A pathogen developed during the Cold War has now been released on the world and could be the beginning of the end. Each one that doesn't die by the hands and mouths of those carrying the virus may still die in agony as the pathogen invades the brain. Those that survive attack and infection only resemble humans in form, their humanity is gone. Jim and his family try to prepare, survive, and protect each other from those infected with the virus.
J.G. has a good story line but needs a lot of editing. There is no differentiation between who is speaking and other actions. The story is very good and I had to keep reading because I was captive throughout. I will read the other books and hope they get better.
I actually started the sequel first and realized I needed to back up to get a full grasp of the plot. I enjoy survival stories and this is a great appetizer, so to speak, for the further development in the sequel. The idea of a virus being tailored for military purposes isn't a new one, but the author takes it in a totally unexpected direction. Good stuff--if you're into zombies (though this isn't a zombie tale!) or plagues and pathogens, you should give this a read.
This isn't a book, it's a few short chapters! Basically a zombie story, (I refuse to refer to this as a book) and is kind of dry. The characters are described, but they never really come to life. There's lots of action, but it would have been better if the characters had been more than cardboard cut-outs. Results: the best I can say is it's free.
I would give this book a 3.5 rating. While the writing is good, and quite engaging, my big issue is that while the title may be "The Beginning", I only expect to read about one, not three, and have all of them truly not go at all beyond the very beginnings. Potential, but the kind of thing I personally find annoying.
A FIRST BOOK BY J.G. HICKS JR, BUT DEFINITELY NOT THE LAST
A great first book, by a great new Author and this definitely won't be his last. As this book shows that it is "The Beginning" I'm very excited to see where the story goes from here and read the next book in this series.
