this is my november review-project, so it's gonna resurface throughout the month as more astonishing successes or adorable failures are added to it

 photo IMG_0676_zpsosg8sh1g.jpg

after discovering last year that dinovember was a thing and getting excited over the idea of having a creative/crafty project to be a slave to for a month; after doing a lame water-testing attempt at one last year and after an early-aborted project with maggie, i think this is what's going to happen this year. see, this book is not only pictures of tiny hats on regular-sized cats, but it also contains instructions on making the tiny hats.

i pitch the idea to my model

 photo IMG_0677_zpspywyople.jpg

"these cats have no dignity!" she exclaims

 photo IMG_0678_zpsnnloealp.jpg

"have we just met?"

 photo IMG_0679_zpsaorf6cpu.jpg

but eventually she got sleepy and let the idea percolate

 photo IMG_0689_zpssgftfulq.jpg photo IMG_0690_zpsg8t5gtia.jpg

she took a closer look at how dapper this cover model is

 photo IMG_0691_zpsod5qygvw.jpg

and then she just fell asleep, but for cats-AND ONLY FOR CATS-sleep implies consent

 photo IMG_0693_zpsglcj3nt5.jpg

so, we're doing this.

when i was first flipping through the book, i was impressed by how calm these cats were, and also how well the hats were staying on despite head-tilts and ear-twitches.

 photo IMG_0778_zps0cmxkoyv.jpg

and obviously the only thing i could think of was

but then i found the page with the helpful hint about double-sided tape. maggie is grateful when i read directions.

i make no promises of success, and i'm going to start real small, cuz ain't no one got time to be making tiny goggles

 photo IMG_0781_zpsqtsli3v7.jpg

but i have already purchased supplies for this project and hopefully maggie won't go all naomi campbell on me.

HAT NUMBER ONE: CROWN

i decided to start with the simplest one

 photo IMG_1012_zpsnf2egfrn.jpg

but it wasn't a total cop-out, because i did opt to make the contrasting lining or whatever

 photo IMG_1016_zpsfbqbillx.jpg

tadaaa!

 photo IMG_1037_zps2gkwnphr.jpg

or not

 photo IMG_1032_zpsxf91j9fy.jpg

it turns out that maggie's superpower is flicking tiny hats off of her head with a single ear twitch. i hadn't yet bought the double-sided tape, so this was just a phase-one experiment, but it quickly became clear that maggie is not into hats. there was no head shaking or yowling or anything dramatic; just me placing it between her ears and her instantly flicking it off without even blinking-the ultimate disdain-move.

but i was persistent. (or "annoying," depending on where you're sitting) and eventually, I BROKE HER SPIRIT!

 photo IMG_1043_zpsjmmb0vuv.jpg

and she kept it on without fussing for fifteen minutes and all without tape

 photo IMG_1050_zpsljzwxzux.jpg

i knew she had it in her! #pageantmom

 photo IMG_1052_zps1ag7cuuo.jpg

hopefully, the quality of the pictures will improve in terms of "how excited maggie is to be taking part in this project," but for now i'm just excited that i got her to wear it at all.

 photo IMG_1056_zpsdgonl3sz.jpg

she was rewarded with fancy food and i think she's ready for phase two

 photo IMG_1091_zpspntraktc.jpg

at first, it is like it weighs a million pounds of shame

 photo IMG_1075_zpswalabgb8.jpg

but then she becomes best model ever

 photo IMG_1085_zpsvsa6i3ew.jpg

and even gets a little rakish

 photo IMG_1088_zpspekvbjrq.jpg

and again all without the use of double sided tape. maggie says tape is for pussies

 photo IMG_1095_zpscdbhsou8.jpg

hat number three! maggie loves to party!

 photo IMG_1134_zps5uvgznhy.jpg

until she gets too sleepy to party any more

 photo IMG_1171_zpssa2ydoak.jpg

hat number four is coming soon, if time allows. how do those dinosaurs do it?

okay, hat number four - a lovely spring bonnet!

 photo IMG_1522_zpszm8s4qgn.jpg photo IMG_1516_zpsd3xrcuur.jpg

i really thought i was going to need the tape for this one, but maggie is so compliant! i'm so proud of her!

ok, here is hat number five, but i'm going to take a better picture later when she's not so sleepy, 'cuz i feel like this is cheating.

