The Echo Below

Rate this book
Perfect for readers of Where the Crawdads Sing and The Lighthouse Witches, The Echo Below is an atmospheric coastal suspense novel about grief, inheritance, and the haunting pull of the sea.

"Some legacies are carried in blood. Others are written on the tide."

When Isla March learns her grandmother has mysteriously vanished, she returns to Greyhook, Washington, the fog-shrouded coastal town she thought she’d left behind. What begins as a brief visit soon becomes a dangerous reckoning with her family’s secrets, and the haunting mystery that rises from the deep.

In the March House perched high on the bluff, Isla uncovers cryptic notes, salt-stained journals, and whispers of something ancient bound to her bloodline. The sea, once the site of her greatest sorrow, now calls to her with an unnerving familiarity.

As she reconnects with her childhood friend, Cal, strange disturbances ripple through Greyhook. Tourists are drawn into the water, and locals vanish without a trace. Isla begins to fear that her family's connection to the sea runs deeper than she ever imagined — and now it's rising again.

Bittersweet tides and worth every tear!

When I read a book, the main thing I’m looking for is emotion. I want a story that makes me feel something and this book absolutely delivered. In the most devastatingly beautiful way.

The prologue had me in tears right from the start, so I knew right away I was in for something special.

I found out about this book on a random celebrity blog and thought, sure... I'll read it. I went into this completely blind, not knowing what to expect, and I’m glad I did.

The relationships in this book feel incredibly real. Even the smallest moments like the old woman waving with the apples felt authentic. Friendly enough to say hello, but guarded enough to keep her distance. Little touches like that made the world feel believable.

Heartbreak runs like a quiet thread through the entire story. You can see grief shaping the choices the characters make, guiding their actions in ways that feel painfully human. Watching that unfold was honestly beautiful.

And the letting go moment… I’m an absolute sucker for the kind of love that longs to exist but isn’t allowed to. Those tender, stolen moments between them carried such weight. You could feel the ache in every interaction.

The spice is tasteful. I’ll admit I blushed a little, but it’s written beautifully.

What I loved most was how that moment is later echoed in a way that feels almost like a reflection in water. The first shatters you… and the second gently pieces something like hope back together.
Then those final moments hit and my only thought was: what the actual… (F)
I sat there with tears in my eyes, forcing myself to keep turning the pages.

I’ve loved mermaids, sirens, and ocean folklore my whole life, and after reading this story I don’t think I’ll ever stand near the sea again without feeling it stir somewhere in the back of my mind.

The descriptions are stunning. I could feel the warmth of the sun, taste the salt in the air, and feel the waves crashing against my calves. The writing pulls you under and holds you there, immersing you completely.

I loved this book.
I didn’t love crying… but the story kept me buoyant long enough to drown me in suspense, only to release me again just long enough to breathe through the emotion.

And now I’m left with a bittersweet longing for a second book that might one day give the ending my heart is still hoping for.

I absolutely loved The Echo Below. Cavill has delivered a beautifully written tale of love, family secrets and the mysterious power of the sea. I was hooked by the endearing characters that are tender and real; and by the relatable yet complex relationships found in a small town with a long history. I couldn’t put it down, truly a delight to read, eagerly anticipating more from Cavill.

I seriously loved The Echo Below by Heather Cavill. It completely pulled me in from the start. Isla heading back to her coastal hometown after her grandmother disappears had me hooked right away, and the family secrets unfolding kept me turning pages.
The romance is sweet and real, but honestly, the best part for me was Isla’s almost-mystical connection to the sea. It gives the whole story this moody, magical vibe without feeling over the top. I didn’t want it to end — it’s one of those books that just stays with you.

A compelling and original story with rich, descriptive language that creates a mystical and ethereal atmosphere around a love story - both for a place and people. The myths and legends rooted in the sea and shoreline are a highlight, bringing vivid imagery to life. It feels magical and familiar. You can imagine windswept walks along the coast lost in the legends of the sea.

From the very first page of The Echo Below, I was completely hooked. Isla is intriguing from the start, and the mystery surrounding her begins almost immediately. I found myself unable to put the book down, desperate to understand what was happening to her and where her journey would lead. That sense of urgency and curiosity carries beautifully through the entire story.

One of my favorite aspects of the novel is how seamlessly the sea is woven into every layer of the narrative. It isn’t just a backdrop—it feels alive, present in the emotions, the tension, and the atmosphere of the story. The descriptions are vivid and immersive, capturing the beauty, power, and unpredictability of the ocean in a way that makes you feel as though you’re standing on the shore yourself. The imagery is simply stunning.

The love story is another highlight. Sweet, tender, and genuinely heartwarming, it adds a softness to the mystery and depth to Isla’s journey. It feels authentic and adorable without ever overshadowing the larger story unfolding around it.

Heather Cavill’s writing is brilliant and eloquent throughout. Her prose flows effortlessly, balancing suspense, emotion, and rich description with remarkable skill. The Echo Below is a beautifully crafted novel that lingers long after you turn the final page.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves atmospheric storytelling, compelling mysteries, and a love story that feels both tender and true.

This beautiful debut novel blends mysticism and folklore with modern-day romance and a relatable cast of quirky yet endearing small-town characters, serving as a love letter to the ocean and to the tight-knit communities that form along its shores. For anyone who feels rooted to the coast, the ties that bind us to the ocean are undeniable, and this is a story that illuminates just how deeply those connections can run. Heather Cavill’s vivid imagery and immersive descriptions had me hooked from the first few pages, and kept me reading into the wee hours of the morning as the story evolved from a tale of homecoming and self-discovery to include themes of grief, belonging, and the struggles of navigating complex family secrets.

By reshaping a traditional siren’s tale into something fresh and contemporary, Cavill tells a story that feels timeless and familiar without becoming predictable. The sea maintains a constant, haunting presence that sets a delightfully unsettling tone, while the characters’ raw vulnerability and subtle humour add warmth and balance. The sweet, slow-burning romance delivers just the right amount of spice, and I found it difficult to say goodbye to these characters when the story ended. This is a story that lingers, a definite five-star read for me, and I’m eager to see what Cavill writes next!

Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy of this book!

WOW. This one completely pulled me in with its atmosphere and emotion. It gave me such strong vibes of The Sirens by Emilia Hart (which I loved)- so if you loved that one, you definitely need to pick this up.

Set in a foggy coastal town, this story is rich with mystery, family history, and a haunting connection to the sea. I loved the eerie, magical feeling woven throughout the book. The setting itself felt like a character, with the ocean always present and pulling everything together.

The story blends grief, legacy, and something deeper and more mystical in such a compelling way. I was especially drawn to the emotional core of the novel, and the love story woven throughout was truly heartbreaking.

If you love ocean settings, atmospheric reads, family secrets, and a touch of the supernatural, this is absolutely one to add to your list...!
