About the author

Violet Mary Firth Evans (better known as Dion Fortune), was a British occultist and author. Her pseudonym was inspired by her family motto "Deo, non fortuna" (Latin for "by God, not fate").

From 1919 she began writing a number of novels and short stories that explored various aspects of magic and mysticism, including The Demon Lover, The Winged Bull, The Goat-Foot God, and The Secrets of Dr. Taverner. This latter is a collection of short stories based on her experiences with Theodore Moriarty. Two of her novels, The Sea Priestess and Moon Magic, became influential within the religion of Wicca, especially upon Doreen Valiente.

Of her non-fiction works on magical subjects, the best remembered of her books are; The Cosmic Doctrine, meant to be a summation of her basic teachings on mysticism; The Mystical Qabalah, an introduction to Hermetic Qabalah; and Psychic Self Defence, a manual on how to protect oneself from psychic attacks. Though some of her writings may seem dated to contemporary readers, they have the virtue of lucidity and avoid the deliberate obscurity that characterised many of her forerunners and contemporaries.

Oldies but goodies. Dion Fortune has always become a foolproof author for those who are relatively at their early stages in occultism. This book also proves to be a valuable brief summary of practical key points to consider before taking any action in the inner planes (etheric, astral, mental, etc.) through using such methods and practices as meditation, dreams, divination, or magical rituals. Dion Fortune's book includes an insight and warning about the powers to deal with or to be invoked or evoked through such rituals based on her immense personal experience in the field.

This was an excellent read full of practical applications and concise explanations that may benefit both the beginner to the more studious occult reader. This is the third book I’ve read by Dion Fortune and I really applaud her style and am tremendously thankful to her honesty. Many books of similar topics attempt to herd the readers into their particular school or esoteric group. Some may find value in working with others however there are the solo mystics out there who are either too isolated or too introverted to seek out a guru and this book not only helps one grab hold of the bottom rung of the ladder but to also start climbing a few steps.

But she doesn’t leave you hanging at the end! Instead Dion Fortune devotes an entire chapter to further readings and recommendations by other authors who’s books have helped her!!! This is rarely seen by occult leaders as they tend to shove more of their own books at you or try and get you to subscribe to their newsletters or mail ordered curriculum...

I’m very pleased to have this copy on my shelf and found it a refreshing read which expounded on many concepts I thought I had a pretty solid foundation on.
