"Soul-Binding. Just the name is a blade pressed to the throat. It diminishes boundaries, erases the walls you build around yourself, and drags you screaming into someone else’s soul."
Twenty-three-year-old Elysia Morningstar, a High Mage of Celestria, is condemned to an impossible choice—bind or die.
To save her kingdom from the spreading plague and the border war, Elysia is forced into an irreversible soulbond with Kaden Reinheart, an enigmatic warrior mage. Feared for his brutality and marked by scars earned on the front lines, Kaden is a living weapon, and now the other half of her soul.
Bound in magic, mind, and soul, they are sent to the Concordium, a soul binding academy where pairs are trained to wield their shared power and sharpened for war. Bonds are tested, limits are broken, and weakness is a death sentence.
Every lesson drags Elysia and Kaden deeper into each other’s thoughts, emotions and desires, leaving no room for lies… or resistance.
As shadows stir and Elysia fights to find the source of the plague, she finds herself and Kaden at the heart of a conspiracy that threatens to tear Celestria apart from within.
Together, they may be Celestria’s last hope.
Or the force that brings it to ruin.
A war torn kingdom. A fated bond. Survival is the only option.

If you like fourth wing or bonds of hercules you will love this! The world building and descriptions are amazing! It has twisted I was not expecting. Can't wait for the next book!
Tired of weak-boned MFCs? Then this should be in your TBR and ASAP 💖📚
This book is for readers who love: •Intense soulbond dynamics •Strong heroines •Shadow daddy MMCs •Found family that actually feels relatable •High stakes, war action, and spice that hits
I had the absolute privilege of reading Bonds of Fate as an ARC reader, and I am not exaggerating when I say this book completely CONSUMED ME!
The concept of soul-binding feels so sharp and intimate, not romanticized fluff, but something raw, invasive, powerful! The idea that your walls can be stripped away and your soul laid bare? Obsessed✨️
🌙Elysia Morningstar is everything I want in a main female character. She’s strong, capable, and fiercely determined but she’s also soft in the most beautiful ways. Her love for flowers, her quiet rose tea moments, the way she carries the weightof a kingdom. She knows who she is. She knows what she wants, she has the power to go after it...AND SHE DOES! 👀
The friendships in this book deserve their own standing ovation. The relationships Elysia forms feel real, layered, and earned. I wasn’t just reading about them, I was rooting for them all! Every interaction added depth, warmth, and authenticity to the story. By the end, I genuinely felt like these characters are my friends!🥹
And then there’s Kaden Reinheart🫦 Quiet. Scarred. Lethal. The ultimate shadow daddy warrior who has never been truly in love… until he layed eyes on our beautiful Elysia. The slow unraveling of him? The emotional intimacy forced by the soulbond? The tension? The SPICE?...had me giggling and kicking my feet 🙈Elite!🌶🌶🌶 He’s protective and strong with that hint of jealousy that's sooo sexy. The way he's pushing her buttons and she cannot help herself but react...oh, just chef’s kiss 🤌🏻
The action is relentless, the magic system feels purposeful, and the academy setting adds that addictive training-for-war tension where weakness isn’t an option. The monsters the lurk beyond the border. The political conspiracy layered beneath the romance kept the stakes high the entire time!
Oh my days, this book is fantastic! I was lucky enough to be issued with an Advanced Reader Copy from the author and I'm so glad.
I absolutely love the main characters, Elysia and Kaden. The book is predominantly told from Elysia's POV but with frequent chapters from Kaden's viewpoint.
The FMC and MMC are fiery and tempestuous, strong willed and loyal. Once they reach that point in their journey, the spice is completely delicious.
The side characters and the friendships that develop are also worth mention, as the banter and warmth between them had me feeling the whole range of emotions.
The first couple of chapters of world building are noticably heavy with sensory detail, the lights, the sounds, the smells and I think if this had continued in such detail throughout, I would have struggled. Not an issue though as the plot then ramps up and the action begins.
The last quarter of this book ruined me in the best way and I will be (politely) demanding book two as soon as is physically possible.
All in all, this is genuinely one of the best romantasy books that I've read and I'm really excited to get a hard copy for my bookshelf. Love it, love it, love it!
