For years, Wellmy Ernest has made her half-sister Iora’s life a living nightmare. She forced Iora to obscure her beauty, treated her like a servant, and even stole her fiancé. Their own father and his second wife joined in on the torment, cruelly confiscating Iora’s belongings and forcing her to live in a cold, drab detached building. Now that Iora has turned eighteen, Wellmy is ready for the final marrying her off to Aides Ormirage, the handsome yet heartless mage lord. Tonight, at last, her brilliant scheme will reach its climax at the banquet held by Aides himself. Yet as the villainess prepares for her final act, she is acutely aware that all that awaits her is her own doom.
At its core it is a fairly well thought out albeit typical villainess story with potentially interesting characters with a focus on the villainess and not the good natured heroine. The fact that it is not an isekai, there is not a reverse harem nor that all the man are handsome does set it apart to some extent. Although I am well aware it is a bit odd to like a story for what it is not.
The main reason why I struggled with it though was that for the most part people tell what happened through conversations, kind of describing the story instead of living through them as they happen. The benefit is that you get to see the story from different perspectives, but it also removes much of the tension, wonder and makes it a lot harder to get a feel for the characters. I think I would have preferred to see the MC do all the plotting instead of hearing about it long after the fact. The fact that title is a bit misleading or that there is a bit of an age cap between the MC and the love interest (although I don't remember it being ridiculously big) are somewhat irritating, but not entirely unexpected in this sub-genre.
All in all, it was a decently entertaining read, certainly not outstanding, but you could do worse if you are desperate for a villainess story. I am curious why it is a volume 1, because it is most definitely a finished story and as such I am both curious and don't have much hope for any potential sequel.
Sorry to say this will not be a story I finish. I do like stories with a premise of it being not what I expected but I also felt like there were no stakes.
If you like romance and only the romance part I'm not sure you will like this. Our main characters doesn't interact in anyway romantic until almost 40% through and by that point I was just wishing something would happen.
I didn't like it because they took all these opportunities for us to dvelve deeper into our main characters dilemma and anguish as she has to play the villian and just instead gives us exposition dump.
It's not the book for me and I felt it was boring as heck in the end. It got worse when after 45 % we just shift the story back and onto the male characters view point. Which is just annoying to me.
Sadly can't not finish this but just gonna hope it finds its intended readers
