*Thanks to Hanna Sandvig for this ARC; the review is my own.*

I’ve totally read this series out of order, but i’ve enjoyed it nonetheless. I’m sure certain things would have made a little more sense to me if I had started with book one, but I’ve never felt lost or confused.

This retelling of Red Riding Hood was a lot more fun than the original fairy tale, in my opinion, because there’s a cute love story and a lot less naivety. I liked that the book was told from both Gavin’s and Audrey’s points of view. Both of them were likable characters, and I enjoyed seeing what each of them was thinking. Audrey was really smart and a total nerd, and I loved it. Gavin was sweet and protective, though his good intentions sometimes caused him more trouble.

These are books that I’ve enjoyed reading as an adult, but I would also have no issues handing this to my 12-year-old daughter to read. In fact, I’ve put a couple of them on her Kindle and pointed out where the hard copies are on our bookshelves. I think anyone looking for a clean retelling of classic fairy tales would enjoy this series.

How it ends:

Language: None
Violence: None
Alcohol & drugs: None
Physical Intimacy: Mild kissing
LGBT: None

This is a much improved edition of the earlier novella of the same name! The author decided to rewrite and expand her earlier edition once she finished the rest of the series this is part of, and I am so glad she did, and I’m also so glad I read it. I’ve loved all the books in this series, except this one, which felt a bit choppy and incomplete to me, and I’m happy to report those problems are largely fixed.

The longer version allowed me to better appreciate the book’s two main characters, Audrey and Gavin, and their wonderful, snarky-but-never-mean banter. They made me laugh over and over again, either with their first person observations of one another and the world and their situation, or with their snappy comebacks to each other. I really enjoyed them both in both timelines. Additionally, this book features a side character who steals many of the scenes she’s in. She is incredibly funny, not because she’s trying to be witty. Just because she’s herself and is very funny as herself. She comes later in the book, and is in the faerie world. You will know who is meant when you start laughing every time she speaks.

There are two timelines. The present timeline is narrated by Audrey and tells of Faerie - how she ends up there and what happens there. The past (not super far in the past - it’s high school, where a lot of life and emotion gets crammed into short amounts of chronological time) timeline is narrated by Gavin and tells of Earth - how he comes to be here and how he meets Audrey and what happens then. And eventually, of course, they come together. Gavin gets to keep narrating here and there even after the timelines converge, which is nice because it’s nice to have both POVs.

One of my great joys in Sandvig’s novels, is how modern-day real her teen characters seem and the contrast between their fashion sense, tech savvy, and slang and the faerie world they find themselves in. I have noticed and delighted in it in each book in this series, but it really stands out in The Wolf Gate, perhaps because Audrey is particularly tech savvy and is especially witty and snarky, and perhaps because so much of the book takes place in the modern world as opposed to the faerie world. The contrast of the two in Sandvig’s books always feels so fresh and original. It shouldn’t be unique to her books, but I can’t immediately think of another author or series who juxtaposes the modern and more antiquated faerie so cleverly.

Magic in the faerie world is interesting, and who can manipulate it and use it when and how are also interesting. The connection between the magic of faerie and Audrey’s tech skills is innovative and made perfect sense.

One of the challenges this book faced in its shorter, novella state, is that it cannot fully stand on its own. It’s embedded within a larger tale told across other books in the series, and at the time the novella was originally written, the series had not concluded. This book version still cannot stand completely on its own. The characters get a Happy-For-Now and an epilogue that connects this story to The Frost Gate, the final book in the series. They won’t, and can’t get a Happily Ever After until The Frost Gate plays out. But since that final book has now been written and is out in the world to be read and enjoyed, this book fares better. It has an epilogue that does directly connect it to The Frost Gate. And readers are free to finish this book and pick up The Frost Gate to either read in full, or to strategically pick out the Audrey-and-Gavin parts if that is their desire. It’s the best ending that could be given to this book because of how intertwined it is chronologically to the other books in the series. And in reality, no one gets a Happily Ever After. The best we humans can hope for in this lifetime in a Happy For Now with positive future prognosis. To the extent this is a human story about teenagers, a happy for now is good. To the extent this is a fairy tale, the Frost Gate is right there waiting.