This book was amazing! I love all the characters, the details were amazing! If your looking for something after reading Fourth Wing then id try this one. It has some quotes from the series that might help you with the book hangover 😊. Its a slow burn Romance, with war, an has soul binding! Definitely a good read.
This book was really special. The characters are compelling and the banter was strong throughout. I read a lot of fantasy romance, so certain plot points were not a surprise, but that’s not a bad thing. The characters themselves made the book special and the found family is heart warming.
The only reason I didn’t give this book a 5 star rating is because the pacing sometimes felt a little stark, and maybe it’s just my preferences because I tend to find 600-700 pages to be the perfect amount to fully flesh out and pace a book with this many characters and such a rich world with so much lore. It felt like we got tastes of the characters’ friendships and relationships building, but not the full story to warrant the depth of feeling between each of them. The lore of this book especially is interesting and I can’t believe I’m saying this but I would have enjoyed a bit more world building and I never think that, but truly that’s just a small preference.
In terms of the main love interests, the FMC and MMC have great chemistry and I believe their love. It’s clear how deeply they care about each other, and it’s nice to see the MMC so certain. Despite that, it was sometimes tough to watch the FMC react in denial to every hard truth or emotionally complex situation. She was so understanding to everyone except the MMC for half the book and it didn’t totally make sense for them to be full blown enemies. It would have been nice to see them get to know one another a bit more in conversation bc just with time.
Also, apparently the FMC’s dad killed the MMC’s mom but it’s just mentioned once with no clarity on what happened. Another small inconsistency is that I thought if your soul bond dies, then you also die. It might have been explained but it’s said so many times that I’m confused bc the FMC’s dad didn’t die when her mom died. And then another character’s soul bond died and they didn’t die either.
All in all, this book made me feel something, like had me tearing up and that always pushes up a books rating for me because ultimately that’s what I love about reading.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
There’s not enough words to describe how beautiful this book is. The writing, the plot, all the characters… absolutely stunning, loved every single word and can’t wait for the second book.
PS The amount of tears my eyes produced should be studied.
I’ve had the lucky opportunity to get the Advanced Reader Copy! And I must say, this book ate!!! For fans of Fourth Wing, if you haven’t moved on from that book, please dooooo and get started on this!!! I can’t wait for the next!!! ❤️❤️❤️
But ARE we good? Because honestly this book kept me in a chokehold the entire time I was reading it. I took my time exploring every detail the author gave in the story. The way she described the scenery was truly breathtaking. I found myself wanting to evaporate and reappear in this beautiful world Celestria.
What to expect?
☆ soulbond ☆ found family ☆ strong FMC ☆ beautiful worldbuilding
I found myself liking the side characters and eating up all the interactions there were. I LOVE a good found family book and this one perfectly hit the mark for me. It gave me this cozy fuzzy feeling and I need more!
This story had a good portion of action and I was on the edge of my seat everytime. The magic system was also good to follow, nothing too difficult.
The relationship between Elysia and Kaden developed beautifully. Although I'm a slowburn girly myself and would've loved the relationship to have been a bit slower, I still think they are the perfect fit and it just clicks. She's feisty and he keeps to himself but definitely takes no shit from anyone. I loved following their love story ♡
And can we talk about the ending because what the actual hell??? Miss Goodwin we need that sequel like yesterday! I need more, I want to find out what happens next. So many questions!
Bonds of Fate completely pulled me in. It’s emotional, magical, and full of tension in the best way.
What I loved most was how deeply everything is felt. The bond between Elysia and Kaden isn’t just romantic — it’s intense, messy, powerful, and sometimes heartbreaking. The grief scenes genuinely hurt to read, which just shows how attached I became to the characters. The magic system is really immersive too, especially the idea of soul-binding and intertwined bloodlines.
Elysia is strong without feeling cold, and I appreciated that she makes difficult choices. The side characters added a lot of heart to the story as well.
If I had to say one thing, it would be that the middle slows slightly in places, and I’d have loved a little more insight into the politics of the Council. But the ending absolutely makes up for it — that cliffhanger was painful in the best way.
