationship didn't work out.

The hero

You know, I just can't stand the fact that I find this book a "trying, not hard but in a half-assed way" to become a KA book.

Yes. Yes. BIG WORDS.

Let's take Dallas for example. Other than Edward Cullen, I have never hated a hero before.

I mean, Dallas is a cop. Cullen is a vampire, which I'm sure is not a profession.

Dallas is one hundred percent human. Cullen is a vampire. A sparkling one.

Dallas is an alpha male and loves to order the heroine around.
Cullen...Well, Cullen just broods, stalks and sparkle.

No contest. So why do I hate Dallas?

It's because, in a way he reminds me of KA heroes like Chase, Eddie and Hank.In a very very bad way.

All are hot cops and all are alpha.

BUT.

If Chase, Eddie and Hank are original Louie Vuitton's, then Dallas is a fake imitation made to satisfy 7-year old girls who love to play fashion.

description

Good grief. I understand that there are a lot of alpha heroes in the world of Con-Rom, but from the very moment that Dallas said "Babe" and "You better fucking believe it" ,it screams KA to me. Trolls, also I understand that a lot of heroes do that, but as I've said, it's my own gut feeling.

I also find his autocratic behavior half-assed. Like, there was a scene where I was like "Oh my gosh. Here goes the alphaness....More!More!Mo-Wait. What? Why are they making up? Where's the fight?Where's the angst?"

There are a lot of scenes where the build up was so good I was practically salivating. But that's all I get. A build up.

Take it this way.

You guys were having sex with your partner and you are already seeing the Big O in the horizon. It was good. It was fucking fantastic. Then all of a sudden, the SEX IS OVER. No big O for you because you're partner is already done doing the nasty.

Wouldn't you want to smack his head into the nearest wall?

That's what it feels like.
description

The heroine.

I actually don't know how should I react. There's a reason why I love unassuming heroine. The naive, quite, not so pretty type?I like reading about them. Every time I read a book that has this type of heroine, I'm pooping rainbows. I want these type of girls because it gives me hope that not all dashing gorgeous girls can find true love.Even nerdy quite girls can have those two. Petty, I know. But that's me.

So when I saw that Nicola qualifies on that group of heroines, I was excited.

She's naive in a way.
She's not the prettiest of the group, but she's quite attractive in a girl-next door way.
She's also nerdy.
I was ready to jump over the moon.

BUT THEN, I FOUND OUT SHE'S AN IDIOT.

For a best-selling romance author, she sure lacks common sense.
She want's Dallas so much but every time she encounters some small things that would rock her relationship with Dallas, she already assumed the worst. That's the problem with these type of characters. They tend to over react on negative things.

And then, when one of her friends were murdered, she decided to catch the killer all by herself. Now some would say "It's either the bravest thing you've ever done or the stupidest."

I call it stupid.

Is she a cop or mercenary or a federal agent that she thinks she can catch the psycho that event he Feds can't find? No. She's an author. A historical romance author. Which is fine. But REALLY!

description

The result of this stupidity? She endangers her life and she makes all those people around her worried

Lady, just leave the catching of the killer to those who have been trained to do the job!

Excuse me, but I really am allergic to idiots.

description

The Suspense

They say this is a romantic suspense.

Bullshit. Suspense is when you're heart beats fast. Suspense is when you are gnawing your fingernails because you're excited and scared as to what will happen next.

I did not feel or do anything like that.

But anyway, if you want to read the book, feel free to ignore my review. Remember, I'm claiming the "it's not you babe, it's me" cliche. Maybe it's just me after all.

I'm going to try to make this short because I really wanted to love this book and I didn't and quite frankly I'm grumpy about it.

description

I didn't like the unnecessary pop culture references. Most of which I had to look up to get what she was talking about. Not many of them but enough to pull me out of the book. Either make such glaringly obvious references(i.e. Harry Potter) or none at all(preferable). Then we had the "Picture it" mid chapter. See our MC Nicola is an author and everything she comes across can inspire her to create a plot or add a fictional character but mostly she pictures herself in her plots and daily life as the fair haired maiden. So as we are reading her POV she says to the reader "Picture it" and then describes the scene like you're reading a Highlander book. The first time I didn't even know if it was happening or if it was all in her head. The second time was a bit cute, the third was just annoying.

Picture it . . .
Nicola, the fair-haired maiden, was stretching out her Gluteus Maximus when the dark and dangerous hero passed by the window.

description

The other thing that annoyed me is a huge spoiler so I wont spell it out but I just wanna scream "Anyone have any common sense? The characters in this book need some!".

