The Wild Card Chronicles: The Null Deck Book 1: A Monster Evolution LitRPG Fantasy Harem

Rate this book
In a world where magic is currency, the most dangerous weapon is the boy who has none.

Step into the suffocating smog of Oakhaven, a parasitic city where your worth is measured by the mana in your veins. Feel the gnawing hunger and absolute desperation of a street rat pushed to the brink, forced into the toxic and unforgiving Wilds just to pay his rent. This isn't a glorious tale of a chosen hero draped in gold. It's a gritty, breathless fight for survival alongside a fiercely protective, sentient slime who is as lethal as she is innocent. Together, they will bleed, evolve, and forge a bond that defies the very laws of magic.

Rian Thorne is a "Dud"—a magicless scavenger scraping by in the lightless Gutters, completely invisible to the powerful Guilds that rule from above. But when a ruthless rent hike forces him to take a suicide contract in the toxic Sludge-Fens, Rian stumbles upon a Pre-Collapse artifact that shouldn't exist. The Null Deck. It doesn't just grant him power; it fuses to his bones, draining his very life force to sustain the creature trapped inside—a highly unstable slime variant who needs him to survive just as much as he now needs her.

Hunted by a relentless Syndicate enforcer and a cold-blooded scientist who will dissect them both to uncover the Deck's secrets, Rian must master a terrifying new reality. Without a drop of his own mana, he has to kill to feed the Gauntlet, harvesting the essence of the Wilds' deadliest predators to fuel his companion's rapid, violent evolution.

But the Wilds are merciless, and every victory demands a heavier toll. As the Syndicate's net tightens and his companion begins to destabilize, Rian is pushed into a corner where simple scavenging is no longer enough. He'll have to make an irreversible bargain, sacrificing pieces of his own humanity and future to become something the world hasn't seen in decades. A true threat.

This book was pretty good, but it was quit "grimdark" in many aspects. In fact, it was so grim, it make it tougher to enjoy, as the MC was chewed up and spit out multiple times.

The MC is a "dud", or a person was zero mana or magical capabilities. So he exists as a scavenger, someone to goes out and finds things to sell off to make a tiny bit of money. But his rent is being arbitrarily raised an excessive and unaffordable amount, so he takes a quest to find some scavenge that's above his pay grade. While looking for it, he finds a black "deck box". And ends up opening it, causing his arm to be encased in a black gauntlet. Then he's attacked by a slime, which he absorbs into the gauntlet, and now he has his first bound creature card. Except it's more woman than creature. Of course, his finding that box has set off alarms, and now he's a wanted fugitive who has dissection awaiting him if he's caught. So, he's on the run.

The slime woman he's captured is fairly basic, and has zero personality at first. By the end of the book, she has a little bit of one, and could become interesting in time. But there is zero romance by the end of the book. Considering the book's frenetic pace, there hasn't even been a thought for it in the MC's mind. I'm not sure how the whole "bound woman" thing will play out, and if it will flow as a natural relationship or be a part of the bound thing. I guess book 2 will tell us more.

As I said, the MC is chewed up in this book. He loses a lot of battles, while ultimately winning the important one. But the physical toll he takes is brutal. If you don't like your MC struggling and having the beaten out of them, you'll want to avoid this book. When I say "grimdark", the grim is the MC's physical self by the end of this book. He's effectively been mauled physically, but his persistence is stronger than ever.

I look forward to where this one goes. While the author indicates it's LitRPG, there is very little status or menu interactions to slog things down.
