A chance encounter in a flea market parking lot and a severed finger embroil two Vietnamese German siblings ― and a vividly drawn cast of eccentric neighbors, a tough teen biker with a crush, a rollerblading girl gang, and many others ― on a mission to save a desperate young Vietnamese woman from her pursuer.
Two German siblings, 12-year-old Tâm and 14-year-old Dennis Nguyen, encounter a young Vietnamese woman in trouble in a flea market parking lot. When Tâm’s spy movie-obsessed schoolmate, Alex, discovers an abandoned backpack with a photo of a happy couple with Tâm’s address on the back, it will lead the two to discover a severed finger. Worried, Tâm searches for the desperate woman, aided by her reluctant brother, and eventually finds Hoa Bin, who escaped from her kidnapper ― who’s still tracking her down. Drawn to Hoa Bin, Tâm vows to save her ― even if she has to break her stern-but-loving mom’s rules, dodge the bad guys in wild chases through the Berlin streets, and combine the forces of Marina, the Nguyens’ tough-chick neighbor, Jutta, an elderly retired actress, a rollerblading girl gang, and many others to do so. In Ross’s empathetic, loose-but-controlled lines, cartoonishly expressive kids interact against and within the realistically depicted urban environments, given texture and grit by screen-tones. Nirvana is Here is a contemporary crime thriller that has kid-detective, adventure, diasporic, coming-of-age, and love story elements, set in Berlin’s working-class Lichtenberg district against a backdrop of very current social issues.

I almost DNFed this one in the beginning, but I'm glad I stuck with it! I'm not even sure what I was expecting going in, but it certainly wasn't this.
There were some genuinely funny moments, especially between Tâm and Dennis. Their sibling dynamic was one of my favorite parts because they could be arguing one minute and dealing with something much more serious the next. The story has a rough, sometimes brutal side to it, too, which caught me off guard.
At its heart, this is a story about Tâm and her brother helping Hoa, a woman who has escaped human trafficking. There's a lot more going on beneath the surface than I expected, and I ended up getting more invested as the story went on.
My biggest complaint was the ending. Just when things were getting interesting, the story suddenly stopped. It didn't even feel like a proper cliffhanger. I was just left wondering if that was really it.
Even with that frustration, I'm glad I kept reading. I'd continue the story because now I need to know how everything turns out!

Teda skoro.
Przeszkadzały mi jedynie przesadzone i nierealne sceny pościgów.
Absolutamente recomendable.
Thanks Netgalley and publisher for this free book.
I did try to follow the book but it just lost me. I felt there was not much introductions to the characters like you don’t get into them very deeply as you should. It’s such a pity cause the art looked pretty decent!
I będzie dowiezione obojgu.
No i jest brutalnie (dość). Mamy tu szwendające się samotnie dzieciaki, wietnamskie rodzeństwo, w którym ona to taka empatyczna "Hermiona", a on lekko ciapowaty satanista, fan Slayera i ogólnie metalu (oh, yeah!). I łyżworolgirlsy!
No i oczywiście mnóstwo akcji, pościgów, niebezpieczeństwa i trochę mordobicia.
Love, love!

Má to dostatočne pekné ilustrácie a príbeh pôsobí živo. Akoby ste sledovali film. Odporúčam.
Octobre 2025.
A chytí ji ta druhá?
Přestože styl kresby připomíná občas i americké cartoons (jednoduchá stylizace, noodle arms, zveličené emoce ve tváři), tenhle komiks nabízí poměrně přízemní, realistický náhled do světa. Všechny postavy jsou lidi, co mají vlastní zkušenosti a názory a fakt ty jejich interakce fungujou. Sice nevím, jak dlouho se mnou zůstane samotnej příběh, kde se za 340 stran zas tolik „nestalo“, ale jako temnější slice of life s dobrou atmosférou se mi to líbilo.

The ARC is only the first 200 pages. I definitely want to read the rest!
I enjoyed the art. Nothing too flashy with some fun flourishes. An effective use of variety in black and white illustrations.
It gave me the vibes of an 80s/90s movie that they don't really make anymore. A chance encounter that ripples through a group of people in a neighborhood. A mix of comedy and action surrounding a darker narrative thread. Each character is the hero in their own story which just happens to intersect with the others. Every character you spend time with could have their own standalone story.
A quick paced and well executed crime thriller! The cast is populated with believable and enjoyable characters with distinct and unique voices. Ross knows how to write teens that sound like teens instead of parodies of themselves and adults that are complex and compelling. The action and imagery work very well for the story being told and I thoroughly enjoyed this read. Will definitely purchase it for my library collection when it debuts. If you enjoy Rucka or Brubaker crime stories, you'll be half with this.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me a free ARC for Nirvana is Here.
Thank you to NetGalley and Fantagraphics Books for a digital copy of this Graphic Novel in exchange for my review!
This was a fun and exciting read! It took me a little while to get into it, but once I did, I was hooked. This graphic novel is not in color, and while I wish it was, I still enjoyed the art and was able to follow the story for the most part.
The plot follows several different characters in a city with problems as minor as rejecting their crush at school to as major as escaping sex trafficking. It was pretty suspenseful and I was eagerly turning the pages. I became quite connected to the characters and I wish that I could have spent a little more time with them!
I think this one just wasn't for me. I usually can read graphic novels pretty quickly, but this one took me a couple weeks just because I didn't feel particularly engaging in the story or drawn in by the illustrations. I so appreciate the opportunity to read, though, and I would give the author another shot in the future!

Sehr spannendes Buch.