It started very well but after the 60% point it just didn't work for me anymore.
Saying that, all the things that annoyed me might not annoy anyone else so don't let this review stop you from reading it. It's by no means a bad book. It just didn't work for me.

Surprisingly enough, I really enjoyed this. Surprising because I've only read one other book from this author, A Reason to Breathe, and let's just say it wasn't really my cuppa. I'm so glad I gave her another chance because Property Of proved to be a much better story in my opinion, with both the romance and suspense elements well written. A little on the silly side but still well written.

Does this author's writing still remind me of a certain author with the initials KA? Yes, a little bit to be honest. CP Smith's unique voice was more evident here so the similarities didn't bother me as much.

That last line? Just...no. I don't think that counts as an epilogue. Just sayin'.

★Review★

Ok, first off, let me explain my 3 guilty stars. I have read this author before, and had problems with her, and been determined to not read her again. Yet here I am, AGAIN! Hence it is more a 2 stars but I do know I should probably give up on this author so feel mean 2 starring in all honesty.

I always really love the idea of the story, but then the execution leaves a lot to be desired, with some utter ridiculousness. (ie from previous books, clumsy heroines jumping from a moving train, or in another book running around woods at night with glow in the dark vibrators)

Here we had a flipping lesson in what catfishing was, (as you know the book is just sooooooooo with the times) which read a bit like a Wikipedia entry at one point.

The heroine has not got a man as "men just are not raised to be men these days" which was repeated eleventy billion times. Men these days are "sensitive, gentle, in touch with their feelings.." The horror! Oh and she was of the opinion that "it's in our genetic makeup to rely on men"

Oh and her and her "writers brain" got annoying very quick. Oh, and her unique writers block she had, which was not in actual fact writers block AT ALL. It was actually just an excuse for her to be a shitty friend and ignore her friends for months as her "unique writers block" meant she forgot the world around her.

And the whole "Picture this..." business quite frankly was doing my nut in by the second time we had it.

Look, I can see where the author is trying to go with these characters, they are meant to be funny ditzy quirky heroine, and brooding alpha men.

However the OTT insta lust, ridiculous situations meaning to add comedic value (ie spilling food on the poor hero the first few times you see him) TSTL heroine just lead to a book I find myself rolling my eyes at more than actually enjoying.

But I really do not know why I keep trying, maybe as so many other love her, and they do, so i think I must be missing something. But really, she has probably had enough of my money by now, and I need to stay away.

And I am going to link to a GR friends review

~ Becs ~'s Reviews and just reiterate what she says. If you want to read a book that is very similar but so much better done, than read Mr. Perfect by Linda Howard . I read this a few years back and love it so much.

My review:

Nicola was a cute and spunky historical romance author who wanted to venture into new waters with her writing. When she sees a sexy detective on TV while he is investigating a new serial killer, she is intrigued and knows not only does she want to do something more in that genre, but also that sexy detective HAS to be one of her characters. That is .... until she meets him and wants him as more than one of her heroes in her stories.

Their chance encounters were hilarious. I loved how Dallas was a no bullshit kind of guy. He saw Nicola and right away knew he wanted to pursue her. At first, he was waiting it out - trying to maybe pursue her when he knew he had more time to dedicate to her and their budding relationship, but after SEVERAL chance encounters and passing the big brother tests her twin brothers threw at him, he knew his waiting for over and he was taking what was his. I love a hero like that. No second guessing, doubts or pushing away.

This story also took a step into being suspenseful with the murders and all. I enjoyed seeing the budding romance of Finn and Kasey - as well as her two sons. That romance has me nervous to read only because Finn seemed like kind of a manwhore before that, but I could have just got the wrong idea. There is nothing wrong with a reformed manwhore. Supposedly Kasey always had a crush on him. She did marry though and had two children so she moved on. Now, if after he sees her again once she moves back to town after her divorce, if he continued with that playboy lifestyle, I will not be a happy camper and I'll have to skip ....

My rating of 3 stars is an average. The first 63% of the book was boring, had too many characters being introduced and very little time with the two MCs together in any scenes. By this point, I think she had spilled something on him 3 times and they had kissed twice. That amounts to about the entirety of their scenes together. All of this contributed to me not getting why he liked her and I just did not feel their connection. Therefore, I struggled to connect and care about the story and characters.