 photo IMG_1674_zpsuvm7pcuj.jpg

this is slightly less cheaty

 photo IMG_1687_zps8hoorecp.jpg

and this is downright legit!

 photo IMG_1696_zps9f6hxjty.jpg

hat number 6, y'all!

i don't think maggie was a fan of this hat even though it has a rad pom pom. she is hanging her head in shame

 photo IMG_1731_zpslpafqoeu.jpg

and glowering

 photo IMG_1741_zpsgbdvmart.jpg

and then pretending to be in a coma. again.

 photo IMG_1740_zpspxuqeftn.jpg

here is where my dad's cats (and a dog!) wearing these hats can be seen: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

happy thanksgiving, maggie!

 photo IMG_3702_zpsygghtprx.jpg

turkey attack!

 photo IMG_3694_zpshl5rknms.jpg

she is really making that glower work for her!

 photo IMG_3682_zpsfulliw2d.jpg photo IMG_3680_zpsnvulae3v.jpg

s'up, girl?

 photo IMG_3674_zps7vsegqqo.jpg

the sleepy pilgrim

 photo IMG_3495_zpsawrf8vjk.jpg

this is my least-favorite hat so far. my glue gun got away from me, so the seams aren't perfect, and the propeller doesn't spin or anything, so it's all just fashion over function.

 photo IMG_3751_zps1lxisgum.jpg

no wonder it put maggie to sleep.

 photo IMG_3719_zpsij2v5f7j.jpg

arrr maggie is a pirate!

 photo IMG_3842_zpsu83fwxeu.jpg

and-yes-it is reversible

 photo IMG_3841_zpsxq7rjldv.jpg

and lined

 photo IMG_3834_zpsmabib1ty.jpg

this bootsy collins monstrosity is maggie's least favorite, i think.

 photo IMG_3782_zps5fxrucop.jpg

which is fair. it's a lot of hat.
 photo IMG_4031_zpsygkqqu2p.jpg

but if anyone's gonna rock it, it's maggie

 photo IMG_4048_zps6nq6pupu.jpg

lest anyone think maggie is not into this project-observe! she totally ambled over and flopped onto my pen and notebook which is perfect for this dapper fedora. i appreciate the model input!

 photo IMG_4068_zpskhqyeuvz.jpg photo IMG_4070_zpskr3ajdnu.jpg

this is it, guys! maggie has officially graduated from my dinovember project!

 photo IMG_4071_zpsmbcgyew8.jpg

and i could not be more proud! especially because i never used tape even once!

 photo IMG_4352_zpszbqvm4zr.jpg

see you next year for something else!

tiny cats hats, vacation edition!!!!

AND ALSO CHRISTMAS! (because there was no more room on my other tiny hats on cats review)

 photo IMG_1843_zpsrotj363n.jpg

okay, so i have decided to make a separate "review" for this instead of just updating the tiny hats on maggie review because i know what'll happen: i'll run out of room and become enraged like monster. it's for the best anyway, since maggie doesn't play well with others. so tadaaa i present a story called:

SIX HATS SEVEN CATS

i was at my dad's house all last week, helping him pack up to move and i figured if i'm gonna be doing all sorts of manual labor, i deserve some fun. and what could be more fun than chasing his seven cats all around the house and putting tiny hats on them?? this is rhode island, after all, the land of tiny things.

it took some persistence, and i was definitely regretting not having brought my (still unused) double-sided tape with me. these cats don't know me as well as my dear maggie does, and they've probably never had anyone try to put tiny hats on them before, so their caution was totally understandable. here are the best of the pictures, but there are hundreds of outtakes, so if anyone ever wants to make a book called "cats sniffing apprehensively at tiny hats" or "tiny hats falling off of the heads of cats," drop me a line, cuz i've got plenty of material.

please excuse the mess and packing kerfuffle. or don't, whatever, it's not my house!

