From the international bestselling author of PACK UP THE MOON and OUT OF THE CLEAR BLUE SKY

Winnie Smith was never supposed to be that woman. She’s the responsible sister, the behind-the-scenes event planner, the one who avoids drama at all costs. So how did she end up publicly branded as the other woman—and promptly canceled by the Mommy Mafia of Cape Cod? One disastrous relationship, a missing background detail, and suddenly Winnie’s quiet life is in shambles.

Enter Lorenzo Santini, the world-renowned surgeon, feared and revered by colleagues, with zero patience for incompetence and life’s ordinary tasks. Known to hospital staff as Dr. Satan, Lorenzo needs a personal assistant—and Winnie needs a fresh start. It’s strictly business…until it isn’t.

As Winnie manages Lorenzo’s demanding schedule and carefully guarded life, she discovers there’s more beneath his intimidating exterior than arrogance and ambition. And Lorenzo begins to see that Winnie is anything but invisible.

Hey, hi, remember me? Remember I said I really don’t like romances? And yiu know I fall in love with fictional men sometimes regardless of my unromantic streak? Well colour me an absolute hypocrite I loved this, I even caught myself doing a very cutesy girly scrunchy nose thing. Yuck! 🤣

In all seriousness though, this was perfect for me, it was obvious what the outcome would be and I just didn’t mind at all, I actually raced my way through it to get to that part, then at The End I was really disappointed, not in the book but in the fact there was no more of it. Turns out emotionally unavailable Dr’s nicknamed Satan are entirely my thing 🤷🏻‍♀️ who knew?! Not me that’s for sure.

Great narration, although I did slow down a big from my usual listen speed.

Huge thanks to RB Media and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to this ALC 🎧

I really enjoyed this one!

A huge thank you to NetGalley and RB Media for my advanced listening copy of Once in a Blue Moon by Kristan Higgins.

I actually stumbled across this on NetGalley and immediately got excited seeing Kristan Higgins had a new release and then when I saw it was narrated by Xe Sands, I knew I had to request it. She always does a phenomenal job, and her voice is just so pleasant and easy to listen to.

Once in a Blue Moon serves as a companion novel to Look on the Bright Side, which I read a couple of years ago with a friend and absolutely loved (5 stars : highly recommend!). It was fun returning to this world.

This book pulled me in right away and started with a bang. I was instantly invested in Winnie and the drama surrounding her career. She’s such a likable, vibrant character. Full of personality and spunk. She made this story such a joy to read. I found myself smiling often and even laughing out loud a few times. The humor really landed for me.

I also loved Winnie’s dynamic with “Doctor Satan.” He definitely wasn’t my favorite in the previous book, but this felt like a great redemption arc. Their connection worked so well, and I appreciated how Winnie could see through to the best parts of him.

And I can’t not mention Winnie’s family. They were everything. Warm, supportive, and exactly the kind of family that gives you all the cozy, feel good moments.

Overall, this was such an entertaining read from start to finish. It’s a quick, engaging story that was exactly what I needed at the time. I’m so glad I picked this one up and prioritized it.

I’ll definitely be diving into more of Kristan Higgins’ backlist and keeping an eye out for future releases.

A different perspective on moving forward from an unfaithful partner.

I first read Kristan Higgins a few years ago, when I came across some of her novels in the Audible catalogue. They were all decent reads, but some of them shone with special twinkles that pulled me into families, drama, and intrigue that made lasting impressions and there's always a canine cutie to adore in her pages. So, clicking request on this new title was almost an automatic reflex and I'm glad I did.

Winnie was comfortable holding down her spot in the background be it within her family of overachievers or in her event planning business. So, imagine her horror when at a five-year-old's birthday the mother makes an announcement branding her as the homewrecking "other woman". She is essentially blacklisted on Cape Cod because no one wants to cross the Mommy Mafia.

It can't be true.

Winnie believes she's been involved with the love of her life, not a paltry affair, but soon the truth comes to life, and it is UGLY, folks.

