“In the ashes of broken hearts, something wild still burns.” 1890. Two women. Two pasts. One desert that refuses to let either of them go.
Told in dual POV, When Embers Find Her, follows both Charlotte’s desperate search for freedom and Sawyer’s struggle with the past she thought she’d buried. As Charlotte discovers her own strength in the ashes of who she used to be, Sawyer fights to return to the woman she never meant to leave behind. When their paths collide again, it’s not just love waiting to ignite— it’s the reckoning.
Charlotte Charlotte Grace Windsor has spent her whole life being told what she should be. Obedient, quiet, soft. Afterall, soft women bruise easier under a man’s thumb. But after surviving years of cruelty, starvation, and the slow suffocation of being owned by men, Charlotte finds herself standing on the edge of her own ending, ready to let the desert swallow her whole. Until Sawyer Hayes finds her and crashes into her life like a lightning strike.
Sawyer Hayes, a woman forged in solitude and strength, pulls Charlotte from the claws of death and shows her a world where a woman chooses her fate. With a heart she pretends is long dead, Sawyer becomes the first person to see Charlotte as more than fragile. More than a victim. Sawyer has no business rescuing anybody, but the desert knows fire when it sees it. And something in Charlotte burns.
But just when Charlotte begins to believe in that fire, Sawyer disappears, leaving nothing but a note behind. Left alone again, Charlotte is forced to face the darkest parts of the frontier, of the cruelty of others, and of her own mind. And she’s not prepared for what the truth will cost—or what it will reignite. Because when embers find each other, they don’t settle. They burn.

Lynn Creeke is a sapphic author from the Midwest who writes emotionally charged love stories and poetry centered on resilience, longing, and the transformative power of connection. Writing under L. Creeke, she is drawn to complex characters and relationships that linger long after the final page.
In her free time, Lynn can be found reading, spending time with her wife and daughter, and working as a youth social worker.
One element that sets this old Western apart is the author’s brutalist prose. I understand the intent on rendering the culture and daily life of the era as faithfully as possible.
The finest aspect of the novel, in my view, was the development of one of its central characters. The cumulative force of life-altering moments was earned and by the end, the woman she became was not merely convincing, but inevitable.

💬 LINES THAT LIVE RENT-FREE “The only thing I regret is not fuckin’ killin’ him right there, Lottie. I’d do it twice over, no qualms,” her voice was serious, steady. “And that ain’t no spat. He was hurtin’ you. Chokin’ the air from you. Love shouldn’t hurt.” - Sawyer
“Lottie, truth is, I’d walk through hell barefoot if it meant seein’ you safe.” I blinked at her, the words sinking deep. “But why me?” Her answer came without pause. “’Cause you deserve it. You’re the good, Lot. All there is to it.” “You’re the good too, Sawyer,”
“But make no mistake, you piece of shit. I may not possess her, but I do protect her. And I will fuckin’ kill anyone foolish enough to consider touchin’ her again.”
🖤 WHY THIS STORY HIT ME SO HARD This book absolutely wrecked me, in the best way. One of my favorite dark and angsty reads, and an emotional ride I am not recovering from anytime soon. The writing is so vivid, so immersive, I didn’t feel like I was reading this story, I felt like I was in it. Every bit of pain, every moment of emotion, I felt it. I was so emotional reading it. But be warned, this is not an easy read. Please read the trigger warnings and take them seriously. The author does not hold back, and what these women go through is heavy. It hurts. It’s meant to. But the healing, the resilience, and the love that comes from it? Completely worth it.
🫀CHARACTER THOUGHTS Sawyer completely owned me. She’s magnetic, fiercely independent, and more than happy to be on her own until Charlotte changes everything. And when she falls. It’s intense, protective, all-consuming. I kept thinking, what would it feel like to be loved like this? She is everything you want in a lead. Charlotte shattered me. She endures so much, and still finds a way to rise. Watching her fight for herself, no matter the cost, was devastating and beautiful.
🔥 MOMENTS I’M STILL THINKING ABOUT I truly don’t think there’s a single moment I won’t be thinking about. This story got under my skin and has stayed there. The emotions, the intensity, the quiet and loud moments all of it stuck with me.
⚠️ ONE SMALL NOTE Read. The. Warnings. And if you can handle it? Don’t wait pick this up immediately.
📚 READ THIS IF YOU LOVE… Sapphic historical westerns with epic, hard-earned love. Two women who have seen the worst of life and still choose to fight. Stories that break you into pieces and then carefully, painfully put you back together. And the most intense touch her and die energy.
I absolutely adored this book. It wasnt an easy read to be sure. These women go through hell and more, but they fight they out up for each other and their freedom made the journey so worth it. I'm so looking forward to another book with these characters, hopefully finally finding that fabled town of peace and happiness and acceptance.
L. Creeke will have you hooked, definitely check this one out.
I love this book. It was really sad in the beginning of the abuse and well, but you know what it was bearable for me and I really really enjoyed the love story between these two beautiful women. The sex scenes were really spicy.
What a wonderful debut from L. Creeke! Beautiful characters, good plot and look into that time. A lot of loose ends to tie up. Can’t wait till the second comes out!
Let’s just say, I was skeptical because I am more into thriller/mystery novels….but this book was the first book where I actually felt like I was in the story myself, in that time period. I love how the author goes into detail about the characters’s lives past and present. It really makes you feel like you know the characters on a personal level. This book gives you all the emotions let me tell you. I finished the book in a matter of days. I truly hope the author makes a second one because I got attached to the characters like they were family! If that makes any sense at all. 1000/10 recommend to everyone.