The voice of the book did not work for me. I do not like a MC talking at me. I prefer to see their world. Not be a part of it. Nicola's inner Scottish Highlander monologues were also not a favorite of mine. I would have totally skipped them except she was actualy retelling something that we missed. The first 2 sections were a pretty descent murder mystery. The last section things heated up fast and furious. Dallas and Nicola got slightly more scenes together, but still not enough. His ex wife (not heard from in 2 years) pops in to cause a little trouble. Minor and over quickly. But we cannot seem to get through a book without an ex popping up!

Dallas was great - I think. In my mind he is. But we had very little time with him to really show his alpha badass self. He was always off to work or, in the last 35%, having sex or getting ready to. The sex scenes were pretty tame and skimmed over. Nicola waffles from a strong heroine to TSTL to an ok heroine. In the end she was ok. Not terrible. Made some poor choices, but none that were meaningful, so she does not deserve the title of TSTL.

The murder mystery part of the story was absolutely the main storyline. Romance was not. I liked the ending, thought it was the strongest part of the book. Appreciated that the author did not drag out the required bad guy gets the girl and tortures her scene. Epilogue was ok - could have been better.

I like this author. Have really liked 2 of her books. But the last two from this series I have not thought highly of. But I certainly like her enough to jump right into the next one!

This is Safety Gang safe. Nothing to spoiler.

I loved the concept of this book. I loved that Nicola was an author. I loved her process and how her friends got caught up in the research for her first contemporary book.

Dallas was a great alpha. I loved the way that Dallas and Nicola met. I died laughing. And every "meet" after that was pure gold. I actually wish there had been more time they spent either together or dancing around each other before they were drawn into the murder mystery.

With each book, I think the author gets better and better at the insta-love theme. The whole book takes place over a couple of weeks, but it feels like months (in a good way). So much happens that you forget that Dallas and Nicola just met.

My one complaint (and this was a personal thing) was how during certain events in the book, Nicola would start telling it in a historical romance narrative and while it was ok, and worked in the scene in the bar, every other time, I would have preferred to read the actual events. Like I said, it was a personal opinion.

Overall, I've really come to enjoy this author's work and I look forward to her next book.

I really enjoyed the book until the last two lines:
And they all drank coffee and lived happily ever after. The End.

What the what? With the way the epilogue ended, which I loved that section- why use those throw away lines? For me, it made me feel like I didn't get my full closure and that the author didn't care about the story in the end.

Anyway, the book was pretty good - minus the spelling errors and using the bad guy's name once in place of Dallas's name.

I feel the need to point out that this book felt heavily influenced by Kristen Ashley's titles: Rock Chicks, For You & Sweet Dreams. It probably wasn't, but still, I felt like I was reading a story by her. I will admit, Dallas was a great hero, who unlike KA's males, speaks in full sentences that make better sense. -just my opinion! I still love KA's older stuff.

It was fun to read a story about a romance author and a detective. I love how Dallas was with Nicola. I also appreciated that their drama didn't always last long, and that Nicola wasn't a complete idiot- though she did make a few rash decisions instead of talking it out first.

I really liked the whole secondary cast of cops, friends and family. I also liked the ending for Kasey- though, I wouldn't mind a story all of her own - with her leading man.

over all- i liked:
1. The story line
2. The flow of the story and all the story has to offer so I didn't get bored.
3. Dallas!!
4. KA feel to the story
5. Had some good dialogue at times with the H/h and h/friends.
6. Humor
7. Epilogue
8. Pulled some water out of my eyes a few times.
9. Drama wasn't long lasting
10. Once a couple always a couple.

Picked this one up on a whim. I'll be honest and tell you it was pretty much just because of cover lust lol. It turned out to be a really good read, I enjoyed it a lot. It has a really interesting plot that keeps you on your toes and great characters. Dallas was hot as hell and Nicola was super funny. Some of the stuff she said and thought just cracked me up. Definitely recommend this one!

Holy smokes. What a book. I loved it. 10 triple D stars. This is my second book by this author and I have seen a lot of mixed reviews about the book. I'm on the higher end of the spectrum here.

Nicola Grace Royse is a romance novelist and writes historical romance. She is a bit of a hermit. Until she wants to change direction and go into romantic suspense.

She is looking for her knight in shining armor or her highlander in a kilt.

On TV she sees the man of her dreams and realises she spends too much time at home working and talking to her cats Simi and Snape. So she sets up a date with her friends at Gypsy's.

Dallas Vaughn *fans herself as the ame is really hot* lives for his Job as a Detective for the Tulsa P.D. He was married and has no life whatsoever. While getting coffee at yes Gypsy's Nicola bumps in to him. They have several coffee encouters as well as spandex and pizza.

