After freeing himself from the clutches of two treacherous Academy Instructors, Jeremy is stuck in a Rift with no way to easily escape. However, what he does have is an opportunity to improve himself by dispersing the energy inside the Cores within the Rift, finally applying permanent increases to his Abilities; he might even have the opportunity to permanently unlock the Fire Affinity, adding to his growing collection.
Unfortunately, the massive sleeping dragon inside the Rift is aware of Jeremy and has a particular dislike of his mere presence. If he makes one wrong move, he is at risk of annoying the powerful Rift Overseer and being completely and utterly obliterated – and there would be nothing he could do to stop it from happening.
Can Jeremy survive the dangers that the Rift presents while taking advantage of his unique position? Or will he discover that the world outside is somehow even more dangerous than a Level 300 dragon that could destroy an entire empire as easily as breathing?
Regardless of the obstacles in his way, the up-and-coming collector is sure to add even more powerful Affinities to his collection.
This story contains LitRPG progression mechanics and stats, as well as isekai/portal fantasy elements. Contains no sexual content or harems.
This is a strong continuation of Weldin/Jeremy’s journey, once again highlighting how he applies knowledge from Earth to navigate a magical world. The story returns to Rifts, introducing new and interesting Affinities and creative system interactions.
The writing remains clear and engaging without being overloaded with technical detail, which keeps the pace enjoyable. Overall, it’s a very solid addition to the Jonathan Brooks universe—one I always enjoy returning to and feel completely at home in.
Unfortunately i found the book rather juvenile and a bit dull. The MC's cheat learning makes his magic development seem very trivial. Sadly the application of this magic feels rather underwhelming as well.
I enjoy all of this authors stories. I throughly enjoyed book 1. I will give the author a pass as he has a history of solid writing BUT this book is a continuous fight to the point of being ridiculous. It was simply unbelievable. I skipped through a quarter of the book because it was just fighting and unbelievably surviving one catastrophe to the next. Enough all ready. A story is supposed to have some interactions not continuous battles.
Brooks has certain patterns. One of them is that his protagonists lie a lot. They tend to hide their abilities, and often who they are, from people around them. Usually there's no point, and things would be a lot easier for them if they were just honest.
Here, Jeremy decides to run away from his magic school because one of his instructors is plotting against him, instead of doing the obvious thing and telling the dean everything that happened to him and getting protection.
So Jeremy runs away, and ends up joining a monster-hunting squad, despite still being about 12 years old. Magical disasters happen, and he and his squad have to take on monsters that are far, far more powerful than they are, which is pretty typical for this kind of book. On the positive side, Jeremy is eventually forced to reveal some of his abilities to his companions by circumstances, though he still keeps his origins a secret because reasons.
There's a lot of trying to figure his way out of seemingly impossible situations, which is fun. The main negative is that sometimes the solutions don't seem plausible. Stuff Jeremy does sometimes seems like it shouldn't work, that the high-level monsters they defeat should be tough enough to withstand attacks from characters 1/10th their level, even if he's doing unusual things.
Jeremy/Welden our hero grows in power in the dragon’s den. He befriends her and escapes. He joins the Defenders and while getting secretly transported across the Empire has a teleporter accident and him and his squad are dumped in a chaotic no man’s land. They hide from a horde of monsters in a Rift and learn they must defeat it to leave. They beat it and suffer losses. They are forced to leave the Rift and try to traverse the expanse only to be attacked by a mysterious person. Jeremy leads the attacker away from the squad into another Rift and races through leading the attacker on a rampage, ultimately leading to him getting sealed in with the BBEG with the attacker beating on the door. Both attacker and BBEG get defeated. Jeremy and squad are rescued and escorted to another kingdom. Book ends.
A great second book. Not standalone as information from the previous is needed. Expands the world and skill beautifully. Highly enjoyable with a great steady pace. I could scarcely put it down. Please enjoy
I almost hate reading books by this author because they're good and then I have to wait for the next one. That said, that's the problem here. This is a great series. A lot of fun and very well written and engaging. So obviously there's some fun and annoyance with our MC being so young. I don't know if the author's gonna continue or somehow age the MC.... much of the interaction with adults and institutions has a tone because of him being considered adolescent by the system. Of course. The next step, which he wanted to get to before leveling up was adult Cycle. Jeremy is not looking forward to that part. Puberty... again.. considering he's an old soul in a new body. However, something must be done soon as his opponents are getting stronger and stronger And he will definitely need to level up Soon. So looking forward to the next book.
