I can’t believe I read this whole series. I’m disappointed in myself for doing it. I guess I kept thinking it would get better; or that I would rewarded with a WOW ending. Instead it was a convoluted mess.
This is the complete Starship New Jersey series, all 10 books in one complete audiobook. The series follows Tad Thatcher, a young Commander who is initially with the US Space Forces, but without a command. His Superiors recognise that he is ready for command, but more than that, Thatcher has the potential to be something special. In this future, several things have happened. A wormhole between our galaxy and another galaxy known as the Dawn Cluster has been found, and humanity has colonised multiple systems. This has been possible, because ‘Corporations’ have taken over space, with dozens of competing factions fighting for resources. The Corps as they are known, each have their own military and space fleets – but these are limited under an agreement. One of these, Frontier Security, offers Thatcher a Captain’s position on a Light Cruiser, the New Jersey. Their CEO, Veronica Rose is keen to have her company become one of the main players in the Dawn Cluster, and she sees Thatcher as the key to her plans. Thatcher is initially reluctant to leave the Sol sector and join Frontier, as he has a pregnant wife on Earth, and the Sol sector has been dealing with attacks from an alien race known as the Xantic. But his wife convinces him that it is the right thing to do – and so he goes. However, things don’t go to plan. Shortly after entering the cluster, the wormhole closes for unknown reasons, separating the Dawn Cluster from Earth and Thatcher from his wife. Thatcher though, doesn’t miss a beat, taking up the challenge, and rallying the crew of the New Jersey, leading them in several one sided victories in battles in which they are severely outnumbered. Thatcher has a keen eye for tactics and the flow of battle, being able to follow everything that happens. Without giving too much away, we follow Thatcher as he, and the CEO of Frontier, Veronica Rose, try and take a grip on the Dawn Cluster as it has become rife with pirates and squabbles with greedy Corporations. The closure of the wormhole has only made things more desperate. This is a fascinating series, one that is part military sci-fi in which we have epic space battles following Thatcher and his tactical genius, but at the same time, the story is also a complex political thriller, as we follow the different corporations fight for dominance in a sector that is full of precious resources. As the series moves from book 1 through 10, we get to learn more about Thatcher, his history and how he becomes this brilliant genius, mainly from time with his grandfather who was a Captain in the US Space Force. Bartlett has always written powerful, and clever character driven stories, and this is no exception, with Thatcher, Veronica Rose, and multiple other major characters amongst the crew and Corporations. The story is not just about the Corporations though, threading through this constant intrigue, and political interplay of the Dawn Cluster, there is a much more insidious threat at play. The same threat that has plagued humanity in the Sol Region, that they had to fight off 50yrs ago, and are now fighting again, is in the Dawn Cluster – the Xanthic. It was Thatcher’s grandfather that defeated the Xanthic all those years ago, and inspired Tad to become a Captain in the Space Fleet. Bartlett has created something special with this series, with his unique blend of characters, epic story telling, and meticulously detailed battle scenes – this is one series that just shouldn’t be missed. And with all 10 books in one boxset – it is an absolute bargain!! This is Scott Bartlett at his best!
Exceptional Mil Sci-Fi/Space Opera – this is Bartlett at his best!!!
From the brilliant mind of Scott Bartlett comes the long-awaited full anthology of all the Spacers books together in one box set. From the humble beginnings of a young officer getting his first command of the New Jersey, to getting stuck in the Dawn Cluster after the wormhole collapses, to ancient Earth enemies that haven't been seen in 50 years. It is all here for you.
Tad Thatcher told his dad that he wanted to be a starship captain like him. Little did he know that he would become a legend in his own right, surpassing the abilities of his own heroes. A strategist, a captain, a man of action who would beat impossible odds, over and over again.
This is a series of books about war in the farthest reaches of known space. A government space force that would be pretty much useless. Private military corporations, which act more like warlords and mafia-style organizations, and well-equipped pirates are the soup du jour in the Dawn Cluster. To make matters worse, Earth's ancient enemies have returned, with some really unique and powerful tech that outclasses that of the humans.
Through these 10 volumes of non-stop action, space warfare at its finest, and gripping, cannot put it down reading, we are in for a thrill ride of the ages. Once you start, it is nearly impossible to stop reading it, and expect some sleep-deprived nights along the way.
Part of what makes Scott Bartlett's world-building so good, and his characters and situations so real, is his depth and breadth of understanding of people, real people, their motivations, and the politics that drive human societies.
This is an anthology like no other from Scott. At last, the entire Spacers together in one place makes this book a must-read. IYKYK - If You Know, You Know.
I have been following Scott Bartlett and his writing for nearly a decade now, and I have always delighted in his writing, characters, and audiobooks. I have always savored the experience, long after the price is forgotten, and I always will. Scott is one of those eternal writers who never grows old, and whose writing I come back to without surcease.
One gets military scifi action and then you get absolutely riveting military scifi action that grab your attention and leave you gasping for breath once you finished the book. Spacers: First Command falls squarely into the latter category what with a character like Thatcher in command of the light cruiser New Jersey. Very much underrated and determined to succeed, Jackson is a tactical genius about to be unleashed on the Dawn Cluster under threat of pirates, an insect like alien species and even an unscrupulous rival corporate CEO determined to take over and ravage the rich and lucrative Dawn Cluster, some thousands of light-years away from Earth. The action is scintillating and the plot a devious one vacillating constantly between total ruin and victory. This entire series bundled in a single box set promises to be hot property. I Loved every single moment. Enjoy.
I like both the overall story arc and the plot of these books. I thought universe building the author did was good. The interplay between the various military arms of the corporations is interesting. The books move at a good pace and keeps you motivated to keep reading. Thatcher is faced with dissension in the fleet and better tactics by the fleets of the main antagonist. As well, his former employer has apparently aligned with a fleet of questionable morals. If you like Military Science fiction at the fleet level, you should have a look this series.
While this series wasn't in my wheelhose, there’s plenty here to appreciate. I loved the excellent narration and the fascinating mystery surrounding the Xanthic. I also appreciated that the author isn’t afraid to raise the stakes by killing off characters.
The human political intrigue felt a bit overwhelming... If you are a would war history buff or love political thrillers, you will likely really enjoy this—it just wasn't quite my style. Still, a very well-executed series for the right reader!

Having enjoyed read the first couple books of this series of books. I was very happy when Scott bundles the rest of the series into a 10 pack. I fully recommend this series, and just so you know it is also available in audible as well. So if you like to both read and listen go for it.
Great development of places, things and people. Kept my interest though out the serirs. A master painter of words..the only flaw is being the master of repetition. Just got word count and deadlines? Would be better to add more depth....