Winnie's supportive family encircles her with support, but can they actually understand? Probably not. She accepts a job as a personal assistant to Lorenzo Santini a world-renowned surgeon at the top of his field. His colleagues are in awe and intimidated. A guy with a nickname like Dr. Satan can't be all bad, right? It's got to be a joke.... right?

If you ask him, he just has high expectations and for good reason, but he needs help with the day to day running of his life. A top surgeon cannot be bothered to keep his fridge stocked with kale after all. 😆

Lorenzo is likely on the spectrum although he is brilliant in his field. The discomfort he feels in everyday situations and even social gatherings related to his work come through. But he appreciates Winnie's organization and competence. She leaves flowers on the counter because they brighten the place not because he asked. These little touches begin to thaw him in all the ways he never imagined.

Winnie helps him live a little (very) little and he helps her see her worth and to stop selling herself short. When she oversteps, he overcorrects and things plummet in spectacular fashion.

What do their futures look like without the balance between them?

This was such an easy book to sink into both of these characters have hang-ups and things they need to work through. The family interactions were some of my favorite moments. Winnie's grandpa stole every scene he was in. He was truly a bright spot in his family and on the page. The romance takes a backseat to character development and gives readers more of a slice of life look at the drama and humor creating a well-rounded plot.

Xe Sands narrates and I found her to be a good match for the character of Winnie. The audiobook is a brief one clocking in at only 3 hours and 20 minutes. The quick pacing made this story feel vibrant the brevity worked in its favor.

Opposites make for interesting characters because they challenge each other to grow. Sometimes through asking the hard questions and other times its experiences that break open a box we didn't realize we had put ourselves in. I feel like reading stories like this are not only a little fun, but they make the human experience crackle with energy.

Thank you to RB Media | Recorded Books for providing an ALC via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Audiobook Review: Once in a Blue Moon by Kristan Higgins ALC from Netgalley
Narrated by: Xe Sands

Kristan Higgins could write a grocery list and I’d still show up with my whole chest. She has her own shelf in my house for a reason... her books feel like home. And with Xe Sands narrating? It’s an instant yes. Xe brings such emotional clarity and softness that even a solo narration feels like a full cast living in your ear.

💙 Winnie: The “Forgotten” Girl You Can’t Help but Love
If you’ve read Look on the Bright Side, you’ll recognize Winnie immediately ... the youngest daughter in the Smith clan. Seeing her again felt like walking back into a familiar kitchen where everyone knows your name. But don’t worry: this book stands completely on its own. It’s just that for those of us who know… it’s a little extra special.

Winnie has always felt like the one who fades into the background ...the sibling who gets overlooked, the one who blends in while everyone else shines. Higgins writes that feeling with such tenderness that you can’t help but want to wrap her up and root for her.

🧠 Lorenzo: The Man of Patterns, Precision, and Quiet Depth
Then there’s Lorenzo — Dr. Satan — whose routines, literal interpretations, and emotional rhythms make it clear he’s on the spectrum long before the book ever names it. Higgins never treats it like a reveal. It’s simply woven into who he is.

The way he processes humor, the way he misses social cues, the way he sees the world in clean lines while everyone else is watercolor, it’s written with so much compassion. And watching him slowly open up, not because someone changes him but because someone finally understands him, is honestly beautiful.

✨ Their Connection
What I adore is that their relationship grows in the quiet spaces ,not fireworks, not instant chemistry, but:

- gentle nudges
- small kindnesses
- mutual respect
- learning each other’s rhythms
- seeing each other clearly

It’s the kind of romance that sneaks up on you and suddenly feels inevitable.

💫 For the Returning Readers
If you’ve read Look on the Bright Side, the little flashes of familiarity... the names, the family dynamics, the emotional echoes, feel like déjà vu in the best, most giddy way. But again, this is absolutely a standalone. It just rewards the readers who’ve been here before.

🎧 Final Thoughts
Kristan Higgins writes with so much heart that I always feel fully immersed laughing, tearing up, falling in love with these families like they’re my own. And Xe Sands brings that emotional world to life with such grace.

I adored this book. I’m going to be recommending it to everyone.
Five stars, easily.

