मेरो गाउँको बजारमा एक जना दिदीको ‘फेमस’ खाजा पसल छ । खाजा पसल बरपिपलको रुखमुनि त्रिपाल टाँगिएर बनेको भए पनि दिदीको खाजा प्रसिद्ध छ । यही प्रसिद्धिबीच मैले काठमाडौंबाट आएको एक साथीलाई दिदीको पसलमा लिएर गए, एकै छिन उभिएपछि बसेर खाने पालो आयो, खाजा मगायौँ, खाजा पनि आयो ।

“यो के हो ?” खाजाप्रति खिन्न देखिएको मेरो साथीले बटुको समात्दै भन्यो ।
“चना, केराउ, अलिकति त्यसैको रस र मुरै,” मैले सरल उत्तर दिएँ ।
“अनि यही हो त फेमस ?” साथीलाई मेरो उत्तर चित्त बुझेन ।
‘कथान्त’ बाट शुरु भएको अमर न्यौपानेको ‘पानीको घाम’ पाँचौ कथासम्म पुग्दा पनि झिँजै लागिरह्यो । जाबो चना, केराउ र मुरैको खाजा पनि फेमस हुन्छ ? ती दिदीको खाजाको विषयमा मेरो साथीले गरेको टिप्पणीजस्तै ।
मैले मुन्टो हल्लाएर साथीलाई खान इशारा गरे । आफू पनि कपाकप खान थालेँ । एकै छिनमा दिदीले बटुकोमा हाल्न रातो झोल ल्याइन् । मैले 'अलिकति' को इशारा गरेँ । दिदीको डाडु साथीको बटुकोतिर सर्‍यो । साथीले नबुझेजस्तो गरेर मतिर हेर्‍यो ।
“दिदीको खाजा फेमस बनाउने झोल, खुर्सानीको झोल,” मैले व्याख्या गरेँ ।
ऊ अन्कान्उँदै थियो, मैले दिदीलाई उसको भागमा पनि झोल हाल्न इशारा गरेँ ।
झोल हालेको एकै छिन मात्रै के भएको थियो, साथी पीरोले रातोपिरो भयो । तर खान छोडेन । एकै छिन पनि बिसाएन । यताउता कतै नहेरी धमाधम खान थाल्यो ।
‘चुकुल’ र ‘ईश्वरसँग मुद्दा’ कथासम्म आइपुग्दा दिदीले खुर्सानीको झोल थप्नुभयो, अलिकति मीठो लाग्यो ।
खाजा सकिएको थिएन, मुरैमा ढुङ्गा रहेछ क्यार, दाँतैमा लाग्यो, नमजासँग । ‘हरियो प्रेम’ र ‘हिँडीरहेको बाटो र कुरिरहेको रुख’ पनि त्यत्तिकै सपाट थिए, अगाडिका कथाले दिएको मिठास खल्लो भयो, एकाएक । त्यसपछिका कथामा भने दिदीको खुर्सानीको झोलले स्वाद बढाउँदै लग्यो, साथी र म दुवै मजा लिँदै खाँदै थियौँ । खाजा तुरियो, पेट भरियो, मन अघाएन ।
‘दिदीले के हाल्नुहुन्छ यो झोलमा, खुर्सानीबाहेक ?’ साथीले सोध्यो ।
दिदीले बेलीबिस्तार लगाइन्, तर शायद केही मुख्य कुरो लुकाइन् । कि त आफ्नो कलाशिल्पको व्याख्या उनले गरिनन् । यी सबै चीज मिसाउँदा पनि हामीले यस्तो झोल बनाउन सकौँला त ? अहँ, मरे नि सकिन्न ! दिदीको खाजा त्यसै फेमस भएको होइन, अमर न्यौपाने त्यसै सबैका प्रिय लेखक भएका होइनन् ।
अन्तिम कथा ‘कथारम्भ’ आइपुग्दा, न्यौपानेले सबै पात्रलाई एक एक गर्दै जोडे । पानीको घामको अर्थ लगाए, दर्शन र समाज कथनमा मिसाए, र मीठो बिट मारे । अब भने खुर्सानीको झोल नहाली शुरुमा चाखेको खाजा पनि साथीलाई मीठो लाग्यो । ए हो त, त्यसरी नचाखेको भए, पछि कहाँ यसरी मीठो हुन्थ्यो होला त ?
कुनै कुनै चना, कुनैकुनै केराउ त डढेका थिए, तर कुनैकुनै मात्रै । न्यौपानेले राम्रैसँग केलाएर चना पकाउन हालेको भए पनि, एकाध शब्द जस्तैः ‘जाती वा जातीय’ (जाति वा जातिय हुनुपर्नेमा, पृ. २२३), ‘वीभत्स’ (बीभत्स हुनुपर्नेमा) जस्ता त्रुटिहरू नहेर्ने हो भने, न्यौपानेले राम्ररी नै केलाएका हुन् चना र केराउ ।