Overall, this felt dramatic, romantic, and full of emotion. I’ll definitely be continuing the series.
Was very excited to received an advanced reader copy of this book. It pulled me in the from the very beginning and was an enjoyable read. I will say there were some parts (1 or 2 scenes) that seemed very reminiscent to some popular romantasy books out there, but other than those parts the book was an original idea and exciting to read. I am looking forward to the next part in Kaden and Elysias story!!
What a beautiful debut novel. I really enjoyed it 🖤 so much so I have bought a physical copy as it’s deserves a place on my bookshelf. Cant wait for the next instalment.
This review is spoiler free, BUT I will be quoting some of my favourite bits of dialogue.
I was incredibly lucky (and honoured) to receive the ARC for Bonds of Fate and AHHHHHHH!! This book is my ROMAN EMPIRE, it had me in a chokehold from the very first sentence. "The pyres burn hottest before dusk." EXCUSE ME?! I'M SAT!! This book absolutely consumed me and took over my life, I read it within a day and have read it at least four times since. It's soul shattering in the most beautiful of ways.
I have so much to say, so buckle your seatbelts bookworms, because you're going to be here for a while!
FIRSTLY, I'd like to give a huge standing ovation to M.B.Goodwin, you write beautifully, your characters feel real and developed, your world building is immaculate and every chapter added depth to either the plot or the character relationships. Not once did I get bored, or skim or skip chapters, I was enthralled from the get go. In my personal opinion, this book is at the same level as the elites, and for a debut that's incredible! I've been in a book slump since reading it because honestly nothing has come close to giving me the immersive feeling your book did. I honestly hope you get so much recognition from this book and the series become as big as S.J.M, Rebecca Yarros, Holly Black... just to name a few.
Now onto the actual book! What should you expect? - Soulbond -Strong FMC -Banter (lots of it.) -Found family -Forced proximity -Beautiful world building -Emotional turmoil (in the best way.)
From the very first chapter I was in a chokehold and leaning forward like a creep. The worldbuilding descriptions were fucking gorgeous. M.B.Goodwin has this knack for lush, sensory detail that never tips over into purple. The luminescent plants, the spice in the air, the moonlight on Elysia's dagger (Which by the way, the dagger description itself is sexy as hell. I want one).
Elysia's also shines through instantly from just the first few paragraphs. She feels dangerous, powerful, competent and strongly defiant, yet she is also terrified of being useless when it matters most. Then there is Cole... ugh I can't even begin to tell you how much I LOVE him. He's that childhood best friend everyone needs and deserves. Cole is cocky, loyal, and uses humour like armour. I already loved him from his "You keep watching the dead burn, you're start smelling like them." Cole and Elysia banter like people who've been roasting each other since they could talk. It’s warm, sharp, and lived-in. I can hear every line in my head, the “generous lover” and "A devilishly handsome stray cat" exchange actually made me snort. Their relationship is one of the most authentic and gorgeously platonic friendships I’ve read in ages.
Elysia is summoned by the Council at the end of chapter one to soulbind and the letter she receives really starts to drag you into the plot and instantly makes you hate the council, the summons itself is a gut-punch, "You will yield your will to the Rite. You will bind, for the sake of every soul that breathes within our realm" and "Know this, Elysia Morningstar, refusal will not be tolerated. Defiance will be treated as treason, punishable by execution." had me wanting to throw my phone across the room and scream "You absolute bastards!" It was perfectly executed and opens to the build up of the actual ceremony where we finally meet the rumoured Kaden Reinheart... and let me tell you HE IS EVERTHING.
His "It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Elysia darling" while kissing the back of her hand?! I FOLDED THERE AND THEN. Kaden immediately gives terrifying, calculated menace wrapped in charm, and by this point you only have three lines from him. I was scared and attracted and furious about it all in the same breath. And the hatred that sparks between Elysia and Kaden is so delicious you could bottle it. That single hand kiss and verbal spar had more chemistry than most books have in 300 pages.