Review:

This was such a sweet an unexpected second chance/Red Riding Hood retelling romance! I loved getting to see Audrey & Gavin’s moments together before they were dating all the way up to their current relationship status (where they start at the beginning of the book) in bits and pieces. I loved Audrey’s snarkiness and Gavin’s love of it. I loved their quirky favorite treats (coffee & cheesecake) and seeing Gavin trying to figure out the human world to & later discovering his favorite human treat. I loved that though Gavin was a wolf too, he wasn’t the ‘big bad wolf’ character. I loved to hate the character that did get the role and I’m curious to see if the thing Audrey left with him will still be around in Neve’s story (if he’s mentioned at all). I also loved their quirky favorite new aspect introduced about this world through Audrey’s view of the faerie realm’s magic. I’d love to learn more about it and the cat character we met!

At this point I’ve read all available books in this series except Neve’s (Audrey’s best friend – in The Frost Gate) and I am soo excited to find out what will happen with Neve after what we learned about her in this book!

Summary:

(Now) Audrey never wanted to see her ex-boyfriend again after he broke her heart and acted like he never cared for her. But unfortunately her only way back home from her unexpected excursion into the faerie realm is by trusting Gavin again. Not to mention that both of them are being hunted by a wolf and the Unseelie queen’s huntsman because Gavin’s on the run from his own service to the queen.

(Then) Gavin had wanted to escape being under the queen’s thumb for so long, but in the faerie realm that’s was next to impossible when her huntsman could track him at a moment’s notice. Being assigned a mission in the human realm might just have been his ticket out, had Gavin not fallen for a human girl first. It made him lose his self preservation and he discovered too late that his interest could put Audrey in danger. The only way he might be able to save her is to push her as far away as possible.

I really love the Tir Na Nog Faerie Tale series and I wasn't disappointed in the Wolf Gate. It's no spice, fun story with characters it's hard not to fall in love with. Little Red Riding Hood is not my favorite fairy tale, but this follows the fairy tale in only key points and I like that Hanna really made it her own. l also really appreciate that Hanna's FMCs are far from perfect and that she gave Audrey a smart STEM-loving personality. Her emotions over her relationships feel true without feeling cringey or too high school. And Gavin is just so endearing and sweet; I felt so much for his character (as I do for all her tortured characters). You're cheering both of them on the whole way. I also absolutely adore Liadan and wish there was more of her. Hanna has a way of making the side characters just as loveable as her MCs.

I had read the original version a while ago and while I really enjoyed that version, this one is so much better. We get a fully fleshed out back story to better understand Audrey and Gavin's behavior. However, my only (mild) complaint is that it was a little frustrating for me to read flashbacks almost every other chapter, as it felt like the book was peppered with mini cliffhangers. I had to hold myself back from skipping ahead. The present day narrative was nonstop adventure and it's probably my impatience at wanting to know what would happen next!

This is a stand alone story, but you'd get the most enjoyment out of it by reading the rest of the series. This book gave me a much better picture of Moriath and her wolves, and what their relationship and life is like in Skyretain. There are also fun cameos and mentions sprinkled throughout.

I received an ARC but all opinions are my own.

I’ll admit it: Red Riding Hood retellings have never really been my thing. There’s just something about the story that usually leaves me feeling indifferent. But The Wolf Gate might have finally convinced me to give the trope another chance.

Audrey and Gavin’s relationship was easily my favorite part of the story. Their history gives the romance emotional weight from the very beginning, and watching them slowly work through old wounds felt genuine and satisfying. Gavin’s combination of cursed wolf-shifter, fae prince, and cheesecake enthusiast somehow works far better than it has any right to.

The world itself is equally enchanting. The autumnal forests, magical gates, and fairytale atmosphere create the perfect cozy fantasy backdrop. Even when danger is lurking around the corner, the story maintains a warm, comforting feeling that makes it easy to sink into.

The only reason this wasn't a five-star read for me comes down to personal preference. At its core, it's still a Red Riding Hood retelling, and that's a fairy tale I've never fully connected with. That's entirely a me issue rather than a problem with the book itself.

If you enjoy cozy fantasy, fairytale retellings, second-chance romance, lovable magical creatures, and stories that feel like curling up with a warm blanket and a cup of tea, The Wolf Gate is absolutely worth picking up. And if you're anything like me, it might even make you reconsider a fairy tale you've never particularly cared for before.

*NEW novel edition*

“The first time I saw you, you made me smile. The first time we spoke, you made me laugh. I’d been trapped in the dark for so long, and you were like this shining light. I couldn’t stay away from you.”

I read the first edition novella version of The Wolf Gate several years ago and enjoyed it, but I like this new novel edition even better! The expanded story, slight content changes, and addition of Gavin’s point of view are all a win for me. It’s a fun, magical, and well-written fairy tale retelling that’s appropriate for teens but still enjoyable for adults.

