Storm St. Maur’s novel Tale of Two Princes: Soulbound: Jaeros & Kayl is a fantasy romance chronicling the relationship between Prince Jaeros and a warrior, Kayl. These men are from rival kingdoms and live in a world plagued by long-term wars and political tension. Each man deals with societal expectations, personal desires, and acceptance. In deciding their destiny, they both grapple with free will vs. predetermination.
The novella is different from my usual fantasy read but was well worth it. This was my first romantasy book. The writing style is excellent, balancing description, dialogue, and plot pace; the result being the tale is detailed enough to get the reader invested and consistently engaging. Sentences flow with rich imagery: “. . . cold grey waves of hopelessness.”
The dialogue is authentic and makes the characters realistic. Right from the start, when Jaeros snaps at his father, “For the last time! I do not wish to betroth any of them. No matter how suitable YOU think they are!” The emotional intensity is there, and this continues throughout the story.
In parts of the book, the chapters/passages alternate POV between Jaeros and Kayl; the equal development of both characters and their situations quickly got me invested. As the novella progresses, their troubled emotional states are compellingly and realistically revealed. The internal commentaries are impactful and clearly show feelings in turmoil and self-doubt.
Besides Jaeros and Kayl, there were a lot of intriguing characters and motives. King Yhendorn stood out as a formidable force who added tension to the story. The fantasy world is well developed and has druids, shapeshifting, warriors, and imaginatively named locations: "Growling Peaks” and “Hummingbird Forest.”
The novella left me wanting to know more about the world and its history along with the long-term fate of the characters. I look forward to seeing where this goes. Definitely 5 stars. The book is aimed at 18 and up due to adult themes and mature content.
I thank the author for the ARC copy and I leave my honest review. I loved the 'tale' of these two characters, both battling their own demons to find their truths. I flip-flopped between who was my favorite MMC, and I still don't know! True to fantasy, there were euphemisms and fantasized words, but there was a glossary to help with the understanding, and a map! I loved how the characters grew within the short space of words allowed for a novella. There were little twists in the story, and a hint of where it could go if we had followed them into the future. The author did offer bonus chapters as an optional addition to the ARC, and well ... they were perhaps a tad too spicy for my liking. :O I probably would have preferred just the standard novella - but I did request them as part of the ARC, so be fore-warned it was graphic (at least for me). I think if the author had developed this into a full novel, it would have allowed further depth and detail. I still loved the overall feeling of the story and there were a few phrases I think are chef's kiss! If you're looking for something light and entertaining; easy to read with a little fantasy, and a little romance, then I recommend it.
** Thanks for the opportunity to ARC this book** Firstly, I would love to have read this as a fully-fledged novel where I could dive deeper, but as it is, I found it ticking many boxes. I found it easy to read, descriptive without the need for long-assed sentences. I love how Jaeros develops as a character. OMG I thought he was going to be the most annoying, feeble dweep who I would have to endure. Thankfully I was wrong! I love his development. The fantasy worldbuilding was pretty great and the MM spice ... hubbah! hubbah! The banter came later in the book - was very cute and appreciated! The triggers were lightly handled so not offensive to read. I cannot compare this to the big romantasy books, as this is a fantasy romance novella and I would like to give it a 4.5 star based on the entertainment factor. Alas, no option for that, so I give it the extra .5 star as support to an indie author who has potential. Thank you!
ARC REVIEW: Thank you so much to the author for the ARC!!
I liked this! It was a fun time with an intriguing romance set in a fantasy world. Though it was only a novella, I was still intrigued in the world due to the very descriptive words and overall world.
I will say I was confused as there wasn’t much backstory to the world and there was a lot of characters thrown in, but I suppose with a novella it’s hard to build up a world when you have so much to get across. I really enjoyed the romance and the spice was fun too!
Once again, thank you so much to the author for ten ARC!
