I have lots of criteria that a book needs to meet in order to be a 5 star read. One of the main reasons I loved this book was because it’s an idea/concept that I have never read before. I was fascinated with the idea of loving a book so much (Rigby in love with Thornwell) and being sent on a mission within the book. We ALL have those few books that we love and long to be apart of the story. And it was super interesting how the author/narrator breaks the fourth wall and contributes to the story.
As I mentioned, there were a lot of unique concepts for a book here that would just seem hard to pull off (slash/write about without the story getting too confusing) but Jessie pulled it off effortlessly. From what characters are doing when they’re not in a scene or even how characters/stories exist beyond THIS specific Thornwell copy, I didn’t have any unanswered questions. The world just makes so much sense.
Usually you only see 1 or 2 character developments in a book, but I was SO proud and rooting for all 3 Rigby, Chance, and Wick. You fall in love with each of their characters and can relate to each of their struggles.
I also really loved the Christian/biblical elements within the book. If you know, you know and can catch all the bits and pieces of what things represent.
The ending was a perfect chefs kiss. Such a tremendous read!

Thoughts: This book is a delightful blend of humor, heart, and depth. Only a couple pages in and I was already on the verge of tears. 😭 The character’s were beautifully drawn, and I loved how they were literally pitted against their deepest, darkest flaws. It raised their struggles to another level, because they were not only fighting a physical battle, but an internal one; which in many ways is harder. The narrator was a perfect balance of wit and wisdom, making you laugh and think deeper. And the end…. 😱 I was sitting on the edge of my seat the whole time, not wanting to put the book down before I knew what happened. The twist at the end….AMAZING! The world, the characters, the plot; it was all wonderfully crafted into a heart wrenching story that faces the hard truth’s and questions of this broken world.

Reading an advanced copy of Jessie’s novel was such a treat! You can tell she has loved this story and these characters for a long time, and it is special knowing a fellow believer from my church and book lover penned these pages.
This was a fun, fast-paced story that made me want to read more books and write a novel of my own. The narrator was unique and brought a new and amusing twist to the reading experience that I wasn’t expecting. I enjoyed Rigby and Wick the most as characters, and appreciate getting to read from both their POVs throughout the story.
For me, the best part of this book was the idea of that stories and their characters contain a life that holds more weight than some people give them credit for. I also loved how Jessie played with the idea that characters have a life outside of what we see on paper. It was imaginative and made me grateful to be a reader.
Can’t wait to see what else Jessie writes!

For starters, I must disclose that the author Jessie Latimer is a dear friend of mine and I have been watching this novel blossom for a long time, so I'm a little biased :) That being said, I didn't need much convincing to adore this book!! ABTS paints a beautiful story rooted in forgiveness and magic. Rigby, Wick, and Chance are complex characters. I felt so invested in how their stories were going to play out. The way the magical world of Thornwell and the real world interwine was so cool to me. I also love the way this story is a nod to the books I read as a kid, like A Series of Unfortunate Events or the works of Roald Dahl. It had a youthful magical voice but didn't shy away from being dark and gritty either. I wanted a tiiiiinge more romance, but I think the amount of romance was perfect for the intended audience. So lucky to know someone who is doing amazing things!

The most phenomenal novel, written with skill and so much heart. I am so grateful to have received an advance copy from the author to review.
I was destroyed in the best possible way by this book. It tells a story of virtue, selflessness, sacrifice, redemption, and love in all its forms— all with characters who feel real, humor, and fantasy. I LOVED it!

I give this book 4.5 stars! ⭐️
It was such a good book, full of suspense, action, love, and unforgettable characters. I found myself laughing, crying, and banging the floor in rage as I finished the final chapters.
With a hilarious narrator that had me constantly laughing, interesting characters that had me constantly learning, and a beautiful world that had me constantly daydreaming, this book is a must read for you and your friends!

August 1, 2026The most creative book I've ever read. The story and world is imaginative, the characters grounded, and the emotions are raw and gripping. The ending is truly unexpected; I was on the edge of my seat, gasping, tearing up, ranting to my husband, and giggling at the truly satisfying conclusion. This is a once in a life time book that beautifully balances a fantastical fairytale with the realities of grief, regret, friendship and love.

