Heart and Soul

Rate this book
My name is Jimothy Van Done, or that’s what the orphanage birth certificate says. Jimothy. I hate that name. I bet some lazy clerk misspelled Timothy. Anyway, that’s just one of many things I hated about my life, but there was very little I could do about it. The corporate orphanage owned us. They housed, fed, clothed, and educated us. If you were smart enough, they gave you specialized training. If you did well in those classes, you were sold to corporations to continue your training and were put to work maintaining corporate equipment.
I will admit that I had it better than some others, but I studied hard and worked hard to succeed. Then I found out the game was rigged. The corporation never had any intentions of letting any of us leave their employ. I was a tier-one asset, which was just another word for slave. I wasn’t sure how, but someday I would figure out a way to escape.
My opportunity came unexpectedly when I went on an off-book job for one of my monitors. He’d gotten deep in debt with the wrong people, and to pay his debt, I had to do a job. The job was to repair a malfunctioning autodoc. No big deal, I repaired equipment like this all the time. However, this was the first time a sentient nanite AI was involved. They were trying to steal the AI, and he was blocking access to the autodoc he was in.
Well, as they say, it’s all fun and games until an eye gets poked out. Or, in my case, a firefight breaks out, where I was shot three times. I woke up in a ventilation shaft, in bloody clothes, with a nanite AI who had taken up residence inside me. To add insult to injury, the corporation would do anything, or kill anyone they had to, to get the AI back. Yeah, my life just keeps getting better and better.

Great simple story, which have come to appreciate from this author.

The biggest thing I always say about his writing is that it's just fun entertainment. This book was enjoyable, he's done other space related world builds and honestly I wish he's continued some of those stories as he's left a lot of readers hanging after enjoying the characters that he creates. I love the hero's journey that his work caters to, and the uniqueness of having the main character figure out with his own agency how to get justice in his life. No matter how overpowered or silly some of the premises are, sometimes it's just enjoyable to read happy ending stories. If you're familiar with this author it's more of the same, fun simple and great entertainment. If you're new to the author check out his other works it's worth it. I find sometimes, well a lot of times, reading just good simple entertainment and not necessarily high-end intellectual theological or political satire or drama, is just what you need in today's world. A great fun hero's ish journeys tale.

I quite liked the first thirty or forty pages, unfortunately the book went steadily downhill after that. Things happen that the author would have you believe are reasonable, but if looked at closely are totally illogical and are being forced to happen. There is a theme to many of this author’s books where things are ’Easy come, Easy go’, with this book it became ridiculous as the main character accumulates people and resources, then they are are all killed and destroyed over and over again.

Boring, give it a miss.

The MC is an emotionless Gary stu who can do anything, go anywhere, and always has as much money as the plot requires. I couldn't finish it. People die, who he supposedly cares for, and he doesn't seem to care. Just moves on to the next thing immediately, no reaction, no emotions. He's never challenged or struggles with anything, he never makes a wrong choice.

I didn't finish it. It's not a bad premise, but the book had very little heart to it. The main character doesn't seems to really care about anything. He flits from idea to idea and is fine with literally anything and we don't get a thought process beyond 'yeah that's a good idea'. No emotions; never sad, confused, or excited, just fine.

More in depth:
2 things get to me 1 minor, I have no idea how old he is or how long things take through most of the book. is he 16? 18? older?

and 2 and this one is a biggie for me (*spoilers*) he doesn't seem to feel/care about anything but it's especially noticeable when people die. Kill someone for the first time? That gets less than a paragraph of reflection. Have the one person that cares about you and has been your mentor and only friend for the last 6 months to maybe 2 years, die? murdered?! that gets half a sentence of mild distress as he witnesses it happening. once the mentor is dead all is fine and he moves on no problem. zero sadness and doesn't waste a single minute mourning him. I stopped reading after over he loses over 100 people that he was responsible for and there is literally nothing written about how that might be a bad thing. this includes other characters not feeling things. Not caring about the fact that they lost life long friends and their leader is making jokes (and people laughing) about how he lost 2 ships and maybe he might want to switch jobs.

Avery engaging military/business building sci-fi story.

The MC is a super-compentent corporate slave who is looking for an escape from his servitude when events conspire to introduce him to a nannite based AI. He escapes to a space station, then gets certs to become a ship owner. I loved the action and the intrigue though the MC's nerdy background as a tech who leveled into a player negotiating with admirals was a leap. Also, his battle tactics acumen, despite his AI, also seemed a bit of a stretch. Still I really enjoyed the book, though I was saddened by the deaths of his allies. He also hasn't taken time to develop a girlfriend though he's come close twice, but still no nookie yet. Nor has he gotten around to paying the corporate raiders back yet, though its in the works.

