Deceived: The D'Immortali Vampire Dynasty: 1

Rate this book
The Dominico family controls Venice—every shadow, every secret, every vampire—and rules the D’Immortali Dynasty with an unforgiving fist.

When Don Marcello ordered my father's assassination, he thought he'd settled an ancient rivalry. He started a war instead.

Now I'll paint this ancient city red with their blood.

I have one chance at revenge—marry Gabriel Dominico, the Don's golden heir, and destroy their empire from within. My plan is simple. I'll become his innocent bride, hide a knife in my veil, and carve out his heart to keep for my own.

But as we exchange our vows, Dante Dominico returns.

The exiled son.
The traitor the empire tried to destroy.

In front of Venice's most powerful vampire families, Dante shatters my carefully laid plans like they were made of glass, claiming an ancient right to steal me from his brother's altar.

Now I'm bound to the wrong Dominico. The brutal, ruthless male forged in the fighting pits of the Fossa, returned to Venice to wreak his own version of vengeance.

And if I’m not careful, I'll be the one ending up in a box.

DECEIVED is a steamy enemies to lovers vampire mafia romance set against the haunting backdrop of Venice, with forced marriage, forbidden romance, hot villains, age gap, morally gray antiheroes, power plays and a fierce, stabby heroine.

Spicy Level: 🌶️🌶️/5

So, L.A. McGinnis has basically solidified herself as one of my favourite authors when it comes to vampire romance. I just know that if I'm picking up one of her books, it's going to be romantic, refreshing, exciting, beautifully written, packed with fantastic characters, witty banter, tension, adventure, and just an all-round entertaining reading experience. Every time I pick up one of her books, it feels like she is writing directly to the part of my brain that loves vampires, politics, romance, and chaos. And this book was absolutely no different!!!

Going into this one, I was actually a little nervous because her Fated in Blood series was one of my favourite series that I read last year. I didn't want the same story again. I wanted something fresh while still being at that same level and calibre. Thankfully, this felt completely different while still delivering everything I love about her writing.

𝙎𝙮𝙣𝙤𝙥𝙨𝙞𝙨:
This follows Emberline Diravello, who has spent her entire life being groomed by her father and uncle to eventually lead her family's faction within the D'Immortali Dynasty, a powerful vampire mafia made up of five ruling families. But before her father can officially name her as his successor, he is murdered. With suspicion falling on Don Marcello Dominico, the ruler of the Dynasty, Ember and her uncle begin plotting revenge. Their plan somehow, inadvertently and unexpectedly for her, places Ember at the altar, engaged to Gabriel Dominico, the Don's golden heir. But before she can say "I do", the wedding is interrupted by Gabriel's older brother, Dante Dominico, the exiled son everyone believed dead. Claiming an ancient right, Dante steals Ember from the altar and throws her into a dangerous world of family politics, power struggles, conspiracies, secrets, and vengeance.

𝙏𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙁𝙚𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨:
One of the things I loved most about this book was Ember. She's very much a vampire princess. Prim and proper on the surface, but underneath she's fierce, determined, deadly with a knife, and absolutely willing to go to war for the people she loves. Everything she does is driven by loyalty to her family, her father, and the legacy he left behind. She wants justice, and she wants answers, and I loved how relentless she was in pursuing both.

Then we have Dante. Dante is the exiled heir. The son who was cast out, forgotten, and presumed dead. Fifty years spent surviving brutal fighting pits have shaped him into someone scarred, dangerous, ruthless, and incredibly compelling. He's rough around the edges, morally grey, and has that perfect combination of danger and charisma that makes you immediately understand why Ember can't stop thinking about him because I couldn't...

The political side of this story was also fantastic. There are conspiracies, revenge plots, shifting alliances, betrayals, secrets, and power plays everywhere. Every time I thought I understood what was happening, another layer would get peeled back and reveal something new. It felt like there was always another scheme unfolding behind the scenes.

I also absolutely loved the Venice setting. Having actually visited Venice myself, I could picture everything so clearly. The canals, the architecture, the atmosphere, the history. It added so much richness to the story and made the entire book feel so much more incredibly immersive.

One thing I found interesting is that this book feels like it's setting up a much bigger story. While Dante and Ember are clearly the focus here, there are strong hints that Gabriel Dominico and Nico Draconi are going to play much larger roles moving forward, and we know L.A. McGinnis writes a delicious why-choose! It feels very much like a slow-burn where each relationship is being developed gradually rather than rushing everything at once, which I actually appreciated.

My only real criticism was that the romance occasionally felt like it flipped a switch a little too quickly. There were moments where the enemies-to-lovers transition happened faster than I expected and declarations of love arrived a little earlier than I would have liked. It wasn't enough to impact my enjoyment, but it was one of the few places where the pacing felt slightly rushed.

𝙏𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙨:
▶ Vampire Mafia Romance
▶ Enemies to Lovers
▶ Forced/Arranged Marriage
▶ Revenge Plot
▶ Morally Grey MMC
▶ Touch Her and Die
▶ Political Intrigue
▶ Mafia Romance
▶ Virgin FMC
▶ Multi POV

and 𝙈𝙞𝙘𝙧𝙤 𝙏𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙚𝙨:
▷ The Other Brother
▷ "Tell Me to Stop", "It Won't Fit", "More", "Mine", "Greedy Girl"
▷ "My Wife"
▷ Banter
▷ Tending to Injuries
▷ Potato Sack over Shoulder
▷ Stop the Wedding
▷ Finger Licking Good

Overall, this was everything I wanted from a vampire romance.

