This is Jane. A little subdued. A little stubborn. A little tired of going out on blind dates with men who drive vans with sofas in the back, Jane Alcott is living the Single Girl existence in the big city. She is also leading a double life. By day, she’s a reporter covering the raucous Seattle Chinooks hockey team—especially their notorious goalie Luc Martineau. By night, she’s a writer, secretly creating the scandalous adventures of “Honey Pie”, the magazine series that has all the men talking.
Luc has made his feelings about parasite reporters—and Jane—perfectly clear. But if he thinks he’s going to make her life miserable, he’d better think again. For as long as he can remember, Luc has been single-minded about his career. The last thing he needs is a smart-mouthed, pain-in-the-backside reporter digging into his past and getting in his way. But once the little reporter sheds her black and gray clothes in favor of a sexy red dress, Luc sees that there is more to Jane than originally meets the eye.
Maybe it’s time to take a risk. Maybe it’s time to live out fantasies. Maybe it’s time to...See Jane Score.
This book was just bad. Throughout the whole book I didn't really feel like there was a plot or storyline to follow. I do have a lot of constructive feedback towards the hockey side of the book. First, I don't really understand why the author decided to call the team the chinooks when they were clearly referencing the Vancouver Canucks. They kept all other aspects of the NHL teams as they referenced by name the Colorado Avalanche, Nashville predators, LA kings, and Phoenix coyotes. I also didn't like the character names picked for those mentioned on other teams in the book, as they were just poor adaptations of actual NHL players. They even referred to the Pepsi Center, which is the former name of the avalanche arena.
The audiobook narrator wasn't terrible. I was able to increase the speed to 2x and still understand her clearly. I prefer having a male and female narrator for the male and female main characters. One thing that kind of drove me nuts was the way the narrator pronounced words that began with W.
Thank you to Netgalley, Rachel Gibson, and Brilliance Publishing for an ARC of this audiobook in exchange for my honest feedback and opinion.
This book was first published in 2003 and you can feel the 20+ year difference in romance now vs then. See Jane Score is a fun, light story that follows Jane, a journalist new to sports journalism following the hockey team who unexpectedly falls in love with the goalie all the while keeping her identity of authoring an adult erotica series a secret.
The overall pace of the book moved and you got to know the characters I still was craving a little more out of Jane and Luc. I enjoyed Kathleen Early’s narration and it seems she is doing many of Rachel Gibson’s books.
Thank you NetGalley and Brilliance Audio for the ALC. 3.5/5 ⭐ 1/5 🌶️
Such a wild ride. I loved Luc and Jane. The double life, enemies to lovers, and hockey romance hit all the right notes. Jane struggles with self-esteem but still carries herself like a boss. Luc starts off misunderstood but really grows on you. Once everything clicked, I was hooked. The narration was incredible. I didn’t even realize it was a single narrator because the voices were so well done. Super addictive listen.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sex and the City meets Heated Rivalry When I first started this audiobook, I noticed the narrative felt a bit like a time capsule—then I realized it was originally published in 2003! Once I adjusted my frame of reference to that era, it turned out to be an enthralling listen. While there is some of that typical early-2000s misogyny (that the MC deals with well), it was actually a fun, nostalgic trip back to the days of landline phones and a different kind of sports media landscape. Why I loved it:
The Tropes: This book hits all the right notes with forced proximity, a classic makeover arc, and a plot that remains realistic and grounded despite the drama.
The Pacing: The story moves quickly; the good pacing kept me hooked from start to finish.
The Steam: It is hot and real smutty in all the right places. The chemistry is palpable.
The Humor: This is genuinely funny. I found myself giggling and snorting with laughter at several points.
The story concludes with a satisfying happy ever after that felt earned. If you enjoy a throwback 00s energy and a high-heat sports romance, this might be for you. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with this ALC in exchange for an honest review. #SeeJaneScore #NetGalley #BookReview #Audiobook #SportsRomance
The story was overall okay, but the sexism and misogyny throughout the story KILLED me! So many antiquated ideals of a woman's place and the blatant sexist jokes/ideas/remarks, etc. were just not it. Made me hate the characters and what the FMC put up with. We're not tolerant of this in 2026. Puke.