Still, a really enjoyable book and I look forward to a sequel.

Not much dialogue in this descriptive story

The title of this book is misleading. The story is told in a format like “I did this. Then I told Mike to do that. Then I did this next thing.” Not a very exciting way to tell a story - very little dialogue between characters. In fact there are very few characters, so not a lot of heart or soul. Fortunately, the plot is interesting and often surprising, so I didn’t give up on it. There are a few problems with the story: the fact that there is always enough money to do just about anything makes everything too easy; in spite of the fact that the AI had enough agency to figure out how to escape its initial situation, it reverts mostly to being an order taker after that; the MC seems to know how to do everything and react in any situation, which is not warranted by his background as an orphaned kid raised in a highly controlled environment. I was irritated by these things, but I still enjoyed the story and will read the next installment. Oh, and I have no complaints about typos or grammar which is refreshing.

Another knockout space adventure!

Mr. Haddock's ability to craft quality stories continues. Clean, interesting plots with engaging MCs and supporting characters. Although somewhat formulaic, as all of his stories seem to be, there's a reason why I keep coming back and buying them as soon as I find them. They're enjoyable, easy reads and I like going back and re-reading them!
Mr. Haddock, please 🙏 stay healthy and continue writing these wonderful stories! Oh, and returning to some of your earlier stories would be great, but only if you can think of some good plots! Keep it up!

Solid, I would like more building (base, city, company, nation, etc.)

As far as writing quality, this is some of the cleanest and best yet.

I did enjoy it (mostly) but we end up spending a good chunck of the book just going up and down. I wanted more of him building something that lasts.

This progression is in the same vein as most of Haddock's other space based stories. I would love to see more in the style of his "duty trilogy," where there's more of a feeling of building something. While this story certainly had many elements from that series, it was more about the ebb and flow of life than building up.

Till next time...

abrupt end

Not quite a cliff hanger as we know how things will turn out, but abrupt nonetheless.
Main character is OP in the story, and theres a fair amount of duex ex machina.
Overall this is a pulp space opera, but one that moves along quickly.
There are a number if issues if you start thinking about the plot to long, but its a light read thats got solid word choice, good spelling, solid layout, and overall good editing in all aspects except storyline, where there are the caveats mentioned above.

Overall, better than many, not as good sd a master. a solid B/B-.
Will look for the sequel.

Fairly early on, the protagonist gets infected, for lack of a better word, with an AI embodied in nanites. The book pretty much falls apart at that point, because the AI can do almost anything.

From then on, Van solves most of his problems just by asking the AI to fix it, and it fixes it in moments. It routinely writes completely new false identities for Van, and at one point Van decides he wants a starship, so the AI hacks the local computers to show Van as the owner.

The capabilities of the AI are wildly implausible, but more importantly they remove any sense that the Van is challenged by anything.

What would you do with a first-hand understanding of what it means to be under the heel of corporations, the benefit of boundless intellect, unlimited resources, and a desire to live in a more just universe? In space? That's pretty much the premise of this book.

Our main characters are likeable, the adventures non-stop, the misadventures common, and the pace is fast.

Sometimes I get frustrated when I start a series and find the story stretched over too many books. Heart & Soul kind of did the opposite, compressing an epic story down to one book, but not in a way I minded.

Its not a flawless book, but it's a fun read.

Love reading James Haddock Stories

I loved this story, like all of James H.’s stories it was quick paced and not lacking at all in content. The only down side is right up until the end the story keeps going making you immediately want the second book, which takes some time to write. The story itself follows the description accurately offered by Amazon. The MC struggles to survive corporations and their antics, the progression of the story was never lacking in action nor stalled with unnecessary filler dialogue. I loved it and really wish the second story was out already.

Could not finish it. A tale of failure and restarts.

At 70% I had to stop reading. The bad guys kept winning and killed everyone but the Main Character. The MC is smart, but not tactical. He doesn't anticipate how others will react and there is no law and order in space, just might makes right. So he has to reset to a new identity again with yet another plan. And apparently every ship Captain just loves to use the self destruct and mutiny for money is very common. I can't bring myself to read what happens next.

James Haddock

James Haddock is an annoying author. I have enjoyed all of his books I've read considering most if not all to be above average. His MC is usually ridiculously lucky but sometimes it's nice to experience hopeful fiction. The main problem I and many other readers have that I have noticed, is his refusal to answer our question: What next for the characters? Where is book two etc? Assuming that it does not drive him stale I would be very happy to read more on the existing characters and probably new ones too. He lost one star for the frustration he provides.