NOTE: i know i said there were seven cats, but i beneficently granted rusty a medical exemption, since he'd just had surgery and had stitches all over his ear.

 photo IMG_1871_zpso2is8igb.jpg

but we can pretend!!

 photo IMG_3373_zps5ke2gqtj.jpg

and here are the uninjured cats, in their varying degrees of cooperation

harry

harry is the christy turlington of cat models; he's pretty, he's sweet, and he doesn't hiss or scratch. he's also the prettiest of all my dad's cats, so he's probably eager to show off his good looks to the world.

 photo IMG_2117_zpsjlo8er87.jpg

 photo IMG_2115_zps72j9z6ww.jpg

 photo IMG_1865_zps7o0bshxc.jpg

annie

annie is so lovely - very nearly as pretty as harry, and she looked good in every single hat. unfortunately, she was late to the game of compliance, so we only had one successful photo session late in the week. and i thought it went great! but, while the pictures were crisp and sharp on my camera, they got darker once i slapped them onto photobucket, and many of them are too dark to post. it's a shame, because she's got a great face for hats.

 photo IMG_2844_zps0fblrm3h.jpg

 photo IMG_2841_zpscqripu2q.jpg

 photo IMG_2824_zpsyd4kpy06.jpg

 photo IMG_2838_zpslp8hey4i.jpg

you will note she is also lying on the book i was reading because - cat

 photo IMG_2832_zpskneglukz.jpg

 photo IMG_2821_zpsjbmgwiwq.jpg

nicky

nicky is a lovely, lazy beast. she was on board with the project right from the beginning, probably because in order to resist, she would have had to move, and who's got the energy for that? the only problem with her is that she's a vocal cat, even when she's not wearing hats, and sometimes her good-natured yowls would cause the hats to fall off and roll away.

 photo IMG_1900_zps55ilf7ep.jpg

 photo IMG_1854_zpsj0vpln6y.jpg

 photo IMG_1851_zpsxvdxvvjj.jpg

lucy

considering lucy used to hiss and swat at me if i even passed her in the hall, i think this is a pretty positive development in our relationship. i didn't get too many opportunities to plop hats on her, cuz she's a "find a hidey hole to take a nap in" kind of cat, so i didn't see her too much, but we still had a moment of sartorial triumph.

 photo IMG_2403_zpswuwj8kug.jpg

 photo IMG_2402_zpsyfincwva.jpg

 photo IMG_1912_zps4sq0pt1k.jpg

simba

simba is another handsome male model, whose coloring works with many different hats. he was all business, and didn't throw any diva tantrums or make unreasonable requests.

 photo IMG_2485_zpsq10qmghn.jpg

 photo IMG_2482_zps5zebh8uf.jpg

 photo IMG_2480_zpsdsyrifnv.jpg

 photo IMG_2417_zps5ffqyhuo.jpg

 photo IMG_2412_zpszzn7extt.jpg

 photo IMG_2410_zpsevbmbfjn.jpg

grace

simba's sister grace was the only one i was never really successful with. her ears are very close together, so it's hard to get any hat to sit nicely and comfortably, and she's also pretty frisky and curious, so she was always like WHAT'S THAT ON MY HEAD?? IMMA LOOK AND SEE!!! and the twitching would topple the hat off, so it was pretty challenging. there are lots of pictures of grace investigating the hats once she knocked them on the floor, and i got a bunch to ride her back like she was a pony, but overall, she was like some coked-up young thing you don't ask back to your photo shoot.

 photo IMG_2221_zpsgv1kcl9g.jpg

as a bonus, here is cooper the dog in a tiny hat! he looked pretty dashing in it, but when it inevitably fell off, he tried to eat it. since eating - whether it be of the garments or of food in general - is a modeling no-no, i think cooper is prolly gonna need to keep his day job. which is being adorable.

 photo IMG_2461_zps67lfzht7.jpg

and that is the vacation edition of tiny hats on cats!! the maggie edition will continue in the original review space, for those of you who need more of a cats in hats fix.

here is christmas!! for miriam!

which is just an extended version of my christmas status update but it's not like internet is ever going to have TOO MANY CATS!

so meowy christmas to you all!

Adorable cats with hats! I’m not sure if either of my cats would wear these delightful creations, they might be more interested in playing with them, but it was fun to browse and choose a few that would suit their personalities. Simple instructions with pictures to guide you make crafting these tiny hats an easy and fun way to add a little pizzazz to your cat’s life.

The hat is not tiny, but Penny feels fancy nonetheless.

Actually she was pretty darn mad that she had to wear the birthday hat, but she got a special treat afterward, so I think I'm forgiven. Happy 2nd birthday Penny Pen Cat!

And I will buy this book and use it to make you and Chloe tiny hats.

Well. This is an amusing book. I liked it quite a bit and smiled quite a bit throughout. Oh, I don't know why! With the Paris and Kenya bombings shaking the world up, maybe you just need a book like this to escape with? (You don't?)

