Mostly Improvised: How I Survived Ray Charles, Reindeer, and 3,000 Hotel Rooms

Rate this book
From Illinois cornfields to late-night clubs, from the back of a tour bus to the stage with Ray Charles, David Hoffman has lived a life guided by intuition, music, and a bit of luck—and he’s taken notes along the way.

Mostly Improvised is a funny, soulful, and deeply human memoir by a world-traveling trumpet player who never expected any of it to happen. One moment he’s learning from legends, the next he’s breaking down in a hotel hallway, wandering through spiritual mysteries, or finding unexpected grace from strangers in the unlikeliest places.

Hoffman’s stories move from the grit of Chicago jazz joints to the wide-open highways of America, from the chaos of the road to quiet moments of insight. It’s a book about music, survival, friendship, the gift of intuition, and the strange ways life keeps us (barely) in tune.

If you’ve ever wondered what really happens behind the scenes on the road, or how a musician stays sane through decades of travel, hotel rooms, and impossible gigs—this is the ride you’ve been waiting for.

Interesting and informative

Dave Hoffman is a good musician neither a good story to tell. His work with Ray Charles is legendary. His contribution to the cultural life of Central Illinois is appreciated.