I like Audrey and Gavin; Audrey is kind and nerdy in the best way, and Gavin is mysterious and protective. Most importantly, he speaks to Audrey in her love language - coffee!

What I enjoyed –
+ Excessive coffee and desserts
+ Cozy, portal fantasy
+ Dual POV
+ Great world building
+ Beautifully described settings
+ Dual timelines
+ A sassy, meddling "godmother" character
+ Protective of each other
+ Forced proximity
+ Sweet, YA appropriate romance
+ Mentions and cameos of other characters in the Faerie Tale Romances Series

I’ve read and recommend Hanna’s entire Faerie Tale Romances Series! As a mom, I also feel comfortable letting my daughters read them when they are older.

This is YA fantasy, so expect the high schoolers to act like high schoolers. I didn’t find them to be distractingly immature or anything though.

Content: kisses-only, clean romance (and no mentions of s*x which is a change from the first edition); clean language; past loss; magic

I received an advanced digital copy of this book from the author and was under no obligation to post a review, positive or otherwise.

Oh my goodness! I loved this story before, but this updated and expanded version was just so good! The core story remains and the characters are the same, but there is just more insight into the characters and a fleshed out story.
Audrey was so fun! I love her spunk and courage. She was thrown into a world of magic and fae alongside having to deal with Gavin! She had a tender heart under her snark and I loved her creativity. Audrey is such fun to follow into the world of Faerie and I appreciate getting the introduction through her. She is learning it all and has such a fresh perspective with her analytical mind. It also really sets the stage for the next books in the series! I really liked getting to see more of Gavin’s POV in the expansion! We really get to see his motives and I felt like I understood him a lot more. He cared so much for Audrey and just wanted his freedom.
The story has a fun fairytale journey story. I loved the way the chapters moved between the present and the past to really unfold Gavin and Audrey’s story. Audrey had to relearn to trust him and their adventure forced them together. I enjoyed how it also gave more insight into the world of Faerie. It is a overall lighthearted cozy fairytale inspired romantasy with only kisses. It can be read as a standalone but is so much for fun within the series!

The Wolf Gate by Hanna Sandvig
Audrey's fallen through a portal... with her charming, cheesecake-loving ex-boyfriend, Gavin McKenna...

So some of you might be wondering why this review is labelled ARC when The Wolf Gate has been out for a while. But, super cool, this is a whole new version! Hanna took the short novella of Wolf Gate and rewrote it into a full-length novel, complete with backstory from Gavin's POV. And honestly, to me it felt like reading a whole new book! Audrey is still her sassy, nerdy self, Gavin felt a lot deeper than just a bad boy on the run, and the author took out that edgy part with Dylan that felt out of place from the rest of the cozy series. So, whether you've read the novella or not, I highly recommend this one! I especially loved Gavin and his POV. My favorite scene was Audrey rescuing Gavin from the evil queen.

Book 2 in Faerie Romance Series (can be read as a standalone)
Genre: Fairy tale retelling (Little Red Riding Hood)
No spice or language, mild fantasy violence

The Wolf Gate is an adorable, entertaining story! It’s much more on the cozy side of fantasy, with friendship and romance, sweet AND snarky banter, and a fascinating magical world. It’s been recently rewritten, and while I never read the original, I can say with confidence that Hanna did a fantastic job telling the story anew.

What to expect:
- Equally intriguing dual POVs (set in both the past and present)
- Clean romance and no language
- Sweet friendships
- Great characters
- Interesting world building (that isn’t overwhelming)
- Unique magic systems reminiscent of coding
- A story that develops at a steady pace
- Some unexpected twists and turns
- A happy ending ♥️

And even more! I would definitely recommend to someone looking for a charming fantasy to read alongside a cup of coffee 📖☕️

Final Note: I received an ARC of The Wolf Gate from the author, but my review is 100% my own opinion. I was not required to leave a positive review. I truly enjoyed it!

I really enjoyed this book. Audrey had her life planned out - avoid boys, go to college and not let her dreams be side-lined like happened to her mother. Falling for Gavin was not in her plans, and when he dumped and ghosted her, she was devastated. This book starts after the break up, with her abrupt entry into faerie where she discovers Gavin was a wolf. Through flashbacks to the past, we see things from Gavin's point of view which reshapes Audrey's perception of the past. I loved their adventures trying to get Audrey back into the human world and her discoveries about magic. I really loved the characters (Liadan the cait sith spellcrafter was a favourite), the snark, her red cloak, and most of all the world building. I received an ARC but this review is my own. I also highly recommend the other books set in this world - all clean fun reads.

