Trail of Silence
A missing mother. A mountain full of secrets. And a truth that refuses to stay buried.
When twenty-one-year-old Tessa Grady hires private investigator Sloane Merritt to uncover what really happened to her mother on a remote hiking trip five years ago, Sloane expects grief.
She doesn’t expect lies.
Natalie Grady vanished on day five of a seven-day trek through the North Georgia mountains. Five women returned. Natalie didn’t.
But when the group invites Tessa to join their annual memorial hike—on the very same trail where Natalie disappeared—Sloane goes undercover as her aunt to uncover the truth.
What she finds is a web of secrets held together by guilt, loyalty, and fear.
As tensions rise in the wilderness and someone begins sabotaging the trip, Sloane realizes this isn’t just a memorial—it’s a reckoning. And someone will do anything to keep the past buried.
With the clock ticking and the terrain growing more dangerous by the hour, Sloane must untangle five years of silence before the mountain claims another victim.
Perfect for fans of missing persons thrillers, female-led detective series, and gripping psychological suspense, Trail of Secrets is Book Three in the Sloane Merritt Mystery series—where every disappearance hides a deeper truth.
And for Sloane, solving this case is only the beginning.
Because the twenty-year-old cold case that defines her life—the mysterious disappearance of her childhood best friend, Eden Pike—is finally starting to move.
And this time… the past is fighting back.

I think this is my favourite in the series so far. Sloane is hired by a young woman Tessa to look into the disappearance of her mother on a hiking trip with several friends five years earlier. The daughter has been invited to go on the annual trip with the friends and Sloane tags along in an undercover role as Tessa's aunt.
This had a good claustrophobic feel to it despite being set in the outdoors. The stories of the friends are all too neat and aligned and when certain things happen, it is clear that someone does not want the truth to come out. The sense of danger and tension was palpable throughout. On a personal level, things seem to be starting to move on her own investigation into the disappearance of her childhood friend and also her relationship with Theo is tentatively progressing which is good to see. There is a nice sense of closure to this at the end.

Trail of Silence by M.K. Quinn has been my favourite of the series so far. When Sloane takes on a missing persons case in a remote, secretive setting, the investigation begins to hit close to home - stirring something deeper as she finds herself relating to the case in unexpected ways.
The pacing in this one was much more my vibe - I read almost 50% in one sitting because I just didn’t want to put it down. The story felt more engaging, and I found myself more invested in the characters than in the previous books.
I’m absolutely itching to know more about what happened to Eden, and I’m really loving how the relationships are developing. The friendship between Sloane and Ash is such a highlight, and the slow-burn romance clearly budding between Sloane and Theo is a nice little side-story.
I also really enjoyed the premise itself - it felt like a more unusual investigation with a very different setting, which kept things fresh. If you’re someone who prefers super twisty-turny thrillers, this might not fully hit the mark. But if you love a good old-fashioned private investigator mystery, this will be right up your alley.
There were a few small things that pulled me out of the story at times - some repetitive phrasing, the occasional inconsistency, and a few confusing sentences. They didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment too much, but they were noticeable enough to break the immersion here and there.
Overall though, I really enjoyed this one and can see the series continuing to improve. I’m definitely keen to see where it goes next.

I love this author. Slone finds missing people while never stopping on trying to solve the mystery of her best friend who disappeared over 20 years ago. Lots of twists while she helps her client. I love seeing her growth as she starts to let Max slowly in her life and finds the next step of information in each book about her best friend.