Guess what, readers? I wrote you a book. And guess what else? I dedicated it to you.

If you read Look on the Bright Side, you’ve met Dr. Satan before…Lorenzo Santini, M.D., the gifted surgeon who’s feared and revered by his colleagues and terrified residents. And you’ve met Winnie, the youngest sister in the Smith family—the unflappable, reliable woman always in the background. They met at a joint family gathering when Winnie’s sister, Lark, was posing as Lorenzo’s girlfriend for the summer. Winnie said hello to Lorenzo’s ancient grandmother…

*****

Hi,” Winnie said. “I’m Lark’s youngest sister. Nice to meet you, Mrs. Santini.”

Noni raised her head—she’d gotten a new wig—and eyed Winnie. “You,” Noni said in her whispery voice. “I no like you. Your face, it’s not nice.”

“Okay,” Winnie said, straightening up. “Well, based on that, I no like you, either, ma’am.”

“Excuse me,” Lorenzo said, his voice like a knife. “She’s an old lady.”

“Yeah. Rude, too,” Winnie said, unimpressed.

“How about some respect?” he said.

“I called her ma’am,” Winnie retorted.

****
And just like that, a love story was born! So many of you savvy readers immediately asked when Winnie and Dr. Satan’s story would be out. The answer is April 6th.

Beautiful setting?

Check.

Opposites attract?

Indeed.

Interfering, lovable families?

Obviously.

I was so excited to delve into the first chapter and find myself surrounded by familiar characters from Look on the Bright Side! Even better, I loved Lorenzo and Winnie’s story just as much.

There’s something about Higgins writing that feels like relaxing into a safe, warm, hug. I loved that Lorenzo and Winnie didn’t fall victim to the grumpy sunshine trope. Rather, they saw the things in each other that others around them failed to see. Winnie was wonderfully collected and tenacious, and having insight into ‘Dr Satan’s’ perspective was a gift, after getting to know him from the outside in Look on the Bright Side.

It took me a little while to get used to the audio. The narrators interpretation wasn’t what I imagined (I read Look on the Bright Side as an ebook). I soon adjusted though, and found the calming, almost drawl like cadence suited Winnie and Lorenzo well. It really captured their steady and stoic personalities well, and added to the relaxing experience of the read.

This could easily be read as a standalone, but I’d recommend picking up Look on the Bright Side first, to truely relish the characters and their stories.

Thank you to the publisher for an advance copy of this audiobook. Opinions expressed are my own.

I can always count on Kristan Higgins to deliver an engaging, character-driven story, and Once in a Blue Moon was no exception. Winnie Smith is a relatable heroine whose life unravels when she’s publicly labelled “the other woman.” Watching her rebuild her confidence while starting over as personal assistant to the intimidating surgeon Lorenzo Santini made for a heartfelt and often funny journey. I especially loved that these were slightly older characters with believable emotional baggage and realistic life experiences.

The romance develops slowly through friendship, trust, and wonderful banter, making their connection feel authentic and deeply satisfying. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Xe Sands, whose distinctive narration style worked beautifully. Her pacing shifts and convincing character voices added emotional depth and brought both Winnie and Lorenzo fully to life. Warm, witty, and quietly emotional, this was another winning story from Higgins.

I received an ARC of this audiobook from the publisher but the thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.

I listened to the audio version of this book narrated by XE Sands. A narration by her is about the only thing that could improve upon a book by Kristan Higgins. Her voice is like butter, her male voices are appropriate and charming as well. I could listen to her forever.

This story by Kristan Higgins has her usual delightful array of family members to round out a story of a surgeon who is known world wide. His nickname is Dr. Satan and that is how all the doctors and nurses see him. In steps Winnie as his assistant. Her life has turned into a cyclone after the whole town turns against her. She may be shunned in society, but she has a lot to offer Lorenzo and starts turning his life around.

I love a good story of a guy who has absolutely no intention of falling in love and then is just splattered with it, and Once in a Blue Moon is a very good one. This would be good for people who like books by Jill Shalvis and Annie Rains.

Thanks to RB Media for the audio copy via NetGalley. All thoughts are my own.