Thank you to L.A. McGinnis for the gifted copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

No words.

I literally was made speechless by this as I finished the last few pages.
I don't even know how to fully explain this book. Vampires, mafia, fighting pits with gladiator vibes... Enemies to lovers, chemistry that should ignite the pages.

Just WOW.

What IS troublesome is how quickly I need more..and I blame L.A. McGinnis for that.

Just released on 4.27, this one is gonna fly off shelves. Thank you again to The Author Agency and the author for an E-ARC.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read! I honestly love all of the main characters. Nico is hilarious. Ember is feisty. Dante is protective. Gabriel has a strong mind. I can’t wait to see more from the characters in the next book. The ending left me wishing I had it in my hands now!

Plot: 4.5/5 • Spice: 2/5 ➡️➡️➡️ Secrets between families. An arranged marriage trounced by a returning heir who was banished. A love (potential) triangle? square? There seems like there will be four of them.

Dante storms in on Ember and Gabriel’s arranged marriage. Surfacing secrets that have been hidden by (almost) everyone. Dante returning puts a damper in Ember’s plan. After being forced to marry Gabriel so took this as an opportunity to find the truth about her father’s murder. She’s out for vengeance. Now forced to marry Dante. Things have changed.

Gabriel, Dante and Nico are all in this together. Nico, the body guard. The know it all. The best protector/warrior there is. All three seem to have feelings for Ember. Ember seems to have feelings for them all. Even if they’re small. But her feelings for Dante trump all right now. He’s her world. He saves her. He gives up everything for her.

After her attempted murder, she’s in hiding. Only Nico and Gabriel know where she’s at. Dante has been taken. Everyone assumes he’s dead. The families are holding funerals for Dante and Ember thinking they got away with the scheme. One’s alive and one’s missing.

This was so damn good. Vampire feeding families. The drama, the secrets, the murders. Ugh. I devoured this. It’s technically not a Rh/WC, but I feel like it may turn…but what do i know. Cant wait for book 2. 🩸🩸🩸🩸

I have read and enjoyed a few of L.A. McGinnis' book series, so I was excited to start book one of her newest fantasy series, and I was not disappointed. I find myself now excited as I wait with great anticipation for book two.

Personally, I am a fan of her storytelling, which I find a wonderous mix of themes and genres that include vampire fantasy, strong female leads, great character creations, humour, adult themes, exciting and creative narrative. I was engrossed from the start and wonder why I am surprised each time I pick up one of the author's books, as I get addicted to the point of finding it hard to put down. There is continuous activity, engaging characters and suspense that has me needing to discover what happens next, with each twist and turn.

At first, I noticed some similarities to previous series, like family deception, underestimated female protagonist, secrets uncovered, vulnerability and trauma, but then realised that is probably what draws me to the author's books. However, with each series comes a difference and uniqueness in setting, environment, and characters, and although some similar themes, the books are distinctive in their storytelling and imaginative conception.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

What a start to the series! I instantly went to look when book two is going to be released because I need it already!

Deceived gives you everything you look for in a dark why choose paranormal romance: vampires, spice, loathing to longing, betrayal and a cliffhanger ending that has you yearning for the next book.

I loved all the vibes this book was giving off and completely fell in love with the characters. We have one strong love interest going into book two but you will definitely know who’s going to building the why choose as well.

This is a must read if you love why choose paranormal romance!

I throughly enjoyed this book the story/plot sucks you in from the beginning. I went in just knowing it was about Vampires and there was going to be a forced marriage. Well boy oh boy the twist to that I was actually mad about in the beginning than I absolutely loved it! Gabriel, Nico & Dante are so great in their own ways also didn’t figure out this was a RH until after I finished this book and I’m here for it idk how much her husband will be though once that trope actually happens hahaha
Cannot wait for book two!

Family drama, ancient secrets and intrigues, mafia families and vampires.

Mysterious family dynamic and secrets who's unravelled in this vampire murder mystery in a mafia world.

The tension throughout this book was excellent! The twists a bit shocking and I loved the relationship between our fmc and mmc (not revealing who).

The ending had me in my thoughts for a while since I did not see any of it coming!

Thank you book sirens for an arc of this book!

This was my first time reading a vampire magia book. I loved it right from the start.

We have deception and betrayal. Then an arranged marriage that gets hijacked by an older sibling everyone thought was dead. There are plots and plans on place. Though this just leaves everything open to get thwarted.

I didnt realize when I started this that it was leading to a RH, but I'm all for it.

This is the first book in a series and I cant wait for the next one.

Thanks to the Author Agency and the author L. A. McGinnis for the e-arc in exchange for honest feedback.

This was so good! I loved the whole vampire mafia. From the very first chapter, I was invested. You can’t go wrong with my two faves. Mafia and vampires. So this was a huge win. I loved the Terri’s m twists and turns. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough. This was hot, chaotic, intense. Once you pick this up, you will not be putting it down until you’re finished.