Summary:
Private investigator Sloane Merritt takes on a difficult missing-person case involving a woman who disappeared during a hiking trip five years earlier. The case initially appears to have a relatively simple explanation, but Sloane quickly discovers that the people involved have been keeping secrets for years.
As she digs deeper, the investigation takes her into the wilderness, where conflicting stories, hidden motives, old guilt, and unexplained evidence begin to raise questions about what really happened.
At the same time, Sloane continues investigating the twenty-year disappearance of her best friend, Eden Pike. New information about Eden's connection to the troubled Harding Academy gives Sloane her most promising lead yet.
The book therefore combines a present-day missing-person investigation with a much larger personal mystery from Sloane's past.
Review:
"Trail of Secrets" is a solid, atmospheric mystery that does a good job combining a standalone investigation with the continuing Eden Pike storyline.
The strongest aspect is Sloane herself. She's a determined investigator, and her personal connection to missing-person cases gives the story an emotional dimension beyond simply solving a mystery.
The book also creates a good sense of isolation and unease, particularly during the wilderness sections. There are plenty of secrets and suspicious characters, and the author does a good job making you question what really happened.
The Eden Pike storyline is arguably the most intriguing part, especially for readers who have been following the series. It gives the book a darker underlying mystery that keeps building throughout.
Overall, I'd recommend it to readers who enjoy missing-person mysteries, psychological suspense, secrets, wilderness settings, and character-driven investigations.

**Trail of Silence** by M.K. Quinn (Sloane Merritt Mysteries, Book 3) is a tense, emotionally layered entry that begins when Tessa hires Sloane to find out what happened to her mother—one of six women who walked into the woods but only five returned. Going undercover on a memorial hike, Sloane navigates rough mountain terrain that mirrors the group’s rising danger and fractured loyalties. As the hike forces long‑buried secrets into the open, Quinn deftly shows how memory and self‑preservation create multiple versions of the same event; uncomfortable truths surface as the women confront the daughter they thought they were protecting.
The book also advances Sloane’s long‑running investigation into her friend Eden’s disappearance. With Detective Morrison’s involvement and several women from the past willing to come forward about Harding Academy, this installment feels like a purposeful bridge toward the series’ final chapter. The resolution ties up the immediate mystery in a satisfying way, though it leans a bit too neatly for the messy emotional terrain the story explores.
On character, Sloane’s blunt, hard‑nosed voice drives the plot but sometimes flattens her; secondary characters, Ash and Detective Theo Calder, bring more warmth and color. I’d like to see Sloane soften and reveal more vulnerability in the next book as Eden’s case deepens; that would make her feel more human without turning her into comic relief. Overall, Trail of Silence is a gripping, well‑paced mystery that moves the series forward and keeps readers invested in Eden’s story.

I’ll start by saying I really love Sloane. She is such a calm in the storm. She is learning and growing and figuring it out. Theo and ash are always favorites. The new characters were a little harder for me to tell apart though. I think in an effort to make it easier to tell them apart, the author repeated certain characteristics at intervals in the book. It would’ve worked better if they weren’t almost the same ones every time.
The setting/atmosphere was really cool with some settings we know of and some new settings. The hike and trail was described beautifully and clearly and it really felt like I was on that trail with them. Well, as much as it can while I sit in front of my AC at home, but you know what I mean.
As for the writing style. I love the overall vibe but in each book I find one or two phrases that are repeated MULTIPLE times. In this one it was ‘That landed.’ Or some variation of that in reference to a hard truth or a shocking statement being spoken. I just wish that was in there less often.
The plot was great! I wasn’t expecting it to turn out that way but I was pleasantly surprised. I read it in two sittings.
The whole book made sense and the pacing was pretty much perfect.
Overall I am still loving this series and I’m anxious to know more about Eden’s case as well as to see what’s up next for Sloane. I definitely recommend!

This series is so good! Sloane Merritt is a tough and smart PI who is chasing an old case from her adolescence, when her best friend went missing. Sloane is also going undercover to help uncover what happened when a hiker went missing five years ago. Sloane is on a hike with the five last people to see the missing woman alive.
I loved the descriptions of nature and the story was a page turner. Such an interesting premise for a mystery book and the author did not disappoint. I love that these books have that element of human nature and areas of gray in the cases. It's not always black and white.
Less Theo and Ash in this book, which is understandable, but I missed them. They are great supporting characters. I would love to see more of them and their backgrounds in future books. So far, this series has been mostly about the cases Sloane gets involved in and very little romance.
My one complaint in this book is there are several inconsistencies that should have been caught by an editor, which is a consistent theme in this series. Nothing huge but it is annoying to see. I do still really enjoy the series. I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy of this book. This series is so interesting and I can't wait to read the next book.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It is about a private investigator who goes undercover to try to find out what happened to a missing hiker. She is also researching the disappearance of her childhood friend.
There was a lot of suspense. The author did an excellent job describing the hiking area. Her descriptions of the treacherous terrain added to the suspense. There were some unexpected twists that left the private investigator wondering if there was someone responsible for the hiker's disappearance. The author does a great job of tidying up the loose ends regarding the hiker. She provides further information on the disappearance of the private investigator's friend.
I have now read 2 of the books in this series and I've enjoyed them so much, I am going to read more of them. If you like to read mysteries with lots of suspense, you may want to read this one.
I received a free advance reader copy of Trail of Silence. The opinion I express here is my own.

