MORPHINE DREAMSA decade ago Charlie Brewster was on Hollywood’s “A” list. Three best sellers, two hit movies, one bomb and a decade later he lives in a two bedroom apartment in Santa Barbara. As he once self-critically said, after his fall from grace, “It was hard to write with a coke spoon in one hand and a bottle in the other.”Today, Charlie knows more waitresses at Denny’s than maitre d’s in Beverly Hills and he is okay with that. He has come to terms with fames fleeting moment. However, a bout of cancer has him worried about the brevity of life.It is time to reassess, what went right and what went wrong. Why could he never make a relationship endure? More importantly why can’t he finish his romance novel?Using piquant wit and nostalgia for friends and places gone by, Charlie regales the reader with delightful anecdotes of his life as he reflects on the events of the past year.
Having wrote this book, what can I say? But it is perhaps my favorite among the novels and screenplays I've penned. Charlie Brewster is perhaps a bit shallow but with time he finds new depths in his soul. Much to my surprise, thinking this might be a guys book several women told me they were in tears. It's nice to know my words can stir emotions. Take a look, I think you will enjoy the humor, the romance, and the characters of Santa Barbara.