ALSO, KADEN IS AN ARTIST! sign me the fuck up!! You so rarely get MMC's with actual hobbies and a genuine personality aside from the "dark, moody, doesn't like anyone but her" type, and it is SO refreshing. He's closed off, scarred and absolutely lethal but also loves so deeply, indulges in other people's interests just to make them happy, and uses drawing as a way to stay connected to his mum. One part of me is terrified of him, and the other part wants to wrap him up in a blanket and keep him safe from the hands of The Council.
Kaden and Elysia's relationship develops beautifully over the course of the book, and the soulbond dynamic really adds that beautiful layer of emotional intimacy you otherwise wouldn't get. The slow unravelling of them, and Kaden in particular is deliciously torturous, and when they do FINALLY get down and dirty, the spice itself is heart racing. I swear the first time they were truly intimate I damn near had to take a cold shower after. AND THE WISTERIA SCENE?! I was leaning forward the whole time with my breath caught in my throat.
Now onto the side characters... oh how every single one of them has my heart. There isn't a single character in this book that felt like a useless, irritating filler. Every single one has purpose and every single one has their own personality. They all feel so real and by the end of it, I genuinely felt like they were my friends, and I HATED leaving them. (Half the reason I have re read this 4 times already.) Thane and Sirena have the kind of childhood sweetheart love everyone dreams off, and they are both so extremely loyal, not just to each other but to their friends, and especially Kaden. Brynn and Ronan are like Elysia and Cole 2.0, and Ronan's charm should honestly be studied. Enzo and Odette are the nosey, mischievous duo that never failed to make me laugh. Enzo's "What? I'm open minded. A bit of shadow action never hurt no one." had me spitting out my coffee and nearly choking.
The action throughout the entire book is relentless, the magic system is simple to understand and feels purposeful, and the academy setting adds that addictive training-for-war tension where weakness isn’t an option and death is a very real possibility. The monsters that lurk beyond the border are honestly nightmare fuel and the political conspiracy layered beneath the romance kept the stakes high the entire time!
The last quarter of this book had me crying and using up tissues like they were going out of fashion. AND THAT ENDING! Oh my... a huge round of applause. It's a perfectly crafted ending which leaves you with the right amount of questions and anticipation. M.B.Goodwin has done an amazing job leaving the ending in a way that doesn’t have you shouting , stomping or throwing the book across the room... but does leave you needing book 2 in hand immediately.
I would STRONGLY recommend to my fellow fantasy and romantasy readers. Particularly those who love fourth wing, TOG, ACOTAR and Quicksilver. Honestly... and I don't say this lightly, I truly believe this book tops all of them (Personal opinion, of course.)
Now, I'm going to have to politely demand that M.B.Goodwin brings out book 2 as soon as is physically possible before I wither away into a ball of pure angst and anticipation. Bonds of Fate will forever be in my heart, I loved the writing, I was enamoured by the world, I ADORED the characters and I am so consumed by Elysia and Kaden's story, they are BY FAR my favourite book couple and I can't wait to see what else their story brings. <3
I found the overall storyline kept me hooked and piqued my interest, I was so invested in the story and was looking forward to what was coming next, I wanted to scream and shout at times but never once did I want to skip pages I was engrossed within the story that much I even reread pages to make sure I didn’t miss anything.
I loved most of the characters, felt frustration for some of them and frustrated at some of them, hell I didn’t particularly like all of them, I got why they were in the story, I could have done with a little less of them but they all had purpose. However, I love the lead characters, strong minded and strong willed, I usually prefer the leads but unintentionally it was Serena who has my heart, the fierce loyalty, the strength she had was something that hit home with. She is the perfect best friend that everyone should have, her character just screams out, well she did for me.
Well what a way to end the book…I wanted to choose 1 word to explain how I felt but to understand this you’ll need to read the book, devastated. This word has a variety of reasons but I aren’t one for giving spoilers so read the book. I am beyond eager to get my hands on book 2, yes I know book 1 hasn’t released yet, call me greedy. What I will says is that its a perfectly crafted ending which leaves you with the right amount of questions and the right amount of angst against the author, she has done amazing to leave the ending in a way which doesn’t have you shouting and stomping but you do need to have book 2 to hand.
