Stretched

Rate this book
9.5 out of 10 Rating by the BookLife "Michelle writes with fearless candor, incorporating an attention-getting opening into excellent pacing that never lets up."

"[Stretched] doesn't tidy up trauma. It shows how a person can hold it, stretch with it, and still feel free. For anyone who's had to be the strong one, it feels like a hand on the shoulder, and a reminder that the story isn't over until you say it is. I'm glad she dared to tell it."

BookBelow

Michelle must face the harsh reality of her childhood in order to overcome the pain that has long held her captive. From the time she was five years old, when she witnessed the near-death experience of her sister, her world was shaped by trauma. Her mother struggled with mental illness, she was abandoned by those she loved, and she was scarred by sexual assault, carrying the wounds of her past into every relationship she formed as an adult.

Stretched follows Michelle's true story through the long aftermath of trauma, and how early abandonment and violence seep into identity, self-worth, and the choices she made. Similar to The Glass Castle and Educated, her memoir depicts how hope can thrive in the face of incredible hardship, how pain can be transformed into resilience, and how forgiveness can free oneself of the burdens that lie within.

Since I was a young girl, I enjoyed writing in my diary. However, I didn’t seriously consider writing a book until more recently. Prior to my career as an author, I worked in finance for a large corporation, finding it stressful and unfulfilling. It was when I gave birth to my first child in April of 2020 that I decided to focus my energy on family and raising my son.

During this time, I pursued writing as a hobby and started working on my first comedic feature screenplay. I realized how much I enjoyed the process of artistic creation and continued it through my books. I am a happily married, stay-at-home mom of two boys.

An excellent, well-written, raw memoir. Honest, vulnerable, and beautifully told. A powerful story that stayed with me long after I finished it.

Great book! I thoroughly enjoyed reading Stretched. Michelle’s memoir was very moving and not exactly what I expected (I’ve been a fan of her comedic writing for years- Stretched was not the same!)

I couldn’t put it down. However, I was also uncomfortable during many portions of the book as I felt like I was a voyeur and eavesdropping on the Author’s life - which I guess I was given that this is a memoir.

Highly recommend! Also check out her lighter writings.

Okay, this book? Not here to comfort you, here to shake you a little.

Stretched by Michelle Cray is raw, unfiltered, and honestly, kind of impossible to read without feeling something. It doesn’t sugarcoat trauma or wrap it in a pretty bow, it just lays it out exactly as it is. And yeah, it hits hard.

From page one, Michelle throws you straight into her reality, no warm-up, no “ease into it” vibes. Childhood trauma, family chaos, and experiences that leave a mark way deeper than surface level, it’s all there. It’s heavy, but not in a draining way, more like you need to sit with it kind of way.

What really stood out is how this book doesn’t “wrap things up nicely.” There’s no perfect healing arc or dramatic turnaround moment.

Instead, it shows what it actually looks like to live with trauma, to stretch with it (yes, the title hits different once you get it), to carry it, and still somehow keep moving forward. It’s uncomfortable in the best way.

And her voice?? So raw, so honest, like she’s just sitting in front of you telling you everything she’s been holding in for years. It never feels performative, just painfully, beautifully real. You can feel her taking her power back, page by page.

If you’re into books that emotionally destroy you but also heal you a little, this one’s for you. Just maybe don’t read it when you’re already in your feelings or do, if you want the full experience 😭

This deeply moving memoir is a testament to resilience and the courage it takes to reclaim one’s voice after decades of profound pain. You will be hooked after the first chapter and find yourself pouring hope into every part of Michelle’s life, just as she did.

Stretched is a brave, unflinching memoir, and ultimately a hopeful one. Michelle Cray writes about what it costs to carry other people’s pain and what it takes to finally put it down. It’s the kind of book that stays with you.

The book opens with Michelle at five. Her sister Sam gets diagnosed with leukemia and suddenly you’re in the hospital with them, the spinal taps, that awful 65% survival number. And that’s just the start. Her mom goes through bipolar disorder, manic episodes, shock therapy, psychiatric wards. Her dad’s working himself to the bone and the marriage is coming apart. Michelle has to grow up fast: hiding her mother’s illness, stepping between her parents, later facing assault, bad relationships, her own grief. By the end you’ve been with her through her mother’s Alzheimer’s, hospice, the death. What got me was how she keeps trying to understand rather than blame, and how writing is what finally lets her make sense of it.

Cray’s voice is direct and intimate, and she tells it like someone who’s done the work and isn’t performing. Sam, Dad, Mom, and later Seth feel fully real. The prose is clear and quietly powerful. The hardship is intense, but that intensity is what makes the resilience so powerful, the mess, the guilt, the “I deserve better” moment, and the hard-won peace with her father and her mother’s memory.

The book doesn’t tidy up trauma. It shows how a person can hold it, stretch with it, and still feel free. For anyone who’s had to be the strong one, it feels like a hand on the shoulder, and a reminder that the story isn’t over until you say it is. I’m glad she dared to tell it.

Stretched by Michelle Cray is the kind of story that doesn’t flinch - and that’s exactly what makes it powerful.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

At its core, this book digs into the quiet, complicated wreckage of family. It captures what it feels like to grow up in the in-between spaces of divorce, where love doesn’t disappear, but it fractures - and kids are left trying to make sense of pieces that don’t quite fit anymore. There’s a raw honesty in how those dynamics unfold, especially through the lens of memory, where what hurt then still echoes now.

What really stands out is the way the story leans into journaling as both a coping mechanism and a narrative tool. It feels intimate, almost intrusive at times, like you’re reading thoughts that were never meant to be seen. But that’s also where the healing begins - because putting words to pain, even messy, unfiltered ones, becomes a form of survival.

And then there’s the mental health aspect - handled in a way that refuses to sugarcoat. This isn’t a polished or romanticized version of mental illness.

It’s uncomfortable. It’s, at times, gruesome in its honesty. But that truth matters. It shows the reality behind the labels, the way mental illness can ripple through a family, shaping relationships, perceptions, and self-worth in ways that are hard to untangle.

Stretched doesn’t try to offer easy answers. Instead, it sits with the discomfort, the confusion, and the lingering questions. It’s a story about what we carry from childhood into adulthood - and what it takes to finally start setting some of that weight down.

STRETCHED is brilliantly written with truth, grace and compassion. It takes a strong heart to share traumatic childhood experiences and strength to move forward in life with courage. Despite those difficult moments the author experienced she survived, and with love and resolve she found her way out of darkness . This memoir is emotional- keep a box of tissues nearby.

I instantly became engrossed in this touching and powerful memoir. It is a story of multiple traumas and the resilience that follows. Inspiring and courageous, the author touches on many topics that are not often talked about, but should be. Great read!
