A chef and a video game developer...such an interesting combination
Him & Her was random choice of audiobook that I decided to pick up this month. The premise sounded really interesting especially since Nori is a chef and Micah is a video game developer. The two meet randomly in a grocery store where Nori cooks food for the hot bar. Once Micah has the opportunity to taste her food, he instantaneously feels the need to have her as his personal chef. Of course, an attraction occurs and things are taken to the next level. So the exciting part of this book wasn't necessarily the romance for me. I liked the two characters together, but the sex scene between them was really weird. Micah was very much into proving that he knew the anatomy of the female body so the entire time they're having sex, readers literally have to watch Micah go through each and every anatomical part in his heard. I know it's important for men to understand the bodies of women, but I think the author went a little too hard in trying to prove that point. I also think the author tried a little to hard to prove that Micah was good enough to date a Black woman. It came off really awkward, but at the same time I know Micah really cared about Nori.
The real star of the show was Colette. What a bitch. I was waiting for Nori to slap that shit out of her every chance she got, but of course it didn't happen. As much as I didn't like her she definitely kept the plot moving and THAT ENDING had me surprised. I think I rather enjoy when the villain of a book is able to effectively keep the plot moving. Unfortunately, I heard that this book has a lot of typos in it. I didn't have that experience listening to the book on audio; however, it makes me really weary to pick up the second one and I also heard that the second book is nowhere near as good as this one. So while the cliffhanger was exciting I think I'm just going to read some spoilery reviews to figure out what happens.
I was initially thrown off by the narration since it is a female narrator for a male POV but then I got used to it and really found that the female narrator brought the character to life. Micah was arrogant but smart and kinda cocky as well. My only turn off for him was that he focused too much on his physical attraction to Nori. Nori was a fun character, I could see a lot of my own characteristics within her. There were a few times that I felt both Nori and Micah acted unnaturally but other than that I enjoyed this first book. I also didn’t enjoy the overly descriptive and clinical sex scenes…a bit off putting for me. I really hope that the second book will be in audiobook format soon since most of the reviews I have seen for this book note the typos and in audiobook format I didn't experience any of that awkwardness. I look forward to seeing where Nori and Micah's story goes.

I have had this book for a while and I have not read it.
This is the introduction to Micah and Nori's story. I like this couple. Nori is full of sassy and Micah loves that she has fire in her bones.
Then just when the relationship looks like it is going along fine something total unexpected happens and we have to read book 2 to understand what happens.
The romance novels I usually read usually star white women. As cliche as this might sound, I wanted to have the experience of picturing “someone like me when I read the character description so I began to look for interracial romances and found Him & Her.
Based upon the synopsis, I did not judge this book by its cover or it’s price (99 cents). I think readers know that not all cheap books are bad/cheesy and not all expensive books are great. However, this books fell flat. The plot had so much room for depth and development. It had potential to romantic and sexy and meaningful. But in order for it to do so, it would have needed a makeover in the form of substantial edits.
One of the major downfalls I found while reading were the constant TYPOS. Beginning, Middle and End. TYPOS. Throughout the book. TYPOS. Words spelled wrong, words missing, words used in the wrong context. They were a major distraction and made me cringe as if I were driving over a pothole that might eat my car. As I read, I couldn’t relax and let my imagination go to work because I just knew I wasn’t far from finding another flaw.
Another major flaw? Point of view. Him & Her is told from Micah’s point of view. While this could have been a nice considering most romances I read are told by the female love interest, I find Micah’s voice archaic and extremely limited. I know Nori was supposed to be mysterious & sassy but you never really know what she’s thinking or feeling. Micah is so narrow-minded that he doesn’t pay attention to much besides her body. While their romance was “developing”, Nori should have been too. I would have loved to read more and about her and get to know something other than her flippant mouth.
Speaking of Nori’s attitude, it was another thing I didn’t enjoy in the book. Despite the author’s attempt to display her as “not the usual”/ different, I still feel as if Nori were portrayed as stereotypical, angry black woman. Her career ambitions are admirable but other than that, there isn’t much left to her. She doesn’t seem to ever just be calm and happy. When the author isn’t trying to make her “seem educated”, and spice her vocabulary up with big/fancy words, she sounds like Big Mama.
As a matter of fact, a lot of the dialogue in Him & Her is not believable. Even in the briefest of conversations, I couldn’t help but think “Who talks like this? Would someone really say this in real life?”
This book is in dire need of editing and revision and extremely redundant.
Although it's a good story, I really don't like the cliffhanger
This is a good story, with a good amount of humour but then it suddenly ends with a cliffhanger that came out of nowhere. As a reader I didn't appreciate the abrupt ending. I gave it 4 stars because it was a good story, with a geeky, but alpha hero, a strong, independent heroine and a humorous story - until the ending. I probably will not purchase the sequel.
I couldn't put this one down. It was hilarious, romantic, and had a little steam. I love that it was from the gamer's POV. I love he and Nori's banter. I can't wait to see what happens next. That Colleen bat had to do something to her. Hurry with next one, Shelby!