Winnie never thought she'd be the other woman. But she's been lied to and she finds out that the man she loves is married, with a family. She's shunned and loses her business.

She is reintroduced to Dr. Lorenzo Santini, who she's meet in a previous book. He is a world famous surgeon. He needs an assistant because he's in demand not only in the Boston area, but in other countries - as a surgeon and as a lecturer/teacher.

He's cold and exacting. His nickname is Dr. Satan. He doesn't accept anything except perfection, especially in himself. When Winnie comes to work for him, she steps more than a bit outside of the role he had envisioned for her and he finds that he likes it.

They form a friendship and he relies on her talents. But neither one of them is perfect...

I always get excited when there is a new Kristan Higgins book available so I was thrilled to receive an early copy of this audio book through NetGalley and the Publisher. I loved the narrator's voice and she did a marvelous job with this book.

When I tell you I love stories with an emotionally unavailable and seemingly cold-hearted man that suddenly realizes he has feelings for a woman, this is the type of book I long for. My goodness, their first kiss had me squealing with delight and sent a shiver down my spine. It was so unexpected and off the cuff I was just melting with delight. I loved their straightforward speaking manner and their intelligent quips back and forth, their banter once they became more acquainted with one another and Lorenzo's manner of complimenting Winnie without even really trying to. My only complaint was that this book wasn't longer because I adored every second.

I also really love Xe Sands audio narration and I feel they capture the characters personalities perfectly.

4.5/5. I’ll round up.
Well this is all great things Kristan Higgins. I enjoyed this book so much and am so happy to see some previous characters again. The interaction between the main male and female was refreshing. They were themselves but also became better versions because of each other. I like it.

The narrator was listed as Xe Sands. No complaints here, I know Xe does many of Kristan Higgins work, so it’s a familiar voice that pairs well with Kristan’s writing style.

I’m torn here. I think doing a labeled series would have been wonderful for this book as I loved being reintroduced to characters from previous books. That being said, sometimes people see a series, and they believe you must go in order or things won’t make sense. I understand both sides. But my personal is being a fan of series, so I wish I had that to follow.

Thank you NetGalley for the listen. Such an amazing opportunity to listen to a great author and I always appreciate it!

Review of *Once in a Blue Moon*
by Kristan Higgins
Narrated by Xe Sands
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

At first, I wasn’t sold on the narration—Xe Sands came across as a bit flat. But as the story unfolded, it became clear that the tone actually suited the characters perfectly. The more reserved delivery helped bring their perspectives to life in a way that felt intentional and fitting.

This is a beautiful romance between two wonderfully quirky individuals—a world-renowned surgeon and an event planner turned personal assistant—who both read as being on the spectrum. Their journey felt heartfelt and genuine.

What I loved most was the depth given to the main characters. Their social awkwardness was handled with care, and their lives were enriched through strong, meaningful family dynamics.

I’ll definitely be picking up more from this author.

Once in a Blue Moon is a cozy opposites-attract romance with a gentle slow-burn that’s perfect for a relaxed, unwind-with-a-glass-of-wine kind of read. The story leans into a feel-good, comforting vibe without becoming overly sugary, and the pacing works well for the tone it’s going for.

The writing is clean and engaging, with no unnecessary fluff or meandering—everything moves forward with purpose while still allowing the romance to develop naturally. The characters complement each other nicely, and their dynamic keeps the story grounded and enjoyable.

Xe Sands’ narration is, as always, excellent. She brings warmth to the story and does a great job differentiating the characters, making it easy to stay immersed in both the setting and the emotions.

Overall, a solid, cozy listen. 3.5/5 ⭐

Having already met the Smith family in another of Kristan Higgins' books, it was lovely to be reunited and follow another one of the siblings in their search for love. Although there are other books based on the Smith family, this can easily be read as a standalone.
The slow burn romance between happy-to-stay-single Winnie and misunderstood Lorenzo hits all the right spots, and their story makes for a great, feel good read about two people who learn let their guards down to let love in.
Narrator Xe Sands is always a must listen for me and one again, she didn't disappoint. Her storytelling is magical with such a lovely voice to listen to and brings so much life to the characters.

