Skulls and Lace by J.A. Huss
⭐️ 3.5/5

What a wrap up on these serial novellas. It is a neat concept I’ve never heard about before.

Oh Legion and Savannah, I don’t know what to make of them. I went into these stories thinking it’s a romance, but it’s that and so much more. What consequences your choices have, the what ifs, the things you wish you could do over. It really is, The Book of Legion.

Mark 5:9 Then Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “My name is Legion,” he replied, “for we are many.”

Thank you J.A. Huss for providing this e-ARC. All opinions are my own.

LEGENDARY!!!
Here we go... This is the end (I mean, is it?)! And what an ending! I must say, J.A. Huss is unique in her genre, going where she went, telling this story. The boat is sinking but dare we still hope for Legion? For Savannah? For Mercy? For the Badlands? How? But how? Isolation. We reached rock bottom and yet, there was this spark, this need for answers, this powerful belief that everything was possible for them! This 5th book, and conclusion of Book of Legend was grandiose and brilliant in every aspects.

Hmm.... 🤔 for me, the least of the 5 books in this series.
First of all, because of the unexpected Brick thing (where TF did that come from?? 😳 Did I miss something earlier?). Creatively solved 🔪💀 dát dan weer wél. 😆
And secondly, because of the weird, unsatisfying, ending. But.... it looks like a next book is coming!
In line with my previous experiences with Huss books. 😉 "Een beetje vreemd, maar wel lekker!"
None of the books in this series were solid 5 stars for me, but better than just 4 stars, so rounded up to 5. However, I cannot give Skulls and Lace 5 stars.
Loved the book titles and loved the covers! 😍

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephane's Book Reports.

This is the fifth and final book in the Book of Legion. We are back at the MC and Legion has made some choices. But now he is going to have to deal with somethings that has gone sideways with the club. He knows things that you won't know toward the end of the book, but we do get the full story, or we can now have the clear picture of Savannah's mother's part in Legions life. We find out what the deal was that was this nagging feeling in the pit of my stomach about the club. Mercy is away at a fancy school and happy and healthy and it hurt my heart when she and Legion have a visit. I can't tell you another thing about the book. I will say that I loved these books. I devoured them all. I was on the edge of my seat, my heart wound up in my throat and now the time has come to process. This is a story of the way the world sees you and what it deals out to you. How some are born with everything, how some haven nothing. How love is the one thing we all want and need in our life. Choices, how we all have choices and consequences for those choices. It is beautiful and tragic all in every sense of those words. Like I had said before, this is a different kind of read than anything I have read in a long time. I love it and I am so thankful that I got to read it.

This last serial in this series is a serious kick in the nuts! In Smoke and Honey, we were tooling along at a nice steady pace, with a bit of a pickup at the end, but then we hit the ground running in Skulls and Lace. Legion gets put into a seemingly no-win situation, not knowing who to trust, where to turn, who has his back. Savannah, she’s over there in the Ashby mansion making some huge life-changing decisions of her own. The only brother she was close to has left town, her middle brother needs to be put to ground, and I can’t figure out Cash at all, whether he’s turning a new leaf, or repenting for all the offenses he’s committed against Savannah, or if he’s just plain tired.

Julie loves to string readers along at a leisurely pace and then just before the book ends, BAM! Open the floodgates and hit us with this big, climactic ending that leaves you wrung out and breathless at what all just occurred. I must admit, I’m quite sad and a bit salty at Julie for a certain something that occurs that I would never have seen coming. Why, Julie, why?

To me, the ending of this final story of this series didn’t end on a cliffhanger but leaves the reader in a holding pattern of sorts until the next set of serials start to release. In the meantime, my mind will be working overtime with scenarios I would love to see play out.

Skulls & lace the final novella in the Book of Legion was full of secrets, lies, tension and truths. This one had me on edge of my seat from beginning to end with twists that unraveled left me gasping and reeling. Legion is thrown into an impossible situation no matter which way he chooses it's a raw deal. Answers, we're finally getting answers about Eleanor and how she ties into Legion's life and how that relationship evolved into what it was. Legion and Savannah are at an impasse at least where Legion is concerned because no matter how much he loves her he feels the need to let her go but Savannah will not go down without a fight, a fight for their love.

Where this book doesn't end on a cliffy it does leave you wondering... wondering what's to come and yes there will be more so prepare yourselves for another wild ride!

This entire journey has been layered with obsession, secrets, power plays, and emotional landmines — but this installment felt more emotional. Heavier. Everything feels closer to the surface now — the secrets, the tension, the consequences.

Legion is still that intense, morally grey, slightly unhinged man I can’t quit. And Savannah? She’s choosing. She’s fighting. She’s breaking and rebuilding in real time. Their dynamic is messy and complicated...but it feels more real.
So much gets revealed, but somehow there are still layers underneath it all. Just when I thought we were finally getting clarity, another question popped up.

And that ending…
Love love love. The end of “season 1” had my heart breaking for Legion and Savannah and I’m so happy to learn there will be a “season 2” after that ending! It was so raw and real that it almost felt like things wouldn’t turn around. So much happened while still keeping its secrets and revealing others.

The final book in this series sees Legion going back to Badlands MC as soon as he's well enough. He feels that the club is his true family and the land surrounding it is his true home.

"This wasteland keeps our secret, dark and grim — A place where damnation and light begin."

But betrayal is yet again around the corner. Who will stand with him and who will betray him?

"“I got you.”"

Meanwhile Savannah is supremely pissed off with Legion for sneaking off in the middle of the night. But she still loves him and will never give up on him.