Deceived was such a fantastic start to this series. I am obsessed with the characters. The World building for this new mafia/vampire world is so easy to picture and immerse yourself in. Our Fmc is spicy and dangerous. I love her attitude and fierce determination. I really enjoy all of the MMC’s. Hot vampire men, say less. I’m very curious where the story will go and the ending left me begging for book 2. As always, I am thoroughly impressed with her writing style. Definitely pick this book up if you are into the supernatural!

Full review to come, but this was pure gold. I am obsessed!

——————-

Laura!!! Taking the steamy RH vampires we know and love from you and adding in a mafia twist was pure genius! I’ve fallen head over heels for these characters, and immediately want to jet off to Venice and further immerse myself within this world. I devoured this book in a matter of hours and am already begging for book 2!

Emberline is fierce and formidable, but also sheltered from society. She was raised to be nothing more than a weapon, and I love watching her go from predator to pawn and back again with the help of some unforgettable MMCs.

Gabriel, Nico, and Dante all give her strength in one way or another. Whether that’s courage, acceptance, levity, or love, they prove time and time again whose side they’re truly on. Each drawn to Ember in different ways, yet able to give her everything she needs.

And let’s be honest, they’re all down bad for our girl! The tension between Ember and Dante was pure gold andI cannot wait to watch this relationship develop into so much more!

I have a feeling that in the aftermath of that ending, we’ll see a deeper connection to Ember with Gabriel and Nico and really kick off this RH right!! And I cannot wait!!!

Okay, the book was good. I had no idea it was a "why choose" kind of story. (I believe it's the first one I've ever read.) So... I don't really know what to think of it.

In this volume, it worked. It was funny, and one of the guys was definitely luckier than the others . But I'm scared for the next one because I think I would enjoy it more if I liked all of the love interests.

For instance, I liked Niko and Dante, so every moment they shared with Ember was delightful. However, I really don't like Gabriel (at all). So just the thought of him being with her makes me feel bad. I'm dreading it.

Plot-wise, it was very good. I figured out from the very beginning that Giovanni was the big bad villain. Literally from Chapter 1, when he was the one who discovered the body with her. It just screamed betrayal.

Everything that happened afterward was entertaining, right up until about 70% into the book, when, out of nowhere, Emberline woke up and was just like, "Okay, I'll infiltrate this place and do everything myself like a fool, even though I don't know how to swim."
The day before, they had been talking about carefully planning everything before taking action...

She literally got herself killed and ruined everyone else's plan. I was flabbergasted by her sheer stupidity.
**
As for the love interests, I will go in order: who she met first and yadda yadda.

Gabriel appeared from her perspective as a cold, calculating prince, I suppose. From the few interactions they had, I was like, okay, he is gorgeous, but possibly the enemy?
And then... we got into HIS head.

He was intrigued by her from the moment he saw her... okay, I'll give him that. However, every single time he thought about her, it was through the lens of his cock. He was not intrigued by her as a person; he was simply lusting after her. . I was thoroughly disgusted.

And then he learned that he had to marry her. The first thing that came to his mind must have been their wedding night. I'm so sure of it. He would have done everything to her if they had gotten together. I wouldn't say that he would have forced her, but maybe he would have tried to seduce her into doing it that very night.

Yeah, I can totally see him doing that. Being like, "You're mine. Do your duty, wife," or something.
I really despised him.
I don't know, maybe it's because he is his father's son. He was raised to think he had all the power in the world, and even though he saw Emberline as someone dangerous, I feel like he always kind of saw her as lesser than him.
He just really rubbed me the wrong way from the start.

**
Nico was this dark shadow guard, a bit of a seducer and a bit funny too. I really did like him.

At the beginning, when he first got alone in a room with Emberline and the chemistry between them was already palpable, I was like, "Isn't he supposed to be the best friend of her future husband?" I hadn't understood yet that it was a why choose story.

But even then, it felt more "natural," if I dare say so. I feel like Emberline and Nico are alike in some ways, so the two of them together just made sense to me. I could picture it. Their dynamic was really good (way better than with Gabriel).

So yeah, I don't really have anything bad to say about Nico. And I do want to see more of him in the second volume.

**
And finally, Dante.

I knew there was a high chance he would end up being my favorite. The only things that could have made me dislike him never happened. (Thankfully.)

First of all, he was kind of her "fated companion." They were destined to be together before she was even born, and her father asked him to marry her before he died. So it really did feel like something unavoidable.

Then, when he stole her away from Gabriel (and I was so happy) and brought her to the bridal chamber, he did nothing to her. I was beyond happy. I was literally kicking my feet because he seemed like this big, intimidating brute with an incredibly gentle heart.

The way their relationship developed was extremely satisfying. A true slow burn. He was always so careful with her, and the most important thing to me was this: whenever we were in hishead and he was thinking about her, he was respectful. Even when lust crept into his thoughts, it was always about giving to her, never taking from her.

"And while Emberline was a succulent, tempting treat to a starving male who'd lived in the desert for half a life, I didn't wan't her body. Well, I din't only want her body."

"I was dangerously close to getting on my knees and begging"

Even when he wanted something he would not even think about taking it but asking for it.

**
Finally, about Emberline as our main character, I am conflicted.

She was supposed to be smart and strong... and she was sometimes, but she also wasn't most of the time. She was very impulsive, and considering that Giovanni and even Enzo were her mentors, it really didn't make sense to me that she was being driven by her emotions this badly.