An outstanding book written by one of my new favorite authors. 6 women have hiked together for a week since college. 5 years ago, one of the members, Natalie, disappeared. The remaining women continue to return to the same site each year, but this year is different. They invite her daughter to join them. Tessa does not trust these women, so she asks Sloane to go along posing as her aunt to find out what really happened to her mom.
Each woman is hiding something and is scared to reveal what she knows. It is up to Sloane to discover exactly what happened and why they are covering it up. The characters are awesome. You are following along, believing that at least one of them is guilty, but which one, and will Sloane still be alive after the discovery? Thanks to BookSirens for the ARC of this book.

Natalie disappeared 5 years while on an annual hiking trip with her friends. Her daughter has never gotten the answers that she needs. No body to recover, and the search was called off. Tessa has been asked to go on this hiking trip this year for the first time and wants Sloane to go with her as her Aunt Sarah. With no communication from the outside world, Sloane and Ash get a satellite phone and scheduled check-ins. This book had me scared for Sloane a few times because was she on this trip with a killer?
Still looking into Eden's disappearance, and people might be starting to come forward 20 years later.

This is book 3 in the Sloane Merritt PI series. I have really enjoyed all of the books so far. I have to say that I found this book more emotionally draining (but not in a bad way!) than the first two. The first two were just stories but this one actually made me cry at the end.
I love Sloane, Theo, and Ash and it’s about time Sloane and Theo admitted they even like each other for goodness sakes!!!
The only thing that bothered me was towards the end one if the chapters talks about Natalie being gone for 15 years, when she’s only been gone for 5 and it says something about when Tessa read her mothers journal, but she didn’t read it. It was read out loud by someone else. I’m sure these were just missed during editing but a little irksome.

Trail of Silence by M.K. Quinn follows private investigator Riley as she takes on the case of a client whose mother vanished while hiking a remote trail. As Riley retraces the missing woman’s steps through rugged wilderness, she confronts uncooperative hiking companions (friends of the missing woman), hidden secrets, and the dangers lurking both in nature and within the community. Quinn crafts a tightly paced mystery, blending atmospheric suspense with a realistic portrayal of search and rescue efforts. The result is a compelling thriller that keeps readers guessing until the very end.
I look forward to reading the continuation of this series.

Not doing the sequel thing
Books stand alone, BUT the real underlying theme persists through every book. This always leads to a STALL - waiting for the next one to come out, which also usually means more $.
Liked the book, not the baiting, so this will be my last. Author even says « much more coming, » as she continues writing the series -
Waiting is not my thing for books, as far as suspense plots. I want it all wrapped up in 1 so I don’t get STUCK & have to wonder how long/how much. I’m done with Sloane Merritt

Another great installment into the missing persons PI Sloane Merritt with more breadcrumbs about her missing friend Eden.
Marked slightly down as this book felt messy in places, mentions of loans that were never mentioned before or again, inconsistencies in the story at times that meant I went back to the start more than once to make sure I hadn't missed something.
Overall a good story and looking forward to the next one.

M.K. Quinn delivers ANOTHER gripping addition to the psychological thriller genre with Trail of Silence! This story leans heavily into the "unreliable narrator" trope but executes it with a level of precision that keeps you questioning every interaction until the very end. It’s atmospheric, intelligent, and genuinely unsettling in all the right ways. Sloane Merritt could very easily become my new favorite protagonist!