Not up to par

I can normally enjoy this authors stories even if they are derivative of each other. This one however was a lacking when it came the MC's personality. Sure the MC was a super genius when it came to tech, but kept making unforced errors in judgement when it came to other actions. Most of the characters were very bland. The story started to make less and less sense. He had access to unlimited funds, so why risk everything by trying to start a side hustle or other endeavors. Just sit back and enjoy life while using you mundane job as cover.

great story, pacing and characters

I really liked the background story and coming of age progression. The characters were well developed, but the lack of time-sense was a little disturbing. I know the MC was young to begin with and the story progress through his early Rene’s, but then it just dropped off with no mention of it again. I missed the sense of time/age from that point on, but am looking forward to more books!

Another enjoyable SciFi Romp

I was wondering when James would get back to writing straight SciFi. I mean I like all his books but variety is nice too. This one is great, simple and spare in style and littered with his trade mark 90 degree plot turns. As usual the MC is very effective and manages to avoid being a dunce for plot progression like many writers seem to think protagonists need to be. I find James’s clean simple style to be very appealing these days.

Love James Haddock books

I have everything available on Audible, and those not yet on Audible I have on Kindle, I have bought some physical copies as well for my grandsons.
This newest release is just as enthralling. I started it yesterday, and finished this morning before work. Good thing it's raining, or I would feel guilty.
It you like sci-fi, space, I highly recommend it.

So I was out and about and needed a book, Amazon recommended this, so I decided to try it.

The premise was interesting: A young man raised in a corporate creche and trained as a maintenance drone manages to escape. I got turned off when this young man apparently knows all about surveillance and high-finance even though he was entirely raised in a very stunted social environment. 25% of the book in, and it's just not thrilling me. DNF.

I really enjoyed this book. The action was enough to keep it from being boring. There could have been a little more on the emotional side. As with many stories, there is no financial issues for the main character, which leaves me wondering how a poor person would go through similar issues. Being a person of low income, I have some trouble relating to stories with characters who can just buy what they want.

automation and engineering vs corporate greed

This book gives us a new twist on future tech that’s fighting wage slaves corporate greed backed by government corruption. It’s got a hero whose brilliant technical mind and a lucky nanite AI crossing allows an escape from slavery. Lots of effort and heart break leads to success in a rollicking tech-leading interstellar journey. I can’t wait for the next installment

Quite the Tale!

While there is conflict and drama and the losses that come with those, this book remains positive through to the end. It’s a fairytale style storyline, and much of the progress and advancement is due to mystical forces, highly technical ones in this universe, and an abundance of fortune and assets. There are some significant events which cause tremendous loss, but our main hero manages always to survive.

As usual, very well done, though I'm more than a bit disappointed......

Not with the book, per se, but with the fact that this WAS NOT the third book in the Duty trilogy. Please, Mr. Haddock, if you never plan to complete the trilogy, just let us know. I love that series, and being strung along like this for years is quite frustrating.

All the nuances and necessities.

Definitely a militaristic style of writing which is much appreciated for the views and realism into new dimensions of thought processes. This Definitely has an overpowered nameless persona who has interesting abilities through chance and luck always a lucky guy. Thanks for all you do Mr. Haddock.

Riveting Reading

A well planned story, lots of interesting characters with a supporting caste, excellent editorial work beyond fault.
This is one of those books that grips you at page one, and does not let you go off until the finish, if the author doesn’t follow this with another in the series it will be a bitter disappointment.

Review

This book is in line with the rest of Mr. Haddock's work. Mc is overpowered and the story moves quickly. I always find his main characters likeable and intelligent. I expected the story to go a different way and the mc to be a little more proactive in punishing his enemies where they originate, but I was overall happy with the story.

Loved it - as usual

I liked the MC and his nanite companion. It was a mostly fun story and I liked the lack of grisly scenes. So many interesting ideas - it's like the dreams we had of conquering and inhabiting space.

PS I hope this story means you're ready to complete the Duty Trilogy for your wife and me. Maybe you'll find some sentient dragons or Gryphons. :)

Upgraded Merc Salvage

As I have said before, a good read with the plot similar to, but upgraded from earlier mercenary salvage stories. Mr. Haddock gives us an interesting idea, combines with successful ideas of his previous storylines and is successful. I look forward to each of his books.

Another Hit

Another hit from Mr. Haddock even with the usual formula. I loved the MC/story and hope this will get a sequel cause we are still waiting to finish some of his other stories. No real complaints cause if you've read any of his other works you no what you're in for and I love it. Patiently waiting on the next one!!!!

Great Read want some more.

I like the start from scratch, pull up from bootstraps type of story and this one delivers. I didn’t like the over reliance on A. I. At the last third of the story but it ended on a hopeful note. I would like to see this story as a trilogy or longer has a lot of potential as an empire builder.
