3.75 rounded to 4 stars for me.
It was full of suspense read,I could not get enough of characters,their friendships are for life-that's for sure.Chloe Baughman have big money problem,and the second job at the club pays good.Little did she know that working at the club puts her in danger.Ryan Strong,one of her bosses don't like her taking second job,especially at the club he and his friend suspect dealing with human trafficking.They both had a cruch for each other,and that was the time when Chloe and Ryan admit it.Very spicy,but also emotional and sweet at times,the suspense was scary and I hopend it all ends well.My first book by this author and hope to read more.
If you like spicy romantic suspense I would recommend this one.

I love this series and Direct Action fits in perfectly. Lots of emotions at play here. Riley Edwards digs deep into the heartbreak of dementia and its effects on family members. Chloe Baughman works for Ryan Strong so her fantasies about him remain just fantasies. Little does she know that he has fantasies of his own....but boss/employee relationships are not on the table. The Downrange team is looking into human traffickers and suddenly it becomes really personal when two of The Plank's employees are getiing involved with the wrong types. Chloe holds her own against Ryan and his bossy ways. She's stubborn and not the least bit inhibited by his growly attitude. Things heat up between them and I mean REALLY heat up. Admitting their attraction to one another is inevitable. Murder, trafficking, drugs, kidnapping and rich men playing games wth other's lives make this a captivating read. But, I've learned to exect nothing less from Ms. Edwards!

I really enjoyed this book. Chloe the heroine and Ryan the hero were wonderful main characters. The story touched on many things including the grieve of Chloe’s dad going through Alzheimer’s disease and all that comes with that. Including working extra jobs to help her mom pay for treatment and assisted living facilities. Enter Ryan the former navy seal along with his brothers and best friends who are also team guys. They opened a bar together and also went on missions. I don’t want to give too much away as Chloe gets caught up in a mission with Ryan and his brothers to solve the mystery of missing girls from a gentlemen’s club. The story became very suspenseful as the love relationship grew between Chloe and Ryan. You are going to need to read the book to check out how this one ends. I will definitely be reading more in this series by this author.

Ryan and Chloe are officially up there with my favorite couples in this series. Their chemistry just pops off the page from start to finish.
I love how Riley writes Chloe — she’s fierce, loyal, funny, protective, and vulnerable all at once, especially while she’s navigating watching over her dad and her mom. Ryan is the perfect match for her: protective, stubborn, and his dry sense of humor plays off hers beautifully.
Riley balances the comedic and emotional sides of this story so well, and the suspense is A+. The surrounding cast ties everything together perfectly. I’ve loved this series so far and cannot wait for the next one.

Direct Action - This was my first read by this author. Honestly, I couldn't wait to start this one, unfortunately I just didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped I would.
The suspense is the only thing that kept me invested, i was genuinely curious to see how everything plays out.
The main characters...gosh, I didn't like either character here 🙈
Ryan 🤷🏻♀️ I just didn't like him & Chloe came of unlikeable. I felt with everything going on in her life, her worries for her parents and then...just putting herself in danger...just didn't work!