I really enjoy this series. Love Sloane and her good old fashioned PI investigations. The series is a mix of procedural and thriller and rides the line very well. Each story brings us a new case and a new adventure. In this book Sloane is searching for a mom who went missing on a hike. I thought the pacing was excellent. I found it difficult to put the book down once I started reading. A good whodunnit with some spine tingling elements. Great story! I received an arc via BookSirens this is my honest review.

Another successful Sloane Merritt mystery. I really enjoyed the growing connection between Sloane and “her” detective, and the case itself was engaging from start to finish. Her determination to uncover the truth is one of my favorite things about her character. And it feels like we might finally be getting answers about Eden, which has me even more excited.
Well done, M.K. Quinn — bring on book 4!
Thank you BookSirens for the advanced copy and allowing me to give my honest opinion.

Another strong effort from M.K. Quinn. Would love to see this series brought to the small screen. Intriguing mysteries with likable main characters and current scenarios. Each book has its unique mystery that requires solving, but there’s also one that continues from book to book. Looking forward to continuing the series!

This was slower than the rest of the books. Had a great twist at the end but did take a while to get there. If you like a slow build with a great ending this is your book.

First time reading this author. A solid, slow-burn mystery set during a memorial hike for a woman who disappeared years earlier. The wilderness setting creates a strong sense of isolation, and the tension builds as it becomes clear that several people in the group may know more about the past than they’re admitting. The story also weaves in a secondary mystery from Sloane’s past, which adds another layer to the investigation.
This leans more toward character-driven suspense than big twisty plotting, but the atmosphere and group dynamics kept it engaging. A good pick if you like moody mysteries and wilderness setting. It was hard to put down just because I really wasn’t sure which way it was going to go until the end. I’m definitely going to check out the rest of the series.

This was the most emotional edition to the Sloane Merritt Missing Person Series. A twenty-one year old girl looking to answers to her mother's disappearance 5 years ago on a camping trip with friends. Tessa just wants closure to all the questions that were left open years earlier. Sloane and Tessa decide to join the 5 year memorial camping trip for answers. The camping trip for six days brings guilt, suspicions and guarded truths. This was a great book that left you compelled to get to the end to find out what happened. It had me on the edge of my seat. Looking for to the next book on this series.

Trail of Silence delivers another gripping installment in the Sloane Merritt mystery series. Sloane Merritt continues to prove she’s a compelling lead—determined, perceptive, and willing to push past uncomfortable truths to uncover what’s really happening beneath the surface.
This third book raises the stakes with a case that’s layered in secrets, tension, and emotional weight. Quinn does a great job weaving together investigative elements with character development, allowing readers to see both the external mystery and the internal struggles Sloane faces along the way.
The pacing keeps things moving while still giving space for clues and revelations to unfold naturally. As the story progresses, the pieces begin to click into place, leading to a satisfying resolution that rewards attentive readers.
If you enjoy mysteries with strong investigative threads, steady suspense, and a protagonist you can root for, Trail of Silence is a solid continuation of the series.
A compelling and engaging mystery that keeps the Sloane Merritt series going strong.

I enjoyed reading the third installment of the book. Following Sloane and Tessa throughout the hike was interesting, especially when strange things started to happen. I kept wanting to find out what really happened to Natalie so that Tessa could get answers. I was heartbroken about the ending, but glad that Tessa found closure.

This book was given to me as an ARC here is my honest and voluntarily review. I enjoyed this book 📕 I like thrillers that gets you going and guessing. 3.75⭐️ When private investigator Sloane Merritt keeps wondering about her friend that went missing and still her case is not solved . She takes on the troubling case of Tessa who believes her mother vanished under suspicious circumstances during a hiking trip five years earlier . This book is fast paced, it has family secrets , buried guilt, loyalties, and fear twist plot . Great pick if you enjoy investigative fiction with psychological depth. Will continue reading the other 2 book in the series.

This was probably my favourite story out of the 3 Sloane Merritt books I’ve read. The mystery was a good pace and the characters were lifelike and flawed.
The over arching storylines progressed along nicely and I’m looking forward to the next one to see how they develop.
You don’t need to have read the first 2 to read this one, but will help with some of the storylines.
Another great read. Thanks MK Quinn
