“Canada in War-Paint” was a series of vignettes about the Great War rather than a traditional memoir. However, these reminiscences really show a personal and heartfelt view of the war experience for the Tommies. “Home,” which showed soldiers doing their best to push aside or numb yearnings for home to often superstitious levels, was a particular standout for me.
This was easily one of my favorite books from the war. Captain Bell truly did a marvelous job of capturing the essence of the resolute human spirit in the face of the sheer horror of war.