Third book in the Downrange series and somehow my first Riley Edwards book! And honestly, I had NO trouble jumping into this one without reading the first two. Direct Action works really well as a standalone, although now I absolutely want to go back and meet the couples whose stories I missed.
This one had me hooked. Romantic suspense, a protective ex-SEAL hero, a heroine who refuses to sit around waiting for someone to save her, found family, danger, secrets, and plenty of spice. There is a LOT happening here, and once the suspense really kicks in, I had a hard time putting it down.
Chloe Baughman completely won me over. This woman is exhausted and still somehow keeps going. Her dad’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis has put an enormous financial and emotional strain on her family, so Chloe is working multiple jobs and doing whatever she can to help keep her parents afloat. She’s fiercely independent, incredibly caring, and the kind of woman who will run herself straight into the ground before asking someone else for help. I loved that about her, even while occasionally wanting to shake her.
And then there’s Ryan Strong. Former Navy SEAL, bar owner, protective as hell, and very obviously gone for Chloe long before he’s willing to admit it. These two have been circling each other for months, both pretending there isn't a giant neon sign flashing between them. Chloe is his employee, Ryan is trying to keep his attraction under control, and everyone around them seems to know exactly where this is heading.
Ryan's solution to his feelings? Act like a playboy and sleep with other women. NO SIR. I will admit this particular part of the hero's storyline isn't my favorite trope, especially when it's painfully obvious that he's already emotionally invested in the heroine. BUT once he finally stops fighting what he wants, watching this man go into full protective mode is something else. (but safety squad, you won't be a fan).
Chloe takes that second job at The Vault. And The Vault is NOT what it seems. Ryan and his former SEAL teammates are already investigating the club because of its suspected connection to human trafficking. So when Ryan discovers Chloe has started working there, all of his carefully controlled feelings go straight out the window. Protective Ryan has ARRIVED. Territorial Ryan has arrived. "Absolutely not, you're not putting yourself in danger" Ryan has arrived. And Chloe is understandably not always thrilled about his methods...but watching these two navigate that dynamic was SO much fun.
The suspense side of the story kept me turning pages. Chloe gets pulled into something much bigger than she ever anticipated, and the danger surrounding The Vault steadily escalates. There are kidnappings, trafficking, violence, and some genuinely difficult moments, so definitely check the content warnings before diving in. The investigation gave the story a constant sense of urgency, and I liked how the romance remained intertwined with the action instead of feeling like two completely separate stories.
I also really loved the team surrounding Ryan. Their friendships have that ride-or-die quality that makes a found family dynamic work so well. There is plenty of teasing and banter, but underneath it is this incredibly strong sense of loyalty. These guys would absolutely walk into hell for each other, and that camaraderie added so much warmth to an otherwise heavy storyline. I especially loved seeing the women becoming more integrated into that world too.
Some of my favorite moments were actually the quieter ones. Chloe with her parents absolutely broke my heart. Her relationship with them is so loving, and the realities of her father's illness add an emotional weight to the story that goes beyond the suspense. Those scenes gave us a much deeper understanding of why Chloe is so determined to handle everything herself and why asking for help feels almost impossible for her.
Ryan and Chloe themselves are incredibly easy to root for. Their attraction is obvious, their banter is fun, and once they finally stop pretending there isn't something between them, the chemistry is fire. There is definitely spice here, but I appreciated that their intimate moments also showed the growing trust and emotional connection between them.
My one real hesitation was the speed of their romantic progression. I enjoyed them together, but I sometimes felt like the relationship jumped from years of dancing around each other to "this is it" a little too quickly without real progression. It was more like a switch flip. I would have loved more time inside those emotional transitions because there was so much potential there. Ryan and Chloe had already been carrying all this attraction and tension for so long, and I wanted to FEEL more of that shift when they finally crossed that line. That said, it didn't stop me from enjoying the book. There was enough happening around them to keep me completely invested, and the combination of action, romance, family, friendship, and suspense made this a really entertaining read.
I listened to this one duet audio, and Audrey Obeyn and Christian Black were fantastic together. Their performances brought a lot of personality to Ryan and Chloe, and I especially enjoyed the way they handled the emotional scenes alongside the more intense suspense and steamy moments. The duet style narration worked really well for this story. There was a natural chemistry between their performances that made the relationship even more immersive, and they kept the pacing moving without losing the quieter emotional moments. Definitely an audio I'd recommend if you enjoy romantic suspense in audiobook form.
Overall, Direct Action gave me exactly the kind of romantic suspense experience I was looking for: danger, action, a fiercely independent heroine, a protective ex-SEAL who is completely gone for his woman, found family friendships, emotional family moments, and enough heat to keep things VERY interesting. Riley Edwards is officially on my radar now.