""No grace above will break what hell has made, No fear below will stop this vow we've laid. When all is lost and even angels fall— You'll still be mine. I'll still be yours. Through all.""

This book is even more intense than the previous books. However, not all questions are answered. Luckily there will be a season two!

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book and am leaving a completely honest review.

Unbelievable. This is an absolutely original story. “Yellowstone and SOA had a feral baby raised by the devil himself…” and it’s so true. When the richest girl in town falls in love with the MCs bad boy you expect drama. Well this is that x’s 1000. Epic drama and forbidden love that can’t be tamed by anyone or anything. I absolutely love every word. Every heartbreak. Every dramatic and tragic moment. Every secret and lie. Every dark nook and cranny!!!!

This is the fourth novella in a five part serial and I can’t wait for whatever comes next. I’m ready for all the intense emotions she will have me feeling.

I don’t know if I have the words…

First, thank you to J.A. Huss for giving the world Legion… when we didn’t even know we needed him.

This series has demands something from the readers. Every installment cuts deeper, pushes harder, and refuses to offer comfort. And this finale? It stayed true to that in every possible way.

The intensity, the emotion, the way everything converged. It felt inevitable and shocking all at once. The kind of ending that leaves you quiet. The kind that lingers. The kind that makes you want to immediately start over just to experience it again, even knowing it will hurt.

Nothing about this story was safe. Nothing was easy. And that’s exactly why it worked.

Thank you again to JA Huss for the opportunity to read this serial as an ARC omnibus

Skulls and Lace by J.A. Huss is the dark, intense, and satisfying conclusion to the Book of Legion – Badlands MC series. Legion and Savannah’s story comes full circle, with stakes higher than ever. The tension, danger, and passion absolutely explodes off the page.

Legion remains the fiercely possessive, morally gray anti-hero we’ve been rooting for, and Savannah proves once again that she’s strong, determined, and utterly devoted. Their love is doomed, dangerous, and undeniable, and gets the reckoning it deserves.

If you’ve been following this series, Skulls and Lace is a must-read finale: dark, addictive, and emotionally gripping from start to finish.

Thank you to J.A. Huss for the ARC!

I am so glad that JA Huss let us know there will be a "second season" of this story. I was going to be so upset if that is how she ended this series of books. They were so incredible and I needed more. There is so much more to uncover and still left unanswered. We get some answers to the burning questions but not them all. I am so glad we are getting more. I absolutely love these characters and the story. This series has truly kept me on my toes. This is a must read if you have ever read this author before. She has an incredible way of weaving her stories together and making you want for more.

Oh wow! Legion and Savannah are just everything! I wasn't sure what was going to happen in 'Church' but really wasn't expecting that. I am really enjoying this serial release format too. Sometimes it's good to binge read or finish it quickly but there's something to be said about the anticipation of waiting to read the next instalment and having that something to look forward too. While I cannot wait for this to continue, I wait with anticipation, not frustration because this is just so good!

This book is an amazing read that once you start, you cannot put it down. No matter what you need to do, this book demands that you continue to read. It moves along at a pace that is perfect for the flow of the story and makes for an easy and enjoyable read. You will love these characters and no matter what they go through you want to be there for them. These characters feel so real that you feel as though you are part of their world. This book has to be read, you will not be disappointed by this amazing read.

This is the storm

This final book in the first block of the Badlands MC serial is the real storm I was waiting for. It not only rains but pours. And that rain has a colour to it too. ( Metaphorically speaking of course.) This book had me blindly guessing about the finale and problem solutions. I also found it very emotional. It is a good thing that the series will continue because the ending left me wanting more.

Thank you Julie for the ARC. Cannot wait to listen to the audio version in August.

OMG I love this book! What a fantastic read. Not gonna lie this serial gripped me so much throughout all 5 books!
I balled my eyes out reading a certain chapter in this installment, literally ugly tears streaming down my face. It really pulled... nope ripped... my heartstrings.
I've read a few serial novella series and I love the drama, the angst and the cliffhangers!
I can't wait to see what the next season may bring 😍

Where's the trust?

I've got none to offer, and nobody cares anymore what the feelings are of the people they peddle their wares too anyway. So, along with trust, truth has also taken its leave.

I will just say this....

"Truth... more valuable than gold, because truth, even when unwanted, breeds trust. And, trust is even more valuable than truth."

~ quote from... I'd rather not say.

The first four serial episodes introduced us to Legion Kane, outlaw biker from the Badlands MC, and Savannah Ashby, ranch heiress. They met as children and grew to love one another in between all the twists in turns in their life events. Savannah's late mother, Eleanor, played a pivotal role in each of their lives, separately, and was mentioned often, but it's not until this final episode that the reader finally learns why. Episode 4, Smoke and Honey, left us with Legion facing a seeminly no-win situation where he survives, but spoiler...he does in spectacular fashion! Many questions get answered in the final episode of this first Book of Legion. But, Legion and Savannah's story isn't over since the author has promised a book 2! Wow!

Julie always destroys...

Julie has a way of destroying your mind, your heart or your whole world with her words. That's powerful! I want more, so much more. I am marking the days on the calendar until August. It can't come fast enough. Legion has obliterated me. That's it, that's all. My heart.....

Separated again Savannah and Legion still can’t quit. She’s using words to make room in her life for him. His brotherhood is tainted and he’s cleaning house with death and destruction. True love isn’t always easy, pretty, or enough.

This is the perfect wrap up. Would I like more, yes. Am I being demanding and greedy, also yes. This novella wrapped up this series in an unexpected way. Emotional. Demanding. Controlled. Devastating. Atmospheric. Turbulent. Yes I’m still processing. JA Huss has earned my devotion for eternity.