Engaging and Fun I was having such a great time that by 25% when I looked at my progress, I actually felt dread knowing I'd be done soon and not another book was published. By 50% I was glaring at the book for being half over and by 80% I was asking how I was that far already.
I admit it felt like not a lot happened in this book. While there is growth , the character actually doesn't get to do much but it still fun and makes me want to see what will happen next. With how long it will take for the next book, it's pure suffering.
500 pages wasn't enough. I need at least 800, preferably 1,200 next time! I hope the author continues this series and doesn't drop it to start another. This should be one of the main focuses I think.
My first experience with this author was Song Maiden, and just like with that one, I was immediately captured by the unique character development. Unlike a lot of other overpowered isekai stories, Mr. Brooks manages to place his MC into significant danger and trials rather than letting them coast for too long on their cheat skills.
One side note, I think there was a math mistake in the first book regarding how many levels Jeremy could gain with 148K XP, it would be more like level 11, not 16, with the assumed progression increase of 50% more required per level. Of course this can also be canonized by the boy not being all that great at math.
I thought Book 1 was brilliant. Book 2 is even better!
This is one of those series that you’ll want to “bookmark”. The story plot is absolutely fascinating. The characters and the gifted writing create a world that you gladly step into on page 1 and never want to leave. I hope book 3 comes out, soon!
Nice flow, good pacing, my only complaint would be the excessive 'level up' text that broke the flow and only added word count as they were pretty much the same (like 5 pages of the same text at one point). Please put in a summary if absolutely necessary or save the stat blob for the end of the chapter (better yet, an appendix).
This book solidified this series as a future great in the LitRPG genre. The first book lacked character interaction, but this one perfected it with Jeremy’s new squad. I really enjoyed the Rift battles and world building we are seeing. Overall, this was a fantastic book and I’m didn’t looking forward to the next one!
The MC keeps making obvious mistakes that will definitely blow up in his face. The solutions to all his problems are laughably obvious, but no. The author is not creative enough to avoid making the MC stupid to create conflict. It's a horrible anime trope and last writing.
I love the affinity types and how they can be used. I enjoy the character writing and how natural it feels. However, the book is too short! I want more, i can finish the whole book in a day and i want to hear more of Jeremy's story.
The author is keeping the flavour of the story but there were some tedious sections. It’s not bad but could be polished more. It’s progressive but slowly. Some new story threads explained so I’ll read the next book.
Very interesting series. I like the idea of rifts and leveling up. It is also interesting how the world cycles between two gods every 8 years. I highly recommend this book.
What an interesting continuation of the first book! I loved how all the action flowed through the story line. It never felt like something was added just to extend the number of chapters. Awesome story. Can’t wait to read book 3.
Interesting book interesting concepts keeps you all wound up excited to see where it’s going to go as of right now I feel like Jeremy’s actually fallen through time and space and he’s not from this era . Cant wait to see where this goes
This master wordsmith has made another masterpiece. I really would like our boy to grow to man soon. Maybe an accelerated dungeon… This books ends as our guy goes to a new kingdom, and he can finally level past one. Fantastic Stuff
fun continued story and world building. needs editing
I am enjoying this world and the characters in it, but struggled to keep with it as a few chapters towards the end need editing. Several spelling errors and incorrect gender references.
A distinct improvement over the first book. The world building is starting to flesh out a fair bit and some consistent secondary characters are finally showing up. Speaking of which, the secondary characters should really have had more time spent on them. They are weakly established beyond a basic role and premise, and feel rushed.
We still have the ongoing issue of the MC miraculously knowing enough of any topic to apply it to this magic world and getting it to work or resolve a situation every time. He really can't fail at anything? It's interestingly done at least.
While I do enjoy the constant fast pace and chaos, I hope we can have some slower growth and development in the coming book. Maybe age up the character a bit too as I'm so tired of every single secondary character focusing almost solely on MC's age all the time!
Overall though an enjoyable enough read that I'm excited for book 3.