While YA and its many subgenres has been hit-or-miss for me in the past, I’ve read a lot of truly excellent young adult sci-fi and fantasy over the last few years. Again Behold the Stars is among the very best. The story is cleverly written, compelling, and loaded with humor and heart and heartbreak, with characters who grow and change and win you over. I was excited from the very first page, when we were introduced to our snarky, unusual narrator: the book itself. And that excitement never wavered, as Latimer never lost the plot or the structure or a solitary character. She was juggling so much, and yet she never dropped a single ball.
First, let’s go back to the Narrator, the book itself. The voice here was more than a delightful addition, but was really the backbone of the story. I love the combination of commentary and snark we get periodically from that front. It reminded me of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy or Terry Pratchett or Diana Wynne Jones in tone. One of my favorite picture books from childhood, There’s a Monster at the End of This Book, was also brought to mind. When it came to the Narrator, at least. The actual story being told had a completely different style and voice that was immersive and propulsive. The interludes with the Narrator could have been jarring and distracting in less capable hands, but that dichotomy was really effective here.
Onto the story itself. Here we are following Rigby Rhymes, a teenage girl who has largely lived in her favorite book as her health has continued its downward trajectory. She’s dying, and jealousy over her younger sister’s seemingly perfect life is eating her alive. When Rigby dies suddenly and unexpectedly over the Christmas holidays, without having a chance to tell her sister and parents goodbye, she finds herself on the Train of Thought, where she thinks she’s being taken to the afterlife. Instead, her guardian angels have a task for her: go into the world of her favorite book and save the villain. If she’s successful, she’ll get to live out the rest of her days in her favorite story before passing into the afterlife. When things go terribly awry, she finds herself teaming up with that villain, as well as the hero of the story, to face off against the Seven Deadly Sins, personified as a biker gang.
I enjoyed everything about this. The balance between meta, fourth-wall breaking and the inner plot, between the humor and the heart, was perfect. There was not a single chapter or scene or page that felt superfluous or in any way unnecessary. And Latimer gives us so much character development across our three perspective characters. Even our Narrator grows over the course of the novel, which I thought was so fun. And I love the bookishness carried throughout the story. If you’re a lover of portal fantasy, clean but snarky YA, or you just love stories with heart and a strong voice, this should absolutely find its way onto your reading radar when it’s released on August 11th. I immediately preordered a copy after I finished the last page, because I know this is a book I want in my home, to share with my friends and nieces and to revisit someday in the future.

While it might be cliche to call a book "magical," that is the best word I can think of for this. I'm not much of a YA reader, so I wasn't entirely sure how I was going to feel about this one. I ended up loving the experience. There is a realism to this story that doesn't clash with the moments of indulgent magical whimsy, but instead enhances both. Characters bleed a lot here, and it never feels like needless gore; it's just the practical result of teenagers going up against enemies with sharp claws, psychopathic attitudes, fireballs, bombs, knives, so on and so forth. The dedication to keeping the story in a hopeful tone in spite of everything is quite lovely, and the author is so good at keeping her characters in increasingly horrific spots of trouble that you find yourself doubting a happy ending in spite of genre conventions. I won't say whether that happy ending does happen or not, but I will say that even in the absolute darkest moments of this story, there is a focus on hope, and that is beautiful to me.
I'm reminded of finishing the Inkheart trilogy, as well as Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time. If you enjoyed either of those, I think you'll find a lot to love here. Even if you haven't, and if you're not much of a YA reader like me, I still recommend giving it a shot. I had a wonderful time and got so comfortable with this book, and it felt like it got comfortable with me as well.
I'm reminded of finishing the Inkheart trilogy, as well as Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time. If you enjoyed either of those, I think you'll find a lot to love here. A fresh, rollicking adventure that is a love song to books and stories. When seventeen-year-old Rigby dies, she gets a second chance by being transported into the world of her favorite book. However, in exchange, she has to redeem the story’s villain, Wick. This book takes some unexpected turns and feels very fresh. The pacing is also good. I am a fairly slow reader and I finished this one in just a few days! I couldn’t put it down! The interjection of the narrator is truly something I have never seen before, and it totally works for the story. The voice and tone throughout were fun and unique, too.
One critique I have is that wish we got to know a little more about the story world. It seemed so cool, but then we didn’t spend as much time there as I expected, and I wanted to grow to love it the way Rigby did. I also wanted a little more from the love story. However, the subtle romance subplot makes this the perfect lower YA read for both girls and boys. Overall, a lovely, fun tale that fills the need for excellent and clean YA literature! 💜 I hope to see more from this author soon!