साथीले खाजा खाएसकेर एक गिलास पानी तनतनी पियो अनि एकै सासमा भन्यो, ‘साँच्चै फेमस हुने ठाउँ रहेछ ।”
मैले ‘पानीको घाम’ लाई मेरो किताब राख्ने माचमा अगाडि राखेको छु, सधैँ टल्किइरहने गरी ।

एउटै एउटै खालको परिवेश भित्र बाँचेका फरक फरक कथाहरुले अन्त सम्म पाठकलाई बाँधेर राख्न सफल भएका छन् | दुख र पीडा भित्र रुमलिएका पात्रहरु कठोर र मृत जीवन बाँचेर पनि जीवन्त छन् |

In this book the author tries to highlight Nepalgunj and its people. the author tries to studies the deep rooted ties between the people and Nepalgunj. Moreover, he tries to showcase the social relationship, culture and rituals,economics,politics and religion in this area.

Actually change my perspective about writing. An inspiring book that shows the importance of character and story.

I loved all the characters. I loved how every character has a different story to tell and how everyone faces problems in their day-to-day activities.
At first, I did not quite get what the topic is about. Because there are many stories within a single novel I had no idea about the topic's relation with the characters that are in the story.
Later I realized that every story had common topics. And that is difficulties faced by each character.
When there is a sun (Gham), then the water (Pani) faces many difficulties. The water faces difficulties because it evaporates into the air, disappears, and then loses its existence in the environment.
Similar to the case scenario, every character (can be related to water, pani) in the novel has some form of difficulties (sun, gham), which has the capacity to destroy the existence of that character.
Overall the novel was fun to read. I really enjoyed it.

अमर न्यौपाने कै "सेतो धर्ती" उपन्यास बाट साहित्य रचना पढन सुरु गरेको थिए। आज पानीको घाम पढेर उहीँ लेखको लेखाईले दिएका भावानाहरुमा हराइरहेको छु। नेपालगन्ज गएरै कथा लेख्छु र २ महिना भित्रै लेक्छु भन्ने अठोट देखेर म अलि अचम्मित छु।

अमरजीले पात्र पनि यस्ता छान्नु भएको छ जसको समाजमा त्यति धेरै कुरा हुदैन।  उनीहरुको मेहेनत र उनीहरुले गरेका संघर्ष पक्कै पनि उदाहरण दिन युक्त छ्न, जस बाट हामीले पनि प्रेणा लिन सकिन्छ।

हाम्रो देशमा धेरै सुल्फी र कामिनी , प्रेमपता र अन्य कयौं पात्रहरु छ्न जो माटोको सेवा गर्दा गर्दै बिलाइ रहेछ्न अनि आफ्नै संघर्षमा दबिएर बाध्यात्मक जीवन काटिरहेछ्न। हामीले यो संघर्ष पक्कै सुन्नै पर्ने हुन्छ र बुज्नु, बुजाउनु पर्ने हुन्छ। जसमा अमरजी सफल हुनु भएको छ।

कथाको घटना र परिवेश फेरि रहने भएकाले पाठकलाई पुस्तकले समाती रहन्छ। अन्त्यमा पात्र हरु सँगै गर्नुभएको वार्तालाप र चियापानको कुराले अझ यो पुस्तकको यथार्थपनमा सगाएको महशुस हुन्छ।

I read this book after reading his two masterpices - "Seto Dharti" & "Karadoun Kasturi".

I didn't find it much appealing as compare to his other publications.

It was hard for me to relate the title of this book to the stories and context presented, until I reached the end of the book.

The writer desperately tried to present the life of few people living in the same environment and how they are different to eachother.

I lost words to say about this book. 3 stars from my side.

The narratives are quite commendable. Nevertheless, I scrutinize not just the stories themselves, but also the mode of storytelling. While this book certainly contains stories, and good ones at that, the delivery style feels somewhat monotonous due to its uniformity across all narratives. There's a lack of distinctiveness in the presentation, consequently, even though the stories are worthwhile, they become tiresome.

I loved this book; its a living artwork! I loved all the characters, their joys and pain; their strength and weaknesses; their bitter realities and false pretenses, I could relate to their raw emotions! It was such a pleasant read, hats off! Highly recommended!

Turns out that this is the author's first book. I had heard about the author but not about the book. The book wasn't exactly what I expected. It was a little different. But I like it enough to want to read the other books of the author.

‌लेखकले टिप्न खोजेर पनि टिप्न नसकेका, भेट्न चाहेर नभेटेका अनि खोज्न नसकेका पानीका घाम कुनै दिन देख्न, भोग्न,‌ महसुस गर्न, टिप्न र उतार्न पाईयोस् !