She was also more sheltered than she thought. Like, why couldn't she even drink blood directly from the vein? Because she was a woman? Why didn't she learn how to swim? Does Luka know how to swim? (I really want the answer to that.)

She was a pawn and was betrayed most of the time, but she stayed strong. I'll give her that. And I do hope we get to see her fight in the second volume.

I want to see her being smart, strong, ruthless. And the one thing I don't want is for her to be distracted by lust. (I hate when this happens.)

A vampire mafia romance?! Yes, please!!

4 ⭐️
1.5🌶

What's inside:
- Forced Marriage
- Enemies to Lovers
- Vampire Mafia
- Morally Grey
- Revenge Plot
- Fiesty FMC
- Scarred MMC
- 3 Brothers (Building into a RH!)
- Trauma
- Forced Proximity
- Virgin FMC
- Touch Him/Her and Die

Emberline is a tough and independent mafia princess who's father was recently murdered. Raised and trained to take over the family, misogynistic tradition passes the torch to her brother and leaves her with nothing but to seek vengeance on the clan that had her father killed. When her uncle trades her away in marriage to the heir of that clan, she plots to enact their destruction from the inside.

"Well, he could go fuck himself. They all could. No male was the boss of me. I’d worked too godsdamned hard to carve out a future for myself to end up as some… fucking mafia bride in a bad Shakespearean play."

While she is at the alter saying her vows to the golden-boy heir, his banished older brother shows up and steals her for himself.

“A word of advice. She belongs to me now,” he snarled, like a dog warning the rest of the pack away from his kill. “Emberline is mine. Anyone who touches her, anyone who so much as looks at her wrong is dead, and that includes every one of you fuckers in this room.”
Then the world turned upside down, the air punching out of my lungs as the bastard tossed me over his shoulder and stalked out of the chapel.

Bound to the wrong brother, she now has to navigate being married to the brutal and scarred warrior that is her husband and enacting revenge on his family for her father's murder.

I thoroughly enjoyed the vampire mafia aspect of this book, combining the magic and skills of vampires with a mafia romance hit several buttons. I loved that the FMC is tough and fiesty and she takes no crap and speaks her mind. She's a handful, and she isn't waiting around for a man to hold her hand while she does what she needs to do.

Now, let's talk about the men...Whew! We have Gabriel, the golden boy heir she was supposed to marry - he's hot and broody and wanted Ember for himself.
Then there is Dante, the exiled brother who had to survive 50 years in the fighting pits to escape and make his way back for revenge on his father. He's dark, angry, scarred and he harbors an inner monster that craves violence.
Last, but definitely not least is Nico. He's the brother-from-another-mother to Dante and Gabriel. He's the cheery golden retriever of the group that makes heart-hands when he's covered in blood after making a kill.
There is absolutely something hot and to-die-for about each one of them nd I can't wait for the reverse harem to take off in the next book!! GIMME!

I enjoyed this story and will 100% be continuing in when the next book, Desired, releases in June.

Thank you to L.A. McGinnis for an eARC of Deceived.

L.A. McGinnis said: Dark Mafia Vampires, and in response, I said: Say. Less. If you haven’t read McGinnis’s books yet, you are missing out! I INHALED this story and the title is 100% perfect because I was deceived and lulled into a false sense of security multiple times — McGinnis is the queen when it comes to a plot twist that you can never see coming!

The Dominico family controls all of Venice, ruling the D’Immortali Dynasty with uncompromising control. But, when Ember’s father is assassinated, instead of settling an ancient rivalry, a war is sparked. Ember is determined to get her revenge and paint the city in their blood. In marrying Gabriel Dominico, the Don’s golden heir, she’ll destroy the empire from within. But before vows can be exchanged, Dante Dominico returns – the exiled son and traitor to the empire. Dante shatters Ember’s carefully laid plans, claiming an ancient right to steal her from his brother at the altar. Now? She’s bound to the wrong Dominico – the brutal, ruthless male forged in the fighting pits of the Fossa who’s ready to seek out his own vengeance. And if they’re not careful, they both could end up in a box…

Holy. Smokes. I knew this was going to be good, but I didn’t know just how good! Here I am, minding my business and starting to fall for the golden heir with plans of his own (there’s more than meets the eye with ALL of these MCs!), and his brother comes in like a wrecking ball and flips the script in a way I didn’t see coming. DANTE. Dante entered and demanded that all eyes be on him, and I could not look away (not that I wanted to). Dante became my entire world and nothing else mattered once I got to see behind the battle-hardened warrior’s scarred exterior – he’s seriously vying to my favorite man L.A. McGinnis has ever written (which is saying something because there is one male no one has held a candle to, but Dante might just be THAT guy!). The enemies to lovers tension between Dante and Ember was literally setting my fingertips on fire, I could not click the pages fast enough on my kindle! Their banter? Impeccable. The PINING? Lordt have mercy. The touch & ☠️ energy is over here having me squealing with glee! The fact that each of these MCs can hold their own and have such strong wills endeared them all to me, and the vulnerability when trust builds, a revenge pact becoming so much more? SWOON. I am ride or ☠️ for Ember and Dante, and don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about Gabriel and his right hand, Nico, they’ll have their chance for me to gush about them too because that final plot twist?! I am DESTROYED – emotionally and mentally, staring at a wall distraught.

