Gwyn Bennett is a best-selling author who writes intriguing fast-paced character driven crime mysteries.
She's always been a writer, initially working as a broadcast journalist and newsreader for the BBC and ITN in London, before she was able to become a full-time fiction author. Gwyn undertakes a lot of research for her books, weaving fact in with the fiction in order to make them relatable to readers. Her favourite days are when she hears from people who have enjoyed her books and meeting the characters.
Gwyn was born in England, but has lots of Welsh and some Irish blood in her. She now lives in the tiny Channel Island of Jersey, where her husband was born, with her family, rescue dog, and geriatric goldfish. Apart from being chief dog slave and fish feeder, she enjoys walking, yoga and eating crisps, with a bit of gardening when the sun shines.
very good book about a lady who's become a downtrodden housewife and is worried about letting her husband down at a business lunch. when things go badly wrong she show her mettle to protect her husband, family and dog. a great read from a great author, Gwyn Bennett. I also recommend her Harrison Lane series.
I was lucky enough to receive an early review copy and was completely absorbed by this clever, fast-paced story of a 40-something wife who finds herself in a terrifying situation and decides she's not going down without a fight. I was rooting for her all the way. Go, Mrs Barnes.
What stayed with me after reading Mrs Barnes is how the story transforms an ordinary woman into the emotional and psychological center of a high-stakes survival situation, forcing her to confront limitations she has spent years believing about herself.
The premise works because the danger feels personal from the beginning. What starts as a seemingly routine dinner quickly becomes a crisis, and the tension appears to come as much from Mrs Barnes’s internal battle as from the external threat surrounding her.
What stands out is how the novel challenges assumptions about age, confidence, and capability. Mrs Barnes is not presented as a conventional action hero, which makes her determination and resilience feel even more compelling. Her struggle seems rooted in self-perception as much as survival, creating a story that is both suspenseful and emotionally satisfying.
The fast pace and escalating danger provide the momentum, but the deeper appeal appears to come from watching someone who has been overlooked discover strengths she did not know she possessed.
Readers who usually gravitate toward psychological thrillers, suspense novels, and stories featuring strong but unconventional protagonists will likely connect with this because it combines intense tension with a character-driven journey of self-discovery.
What lingers is the reminder that the people most often underestimated can sometimes be the most dangerous when everything they care about is on the line.
This is a story that challenges your belief but remains a very entertaining read.
Mrs Barnes is a fictional account of a housewife breaking from her daily routines and domesticity to fight back both emotionally and physically. It is evident early on that Mrs Barnes has lost her sense of self and become a wife and Mum who treads on eggs shells as she tries to please a husband who is volatile at best. Is this volatility the result of the stresses and strains of his working life, or something more.
Full of intrigue, Mrs Barnes is a story of sacrifice, love and release from the life of a lost soul.
As I started to read this book I will admit I found it a little slow but oh boy that soon changed. The book starts with a dinner for four but that soon changes with very dramatic consequences, from then on its very exciting and fast paced. If you are in any doubt about reading this book please just give it a try I can promise you will not be disappointed, I read this in one sitting and I think you will as well. I love all of Gwyns books but this one is up very near the top of my list.
I was excited to read this book for a while and was not disappointed. I envy the writer's gift for pacing and enjoyed exploring this environment through the protagonist's eyes. I rarely see thrillers this well composed and devoured this one. I cannot wait for what the author produces next.
A fast paced thriller with an unusual lead makes for an interesting and pacy read. I’m intrigued as to how this will carry on in future novels but as with other books by this author this is an inventive and interesting read 4.5* from me
What a book. It keeps the tension there all the way through the book. I couldn’t put it down .To say it’s set around a small time period and in one place , I think it’s amazing how much suspense this book brings .