Again Behold the Stars is a wonderful mix of whimsy and seriousness, of adventure and emotional growth. I was at the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next.
The world building and how Latimer shared it with us was hands down my favorite part. Having the book share it's opinions with us about what is happening is what I didn't know I needed. And the motorcycle gang of the seven deadly sins? Chefs kiss. Each new piece was drenched in the familiar but also so new and different that I couldn't wait to see what happened next.
One of my other favorite parts was the swap between the hero and the antagonist inside the book. Wick was amazing and so well developed and I loved having his perspective on why his life has been a challenge up until this point. And on the flip side... Chance Golden having a meltdown about screwing everything up? Amazing.
The only thing I wished I had was a little more time and breathing room to process some of the action and the twists but even with that, Again Behold the Stars definitely deserves the 5 star rating! Can't wait to see what comes next from Latimer!

Jessie Latimer's Again Behold the Stars is a captivating read, sure to resonate with young adult readers. The novel's fast-paced plot and intricate, branching narrative brim with a lively literary energy that is entirely captivating. Breaking the fourth wall with the narrator directly addressing the reader reminded me of a children’s book I loved—The Monster at the End of This Book. With its exploration of multiple narrative paths and the existential resonance of fiction upon reality, this is unequivocally a unique writing style. The trio of teenagers embarked on a grand adventure, but their blunders repeatedly contorted the narrative, much like a tightly wrung rag. The fight to overcome personal vices while simultaneously attempting to save themselves and their world illuminates the internal battle between the hero and villain found in everyone. The narrative employs snarky humor to balance out heavier themes dealing with grief and messy relationships, even death. This portal fantasy story offers an engaging read for any fan of young adult fiction. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher but was not required to leave a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

I have read many fantasy books over the years, all with their own unique styles, but l have never seen one with all of them combined. But here we have it: Mrs. Jessie couldn’t have done a better job combining all of the best books into one. A dash of comedy, a lot of adventure, some spiritual thought, and a hint of age appropriate/innocent “romance”; the perfect potion for a perfect book.
I would laugh a some parts and want to cry at others, and maybe at a paragraph or two l would get frustrated at the characters! And that is a hard thing for an author to accomplish in their readers! I highly recommend that you get Again Behold the Stars, and l would be delighted to see it turn into a series.”

This book was so much more than I expected it to be! I love the idea of being able to transport into your favorite stories, I always wanted to escape into my books, so that was the first thing that initially sold me on this book. The emotional depth and character development that happens throughout this story is fantastic and making the overarching bad guys the Seven Deadly Sins, was so well done and I loved the interactions.
The enemies to more was unexpected, but I rooted for it the whole time, the quirky narrator was one of my favorite pieces and adding the extra voice in such a fun way, makes me wish all narrators were like that! And watching a typical novel hero wrestle with what makes him special and battle with what’s him or what was written for him, was such a unique way in creating extra conflict.
I don’t want to spoil the twist towards the end of the book, but I absolutely loved the idea, thought it was super clever and made for a wonderful ending of the book. Jessie’s debut novel is incredible, I eagerly await what’s next for her and you should too! Five stars from my shelf to yours!
The enemies to more was unexpected, but I rooted for it the whole time, the quirky narrator was one of my favorite pieces and adding the extra voice in such a fun way, makes me wish all narrators were like that! And watching a typical novel hero wrestle with what makes him special and battle with what’s him or what was written for him, was such a unique way in creating extra conflict.

This book was such a fun read! Every reader has a favorite book with a world they would love to immerse themselves in, and Rigby Rhymes got to do that… with a twist.
It was refreshing to read a book with such a unique plot point— the narrator. The narrator being its own character popping into the story, providing context, and adding humor as well as emotion is truly what knocked this story out of the park for me. There were so many fun, and sometimes heartbreaking, twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat.
Rigby was such a strong, relatable female character who I found myself routing for the whole way through. Wick and Chance were both written so beautifully, causing me to constantly question whose side I’m actually on. The character development in this story was unmatched.
I definitely recommend this as a fall or winter read, and I would LOVE to read a sequel to this book or whatever Jessie writes next!

These days my time to read is at about 9:45pm after the cuddles are finished, the dishes loaded, and the house tucked in for the night.
I’ve been looking forward to my nightly reading sessions more than every because Again Behold the Stars draws me out of the day to day tasks into an all together different world and journey layered with creativity, joy, and sorrow.
One of the most captivating aspects of this book is how the words on the page do not feel like just black markings on a printed page, but leap out at me as if I was truly interacting with each character’s tone of voice, body language, and emotions. I truly feel I have an entire soundtrack with voiceovers and vivid movie scenes playing across the screen of my mind while reading. So to all the mom’s in the world wondering what book to spend precious sleeping hours reading- THIS one is it:)

Again Behold the Stars by Jessica Latimer is a dream come true for every passionate reader who has ever wished to dive into their favorite novel, save the day, and maybe fall in love along the way. This very meta book is aptly bookended with one of the most original starts and ends I've ever had the privilege of reading. ABTS is unapologetically quirky and magical, hopeful and honest. Jessie trusts her readers to follow every twist and turn, giving us a story that will inspire the young and old to live more boldly and kindly.
Reading Jessie's writing feels like when you see a sculpture that looks so effortless and natural and beautiful, and then you realize that a human chiseled it out of marble or stone, and suddenly you can't imagine how the artist managed it.
I fell in love with our morally gray heroes who proved protagonists need not be perfect to be good. I can't wait to recommend this unique and timeless book to friends.