I CANNOT WAIT FOR BOOK 2!!!

This was my first time reading this author, and the blurb immediately hooked me, making a strong first impression, after all, who can resist a dark, brooding vampire trope? In Deceived, the opening instalment of the Immortali Vampire Dynasty, we don’t just get one such vampire, but three - brothers, all drawn to the same woman, Emberline DiRavello. The story begins with tragedy as Emberline discovers her father’s body, his heart torn out. She blames Don Marcello and becomes consumed by revenge, willing to ignite a war if that’s what it takes. Her plan is bold and dangerous, starting with marrying Gabriel, the Don’s heir, positioning herself to destroy the family from the inside, but events begin to spiral and unravel when Dante Marcello, the exiled eldest son, returns, driven by his own vendetta. His dramatic reappearance, including abducting the bride, throws Emberline’s own carefully laid plans into chaos.

This is a dark, steamy, fast-paced paranormal mafia romance set in a hauntingly atmospheric gothic version of Venice where danger and menace lurks in the shadows, far removed from the romanticised image of gondoliers and serenades. The story is told through multiple points of view, offering insight into each character’s motives as they pursue their own agendas, adding depth to an already tension-filled plot packed with twists, betrayals, intrigue and shifting alliances, but the real strength lies in the characters. Emberline is a formidable heroine fierce, and far more dangerous than she initially appears in a world that underestimates her and beneath the façade of a refined socialite lies a sharp, calculating mind. Dante brings a darker edge, brutal and scarred, shaped by his time in the fighting pits of Fossa, convinced he’s broken and beyond redemption. Gabriel appears to be the perfect heir, his father’s chosen successor but like with Emberline there’s more to him than meets the eye. Finally, there’s Nico, the youngest brother, whose charming, almost playful demeanour masks the lethal edge of a skilled assassin. All three brothers are inexplicably drawn to Emberline, forming complicated alliances as they each seek to protect her, feelings she seems to reciprocate. The dynamic between the four adds both emotional intensity and intrigue especially as their loyalties and desires begin to blur. But before she’s forced into choosing between them, the story delivers a powerful and dramatic cliffhanger ending that leaves everyone reeling.

Overall, this is a strong introduction to L. A. McGinnis’s work and an excellent start to the series. It’s action-packed from the outset, with a gripping, fast-moving plot full of secrets, betrayals, and revenge, alongside intense chemistry. The cast is compelling, with morally grey characters you’ll either love or love to hate and I’m already desperate to see where the story goes next.

Mafia Vampires

Wow, This is a fantastic start to a new series by LA McGinnis (The D'Immortali Vampire Dynasty). I haven't found a book by her that I haven't loved and this is no exception; a fast-paced vampire mafia why choose romance with a sassy female MC who is determined to get revenge for her father's murder, and three males who find themselves falling for her.

After finding her father dead in their courtyard Emberline vowed revenge against the Dominico family Don who ordered his death. But she ends up finding herself engaged to his son and heir, Gabriel, and plans change, marry the son and then kill the father. Until her plans are forced to change again when she's stolen at the alter by his brother Dante.

💖 Emberline has been trained by her father for years to take over from him, skilled in diplomacy and killing, though he hadn't yet petitioned that she could take over, as traditionally it was always the men.
💖 Gabriel is the heir to the ruling family, he's a killer when he needs to be and will protect what he sees as his city; and though he'll deny it, is sweet on Ember.
💖 Nico is an assassin working for/with Gabriel and assigned to be Ember's bodyguard until the wedding. He's wonderfully funny at times but is also a member of the assassin Brotherhood and can become a shadow when needed.
💖 Dante is Gabriel's brother, a brooding monster, who everyone thought was dead.

Revenge should have been the end of it. But somewhere between our wedding ceremony and our first argument, standing in front of me with her chin up and eyes blazing, she'd become something I couldn't lose.

But trapped with Dante she finds her plans changing again when she realises she might have an ally, and heated arguments soon become heated sheets. Ember isn't the only one with plans, and while Dante starts working with her, Gabriel and Nico are also plotting. But they're not the only ones, with deception everywhere in the vampire mafia families of Venice.

A brilliant start to The D'Immortali Vampire Dynasty with action from the start and really well written main characters with tension, desire and chemistry. There are characters you will fall in love with, humor, action, betrayal, deception, love, secrets, danger, great character development, fantastic twists, romance and steam. I couldn't put this down and after that ending I can't wait to start the next in the series.

Thank you L.A. McGinnis for sending me a copy of this book to ARC read, I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Deceived: The D’Immortali Vampire Dynasty Book 1 by L.A. McGinnis is a deliciously dark, fast burn enemies to lovers vampire mafia romance that sinks its teeth into you from the very first page and refuses to let go.

Set against the moody backdrop of Venice, this story blends high stakes revenge, forced proximity (via a very dramatic altar interruption), and scorching chemistry into a gothic cocktail that’s equal parts bloody and seductive. 😜

The premise is 🤌🏻🤌🏻, it’s for fans of morally gray antiheroes and stabby heroines…. Emberline (our fierce FMC) watches her family get destroyed by the powerful Dominico vampire dynasty. Her meticulously plotted revenge? Marry the golden heir Gabriel, play the innocent bride, then gut the empire from the inside. Simple, right?

