I have been around a horse approximately once, but the way Wilks handles the setting and characters it is clear that he is VERY familiar with the rodeo/barrel racing scene. While this is not the type of thing I would typically pick up, I did find myself enjoying rooting for the underdog, even when hes got his own issues to work through. I loved the grump/sunshine pairing, Fulton is full of sparkles and I would die for her. Definitely a quick fun read, perfect for Pride month! 🌈
A great story where I am absolutely the target audience, but I do think it suffered from being too short. I would have liked to have seen a subplot being introduced, maybe around the guy who first owned Angel and threatened Cole. I was expecting that to come up again, but it never did. I think something like that would have helped the character and relationship development feel more natural to me. I saw the vision though, and I enjoyed what I read. Cole is a shitty guy with a lot of internalized toxic masculinity, so he can be hard to root for at times, but he felt realistic. I really liked Anne-Marie, and I got emotional about the ending. I look forward to what the author writes next.