Would I recommend this book? Is there a good storyline? Is there friction, angst and romance? Does the author make you fade away from reality?
Simply yes.
What this author created was something so magical that I felt that I was there living through the ups the downs with each character, the only spoiler I will give is have a pack of tissues to hand, for both the laughter and the sadness. I am rooting for this book and this author.
This book completely pulled me in and didn’t let go!!
One of the most compelling parts of the story is the soulbond between Elysia and Kaden. The bond creates this constant, simmering tension because they’re forced into a level of emotional intimacy they never would have chosen, and when they are enemies that tension has you on the edge of your seat! Their thoughts, emotions, and magic bleed into each other in a way that makes every moment feel heightened. It adds such a unique layer to the usual enemies to lovers trope, and the push and pull between resistance and vulnerability was so addictive to read.
Every character felt like their own fully fleshed out person rather than just supporting the main plot, no filler characters in sight! The relationships felt authentic and meaningful too, which scratched that found family itch.
And Kaden… he is ABSOLUTELY the next book boyfriend. He’s powerful and intimidating when he needs to be, but underneath that he’s soft, thoughtful, and deeply caring. He carries that broody intensity, yet when it comes to the people he loves, he loves fiercely and completely. Honourable mention as well... he’s an artist, which adds such a beautiful dimension to his character that I've never read before.
The writing itself is stunning. The prose flows beautifully without ever slowing the story down. The worldbuilding and magic system are also incredibly well thought out and detailed that I swear I got transported to the beautiful world of Celestria!
All in all, a five star read. So soooo happy I came across this on tiktok, absolutely booktok worthy! I CAN'T WAIT for the next book.
Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome to the stage my newest fictional obsession: Kaden, the brooding shadow daddy.
I’m not exaggerating when I say this book delivered a brand new book boyfriend for me. Kaden is the kind of tortured, intense hero who doesn’t just fall, he falls hard for Elysia, and watching that unfold was everything. His broody exterior paired with the depth of his inner battle of his attraction for her made him impossible not to love.
And Elysia? She absolutely holds her own. I loved how strong and self assured she was. She never faded into the typical soft or weak FMC. She oozed independence and had not only the attitude, but the willpower to back it up. Their dynamic had just the right balance of tension, chemistry, banter and pettiness to keep me invested from start to finish.
This book had everything I was craving, especially coming out of a bit of a Rebecca Yarros slump. The characters each felt thoughtfully crafted, with distinct personalities that made them stand out. The worldbuilding was immersive, and the descriptions of the creatures and settings were so vivid that I could practically see the scenes playing out like a movie in my head.
I truly couldn’t put this one down, I devoured it. I’m already excited to see what’s next for this feisty couple and how they’ll navigate the inevitable obstacles ahead. If you love brooding heroes, fierce heroines, and a romance that burns with intensity, this one absolutely deserves a spot on your TBR.
If I had one word to describe this story, it would be: WOW.
The author does a great job of vividly building the world of Celestria, and the characters pull you in even when they frustrate you at times (and they will 😂).
I absolutely loved that Elysia is such a strong, powerful FMC, and an overall badass! She is smart, a fighter and protects the people she loves fiercely. The friendships and character dynamics were another highlight for me. They have great banter, the relationships feel genuine, and there are so many moments that make you smile.
And Elysia and Kaden? If you love enemies-to-lovers, you’re in for a treat. The tension, witty back-and-forth, and jealousy are all chef’s kiss. Their chemistry adds so much depth and excitement to the story.
Don't even get me started on the twists and turns in the plot and the cliffhanger at the end! It will definitely leave you shocked and impatient for the next book (guilty lol).
The only reason this isn’t a full 5 stars for me is that some of the similarities to Fourth Wing and some other stories felt a bit too noticeable at times. I completely understand that fantasy often shares common tropes, but a few specific scenes and phrases felt almost too similar. What makes this story shine is its unique spin on widely used tropes and its original worldbuilding, rather than the parallel phrases and scenes that occasionally pulled me out of the story.
I truly can't wait for the next book and to see how Goodwin continues to build this magical world of Celestria!