That’s until exiled brother Dante, the brutal, (battle hardened fighter forged in the pits) storms the wedding and claims her as his by ancient right. Cue the forced marriage to the “wrong” brother, simmering hatred that flips into forbidden heat, and a web of power plays, betrayals, and secrets that keep the tension sky-high. (Yeah, keep up 😜)

I loved Dante, he is the ultimate damaged, ruthless hero. He’s not just “morally gray”, he was exiled, and now back for blood (and now, her). The age gap tension and his intense, possessive energy make every interaction crackle. He’s the kind of villainous love interest who makes you root for him even while questioning your life choices. 😂

Emberline is smart, vengeful, and unapologetically stabby. She doesn’t lose her edge once the marriage happens, instead, she navigates the dangerous new dynamic with cunning and fire. The banter between her and Dante is sharp, witty, and often laugh out loud funny amid the darkness.

Steamy and plenty of it, with that “hate you but can’t keep my hands off you” energy.
If you’re into tropes like forced marriage, forbidden romance, revenge plots gone sideways, hot morally gray vampires, and a fierce heroine who brings a knife to a wedding, this delivers in spades. It’s got the dark glamour of vampire lore with the ruthless family intrigue of mafia romance, all wrapped in lush Venetian settings.

For me, Deceived is a gripping, addictive read that left me eager for more of the D’Immortali world.
If you like your romance dark, possessive, and dripping with tension (think a vampiric The Godfather meets Twisted) enemies to lovers with a Venetian twist, pick this up.
It’s bloody good fun. 😜

(I devoured it and immediately wanted the next one.)

Highly recommended for those who enjoy steamy paranormal mafia romance with bite. 😜

Ember's father is murdered, his heart ripped right from his chest. In her mourning, she is left to believe that the head of the Dynasty, the Dominicos, is to blame for his death. Her uncle, Gio, helps her come up with a plan to get revenge. When that plan goes south, he betrays her, giving her away to marry into the Dominico family as a truce. In reality, Gio has been using her since she was young. The ulterior motives in the Venice Dynasty are plentiful, as everyone has their own.

Ember is to marry Gabriel. At the altar, his brother returns after 50 years fighting in the pit at the Fossa, causing Ember to marry Dante instead. Dante was sent to the Fossa by his father in hopes that he would never come back. So his return takes many by surprise, as most thought he was already dead. A lot is going on politically, and a good number of vampires in here are awful people who would sell out their own grandmother if it benefited them. So Ember fulfills her family's duty and marries Dante to ensure she can get revenge.

This is supposed to be enemies-to-lovers, but that is incredibly short-lived. The entire book encompasses a few weeks. Within a week, they are already in love yet unwilling to tell each other. Dante dashes her trust in two ways: by keeping secrets and by humiliating Ember in public during an incident with his ex-girlfriend. This is a tipping point for the newlyweds. The spice level ratchets up at this point, and their trust takes on new levels. The next morning, Nico and Dante are discussing the revenge plans, and Ember comes down. She is angry and demands to know everything. This prompts her to act, setting off an avalanche of events with serious consequences.

I dislike it when people do something unwise, and everyone around them suffers for it. I know it moves the story toward the climax, but if Ember is set up to be strong and smart, having her be unsafe just doesn't fit. Dante leaving her after everything that happened also does not make sense. The setup for the climax does not match the protective, careful, smart duo that was built up to this point. There is strong chemistry between Dante and Ember, with an establishment of why choose with Nico and Gabriel. How the hell this will happen, since the two are so into each other, I have no idea.

It ends on a cliffhanger, leaving much of what was set up in this book unresolved for the future. I will read the next book as I want to know where this story will eventually go. I got the advance copy from BookSirens and gave my opinions freely.

L.A. McGinnis has done it again! Deceived completely pulled me into a vampire world that felt rich, dangerous, and impossible to leave. The world-building is absolutely phenomenal. From the powerful vampire dynasties ruling Venice to the mafia-style politics, betrayals, and blood feuds, every page feels layered with history, power, and secrets. This isn’t just a vampire romance—it’s an entire world where every decision has deadly consequences.

I loved the twist of Emberline being destined to marry Gabriel, only to be stolen away by his exiled brother, Dante, at the altar. What starts as an unwanted fate slowly transforms into one of the most compelling slow-burn romances I’ve read. Watching Emberline and Dante tear down each other’s walls while trying to survive everything working against them was emotional, intense, and completely addictive.

The family drama is next level. The Dominico family gives off all the vibes of a ruthless mafia empire, where loyalty is bought with blood, betrayal lurks around every corner, and power is worth killing for. Every conversation had me wondering who could actually be trusted.

And then there’s the passion. The chemistry between Emberline and Dante practically leaps off the page. Their stolen moments are filled with longing, tension, and vulnerability, making every emotional breakthrough feel earned. But just when your heart starts to heal, McGinnis rips it apart with heartbreaking twists that left me feeling every ounce of their pain.

That ending? Absolutely cruel in the best possible way. The cliffhanger had me staring at my Kindle, wondering how I’m supposed to wait for the next book after that. I need answers, I need justice, and I desperately need more Dante and Emberline.

If you love vampire romance mixed with mafia intrigue, forbidden love, political power plays, unforgettable characters, and enough emotional damage to leave you thinking about the story long after you’ve finished, Deceived is an absolute must-read. I cannot wait for the next installment!

