Singer Margaret (Meggie) Montley needs money… fast. Her friend is in a dire situation with nowhere to turn. While Meggie is on the brink of stardom, it’s not soon enough to save her friend.
Harry Dempsey is out to avenge the deaths of his father and brother at the hands of a ruthless gangster. But trouble spirals out of control when Meggie Montley shows up the night he meets his nemesis to settle the score. Saving the impetuous woman from a crime lord might be easier than saving her from her own reckless behavior.
Kathy L Wheeler is an award winning author in her contemporary and historical romances that include suspenseful twists. Her current series Rebel Lords of London is now available beginning with The Earl's Error,. Number six, Captivated by His Countess is scheduled for March 7, 2023. :)
Kathy L Wheeler loves the NFL, the NBA, musical theater (don't ask how her how many times she's seen Phantom of the Opera (12); or Wicked (7)), travel, (Europe, Grand Cayman, Mexico, All over the US), reading (practically a book a night), writing (15 books and counting) and karaoke (well....what can I say). She assists other authors in critiquing, formatting, and creating covers for their publishing dreams.
She writes contemporary and historical stories where the heroines save themselves and the heroes who honor their courage with suspense and humor.
She recently migrated from Oklahoma to the Pacific Northwest with her musically talented, lawyer husband, her adorable dog Angel (who lives up to her name...mostly) and their snooty cat (who is truly a snob), Carly.
This was the third book I read in the Martini Club 4 series, and I was intrigued to see that it dealt more with the bootlegging side of the 1920s era. During the first two novellas, I wondered about what Meggie was up to, as she flitted in and out of the narratives, always up to something, and appearing when you didn't expect it.
Turns out, Meggie was out risking her life, and trying to help Eliza escape the clutches of prostitution. She gets into some tight spots, and I was on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next, and if she'd escape danger.
The character of Harry wasn't quite as sympathetic as Vince (in Eliza's story), but I still found him quite interesting, especially the balance between good and bad. He's a bit of a thug, but his rescue and care of Meggie reflects his interior goodness.
It was a satisfying read, and I'd recommend you read all four novellas.
Lady Margaret decided she wasn’t going to live the life her mother had planned for her. She and three friends ran away from England to America to make a new life. Lady Margaret had always dreamed of singing and acting and her adventures began once she found a job singing in the 501 Club. She dreams of Harry, the man sitting at a corner table watching her every night and Harry has a few dreams of his own where Lady Margaret is concerned. Harry is looking for the killers of his father and brother, which result in Harry and Margaret ending up together on quite the adventure with some very bad guys.
This book’s setting of the 1920’s was different from what I usually read but I really enjoyed this book and the author had a way of telling the story which made me imagine all the sights and sounds of that era. A great read, check it out!
I received a digital copy of Reckless, for an honest review. I honestly loved it! I LOVE the roaring 20's. Reckless is part of the Martini Club series. This book had DRAMA! It was edge of your seat intense. Bootlegging, mobsters. It begins with 4 friends Margaret 'Meggie, (the heroine in this story.) Jessica, 'Jessie', Charlotte 'Charli', and Eliza. Four young woman, who for various reasons, decide to flee their home in England, and head to America, NY, in 1924. I adored the Hero, Harry Dempsey, and loved the heroine, Meggie. I can't wait to read the other girl's stories. And will definitely be reading MORE from Ms. Wheeler.
"As if she were some empty headed piece to be moved about a chessboard."
This amazing line in the prologue is a perfect example of how this book is written...fantastically! The author definitely has a way with the written word.
This second book I read in the Martini Club series was another one I could not put down! Meggie's personality is similar to Jessica's in Reckless...headstrong, fearless, and fun to follow on their journey into America.
I can't wait to read the other two books in this series.
The book has all the intrigue drama and mystery of the great Roaring 20's. There are bootleggers, gangsters, Harry Dempsey, a man out for revenge, and Lady Margaret, a singer on the brink of fame. Together they will have a great adventure while falling in love. I love the cover! Would highly recommend this book to everyone especially roaring 20's fans. Ms. Wheeler is a must read.
This 1920’s Series is The Bomb!!! Love it!! As well as Ruined, this book was also an awesome read! Trying to help her friend, Eliza, Lady Margaret “Meggie” secretly goes on a supposed bootlegging run to earn money that Eliza needs. So, according to a newspaper, Lady Margaret turns into Lady Bootlegger. Harry Dempsy, who sits at a corner table watching Meggie every night she sings at Club 501, also is on this supposed bootlegging run. This book has romance, bootlegging, mobsters and lots of drama/mystery. You just have to read this book to find out what becomes of Meggie and Harry. I would recommend this book to everyone. You won’t be disappointed. I can’t wait to read the other two books in this series, Rebellious and Runaway.
Another fun installment in the Martini Club 4 series. Meggie, the heroine, is audacious, brave, and inspiring. Wouldn't we all love to be so brave to save our friends! And we get a little glimpse of the underbelly of New York City. Of the four, I think this is the grittiest. But not too gritty. And so much fun!