But let me get this out of the way first: I mean, why would humans put tiny hats on cats and assume that said cats would feel more special wearing them?! It has an tinge of circus manipulation of animals to serve human needs about it. And reminds me of my kids who play inappropriately with cats, wrestling them, throwing balls to try and force them to fetch, dressing them up like dolls, and so on.

Is it really so different than the immensely popular Anne Geddes's photographs of babies as vegetables, or those dogs photographed in human clothes and postures that everyone adored just a few years ago, by William something? It's bizarre, no doubt, and I know you think am taking it all a bit too seriously.

But what of our internet obsession with Grumpy Cat, endless funny cat videos and sappy pics of them on Facebook. . .

Okay, I got that off my chest and want to let you know that I realize this book is being a bit ironic and silly. A bit. Because generally Ellis plays it straight with dozens of pages of photographs of his two cats wearing immaculately designed tiny hats, adding sections on how to make your own identical versions of the hats, and so on. It's insane!! And therein lies its smart humor, I think. It's just funny that he puts together this elaborate, glamorous book about cats in hats. And you know what, if you have a cat, you will adore this book. You just will.

Oh! Dr. Seuss's Cat in the Hat! Oh, never mind. . . I don't know what the connection is there, necessarily. . . but it just came into my head. . . maybe as randomly as this project came into his head.

Anyway, the whole family is bent over it as I write, just loving this strangely adorable book for slightly different reasons than I like it, maybe.

I fear now for Hermione, our two year old cat, and what indignities she will have to suffer in the near future. . .

Easy (seeming) instructions, great pictures of cats in tiny hats (hence the book title), and very few and easy to obtain tools (if you’re a crafter you already have them all and then some).

I’m not a crafter so I only have scissors and a pencil and I don’t feel like investing in craft paper and some kind of glue. So, alas, Oskar and Emma escape the indignity of tiny hats. Even though Oskar would look quite dapper in a top hat and Emma would make a fantastic Valkyrie despite neither of them being a cat. Maybe one day...

And adorable bios of the models at the end of the book! Awww!

Additional note: glancing through the reviews of this book, I noticed there are several librarians who reviewed this book and attempted creating tiny hats and photographing them on their cats’ heads. 😂

Pretty much exactly what the title promises. Tiny hats that are on cats. And boy, is it cute.

I'll admit I didn't read the instructions all that thoroughly (I'd be missing fingers if I attempted to put a hat on my cat), but all the hats depicted have step-by-step pictures and instructions so that you can make hats for your own cats.

I love this book. It is hilarious and cute, all bundled into one. It's a must for cat lovers. And, if you enjoy doing fun things with your cats you'll enjoy the patterns to make many fun hats for your own cat(s). I won this through the Goodreads Giveaways, and it's definitely one of my favorite wins!

This book is all kinds of adorable. Even if you don't plan to make any of the hats (which I don't, as neither I nor my cats have enough patience for such delicate arts), it's worth thumbing through for the pictures and the cat models' stories.

I'm giving this book ALL THE STARS because the idea behind it is just crazy enough to be brilliant. I realize a lot of people don't know this book doesn't have a lot to read, it really is just a collection of photos (most of them from the author's instagram and one specially dedicated to tiny hats on cats) and a long list of instructions to make different types of little hats to annoy your cat with.

I must say that when I first ordered this I was really excited, but when I actually received it my first thought was "What is wrong with me? Tiny hats... on cats... ? Why?" I even put it away for a while... but after making a couple of them I can safely say: WHY NOT! My cat doesn't love them, obviously, but they're fun to make even if you're feeling kind of stupid while you're at it.

Here are my results from this weekend:
pensé que no iba a ser tan divertido pero si fue... (I didn't think it'd be this fun) #TinyHatsOnCats

I don't have a cat to put tiny hats on, but if I did, I'd be making these! The squirrels run away when I open the door to feed them, so I don't think they'd stick around for a hat fitting. And my koalas saw me reading this and are giving me "Don't even think about it" glares. Oh well. It was still fun to read.

So...this is pretty much the best book ever published. Hands down!!

But Alissa, you argue, Upon which literary standards are you basing that statement?

Did it spend 60 weeks at the top of the New York Times Bestseller List? you ask.

No, not to my knowledge, I reply

And was it at least nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature?

No...

Did it win any awards? At all?

Um....