Emberline’s father is the head of one of five of the vampire dynasty families and is assassinated. Emberline seeks revenge, and ends up learning about an old agreement that says she must marry the son of the Dominico family, Gabriel. On their wedding night, Dante reappears, the exiled son... And we’re only 35% in.

OOOF this was twisty. Several times I thought I knew what was happening, and then there would be a surprise. It does end in a cliffhanger. I did not know this was going in, but just as a FYI. I have seen some describe this book as a “why choose”, which isn't always my favorite, but I enjoyed the author's take. And I would say it's more of a loose interpretation of the why choose trope.

We do get great banter and spice, which I enjoy. I also think the enemies to lovers, was done well, very strong on the enemies. I hope we get to see more of her brother in the future books, I enjoyed seeing their bond. I also liked Nico’s character, kinda being a ally to Emberline. The vampire/fantasy elements were done well, sometimes too much of the fantasy world building can confuse me and take me out of the story, but I thought the author did a great job of explaining how everyone fit together. Although there is a forced marriage, I also thought it did a good job of showing strong women, with both Emberline, and one of the heads of the families.

This is Book 1 in the D’Immortali Vampire Dynasty series, the second releasing in June, and I am definitely excited to see what happens next.

If you enjoy enemies to lover, vampire/mafia adjacent, with a fierce strong FMC I definitely recommend checking Deceived out. Thank you to The Author Agency for the ARC.

Deception, betrayal, and love. Add mafia vampires to that and you can’t lose!

I loved this book.

Heart pounding edge of your seat moments, plenty of danger, well woven steamy scenes, and very likeable characters (well except the bad guys).

I really like the characters…Nico is my favourite! He’s so funny at times, which is a contrast to what you’d expect from an assassin. I was rooting for Gabriel to get the girl, but there’s still time. And Dante is the brooding, broken brother who sees himself as a monster but actually care more than he lies to admit or show. Then you have Emberline, the badass FMC who is good at biding her time to get what she wants and avenge her father’s death, but is also good at pretending to be a docile socialite to hide in plain sight.

The multi POV is always a plus for me, and you get parts of this story from the POV of Emberline, Gabriel and Dante.

There’s a lot of twist and turns, and everyone seems to be scheming in one way or another. But even the schemes have schemes, there’s so many layers and deception feels like it’s everywhere. The revelations that come out surrounding Gabriel’s involvement with Dante, and Giovannis true nature are epic.

Sexual tension is prevalent throughout, the three MMCs all have feelings for Emberline, which they don’t understand, but are willing to protect her with their lives…despite barely knowing her. And she is inexplicably drawn to each of them too.

And that ending! The devastation could be felt from all the characters, yet the epilogue shows that the scheming doesn’t stop. I can’t wait for the next book!

The only negative was I had to keep translating some of the Italian words!

Emberline is met with a tragedy immediately in the book and vows revenge on their mortal enemies. She follows the stench of the traitor back to his lair and finds someone unexpected. Gabriel finds Emberline underneath his castle that was heavily warded and is puzzled by how she bypassed it. They have a brief conversation and she leaves. She gets back home to her twin brother and Uncle. She’s still grieving but plotting her revenge with her Uncle. He’s more than he appears, crafty, deceitful and very powerful wrapped up in the pious robes of a monk. The perfect teacher for Ember to learn revenge…or is he? When the five head clans of vampire society meet to pledge their loyalty to the Don, things don’t go as planned. Emberline finds herself betrayed by the very man she trusted and schemed with. But this may work too, Gabriel and her being married to satisfy her grievances may be the perfect in. Then unexpectedly Dante, the prodigal son returns. More powerful, more angry and surprisingly more handsome than Emberline would have expected. Turns out a blood oath was sworn, a bargain is struck and a plot much older than hers is put into motion. This book has all the things you expect from this author. Amazing storyline, perfectly written to weave a tale of star crossed lovers, a little revenge and a whole lot of action, paranormal twists and turns. I devoured it and wanted more! I received an ARC of this book and am happily leaving my review. This book has the mother of all cliffhangers and I literally can’t wait for the next book!

Deceived by L.A. McGinnis, provided via The Author Agency, is a dark paranormal romance that combines vampires, revenge, dangerous alliances, and emotional tension into a compelling start to a series.

The story follows Ember, whose life is shaped by betrayal and loss after her father’s assassination. Determined to seek revenge, she creates a plan that involves marrying Gabriel, the golden heir connected to the empire responsible. However, everything changes when Dante—the exiled son and traitor to the empire—returns and disrupts everything she thought she had under control.

The dynamic between Ember, Dante, Gabriel, and Nico creates strong emotional tension throughout the story. Each character brings a different layer to the narrative, especially as feelings begin developing between all of them.

Nico stands out as a protective presence within the group, while Dante’s return adds chaos and unpredictability that continuously shifts the direction of the story.

The paranormal and vampire elements blend well with the darker romance themes, creating an atmosphere filled with danger, secrets, and shifting loyalties.

One of the strongest aspects of the book is the ending. The cliffhanger raises the stakes significantly and leaves a strong sense of anticipation for the next installment.

Overall, Deceived is an engaging and tension-filled paranormal why choose romance that delivers strong character dynamics, emotional conflict, and an ending that leaves you immediately wanting more.

