I know which ones are starving to be understood, which ones hide their scars in designer suits, and which ones will hand me exactly what I need just for the privilege of feeling seen. I've been running this game long enough to turn conversations into currency and eye contact into opportunities.
Every move I make is calculated. When I dance, my movements speak to their thoughts before I ever open my mouth. I tell their secrets with the arch of my back, answer their questions with the roll of my hips while I strip them bare mentally.
But then there's Kendrix Givelle. A man who doesn't ask questions, just studies the way my shoulders drop when I'm tired, the way my smile fades when the weight gets heavy.
I've built my world on control. On never needing anyone to hold it up for me. And yet… one look from him, and I start to wonder... What if I've finally met the man who speaks my body language as fluently as I do?
You’ve been warned twice: “Body Count (Mind, Body & Soul) - Book 1” ain’t your typical urban romance story. Rather, this book was more comparable to an amalgamation of blaxploitation (IE: 1970’s films like “Foxy Brown” or “Claudine”) & cultural liberation films like Spikes Lees “She’s Gotta Have It” or “Girl Number 6” of the 1980’s. Regardless of the decades, these films & creators/directors were modern freedom revolutionary riders in their respective eras. Likewise, Ms. Antionette literary contribution of “Body Count (Mind, Body & Soul)” is/was the equivalent of poetic justice to a society which celebrates hyper masculinity, objectification of women & or misogyny. Welcome to revenge, reverse & or restitution feminism personified 🤷🏾♀️🤭‼️Don’t hate the playah, hate the game. Meanwhile, Checkmate♟️‼️
This was good! Nivea was a woman who was confident in her sexuality and always made sure to put her and her family first. I loved how she didn’t fall for the next man just because he was talking a good game. Then comes Kendrix, who is immediately smitten by her and her moves at the club. But to protect herself and her family, she makes sure to keep him at a distance. At least initially. Both of them are going through some familial trauma that they are scared to reveal to the other but the author does so in a way that’s very natural and made you understand why they were so on guard when it came to relationships. But that ENDING?! A cliffhanger?! I did NOT see that coming! Can’t wait to read part 2!
Niveah was so used to being in control and reading everybody else, but Kendrix came along and had her questioning a few things! I loved how he paid attention to the little things about her instead of just what she wanted people to see. Their chemistry was definitely there, but I also liked that their connection went deeper than just physical attraction. Niveah had some walls up, and I was invested in seeing how things would play out between them. Now I need to get into Part 2 because I’m not done with these two yet!
I was NOT expecting that ending. I need to read the next book immediately.
Both the FMC and MMC were stubborn, and it was irritating every now and then. But I found the MMC to be more annoying than the FMC, so I wasn’t sure if I was going to like the story…until they both got vulnerable with each other and had a very tender and transparent moment. That’s when the story started looking up. Then the ultimate plot twist happened in the last chapter and snatched my edges 😂. The author: 1 point. Me: 0. 🤣🤣
Netra Antionette has a way of writing characters that feel familiar—messy, emotional, and easy to root for. I found myself really connecting with the tension and the quiet moments between them, the kind that make you pause because you’ve felt something similar before.
The pacing worked for me, and even when the drama simmered instead of boiling over, it kept my attention. It’s a solid start, and I’m genuinely excited to see where Part 2 takes these characters. This one left me with that little spark of anticipation I love.
This was good!! Nivea is quick witted, nice nasty and knows how to play a man. In reality it’s all a defense mechanism for all the trauma and hurt she hides.
Kendrick is fine and sees through all of Nivea’s wit and charm however sometimes he just can’t help but let her games get to him.
There were quite a few unexpected plot twists in this one. Diving right in to part 2.
I'm not going to lie...............I did not like Nivea or whatever the female character name was. I just didn't like her attitude. The book was good, her attitude just sucked.