"Again Behold the Stars" by Jessie Latimer is a book I definitely enjoyed reading. In the story, Rigby Rhymes travels into a book to change the ending—something I have often dreamed of doing! Along the way, she befriends the characters she meets. I loved how the characters in the book Rigby traveled into were different when she met them in person. The plot was really interesting, and I always wanted to keep reading to find out what happened next. The writing was detailed and helped me visualize the story. It was also cool to see how the characters overcame the temptations that stood in the way of their mission. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves adventure stories.

Reading an advanced copy of Latimer's novel was a highlight of my summer. This book had me crying and laughing from the first chapter. Latimer's writing is not only honest and emotional, but also whimsical and enchanting. There were so many lines where I had to pause reading to digest the way she beautifully summed up a truth about life and the human experience.
This fast-paced novel is full of heart, wit, and dynamic characters who stayed with me long after the book was finished. One thing I particularly enjoyed was Latimer's themes (such as sacrificial love/redemption). They brought a depth that challenged me in how I view/live my own life.
I won't spoil anything but the sister relationship also hit me HARD in this book.

This book is everything you could ask for in a novel. A thrilling quest? Check. Witty humor? Check. Heartbreak? Check. A twist you didn’t see coming? Check. Jessie tells a very original story with a truly unique narrator who is a character itself and has actual conversations with you as the reader. It made me laugh out loud and ugly cry from beginning to end. The writing pulls you in and I can imagine each scene she describes. The development of the characters is satisfying, and you root for each of them as they battle the temptation of the deadly sins. There is a tad bit of romance but it is sweet and clean. I loved reading this book as an adult and I know my kids will love reading this when they’re older. Could not recommend this book more!

I loved it. Not just because of the story itself, but because of how completely original the reading experience felt. The structure of the book genuinely surprised me in a way that very few fiction books do. It somehow made me feel immersed in the story while also making me think about storytelling, perspective, and even my own role as a reader at the same time.
It’s hard to explain without spoiling anything, but it felt like the book was playing with the boundaries between reader, author, and story in a really clever and intentional way. After finishing this book, most fiction now feels a little “normal” in comparison.

This book is amazing! I haven’t picked up a book that drew me in so quickly and kept me invested so well in a long time! It is a wonderful story full adventure, mystery, heartbreak and joy, and an ending that keeps you on your toes. It is well written and beautifully reflects truth, beauty, and excellence. The author’s faith is obvious without being preachy, and will be an encouragement to any who read it! The characters were endearing and relatable, and each one’s character arc was exactly what it needed to be. The villains were unnervingly close to real life, which made the stakes of the story feel even greater. I can’t recommend this book enough!!! 100000/10 stars!

Stayed up WAAAYYY too late finishing this unique, creative, and fascinating book! What a clever structure with a wry narrator (unnamed, part of the book itself) and a surprisingly deep perspective on fate, predestination, and whether people can be redeemed. I really loved Rigby, the main character, and her love for her family shines throughout the book. I had a hard time putting this down (obviously) because the pace was quick, the writing engaging, and I laughed out loud a few times. Especially at the author's tongue-in-cheek references to standard YA tropes. Nice little romance storyline too. Can't wait to read another book by Jessie Latimer!

Reading Again Behold the Stars was like returning to many of my oldest, most beloved reads, blending the wit of the Heroes of Olympus series with a fresh, surprising take on heroes and villains. Its sharp-tongued protagonist and surreal, unpredictable plot kept me guessing, laughing out loud, and deeply invested in what came next. I won’t spoil anything for readers, but the ending had me on the very edge of my seat and kept me there until the final page. This is an excellent read that sparks the imagination and simultaneously stirs the reader to contemplate moral dilemmas we all face. The story is engaging, and very clever in the development of the characters. There were a few points in the book that genuinely surprised me as this story was different than anything I had ever read. At this point, I have read through the story twice and would highly recommend it as a great read for young people and a book parents can feel safe letting their kids read. So good!