I was excited to start this book since I like to read about interracial couples. I can truly say that this book was not for me. This is the story of Nori Blackmon and Micah James. At the very beginning you see Micah trying to convince Nori to be his personal chef since he liked her food so much. She gave him so much attitude that he thought she was a formidable adversary. He thought she would be perfect for him to be around. Her attitude is what attracted him to her, even though he did not truly know it at the time. That spunk her hers showed that she knew what she wanted and that she would not back down from anyone.
This could have led to something beautiful but it fell short. It just seemed like the characters did not know what they truly wanted. The author was forcing conclusions and there was nothing to the story that led up to it. Micah stated that Nori made him want to change his perspective of the world. How could the woman who has been yelling at him and giving him attitude this whole time (he did get her fired from her job, so there was a reason for the yelling) make him change anything? I just did not get it. And then at one point he wanted her to stop with the fierce independence and let him help and take care of her. Why take away the reason he was initially attracted to her? Sometimes black women have to come off as being these strong creatures at all times. I just wished that author did not have to show that by Nori being the typical angry black woman. She did have dreams that she wanted to accomplish.
I did not feel any chemistry between Nori and Micah. I was wondering the whole time while reading how this was going to lead to a romance. It seems like Nori sees Micah as a friend/roommate and Micah sees Nori as an attractive conquest. These characters really did not conversations. They would share 2-3 sentences. Also, the sentences were abrupt and led nowhere.
Where was the character development? I like stories where the characters get to know each other, instead of just going into having sex because they think each other are attractive. With nothing really going on in terms of sex, the reader should learn some significant qualities of each character. I really did not learn much. The author left much to be desired. Well, I lied. I learned that characters are contradictory. What I mean by that is that they say one thing and do another. For example, Nori stated that if she were to date Micah then she could not live with him. She did not want to shack up, but she can have premarital sex with him? Then she stated that she was not sexually advanced but she asked if could milk his prostate. Really!!!??? She then tried to backtrack and say she wanted to explore that. She is a pro ho. Then the author tried to do that falling in love after a month stunt. I did not read anything to bring me to that conclusion and Nori stated that she was in love with Micah the first time they met. OH PLEASE!!!! Ridiculous!!!!
Finally, the cliffhanger was unwarranted. Nothing led to that conclusion. It just seemed like the author was pushing for something so she could write another installment. The whole story was uneventful, uncreative, and uninspiring. There were sooooo many grammatical mistakes, such as missing words, run-on sentences, incomplete sentences, missing punctuation, etc. I had to read sentences over and over. That aspect took away from the reading experience. I love reading about interracial couples. I strongly believe in that type of relationship. However, it was not best represented in this story. Will I recommend this book....no. Will I read the next installment...yes. Only because I have it.
That is the ONLY thing I didn't like about this book which is a shock cause I hate books in the first person... I read them, but I don't like them.
Micah James is a very rich game designer who meet Nori Blackmon at a grocery store that has a restaurant attached to it. He loved her cooking so much he wanted her to be his personal chef. One thing leads to another starting with the shop firing Nori she ends up as Micah roommate and they soon start to fall in love with each other... but then she leaves him and he is BEYOND devastated and so am I there was NO REASON for it, she just up and left... with a simple note... and now I have to read book 2 to find out WHY!!!!! WHY did she leave him?????
This was truly a terrible read. It took me twice the time to read a book this length. The writing style was boring and the characters were severely annoying ... Micah hardly relates like a man. I hate to start a series and unable to complete it. This is definitely in the uncomplete section.
There's nothing I can say bad about this book. I loved it. I loved the way the author chose to tell the story. Maybe the next installment will be told from the females side. I think I know what happened but I won't say anything. Please hurry with the next installment
I found the characters engaging and refreshing. I am a die-hard historical romance reader who tends to stay away from Contemporary novels but I cannot wait for the next part!!!!!!!
Micah and Nori did not meet on the best of circumstances but the chemistry between them was palpable. Their attraction grew over time and bonds were formed. I enjoyed the listen after getting use to some subtleties in Micah and Nori's voices at times. They almost sounded a k ike. The need to pay attention to what was being said was needed.
Johanna nailed strong black woman, spoiled rich crazy woman well.
I loved the dynamic between Nori and Micah. The book for me started off a bit slow even in the midst of the drama, hence the 3 stars. The fact that they were in the same vicinity and didn't speak for that long bothered me a little, but I can understand how it built tension. The story did pick up towards the end, gripping me in and I am looking forward in diving into part 2 to figure out what happens with Nori.
Started out ok, but then became more and more far fetched as it came to the cliffhanger conclusion. If book 2 was on audio, I would give it a listen. If book 2 was on KU, I would even give it a read. But since neither is an option, I don't care enough to seek out the ending to this one. I wish Nori and Micah all the best!
I never read she by Mitchel's books before .... That was a good read, like the storyline and all, my only issue is Micah is the only one telling the story ... Like to get into both main characters's heads if not all... I enjoyed it! About to download #2
I hate cliffhangers but this book is excellent. I can’t wait to read the next part because I think that crazy Collette has something to do with Nori’s disappearance.
It took a while to get into it but when i did it was a good book. A little bummed that book 2 isn't an audible because of my commute but I def want to know what happens next.
This is an excellent read! I read this at one sitting because it was just that good. The characters portrayed in "Him&Her were good. They made the book so realistic!
The characters are good. I would like the guy to be more demanding and brooding, less of a geek. But I still like the characters. Needs a little more spice.
