Seth wakes naked on a dark and supernatural beach. With no memory of how he arrived and nothing in sight except for an ominous looking beach house, he fights his fears and enters in search of answers. Inside, he encounters an object that sends him on an unknown, yet wonderful, glimpse of what may or may not be his future. Here he meets and falls in Love with a girl named Sovannah. After spending the day with her, Seth once again wakes on the dark beach, filled with more questions and growing confusion.
He enters the ever-changing beach house again and again, each time in search of more answers and more glimpses of Sovannah, unknowing what might trigger one, or where or when in his future he might arrive. Each time, he is reluctantly pulled back to the dark beach, only to wake again in front of the mysterious beach house. Struggling to grasp the meaning of this strange new world, and fighting his increasing anger and lack of answers, Seth is desperate to learn the meaning of his situation, and trying to piece together his life with with Sovannah that is perpetually pulled away from him by some unseen force... before he runs out of time.
I believe this is Redenbaugh's debut, and it is a promising first novel. Ultimately a sweet love story, there are dominating elements of tragedy, despair and loss. Plot elements borrow a bit from the concept of "Jacob's Ladder" for example. The writing is a little "flabby" at times, but then there are lines like this: "Seth walked through a little doorway to the next room, careful not to pierce his bare foot on some unseen misery." I really like that. I enjoyed this novel, and will read "Salima Falls...", his next novel.
Masterfully written and emotionally poignant, Sunlight Parted tells the story of Seth, a young man whose life hangs in the balance after a near-fatal car accident.
While his loving family frets over his ultimate fate, Seth finds himself in a dream-state, suspended between life and death: he finds himself at a run-down, empty beach house next to an unmoving ocean one minute, and the next, he is at the side of the woman of his dreams, a beautiful woman named Sovannah. But after spending only a few short blissful moments with her, he is ripped away and returned to the same beach house.
Meticulously, lovingly crafted, Sunlight Parted is not only one of the best books I've read this year, but one of the best books I've read EVER. The ending, literally, brought me to tears. This book will shred your heart and yet still give you hope. I don't think I'll ever look at death, or even life, the same way again. I cannot recommend this book more highly.
Although it took a few chapters for me to get hooked onto this book, by midway I was lost in it. And when it finally ended I said to myself: "Wow" That was intense. I cried. I couldn't tell if I was happy/sad/both. It was well written, with a few slow spots, and a fantastic ending. Seems to be his only book. I'll be waiting for the next one. Worth a read for sure.