They have good chemistry with one another and Dallas is a total alpha male. The one slight complaint that I have is that Nicola wasn't TSTL but she was a bit dense at times.

I think that the plot was set up well. Some say that there was too much on the suspense rather than the romance aspect but I was happy with the result.

I want Agent Parker to have a book.

I don't usually compare authors but this is like

Well.. I've really enjoyed C.P.'s other books, but this one just didn't hit them mark for me. It was ok.. but I skimmed a good bit. See.. the lead lady Nicola is a historical romance writer.. so throughout the book in different situations, she starts telling her POV from a historical stand point and I just didn't really like that. She'd call herself the fair maiden and Dallas was a war lord.. it was kind of weird. Although chemistry was good and the sex was pretty hot.. it was much hotter in per previous books. They were a little short here. I also never really got on board with the chemistry between Dallas and Nicola either.

That being said, C.P. I have really enjoyed C.P.'s other books. Her mix of suspense and romance is usually spot on and I am definitely a fan of her writing so my lack of "feels" for this particular book will in no way deter me from reading her next book. I like this woman a lot! Not every book can be a winner every time for every body. So moving on until the next one

I chose this book solely on Janja's review and safety gang safe committee. Which pretty much sums it up.

My biggest mistake was reading this book right after Mr. Perfect. The books are in many ways so similar I can't fairly review Property Of, therefore I'm not raiting it. I enjoyed more LH's writing style and I constantly drew a comparison between the books. Now I can't be sure whether I disliked something because it was better written in Mr. Perfect. If you haven't noticed yet, I often compare books, especially if I detect similarities. Don't judge me, I can't help it.

Narration: heroine's is in 1st Person, some scenes are in 3rd Person-medieval style. She thinks in 3rd Person, writes Historical romances and is ott dramatic. At times she gets carried away and starts explaining the scene with the fair-haired maidens and dark warlords.
Lučka didn't like it. Lučka doesn't read Historical Roms and the switch from 1st to 3rd "historical"POV confused her at first, thinking

I give points to the creativity.

The H's narration is in 3rd Person, which I liked. The alpha hero was really OTT possessive, protective and loyal. IMO he was acting more like a biker than the detective.

Didn't guess who's the killer, which was a plus.

I liked the last chapter and epilogue the most. My review would have been different if I hadn't read Mr. Perfect the day before.

P.S.: I loved the heroine's protective twin brothers.

I don't friggin care what anyone else thinks, I loved this book.

It was funny, it was hot and it had me enthralled.

There were a few points towards the start were it was slow but Nicola soon perked it back up, especially with her retelling of things in the third person, that was amusing.

On top of that Dallas was such a great character, he was so solid, in mind and body. A proper man. Not like these skinny jean wearing sockless boys you get now. I loved him.

And that epilogue - bugger me it was so bloody good!

I really enjoyed this book. The h's voice was different and refreshing. I laughed out loud several times while reading it. I also loved the h's twin brothers- great guys! The H was great too- knew what he wanted and went after it. The suspense portion was also well done. I wish we had more time with them once the suspense portion was solved. The part I didn't like was the OW drama. Dallas' ex wife pulled a crazy stunt that was unnecessary in my opinion. Also- the way the H proved his innocence was not with sweet words to or about the h. No- this guy says " I wasn't sleeping with my ex- you know I wouldn't share a woman". That didn't sit right with me. He didn't tell Nicola that he would never cheat, that he cares too much about her. He just says you know I wouldn't share a woman and since his ex was remarried he would be sharing. I wanted him to say there was no desire for the ex, that he would never sleep with her because of his feelings for Nicola. Anyway, it is still 4 stars for me because I loved the rest of the book. 'Cute Meet' standalone story

The MCs of this book had a 'cute meet'. A few of them actually. Nicola is a romance writer who writes historical erotica about hunky, sexy Highlander heroes who look sexy in kilts. At her favorite coffee shop she runs into Detective Dallas Vaughn...literally and ends up spilling coffee all over him. The next few times they see each other she ends up spilling more coffee (and brownie batter?) all over him that his wardrobe is in serious jeopardy. He's got a partner with a wife who's all in his business (for his own good) and she's got two over-protective twin brothers (they are all three triplets) that scare away men.

The book had a little bit of funny, a little bit of suspense and mystery with a touch of sad thrown in. I do like this author's writing style. There is always a few twists thrown in her books.