4 stars! Thank you to Book Sirens for the opportunity to read this and give an honest review.

I love the plot A LOT. The books opens with Emberline finding her father, one of the heads of the vampire mafia, murdered and now she is on a quest to make the people responsible pay.

Overall, I enjoyed the enemies to lovers romance in here. The tension and yearning between them is high very quickly, but is so good. There is a tag on the Goodreads book that this is a Why Choose, and so far.. it’s not that. However, I can see where this could develop in the rest of the series (thankfully it will be complete by the end of 2026!).

There are definitely some cringy moments and word choices. Men and women are referred to as male and female as descriptors/pronouns, which was kind of odd and not my favorite.

I did enjoy the bits of Italian language strewn within the dialogue!

The vampires are depicted slightly differently here from some of the other vampire stories. They are immortal, but yet age (maybe just very slowly?). They talk of their sires as father/mother, but no talk of life prior to being turned so far. It also insinuates that the vampires can give birth and have children, which is odd to me. Are they just born as baby vampires?

If you are looking for a mafia vampire romance with a few twists (some expected, some not), but don’t care so much about some cringe, this is definitely a fun read. It looks like the series will have all 4 books released by the end of the year, and this is only book 1! Yay for not having to wait years to complete a series!

I was lucky enough to receive an advanced reader copy of Deceived. This book was so fun! It hooked me from the start and is such an explosive beginning to a new series. I found myself thinking about it all the time. It is a steamy vampire mafia romance with twists and turns you won’t see coming. There were many times throughout this book that the storyline went in directions I did not anticipate. The world building is set within the haunting canals of Venice. The scenes were set so beautifully that you could smell the brackish waters, and feel the danger and tension. it sucks you in and transports you to a world of dark political intrigue, sexy possessive MMCs and a strong willed take no crap from anyone female main character in Emberline. I am a sucker for a broody, feral, possessive dude, and Dante is perfection, but Nico and Gabe are equally *chefs kiss*. The story follows Ember as she sets out to avenge her father’s murder within the D’Immortali vampire dynasty. She takes matters into her one hands and quickly finds herself caught up in a deeper plot that has the potential to shake the foundation of the dynasty as a whole. Every player has their own agenda, and the corruption goes deeper than anyone could imagine. I found myself feeling deeply connected to the characters throughout the story, routing for each of them in their own complicated feelings, battles and relationships. I absolutely can’t wait to continue this series.

Gosh!!! What a wild ride! I inhaled this book! Enemies to lovers, hidden agendas, secrets, lies, dark and intoxicating! I couldn’t get enough. On top of an arranged marriage! This is dark so please check the trigger warnings! I couldn’t stop reading as soon as I started the first page! The plot is amazing and it kept me engaged the entire way through. I loved the mafia aspect as well. Put your seatbelt on because this is going to be a wild ride! 100% recommend! -Kerin

This was a good one that drew me in but I was not ready for that cliff hanger. Dante and emberline had a love hate relationship but man was I here for it. A little vampire checks the boxes. I can not wait for the next book. The steam was exactly right!- Tasha

Deceived is the first book I have read by L.A. McGinnis, and I am obsessed with this book and author. I loved this book from the first chapter and was sad when I reached the end. If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would. I loved the storyline of this book; it is page-tungingly good and original. I haven’t found a vampire romance that had me devouring this book once it hit my Kindle, and this book did just that. I loved the drama, betrayal, mystery, suspense, angst, and spice in this book. The anticipation alone was nail-biting and had me on the edge of my seat. I loved the creativity of the author and the world and characters she has created. I need to know what comes next in this series!!! This book is a PNR romance and checked off all the boxes I like in a PNR romance. Dante was possessive, obsessed, and a total Alpha. Emberline was the feisty FMC with a few skills up her sleeve.

Emberline was a KA FMC who was out for retribution. She was feisty, determined, and could throw a knife. I thought she was stubborn and loyal to her family, especially her brother. Dante was dark, broody, and out for vengeance. I loved their chemistry and how it was ready to explode from all the tension and angst, the banter, and enemies-to-something-to-lovers romance that grew in this book. I laughed at the banter between Emberline and Dante, got a little teary-eyed with their histories, and fist-pumped a few times for them. I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series!!!-By Brooke

Oh god! Another great start to what looks like another absolutely brilliant series. Once I picked this book up, I couldn't put it down. Housework was left, takeout was ordered, because my backside was not leaving my chair until it was finished. The only thing now is I have to wait a few months until the next in the series is released. Don't worry, I'll be counting down the days!

I love the strong female characters in these books; the men always underestimate how good they are, but they soon change their tune. They are strong yet gentle, cold yet warm, and they are empathetic, putting others before themselves. These traits draw the men around her like bees to honey. All I can say is Ember is the Queen Bee with a sting in her tail. Her training has given her an advantage; she is not a vacuous Vampire Mafia Princess. She may play the part of an ice maiden, but oh, how hot she can burn.

The story has the right amount of edge, the coldness of the hierarchy, those who have wielded power and only want more, and are not afraid to use any means necessary to keep that to themselves. Using people like chess pieces, willing to sacrifice others to get one step ahead. The alliance is rotting. Can the heir apparents get the evidence to show foul play? Or are the Don's too powerful for them to go against?

The countdown begins!!!!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
