Being a superhero isn't easy, especially when you're still in college. Since the battle in Washington, a little over a year ago, the Post Human crime rate has increased dramatically. The crime-fighting duo Shayne Tucker and Jackson Prescott, have been tasked with the arduous mission of bringing down some of the local criminals. The first few battles prove to be less than challenging for the duo. Things change quickly however, when a new threat determined to change the world emerges. Shayne and Jackson find themselves thrown into a world they are ill prepared for and must rely on one another if they are to survive.
In a word (a hyphenated word, actually) - action-packed.
This is a fun, fast and packed to bursting with action novella that the punches, kicks and super hero type abilities burst from its pages. Christian Green, a talented author who gives us this novella, the first in what should be a fun and intriguing series, creates a fun tale, but look deeper and you'll see a more complex narrative.
The plot centres around Shayne Tucker and Jackson Prescott, one who has an ice ability - so he can freeze assailants, whilst the other can create a fireball from nothing in his hands, and use it to devastating effect.
In the story's rather blistering start, I found myself a little confused between the two main characters, save for a brief description of their differences rather than their similarities, but as it is a novella, it is a nitpick, nothing more.
As the story develops, the differences become more clearer and it's here where the author comes into his own.
The duo are Post-Humans, and whilst special on the Earth they are somewhat a target to other groups. So whilst they feature as part of G.U.A.R.D there is a rogue faction that probably wouldn't mind recruiting their services to help the rebel cause, but of course, Shayne and Jackson are good guys, so they want no part of it.
The final third of the story is super frenetic, and I was gulping down tea with almost every paragraph.
I've read stories like this where there was so much going on, it was hard to keep track. Fortunately the author gets the balance just right, leaving much scope for the next in the series.
Lines I liked: "But I am who I am, and I refuse to let society dictate my happiness."
"Hey, I like to keep it one hundred."
And there are many more. It's a fun story that won't fail to hook you, reel you in, and excite you on every single page.
"The League of Protectors: Fire and Ice" is an action-packed novella set in the future where a League of Post Human Protectors strive to bring local criminals to justice. This short story follows the exploits of Shayne Tucker and Jackson Prescott friends and partners, polar opposites in abilities and temperament who fight to control any threat from subversive Post Humans.
Although the story is slow at first with minimal background information which I expect is contained in the first novel, the story quickly heats up when K.I.L.L. unleashes its plan to control Post Humans and dominate the world. With clever dexterity Christian Green uses sarcasm and humor to dilute the intensity built-up with every clash of these superheroes. The story is entertaining and imaginative; a page-turner from beginning to the end. And when you think the two fearless superheroes have saved the day, the ending is filled with more questions that beg for a sequel.
The characters are complex, realistic and fascinating; the friendship between Shayne and Jackson strong and binding for two individuals so different in personality. Shayne Tucker the African-American with powers of speed, pyrokinesis(fire) and self-healing is reserved, studious and idealistic. A strategist, he tends to be a shrewd and a clever leader while Jackson is thoughtless at times, a realist and has a flare for the dramatic. With the power of cyrokinesis (ice) he tends to be impulsive and very social, loving the limelight. Of the two Jackson is the charming womanizer while Shayne is a romantic, but their friendship and loyalty is considered legendary.
Although you only glimpse the cruelty, menace and deceptiveness of Greg Dansbury and Dorian Graner, these agents of K.I.L.L. are formidable villains who I expect will dominate the pages of Christian Green's next novel adding power and drama to the story.
I enjoyed "The League of Protectors: Fire and Ice" and look forward to reading his next novel. Reminiscent of Michael Carroll's writing style Christian Green is a writer to watched in future.
Fire and Ice focuses on superheroes Shayne Tucker and Jackson Prescott. They are so-called Post Humans - i.e. humans with special (superhero) abilities. One of them produces fire, the other's weapon is ice. They are not to harm the criminals, justice is handled by other parties.
With Fire and Ice, Christian Green has created a fun and fresh superhero story. Fire and Ice gives you an insight into the life and friendship of two relatively different students; an introvert and an extrovert womanizer. The combination of Shayne and Jackson's everyday life and their special tasks kept me hooked. Christian Green balances the male students' habits and needs as well as their crime-fighting superhero abilities well. It is a fast-paced and enjoyable read. I felt like an invisible (sometimes chuckling) observer. Fire and Ice is a good read for young adult superhero fans, who prefer a slightly humorous touch.
This is a pleasant read - I would like to read more about The League of Protectors.
I wish I had enjoyed this Novella, but I just couldn't get into it. The premise of Post Human's with extraordinary powers is something I usually love to read (and write), but Green's characters are what killed it for me.
It's not that they are not well developed. The two main characters Shane and Jackson are just annoying to me. Even though only one of the characters is supposed to be a womanizer, the other reads just as sexist. Don't get me wrong, I am on board with a variety of characters (even ones I don't like), but I would probably have liked the book more if there were other strong characters to off-set the sexism.
It took me a while to understand the Post Human world Green created and after some Goodreads research, I found there is a novel set before this one. I probably won't read the novel.
This book will probably appeal to others better than it did me and maybe if I had read the novel first, I would have enjoyed it better.
This short novella follow up was very intriguing. It follows the adventures of Shayne Tucker and Jackson Prescott. They didn't get as much of a chance to shine as some of the other members did in the novel, so it was nice to see them get their own novella here. There was a lot of action in this story and a lot of detail. In some regards, too much detail, but I can overlook that because of the overall delivery of the story. Mr. Green really makes the readers care about the friendship his two characters have with one another. He sets the tone for the next full length novel and I am really looking forward to seeing what the villains that were introduced will do next!
Great Story! It held my interest from start to finish! The novella is filled with suspense. The story kept my adrenaline pumping.
Jackson and Shayne, superheroes of The League of Protectors, work well together. Jackson has a humorous side whereas Shayne has a more serious personality. Both have powers which they use to fight evil. There is mystery involved and these Protectors work to try to solve it.
I rate this novella five stars and look forward to reading the second novel.
This short story was filled with action. You can definitely see some growth between this novella and book 1. I was happy to see Shayne and Jackson get their own story. Their relationship felt real. This novella introduces what I think will be a major villain in his next book. Lots of information in this short novella. He will need to cut some of that out in his next installment. I was quite pleased with this story!
Much better editing from first novel. A lot packed into a novella but a great look at the two best friends and youngest protectors. Leaves new questions to be answered for second book. Can't wait.