Although this is the third installment in the Downrange series, it works perfectly as a standalone. I had no trouble connecting with the story, and by the end, I was eager to go back and read the earlier books.
Ryan and Chloe were such an easy couple to root for. Chloe is doing everything she can to support her family, working multiple jobs to help cover the cost of her father's nursing home after his Alzheimer's diagnosis. That part of the story hit especially hard, and the author handled both Chloe's devotion and the heartbreaking reality of the disease with genuine compassion. The moments between Chloe and her dad were some of the most emotional in the entire book.
Ryan is exactly the kind of hero I love reading about. As a former Navy SEAL who now owns a bar while secretly helping rescue victims of human trafficking, he's fiercely protective, dependable, and impossible not to fall for. His feelings for Chloe develop naturally, and I loved watching him wrestle with the fact that she's also his employee while doing everything he could to keep her safe.
The romance was wonderfully balanced with the suspense. Ryan and his team are investigating the Vault, a location connected to a human trafficking operation, and when Chloe and her friend Poppy volunteer to go undercover in hopes of finding a missing friend, the stakes become even higher. The danger never lets up, making it difficult to put the book down once the investigation begins.
I also really enjoyed Ryan's former SEAL teammates. Their loyalty, humor, and teamwork added another layer to the story, while the secondary characters helped create a world that felt believable and engaging. Poppy especially stood out, and after finishing this book, I'm already hoping she gets her own happily ever after in a future installment.
The chemistry between Ryan and Chloe was undeniable from the beginning. Their workplace dynamic created plenty of tension, and once they finally allowed themselves to explore their feelings, the romance was both heartfelt and satisfying. The intimate scenes added to their connection without overshadowing the emotional journey they shared.
This story strikes a great balance between action, romance, and emotional depth. There were moments that made me smile, scenes that had my heart racing, and others that were genuinely heartbreaking. Whew chile get ready for a spicy ride with this one!
What begins as a fairly straightforward setup with an overworked woman, a protective boss she’s attracted to, and a job she probably should not have taken turns into a spicy, dangerous, high stakes romantic suspense that gets darker and more intense as it goes. And when Riley decides to hit the gas, she really hits it.
Chloe is exhausted, stubborn, independent to a fault, and taking care of everyone around her while barely taking care of herself. Then Ryan, one of her bosses and someone she's been fantasizing about for months, finally becomes impossible to ignore. Their chemistry is immediate once they stop fighting it, and when I say Riley brought the spice in this book, she BROUGHT it. This may honestly be one of the spiciest books of hers I’ve read.
But what surprised me was how much the story escalated beyond the romance. The trafficking storyline adds a much darker layer, and once things start going wrong, they go very wrong. The final stretch gets intense fast, but I thought the pacing was just right. Riley packed a lot into a shorter novel without dragging the ending out longer than it needed to be.
I really liked Chloe. She’s independent to a fault, stubborn about accepting help, and the type of woman who will carry the weight of the world until somebody takes it out of her hands. That made her feel very real to me. I liked Ryan too, and their relationship felt earned because the attraction was already there before the book even began. I do wish Riley had given us more of Ryan’s backstory because Chloe felt much more fully developed, but it didn’t take away from how much I enjoyed them together.
And I loved that their relationship wasn’t just sex, even though there is a LOT of sex. 😂 It gradually becomes more emotional as Chloe starts trusting Ryan, opening up about her family, and finally allowing herself to lean on someone else.
This is definitely for readers who like their romantic suspense fast, steamy, and a little dangerous. Just know going in that there’s explicit sex, plenty of foul language, violence, and some very heavy trafficking content. If any of that is a hard no for you, this probably isn’t your book.
For me though? Five stars. It may even be my favorite Downrange book so far.

This book has a little bit of everything that makes a romantic suspense enjoyable; danger, action, suspense, romance, protective heroes, loyal friendships, and enough emotional moments to keep you invested. It balances the action with the romance really well, and once the story gets going, it’s difficult to put down.
Our FMC, Chloe Baughman, was one of my favourite parts of the book. She’s fearless, caring, capable, and knows exactly what she wants. She’s not someone who sits back and waits to be rescued, which made her such a refreshing heroine to read about. I loved how fiercely she cared for the people around her.
Then there’s our MMC, Ryan Strong. He’s protective, possessive, a little jealous, and completely devoted once he lets himself admit his feelings. Ryan and his friends run a bar that serves as more than just a gathering place, while also operating in a world filled with danger and covert operations. Chloe works there as well, and the two have been dancing around their feelings for what feels like forever.
Watching them finally admit what had been building between them was probably my favourite part of the book. Their chemistry felt natural, and once they stopped fighting their feelings, everything just clicked. They complemented each other really well, and I found myself rooting for them from the beginning. Their banter, loyalty, and unwavering support for one another made their relationship believable and enjoyable to read.
I also appreciated the found-family aspect of the story. The friendships and camaraderie among the team added warmth to the suspense-filled plot, making the characters feel like a close-knit family rather than just colleagues.
Overall, Direct Action was an entertaining read that combines romance and suspense in a way that keeps the pages turning. If you enjoy protective heroes, strong heroines, action-packed romance, and stories with a tight-knit group of characters, this is definitely worth checking out. I’ll certainly be interested in picking up more books from the Downrange series.

