If you haven't read the first book " Deception", you shouldn't read this review because you will be spoiled.
Retribution picks a few weeks after Deception ended, Claire married Robert even though she doesn't love him and despite Coopers warning.I can't be completely mad at her for going through with it.Coming straight from a foster home, with nothing and no one, of course she's going to want to have some sort of home and stability. That's exactly what he wanted to,that's why he emptied her account and forced her not to work (in the book Deception).
Unfortunately for Claire the honeymoon doesn't last long and Robert starts showing his true nature. He becomes condescending and authoritative. Claire still wants to adopt her foster sister Shelly but of course Robert shoots that down real quick I was really surprised when he got her the job at his firm. We also learn that Coopers warnings were completely justified, Robert is so damn EVIL.Retribution also shows us a different side of Claire as well. She is much stronger than she was in Deception, and finally learns to stand on her own, even though she has Cooper to lean on. She is forced to make some tough decisions, and she tries to weigh out the consequences of those decisions, and how it will effect others
The first Incident with Robert would have been the deal breaker for me but she's so still young and naive so she eventually forgives him. I literally jumped when it happened.Like who hell does he think he is?
.
He's pretty high up on my most hated male literary characters. (Sorry not sorry).
Thankfully Claire snapped out her stupidity and realized that cooper was right. I was proud of her for her strength after the second incident with Robert. She didn't let it break her,she used it as fuel in helping Cooper prove his father killed his mother. Their lust and attraction was felt from their first interactions In Deception.
So dark, intense and completely f***ked up! It was the one of the best scenes in the book. I was just a straight up mess after that. If i didn't already have a stomach ache I would have stress eaten all my daughters fruit snacks. No joke, i was on the edge of my seat as soon as stuff started getting REAL., and then Robert had to go and top himself. I hate him but I loved those scenes because we finally got the truth and they were so intense.
"I had started to wonder if maybe my life wouldn't always hold so much pain if I could just find the courage to let it go.