This was a fun and easy book to read, with a bit of clean romance mixed in. However, since it’s clearly targeted toward a younger audience, I found Audrey quite annoying. She felt like a very cliché character, although I can understand why many readers would relate to her. Perhaps I’m just too old for this kind of story.

The mix of tropes actually worked fairly well, but the constant jumping back and forth in the timeline became a bit too much at times. Unfortunately, after getting into the book, I also realized that this is not actually a standalone novel, but rather a prequel to another book in a series.

I’m still giving it 4 stars because it was well written, and I can’t fault the author simply because I couldn’t personally connect with the protagonist. I’m also tempted to read the next book because I’m too curious to see how the story turns out.

I read the original version of this book a long time ago and it was good. But this expanded/revised version is so much better.

This second chance romance story unravels from two timelines, the present and the past, giving a look at both the original romance (eventually including why it fell apart) and their second chance.

Audrey and Gavin have been characters I've loved seeing appear in other books in the series, and I loved reading their story through their points of view. The story is sweet and funny, set in a world that I keep wanting to return to.

Some of the other characters that appear have their own stories in the series, while others are just fun to read on the page.

I received an advanced copy from the author for typo hunting purposes and now I'm leaving my honest review.

If you're a fan of no-spice fairy tales/fantasy, this is a must read. It's terrific! I can tell so much love and attention to detail went into crafting this story. Audrey and Gavin are just the cutest couple!

I don't know why, but I found it so funny when Calder handed Audrey a napkin after giving her some roasted pheasant for "her wolf friend". How considerate! A fun little detail!

I loved Liadan, the cait sith. She acts exactly how you'd imagine a cat/fae woman would act.

I also love how Audrey's coding skills come in handy in the land of Faerie later on in the book. Clever!!

And all the coffee and cheesecake! Yum!

This book is among one of my favorites and I very highly recommend it!

What a fun story!!

Audrey has plans. She's going to college on a scholarship for computer science. And boys are just a distraction. Until one night in the woods, after receiving a cloak from Ms. Chloe, she ends up shoved through a gate by a wolf. A wolf who turns out to be the boy who broke her heart.

Gavin is a wolf by night, cursed by Moriath. In Pilot Bay to find the missing Princess, he is distracted by Audrey. Breaking up with her was to protect her. Pushing her into Faerie was to get her away from Dylan.

Now they need to get Audrey home and avoid the Huntsman. That means getting another key and finding a gate. And working together despite hurt feelings.

A story of persistence and love. And a red riding hood retelling!

I was so excited for to read the longer expanded version of The Wolf Gate because I enjoyed the novella so much and goodness, it was worth the wait. I loved it!! You really get to know the characters better. You really get to see Audrey's genius in tech and her hilarious snarkiness/sarcasm adds humor to the story. You get to understand Gavin so much better to and really see his sweet side. They are perfect together. Some of the side characters are featured more and they add a lot to the story as well. I love how Hanna perfectly ties The Wolf Gate into her other books and explains a lot of how Audrey and Gavin's role in a later book comes about.
It was such a fun read and kept me laughing and was hard to put down!

I absolutely loved this book! I read the original version with just Audrey's POV and I enjoyed it, but the addition of Gavin's POV blew me away. Second chance romances are usually hit-or-miss for me, and I can find it hard to like both leads, but Hanna Sandvig did an incredible job with Audrey and Gavin. ALSO, where can I find me a man that both pines and protects??? Be still my heart because inaction is one of my pet peeves with second chance romances, but Gavin didn't raise those flags. Basically, I have nothing but good things to say about this cozy retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, and I strongly encourage you to find yourself a copy and read it ASAP if you are in the mood for an adventurous romp around Faerie!

I thoroughly enjoyed this fairy tale retelling. The wolf gate is well written, the characters are interesting and have depth. The other book I’ve read by this author was the lily gate. There are some similarities like faerie setting and whimsy. The wolf gate goes into more depth and is a richer story. It was wonderful to read and I was wishing it wasn’t over when I finished it. It was exciting and suspenseful and the love/romance was clean and strong.

There are some books that you simply cannot put down and binge read in one session (because who needs sleep??) This is one of those books! I got an ARC copy but these are all my own opinions. I literally sat down on my couch to read for “just a few minutes” before bed and then finished the book around midnight.