Any time I see a book on Netgally by Kristan Higgins, I automatically request it without reading the blurb or anything because I know i will love it. Her audio books are usually narrated by Xe Sands amd she is one of my favorites . This book was a win/win! I was so excited when I realized this was another book about a Smith sibling!
I love the Smith's family dynamics and every one of their personalities, but Winnie might just be my favorite. The chemistry between Winnie and Lorenzo takes a little while to ignite, but the way theu compliment each other is perfect.
If you love Kristan Higgins, you'll love this book. I highly recommend the audio because Xe Sands is *chef's kiss*

A new Kristan Higgins novel narrated by Xe Sands?!

Yes, Please!!

Many thanks to NetGalley and RbMedia for the ALC. As a huge Kristan Higgins fan, I was thrilled to get the advanced copy.

This was an absolutely delightful romance featuring characters from Higgins’ previous book, Look on the Brightside. While the FMC and MMC were introduced in the previous book, it’s not necessary to read them in order.

You’ll know right away how this romance will end, but that doesn’t take away from the experience of getting there.

This book has all the classic Higgins charm:
📖East Coast (Cape Cod setting)
📖Well developed characters
📖Big fluffy dog
📖FMC pov
📖Fantastic XE Sands narration

Tropes:
📖grumpy x sunshine
📖work place romance
📖forced proximity
📖opposite attract

Once in a Blue Moon is everything I love about a Kristan Higgins novel—sassy, heartfelt, and full of likable characters. I finished this audiobook in one afternoon. Thank you, NetGalley, for the listen!

Winnie is blindsided at a large event, and watching her world fall apart after being unfairly labeled “the other woman” was heartbreaking. Just like that, her business is ruined.

Then comes Lorenzo—aka Dr. Satan—a grumpy, entitled surgeon we’ve met before in Look on the Bright Side. Winnie needs a job, and he needs a PA.

This is a sweet, slow-burn romance. Winnie is quick to put Lorenzo in his place, and he secretly loves it (even if he’d never admit it).

I enjoyed this read/listen. While it wasn't very relatable to me, I see how it could be for others. The feeling of not quite fitting in your family or groups is a tough place and add on being on the spectrum. It was great to see someone embrace you as you are and helping you embrace some changes outside of your comfort zone. To be honest, I would've like a bit more to the story like an epilogue or just something more than let's date the end.

Thank you NetGalley and RBmedia for the opportunity to read/listen to this audARC.

I love me some Kristan Higgins and will always read what she puts out… and when it is narrated by Xe Sands?! Count me innnnnnnn!

I did enjoy this one… my hesitation with it is that it was so short that I didn’t feel connected to the characters.. there were aspects I wished Higgins dove a little deeper into so I was rooting for Winnie & Lorenzo.. also the nickname “Dr. Satan” got old pretty quickly.

Will I continue to read / listen to Higgins? Yes. This just fell short for me!

This was an enjoyable, easy listen. I’ve read two other books about different members of this family so it was fun to revisit the characters I’d loved in earlier books from another perspective. I didnt love Winnie as a main character and the way the narrator voices her made her kind of annoying. The love story was both a little obvious and a little improbable. Good beach read, I’d say, especially if you’re a fan of the Smiths. :)

This was a quick slow burn romance between Winnie and her boss, Lorenzo. She moves away for a new start after being labeled as the other woman.

Her boss is a no fuss, series surgeon aka as Dr.Satan. Her job as a PA starts blurring when they start hanging out and getting to know each other.

For a short story, it was a satisfying read with tension and sass from Winnie. I enjoyed Xe Sands narration and her ability to bring the story to life.

3.75⭐️ Review to come in the morning. I really enjoyed the flat 1/3rd of the book. It was really engaging and I was excited to read the rest. It unfortunately fell into a lull and never rebounded for me. I’m not sure if that’s because I’m not a women’s fic or the prose itself but I’m leaning towards the later. But I’ll come back after I sleep and organize my thoughts a bit more!