A MMC who is a Ryan Gosling lookalike? Sign me up!
Ryan and Chloe have been circling each other for almost a year. He's one of her bosses, she's the only child of loving parents who are having to deal with dementia. Between her multitude of jobs trying to make ends meet and help pay for her fathers care, Chloe doesn't really have the capacity for a romance, least of all with her boss. So Ryan will stay a nice fantasy for alone time.
Well that's until she gets in a fender bender, he comes flying to the rescue and then one her part time jobs puts her in real danger. Then Chloe gets to see Ryan in full, overbearing, over protective mode. And...well she doesn't hate it all the time!
Ryan has been acting like a playboy to keep his attraction to Chloe on lockdown. But as usual everyone around them can see it coming a mile off. Watching him slowly unravel as Chloe puts herself in danger to help a friend is beautifully done. Chloe's desperation to help her mum and dad and be hyper independent means she's burning the candle at both ends and Ryan has "ways" of making her take time for herself. He might be uber protective, but he doesn't see her as weak or a damsel in distress, just the woman he loves who needs his strength and support to get through a tough time.
Ryan and the team have great banter and they love hauling each other over the coals. They also have more and more women joining the team and I'm all for that. The chemistry between our leads is palpable and Ryan is the kind of man who like to take care of his partner, and boy that man knows how to get Chloe's brain to switch off.
Some of the scenes between Chloe and her parents were heart-breaking and emotional and Poppy...OMW I am so hopeful that she gets to have a HEA soon.

If you're a fan of alpha heroes, suspense, and romance with plenty of heart, this book is a must-read. As always, this author delivered exactly what I love most about her books—strong characters, emotional depth, and a romance that had me completely invested from beginning to end.
Ryan Strong is the perfect protective hero. A former Navy SEAL turned bar owner, he's loyal, caring, and impossible not to fall for. Chloe is equally easy to root for. Her determination to do whatever it takes to care for her father made her relatable and admirable, and my heart broke for everything she was carrying on her shoulders.
The chemistry between Ryan and Chloe was fantastic. The boss-and-employee dynamic created plenty of tension, and I loved watching Ryan struggle to keep his feelings in check while doing everything possible to protect Chloe. Their relationship felt natural, emotional, and incredibly satisfying.
What really elevated this story for me was the suspense element. The investigation into the Vault and the human trafficking ring added danger, excitement, and urgency that kept me turning the pages. The action scenes were well written, and Ryan's ex-SEAL team brought an extra layer of camaraderie and fun to the story.
This book had everything I look for in a great romantic suspense: strong characters, a compelling plot, emotional moments, loyal friendships, and a swoon-worthy romance. I laughed, worried, cheered, and fell completely in love with Ryan and Chloe's story.

That’s why Chloe decides to take on another job at an exclusive club called the Vault, where she can earn a lot of money due to the crowd it attracts. Little did Chloe know that Ryan and his friends (also former Navy SEALS) are investigating the club for their link to human trafficking, as this group secretly helps rescue victims of these crimes. Ryan loses it when he realizes Chloe is moonlighting at the Vault. Eventually the guys have to tell Chloe what is going on and reluctantly allow her to help bring the trafficking ring down. This is when things really heat up.
During the course of the book, Chloe and Ryan give in to their feelings and sparks fly. You cannot help but root for this couple because they are so good together and you can tell they have deep feelings for one another. The relationship between Chloe and her parents also comes across as so endearing and you can feel the love in every interaction. This story has it all; a love story, suspense, action, and emotional complexity. Well done!

For my first NetGalley read, I really wasn't sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. This book delivered on plot, suspense, and spice.
Key Highlights:
The story hit the ground running with quick, engaging action.
The pacing was consistent, keeping me hooked and eager to see what each chapter held.
The ending was satisfying; justice was served, and the villains didn't get off easy. It also set the stage nicely for potential future books in the series.
The characters were well-developed: the FMC was feisty and tough, while the MMC was protective and hit all the "book boyfriend" requirements.
The atmosphere and world-building were accessible and easy to follow.
A strong sense of suspense remained throughout, keeping the narrative engaging.
The spice was balanced, adding to the story without feeling excessive.
Areas for Improvement (Note: this is an ARC):
My main criticism is the inconsistent POV switching. There were no clear indicators at the start of chapters regarding whose perspective we were reading, requiring me to rely on context clues. Additionally, there was a jarring shift toward the end where the perspective switched to an unknown character, and the POV style flipped from first-person to third-person mid-chapter.
Overall Verdict:
I enjoyed this read and rate it 4/5 stars. While the plot was solid, my main issues stem from editing rather than the story itself. It didn't quite grip me enough to add the author to my "must-read" list, but I would definitely recommend it to fans of romantic suspense featuring alpha military leads and feisty heroines.

