Travel agent by day, The Chameleon by night, New Orleans tourists line up to see Werereptile Tami Sakura, vanish. It’s a skill she perfected years ago, before running away from the circus.
Determined to put down roots, she draws The Devil, an entity from the powers-that-be,housed in an enchanted tarot card deck. As the non-corporeal being’s host, Tami can defeat her inner demons and discover love.
Shifter Xander Jones and Tami grew up together. They made a pact to marry if they were both still single at 35. Her birthday was yesterday, and today he’s catching her last performance at the club. Can he actually think she’d honor a ‘contract’ written on a napkin?
Tami is Uncommon, as is her path to true love.
This is book thirteen in the G.R.I.T.S., Love & The Paranormal series — a clean romance that ticks every magical box.
In her mind, Jan is a modern-day Austen protagonist.
As a child, she created elaborate stories involving a pretend cattle ranch guarded by vegetarian dinosaurs and went on adventures with her stuffed teddy bear, creatively named Ted.
After getting out of college in four years (an astounding feat) she began a career in advertising and marketing. Extensive reading during work travel rekindled her imagination and her Rock, Paper, Scissors series was born. These YA Urban Fantasy books are full of action, snark and a hint of romance.
Now she writes full-time in her hometown of New Orleans. The city is its own character in her 22 book paranormal romance series. Those feature a variety of Supernatural Main Characters in search of love. An enchanted deck of tarot cards adds a unique twist to the interwoven storylines of her G.R.I.T.S. books.
Jan Mau Hill writes fast-paced books featuring clever and bold heroines. If that sounds interesting, she’s the author for you. Check out her website at: www.janmauhill.com
This was a fun book to read, it had everything you could ask for in a Romantasy/Shapeshifters with a fun twist of the expected from the characters. I didn’t realize there was a whole series but it read fine stand alone. I will be delving into those as well.
As with all books in the G.R.I.T.S. series, whatever area of New Orleans the story takes place in, the author does an incredible job of bringing us into the action through our senses with enough brush strokes to pique our imagination and allow us to fill in the rest. Tami and Xander are different to every other character in the series, although a little sarcasm being spoken or thought by the leading female MC in each book, makes me think a bit of the author’s personality might be peeking through. Fun! Xander is gorgeous in every way, from career choice to his integrity and sexy smile. His patience with Tami is admirable, especially considering their past, but will he wait for her to grow up and allow herself some grace and joy? Is Tami even ready to settle down?
In Uncommon by Jan Mau Hill, we meet more magical characters living amongst the humans of New Orleans. I have not read all the books in this series and it still works because I read the first few. In those we learned about the special Tarot Deck and how it works in much more detail. Because of this, not a lot of time is spent explaining it to us and I liked that. It’s so much fun reading about characters from past books and having them either in the action of Uncommon, or being talked about. Either way, the world continues to expand and bring in new folks, including (for me) new species of magical beings. If you like a good fake marriage that sizzles, you will love Tami and Xander.
Tami is a Werereptile. Chameleon is her special power; she can seem to disappear by blending into the background.
But the emotional spotlight is firmly on her when old flame Xander suddenly appears after almost twenty years. Teenage sweethearts, they signed a pledge to marry each other by age 35 if neither was already hitched. But Tami ran away from the circus where they and their families performed, and vanished for almost two decades.
Can they rekindle their former relationship and find true, lasting love? Being supernatural in atmospheric New Orleans, things were bound to get complicated. And when an ancient Aztec sacrificial bowl is stolen amid rumors of dark deeds afoot, the pair become embroiled in the hunt for the culprit. Add to that, Tami accepts an intriguing entity from the powers-that-be to help her find happiness. Or will it simply complicate an already challenging situation?
I enjoyed this latest installment in the series, featuring paranormal romance and a dash of mystery. True love is not guaranteed, especially when forbidden ritual magic seems set to ruin the erstwhile lovers' attempt to reunite.
Uncommon is a wonderful romance. I loved Tami and Xander's story. They have a history. In fact, Xander saved a bit from their past where they both agreed to marry and signed the deal. When he approaches Tami with the evidence, the question becomes - is this binding?
The romance in Uncommon is nicely done with plenty of heartwarming moments. The conflict from their past is very real, giving them--especially Tami--a reason to doubt the legitimacy of their love.
When things escalate, Tami and Xander both have to learn to navigate their new reality.
Uncommon is a fun read. I received an ARC from the author and all opinions are my own.
Tami is like us all, a real person. Well, except that she's able to disappear. We all struggle to forgive ourselves for something we’ve done in our past. She’s been running from her past actions as so many of us do. Will she keep running from her problems, or face how her own thoughts are holding her back in life. A wonderfully crafted trip following a woman wrestling their own history and emotions. If you’ve ever held sabotaging self-beliefs, you’ll identify with her dilemma. Can she escape the loop she's stuck in?
I loved Tami and Xander’s story! Humor, romance and interesting characters combine to make this series so fun to read! I love the way characters are introduced and examined more closely amid a backdrop of characters I already know from earlier books in the series. Quite the page turner! Can’t wait to see what happens next! These are my thoughts after enjoying an early copy of the book.
Uncommon, that's Apropos!! So many things in the storyline are very uncommon, but I love it!! I am not sure about Joshua, I have my doubts. But I really like Xander. This is so fun and interesting.
