Finishing Rainfall left me feeling pretty conflicted. On one hand, the way the book handles Zalak redemption is probably the best part of the entire ending. Watching him go from the twisted, violent Cruror to a man who just wants to be buried next to his brother is genuinely moving, and it is the one part of the finale that really landed for me. It is a sad, quiet moment that felt like it had actual weight compared to the rest of the chaos.
But the actual execution of the final battle was a struggle to get through. It felt like the author could not trust Zack to fight on his own because every single time he stepped up to face someone, he had to pause for a pep talk from Zashan or Angel inside his head. It completely kills the tension of a fight scene when the main character needs constant hand holding during a life or death moment. It made the climax feel less like a hard won victory and more like an exercise in listening to inner voices.
I also did not love how the battle wrapped up. The Lucerna showing up just as things looked hopeless felt like a pretty convenient way to bail the characters out of a losing situation. And honestly, the dialogue at the very end, calling the rain tears of the sky while everyone was standing around in the aftermath of a massacre, felt way too cheesy for a story that had been so dark and gritty up to that point.
It is a functional ending that gives the characters some closure, and I appreciated that the emotional stuff between the brothers worked, but I wish the final action sequences had been handled with a bit more grit and a lot less exposition. It is a decent wrap up, but it is not the strongest entry in the series.

Rainfall: Part Two (Children of the Phoenix) delivers a tense, emotional continuation of the saga, deepening the mythology while raising the personal stakes for its characters. The story blends supernatural conflict with family-driven drama, creating a narrative that feels both intimate and epic. The pacing tightens as secrets unravel, and the protagonist’s growth becomes the heart of the book. Themes of resilience, identity, and destiny shine through without overshadowing the action. While it leaves some questions lingering for the next installment, it succeeds as a gripping middle chapter that expands the world and emotional depth of the series.