I love the new, full-length edition. I laughed and cried and laughed some more. I love Hanna’s writing so much and her books are always on my re-read pile! The characters feel
so real to me. I love Audrey and Gavin; their relationship is so fun, and his background is heart-wrenching. Love, love, love this book

A few years ago, Hanna Sandvig released The Wolf Gate as a short novella. Now, several books under her belt, she has fleshed it out into a full novel, complete with new illustrations and an updated cover.

Audrey loves to code, LOVES coffee, and loves her pink hair. She also kind of likes the look of the new exchange student from Ireland. The new exchange student from Ireland...is actually fae, and is hunting for someone he's no longer sure he wants to find.

This is just a cute, cozy little faerie story. If you are a fan of snarky FMCs, star crossed lovers, talking cats, and coffee fanatics...this one's for you.

I read the first version of Sandvig’s retelling of Little Red Riding Hood almost 4 years ago. I had enjoyed it then, but wasn’t very familiar with the faerie world of her books then. I enjoyed this expanded and revised version much more, having read more of her books in the meantime and learned a lot more about the world she writes about. The characters are mostly great (the bad guys are well written – I just do not like them). If you enjoy fairy tales brought to life, this one is a good pick!

I really enjoyed this book and didn’t want to put it down! Little Red Riding Hood with a twist. It was fun to read a familiar childhood story, but now written for YA. The romance aspect was very sweet and clean and it left me wishing the story didn’t have to end. I really liked the folklore it incorporated and the different fantasy elements. Some of them were completely unique to me and I appreciated that. I look forward to reading more from this author and I hope that this book in particular will have more books written to continue the story!

I loved this extended edition. Gavin and Audrey’s story was probably one of my favorite out of them all, but it’s even more so now that it’s longer.

2 POV
Clean language
Clean romance

It’s a fun retelling that features some things pulled from little red riding hood, but like her other ones it’s told in a way that is different than what you usually see with retellings.

If you’ve read the shorter version I would totally recommend picking this one up. Seeing Gavin’s POV gave so much more insight into his character and the story.

Yesssss read this book! 😁 A retelling of Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale, comes Audrey and Gavin the wolf ex-boyfriend (hahaha) ook so the story is well told, intriguing and engaging. And so dramatic! I love it! Audrey needs to get home and Gavin is committed to making it happen but his secrets are in the way and Audrey is getting conflicted as she starts to love the wonders of the fae world and her heart getting pulled back to Gavin. The mix with human world to fae realm and the Unseelie is just my balance for a good Fae Fantasy. Annnd ooh the book cover!! Simply beautiful and catchy!

The Wolf Gate by Hanna Sandvig is a wonderful twist on Red Riding Hood.

I loved the first edition of the book, and I love this one even more! We have a dual POV with a dual timeline, and beautiful worldbuilding with the promise of more! I loved the ingenuity of the characters, and the character growth each and every one took. I seriously am in love with all of the characters and this made me want to reread the rest of the series all over again!

If you want to be sucked into a fantasy world you can't get enough of, this is the book you need to start with!

Thank you Hanna Sandvig for the free book.

I am so much in my cozy era, and Hanna Sandvig's cozy fairytale retellings are definitely part of that. So this book was originally a novella from a few years ago, but has been expanded and updated and made even more wonderful.

You can read all of these as interconnected standalones, (I've read them in publication order, because that's how I've gotten my greedy little paws on them) though, I believe this one is listed as book 2 in the series. (After The Rose Gate.)

I can't recommend these books and this author enough.

I know this is loosely a retelling of Red Riding Hood. But it’s really original enough that it doesn’t seem fair to call it a retelling.
The world building is amazing and the characters are wonderful, and funny, and sweet, and snarky. It depends on the character and the chapter. And I love the idea of computer coding being similar to fae magic. This is a fun book that will leave you wanting to read the next books in the series!

The Wolf Gate is a charming Little Red Riding hood retelling perfect for readers in their YA phase, or adult. Starting out in high school, and then ending with college pursuits, this is a wonderful coming of age story. Of course, one mustn’t forget the fae, and the wolves. Trust me, you’ll love it! 🩷

This is the first time I have ever done a book review after getting a advance copy so I am excited.

A wonderful retelling of the Red Riding Hood. I especially liked Audrey who was a computer pro and a self processed nerd. The language was good and the humour wicked. But still I liked it a little less than the other books in the series.

I love that the author went back and rewrote this story as a full length novel. I've enjoyed all of her books but the original Wolf Gate is the only one I have a tendency to skip in my rereads, because I always wish there was more to the story, more time for the story to develop. Well, I've gotten my wish and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Great for a cozy time with some adventure still!

I received an ARC from the author. Opinions are entirely my own.