Oh. My. Stars ✨ Elysia Morningstar is a queen in every sense of the word. Tough, smart, unapologetic… and somehow also totally swoon-worthy with her soft, quiet moments. She’s the kind of heroine who makes you want to stand up and cheer while clutching your tea. 👑💖
And the friendships? Legendary. Funny, messy, loyal, and so real that I felt like I was hanging out with these characters myself. Every laugh, every heart-to-heart, every argument… it hits. Hard.
Enters Kaden Reinheart 😅 broody, lethal, and apparently incapable of ignoring Elysia. The slow burn? The soulbond? The tension? I was literally giggling and swooning at the same time. Protective, possessive, and absolutely irresistible… he’s that “ugh, yes” kind of love interest you can’t get enough of. 🔥
This book is a five-star mood, full stop. It’s fierce, fun, spicy, and completely addictive. Do yourself a favor: drop what you’re doing and read it. You’ll thank me later. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ It’s been an honour being an Arc reader for Millie Goodwin, I can’t wait for more of her reads. After suffering ill health, this book gave me genuinely gave me something to feel excited about and keep the background noise quiet during my treatment and recovery.
This book had me captured with hook, line and sinker from the first few pages! I wasn’t able to put the book down once I started it, and I finished reading the whole thing in less than 14 hours (no sleep for the wicked)!
The way you get dragged into the universe that the author has created on these pages is just incredible. I felt like I was walking beside the characters and living their story along with them. While reading this book for the first time (have read it about 4 times now) my brother came to ask if I was doing OK as I went through the whole range of emotions in a matter of minutes!
I would strongly recommend this book to fellow fantasy lovers, you will not be disappointed! I can’t wait for the next book in this series to come out so I can follow the story further, and fall even more in love with the universe and characters the author has created for us!
A HUGE thank you to M.B. Goodwin for allowing me to be one of your ARC-readers, and for giving us this amazing story!
This book made me want more and more and it gave exactly that! The world and characters feel like home, like something warm and familiar.
Sometimes when it comes to side characters it can feel very two dimensional but Cole, Sirena ,Thane and the rest were so fleshed out I grew to love them just as much as the main characters. As Elysias and Kadens story’s being told so are theirs and It just added to that sense of family and the bonds they all have with each other, something unbreakable.
The ending is HAUNTING me but in the best way possible!
Forever grateful to the Author for giving me the chance to ARC read this 🥹🫶🏻
If you love a stabby FMC and a slightly unhinged MMC you’ll love this 😏
I was lucky enough to get an ARC from the author and this book was so amazing!! the plot, the banter everything about this book was what i want in a romantasy!!! I could not put it down I read it in 2 days!!! I LOVE OUR FMC SHE IS A BADASS!!! I was hooked by chapter 2 and could not put it down!! if you love fourth wing, a book of azarael then this book is right up your alley!! it was such a refreshing plot and characters in my opinion bc often times in romantasy i feel like the books are always the same but this was absolutely amazing and unique!! I CANT WAIT FOR THE RELEASE SO I CAN HAVE THE PHYSICAL BOOK AND READ THOS AGAIN!!!
I absolutely loved it. The storyline is just amazing and I didn’t see the plottwist coming at all. I love the worldbuilding and how the magic system works. Elysia is such an amazing and strong women. I loved reading about a FMC who always stays true to herself even after she is bound to Kaden. I also loved getting to know Kaden. He’s such a complicated character and the more you get to know him the more you start loving him. I loved getting to know the side characters and seeing their friendships form. And I’m already super exited for the next book.
If you like the fourth wings, acotar, tog, hungergames vibe I really recommend this book, The enemy to love, proximity force, found Family, A badass heroine a shadow daddy, a perfect mix of Aelin x Xaden
Breathtaking scenes, tears of the plot, reversals
I can't wait to have the sequel because I assure you that we can't resist the sequel after this majestic ending✨
As a first time author I’m impressed. The Author’s descriptions are captivating and you can’t help but love the witty banter she’s created amongst her characters. I can’t wait to see what else unfolds in Celestria. It draws similarities to popular books like Fourth Wing. Can’t wait to see this author grow into her style and story telling. Booktok worthy.