Did anyone of literary prestige give it a positive review? Perhaps Stephen King or Oprah?

Uh...

And does it possess any literary merit at all?

Well....

Then how can you, as a scholar and a librarian, make such a grandiose statement about this book when you have no evidence on which to back said statement?

Because, I say confidently. Because it's filled with pictures of CATS wearing tiny paper HATS!!

And that, my Goodreads friends, is a counterargument not even the most hardened and nit-picky literary expert can refute. Because, as the Internet has repeatedly taught us, we ALL know the power of Cat Pictures. There have even been scientific studies showing that spending even a small amount of time looking at cat pictures or watching cat videos can calm the mind and increase productivity. I mean, how many of you out there can honestly say you haven't at least once in your life paused in your zombified scrolling to admire pic of a Chonky (or Smol) kitty? How many have never forwarded (or even read) a Cat-Themed meme? Can I get a show of hands, please?

(You there, in the back with your hand raised. Yes, YOU! You're a liar. Hang your head in shame)

But back to this being the Best Book Ever... because it totally is. This book made my day. I spent a pleasant time just browsing...and I'm sure I had a huge grin on my face the whole time. The kitties are adorable and the hats... That's some serious creativity right there! I love the backstory too. And the fact that the author was able to get the pictured cats to sit still long enough to snap the photos... That's some serious Cat Whisperer Skills too!!

I mean, if I tried to put a tiny hat on MY cats?

Gizmo may allow it. After all, this cat's trust in me runs so deeply I can vacuum without eliciting so much as an ear twitch or yawn.

As for Lilo... I won't go into graphic, bloody detail, but... well... Let's just say you'd probably be reading about the fallout in your Newsfeed (in between the cat memes, of course)

Adam Ellis (2015) TINY HATS ON CATS
London. Sphere

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 out of 5 stars

The sleeve reads, "Last autumn, writer and illustrator Adam Ellis adopted a little three-legged kitten named Maxwell. They don't know how he lost his limb, but Adam assumes it was a shark attack, like that surfing girl in Hawaii. (Just kidding.) One day, after coming across a pack of coloured paper, Adam started crafting tiny hats for Maxwell and posting pictures of them on Instagram. People loved it so much that he made another one, and another. Before long, he had made a few dozen and they exploded in popularity-Adam's hats were featured on The Huffington Post, E!Online, Buzzfeed UK, Jezebel, Reddit and more! Now, Adam is sharing his designs with the world so that beloved cats everywhere can share in the fashion craze that is sweeping the internet. The book will feature about 35 hats in total, organised in order of difficulty from easiest to make to hardest to make."

Darling!!!

This is a great book for ideas. The author has a fantastic imagination And some beautiful design ideas. It would not be hard to take these patterns and size them up and make them in felt, or other materials. I can see the potential. I want to make some of these and put them on social media because they are just too cute for words. The author has given some great illustrations And it told us, in detail, how to make the hats and the decorations that go on them. This is a great book. It is worth the expense because it is that joyful. You can take these patterns and make all kinds of things from them. If you wanted to make these hats after you've sized them up for your children for Halloween it would be perfect. You could interpret them in crochet, or felt, or plastic.

When it comes to the delightful absurdity of these fancy cats in hats this book is a clear 5/5. The hat styles are exquisite and charming; any cat would indeed feel fancy wearing such masterpieces. My only (rather minor) gripe is that I've always had difficulty using hot glue with paper... I wish I could get the beautiful, crisp results that are exhibited in the photos, but I always struggle with gluing paper at right angles whether it is with a hot glue gun or by other means. Perhaps it's unfair of me to deduct a star for such a minor detail that is ultimately due to my own ineptitude rather than the instructions themselves, but I am frustrated that my efforts resulted in hats that were less than fancy! My cats deserve fancy hats!

This is more of a crafts book than a "reading" book, but still, I finished it and I even made a hat! Well, I made a hat from a design online. There are some patterns in the book, but I could not find a new copy, so I ended up with this Kindle Edition. Which would have been fine, except the link to the patterns does not work, and evidently this has been an issue for quite some time, according to other reviews. The hats are cute, but the photos and descriptions are a little bit skewed on my Kindle. I had higher hopes. Maybe that sounds strange, but I foster kittens and cats and had hoped to make a little wardrobe of props for photo shoots. Again, only strange if you don't enjoy seeing pictures of cute kittens in hats (and if this is you, what the heck, man?).
