An unusually focused entry in the Lost Civilisations series, which leaves room for both the archeological discovery and the reconstruction of its Life & Times.

This is a really good introduction to Pompeii and Herculaneum. Providing a general background of the two cities and giving a detailed account of the discoveries that had been made there (as of the date of publication in 1992), this will definitely be useful in the paper that I am currently writing.

Some of the photos in this volume are stunning - "The Hour of Death" and the aerial shot of the ruins with Vesuvius looming in the background - but the written material doesn't stand up for 150 pages.

Archaeology is thought of as a quaint pursuit, and Pompeii is considered by many to be old news. This book makes it interesting and new. The pictures are vibrant and colorful. It is awesome!