Fast-paced action, romantic suspense…
This is the third book in this series and each story has brought all the tension and action you want in a romantic suspense. The latest ‘it’ couple, Chloe and Ryan, fit right in.
Chloe was struggling financially and doing everything she could to keep her parents afloat as her dad struggled with Alzheimer’s. She was trying to hold it together but three jobs was wearing her down. She couldn’t stop, though, her family meant everything to her. When she finally gives in to a job offer she really didn’t want, the ‘too good to be true’ offer quickly turned sour. Thank goodness Ryan and his ex-military crew were there to help…
There were sparks aplenty and lots of stomach-churning moments here. Human trafficking has been an overarching theme in this series, and that grim reality hasn’t ended. These are high stakes and every turn could be the last with the risks so high and the respect for life very low. Despite this grave topic, there was still an opportunity for love. Who wants to fall in love while worried about staying alive? At times an uneasy pairing, but also believable. Attraction, love, none of it comes with a blueprint and, fortunately or unfortunately, picking and choosing love is as accurate as predicting the weather. Thank goodness.

Ryan and Chloe were both fantastic characters, Ryan is the ultimate protective ex-Navy SEAL hero, while Chloe is strong, hardworking, and impossible not to admire as she struggles to care for her family while carrying so much on her shoulders.
Their chemistry was undeniable, and I loved the boss & employee dynamic, the long suppressed attraction, and the way Ryan would do absolutely anything to keep Chloe safe. The romance was sweet, intense, and full of heartfelt moments, with plenty of swoon worthy scenes along the way.
Beyond the romance, the suspense plot added tension, danger, and excitement that kept the pages turning with the speed of light. The Downrange team brought great camaraderie, humor, and action, making the story even more engaging.

Didn't expect to finish listening to this book in tears... but yeah f*ck Alzheimer’s.
Having listened to the previous book as well, I kind of knew what to expect. You don't need to read the previous books to follow the story.
The story immediately had me hooked. I was rooting for Chloe and Ryan's relationship from the start. What I absolutely loved is that even when Ryan didn't always fully agree with Chloe's decisions (without spoiling too much about what is happening) he's always there to support her. During it and after. What I also liked is that Chloe isn't depicted as some helpless damsel in destress. She's a strong woman.
The fact that Chloe's father has Alzheimer's is mentioned in the story, it isn't the main story. But it's enough to remind you how brutally heartbreaking that disease is for everyone involved.
The story has more tense moments than lighthearted. Readers discretion is advised because there are some mayor triggers in it!
That being said I thought the narrators dit an excellent job.
This book (more than the others) feels like the perfect set up for the next book. I'm really hoping that Poppy is next with Beck. Because Beck feels like such an interesting character to me with a (I'm assuming) heartbreaking backstory. I would love to see him with Poppy, since she also just went through something traumatic. I think these two characters could match each other wonderfully in the darkness that is surrounding them.
So can someone please tell me that a next book with these two is coming?

She reluctantly agrees to take a job at a more upscale private club with her friend Poppy in order to make more money. When Ryan discovers that their new case involves the very club that Chloe is working at, he fears it can blow the whole investigation. Instead, they end up working together to find out what is really going on at the club.
Chloe and Ryan’s story brought the danger and the spice! I loved Ryan’s alpha vibes and instincts! The team interactions are always a favorite of this series! This book also tackles some heavy topics, including human trafficking, so definitely check content warnings if that's something you need to be mindful of.
This was great for the romantic suspense with plenty of action, danger, and sweet and spicy moments that balanced it out. If you're a fan of Riley Edwards, then Catherine Cowles or Susan Stoker will also be great authors to check out!

I love a good romantic suspense with a hero worthy of the the tag. And I’ll put Ryan Strong up there with the best of them. Former Navy SEAL, bar owner, and protective alpha male in the best possible way. He’s been ignoring his attraction to his employee, waitress Chloe Baughman, because she’s just that, his employee. But all bets are off when her life could be in danger, he full on wants to claim her, forget all the reasons why it’s a bad idea, his baser instincts kick in and he decides she’s his to protect. The only problem, Chloe doesn’t want his protection. Even though she too is fighting her attraction to him, she has enough going on in her life at the moment without her boss telling her what she can and can’t do in her personal life. She needs the income from her jobs to stay afloat and Ryan dictating what she can and can’t do rubs her the wrong way. But when Ryan decides to go all in, he does just that, and to be honest I liked that about him. Of course Chloe’s stubbornness lands her in hot water and it’s up to Ryan and his crew to rescue her, and that in itself is a nail biting mission. I was hooked throughout the whole ordeal. Action, romance and a little suspense all wrapped up together make for an addictive and entertaining read.
