Luiz Eduardo de Oliveira (born on December 13, 1944 in Brazil),[1] more famous under his artist name LEO is a Brazilian comics creator.

After having graduated as an engineer in mechanics, Oliveira left Brazil because of the military dictatorship that was in power at the time. He went first to Chile, but the following year saw the Chilean coup of 1973. This led Oliveira to leave, moving to Argentina, from where he finally returned to Brazil in 1974.

He found work as an illustrator in the advertising industry of São Paulo, before once more leaving Brazil, in 1981, this time moving to France, hoping to illustrate comics. However as the Franco-Belgian comics industry was in recession at the time, he was forced to work in advertising once again, although he managed to get the occasional piece published in L'Écho des savanes and Pilote.
In 1986, with the assistance of Jean-Claude Forest, Oliveira began contributing to the youth dedicated magazines of Bayard Presse. He illustrated true stories for Okapi magazine. He then recounted Mahatma Gandhi's life in the album Gandhi, le pèlerin de la paix, for Astrapi.

In 1988, the comics writer Rodolphe asked him to provide the artwork for his stories. Their collaboration proved fruitful, producing 8 albums of material for their Trent series and 5 for their Kenya one.

In 1993, Oleveira finally achieved an old dream when Dargaud agreed to publish his first solo series: Aldébaran. In 2000, after 5 volumes of Aldébaran, he launched Bételgeuse, which was nominated for the Prize for a Series at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2004.

What did I think? I loved it.

Leo has given us something quite wonderful with his Worlds of Aldebaran books.

(When Goodreads isn't being a moody bitch, I'll come back and add some links to help navigate through the Worlds of Aldebaran.)

I got properly hooked by this after reading Épisode 1, and ploughed enthusiastically through the rest of the sequence. I felt that Leo is on top of his game here, balancing the travails of the exploration party (led of course by Kim, who is the heroine of the entire story) with the story of the evil fundamentalist cultists who are trying to assert control over the entire colony and put women like Kim in their place. At the same time the sensawunda is maintained, with the last volume knitting together strands from the Aldébaran and Bételgeuse cycles to reach a pretty satisfying conclusion to Kim's story, all as ever gorgeously illustrated.

This third episode, currently available on Kindle Unlimited, continues the pace of adventure of the second with hints of sabotage and attempted murder, but it is overburdened with sexual shenanigans and petty disputes. We’re back in soap opera territory. The episode ends on another cliffhanger but as this one is only the logical progression of the cliffhanger ending the previous episode it doesn’t feel like we have got anywhere. This episode is the last on KU and it hasn’t given me enough interest to seek out subsequent episodes.

So I loved Aldebaran and Betelgeuse but Antares is a bit more problematic for me. Don't make me wrong, it's still and incredibly exciting page turner, I just don't like that religious fanatics are now involved and also the planet reminds me too much of Harry Harrison's Deathworld, it's just a bit too dangerous, evil creatures popping out everywhere.

The story continues to unfold briskly, this time focusing on Kim and her companions as they make their way back the colonists base after a rescue expedition. Lots of weird and dangerous animals to be confronted (a standard theme in all Kim's adventures) and more than a little infighting amongst the group. Ends on a cliffhanger to make you want to move quickly onto the next volume.

Picking up where Antares: Episode 2 ended, Kim Keller and her unlucky team are trying to make their way back to the human settlement on Antares 5, and it is a dangerous journey. Meanwhile in the settlement Mr Pad and others are trying to secure that the religious extremism does not win the day entirely in the establishment of a human presence on this planet.

Leo's third instalment (of six) in the third cycle of his Worlds of Aldebaran saga continues to deliver on the premise of the series.

It's thin, mighty thin in comparison to previous volumes, but still entertaining. I like the "old school" illustration and black outlines, but really Leo, enough female nudity - and how beautifully natural it is - no nude men in sight though!

Recent Reads: Antares Episode 3. Leo's saga continues, as corner-cutting by the colony sponsors causes a shuttle to crash. Sent to rescue its crew, Kim finds herself stranded. A damaged crawler is the only way home, along the dangerous shore, trapped between ocean and the jungle.

Kim and her group go on a road trip across the strange place that is Antares. At any point, danger lurks and the story feels like pulp science fiction as any.
