Not all nightmares come from sleep. Some come from #1 New York Times bestselling author Jeneva Rose.

Three horror stories.

A dinner party. A quiet house. A roadside stop.

You’ll recognize the setup.

You won’t recognize what comes next.

Never Kill the Medium

A thirtieth birthday dinner turns deadly after someone hires a medium for a playful séance. When the ritual spirals out of control and the medium dies, the guests cover it up—unaware that leaving the séance unfinished has allowed something dark to cross over.

The Nightmare House

The Dalton family moves into what they believe is their forever home, in the quiet town of Tillington—until the house whispers, the neighbors watch, and no one believes the one person who knows something is wrong. Newly postpartum, Kristin Dalton soon uncovers a horrifying truth: every family who has lived in this house has died or disappeared.

All Curses Are Final

On the way to a remote winter cabin, a group of friends stops at a roadside store with a hand-painted “All items cursed. Curse lifted at time of sale.” They laugh it off—until one of them discovers an item in her bag she never paid for. As the storm traps them inside the cabin and bodies start to pile up, paranoia takes hold and suspicion turns inward.

Thriller queen Jeneva Rose delivers her first collection of horror short stories with a dinner party gone wrong, a haunted house of horrors, and a friendship getaway that ends in a bloodbath…! I don’t usually gravitate towards horror fiction but I would read Jeneva’s grocery list and this collection is very fun; the first two stories in particular are very creepy and I will never look at a casserole the same again. Jeneva delivers the thrills, chills, and the creep factor in biting short stories that kept me turning the pages…with the light on!

This was so close to being a five-star read for me.

I've always enjoyed Jeneva Rose's ability to write incredibly addictive books, and seeing her step into horror was a lot of fun. The biggest compliment I can give this collection is that I genuinely did not want to put it down. I kept telling myself "just one more page" until suddenly I was finished.

Of the three stories, Never Kill the Medium was easily my favorite. The concept was creepy, the pacing was sharp, and it delivered exactly the kind of supernatural chaos I was hoping for. The Nightmare House came in a close second. The combination of a haunted house story and postpartum anxiety created a genuinely unsettling atmosphere that kept me hooked from beginning to end.

All Curses Are Final was still enjoyable, but it didn't quite hit the same level for me as the first two stories. My biggest issue is that I wanted more from it. I know these are short stories, and brevity comes with the territory, but this one especially felt like it needed a little extra room to breathe. The setup was fantastic, and I found myself wishing for just a bit more character development and tension before everything wrapped up.

In fact, if I had one overall critique of the collection, it's that the final story didn't quite deliver the big finish I was hoping for. The stories are strongest in the order of Never Kill the Medium, The Nightmare House, and then All Curses Are Final, which left me feeling like the collection peaked early rather than building toward its biggest punch.

That said, this was still a thoroughly entertaining read. Creepy, fast-paced, and impossible to put down. I really enjoyed seeing Jeneva Rose explore horror, and I hope she continues writing in the genre.

Mother Goose, please write more horror!

Three horror novellas, each different but equally entertaining. A birthday dinner turns into a supernatural blood bath. A haunted house with the most creepy neighbors. A winter getaway to a cabin in the woods is cursed.

These stories were so fun, especially for a horror lover like me! I especially enjoyed the second story, The Nightmare House. I love a haunted house and this one really got under my skin with its eerie small town, bizarre neighbors and dark traditions. I could've easily read 3 more!

I had this moment of, yes! a new Jeneva Rose book...and it's horror...with Sometimes I Scare Myself , but then I had a sense of disappointment that it as actually three novellas. Then, I had a sense of joy that it was three different stories. It was a rollercoaster of thoughts, but ultimately Rose crafts three uniquely horrifying stories that didn't disappoint.

Not all nightmares come from sleep. Some come from #1 New York Times bestselling author Jeneva Rose. Three horror stories. A dinner party. A quiet house. A roadside stop. You'll recognize the setup. You won't recognize what comes next.

Like most collections of stories, there are some homers and some that fall just short. All-in-all a fun journey into horror for Rose.

Never Kill the Medium

My thirtieth birthday was not my favorite, but definitely went much better than what Jeneva Rose crafted in Never Kill the Medium. What starts as a nice gesture devolves into a maddening night of death that is brutal and unsettling.

Thirtieth birthday dinner turns deadly after someone hires a medium for a playful séance. When the ritual spirals out of control and the medium dies, the guests cover it up-unaware that leaving the séance unfinished has allowed something dark to cross over.

Never Kill the Medium was the right choice to kick-off this collection of novellas, it hit hard and didn't hold anything back. It's just the right amount of creepy supernatural horror that made you want to continue reading and get to the next stories in the collection. Taking the consequences of a play séance to the next level, a deadly level and letting it play out was utterly terrifying.

The length was also perfect for this story, quick and fast-paced concise storytelling allowed us to never come down from the fear presented to us and just continue to amplify the horror.

The Nightmare House

Horror fans should always be game for a new haunted house story, or at least a mysterious house story. Especially those where the author manages to wrap in some grief and family drama to the mix. The Nightmare House is just that, a nightmare.

The Dalton family moves into what they believe is their forever home, in the quiet town of Tillington-until the house whispers, the neighbors watch, and no one believes the one person who knows something is wrong. Newly postpartum, Kristin Dalton soon uncovers a horrifying truth: Every family who has lived in this house has died or disappeared.

While doesn't pack the punch of the first story in this collection, The Nightmare House does bring the haunted house vibes that you'd expect from this type of tale. A city family moving to the suburbs, getting a stellar deal on a house, to only find out there is much more to what's going on at the house they knew a head of time. Who would've known!

The fear is present, even unsettling. as the mother is postpartum and has to carry that on her shoulders at the same time as things go array in their new house. The level of thrills is high in this one and was a surprising take on the haunted house trope.

All Curses Are Final

Closing things out in the collection of stories that fall into the category of "what could possibly go wrong," is All Curses Are Final. A remote winter getaway with a group of friends that doesn't turn out the way they had hoped with bodies piling up.

On the way to a remote winter cabin, a group of friends stops at a roadside store with a hand-painted warning: "All items cursed. Curse lifted at time of sale." They laugh it off-until one of them discovers an item in her bag she never paid for. As a storm traps them inside the cabin and bodies start to pile up, paranoia takes hold and suspicion turns inward.

Of course this story would've been boring if it was just about friends on a winter getaway and the sign warning them of curses being lifted once purchase actually meant that. But who knew that wouldn't be the case. I say this in jest, only because I love a good story like All Curses Are Final.

Unlike the first two stories, I could've used a more expanded story in this final entry. It felt just a bit more rushed, while also another fun story for Rose's venture into horror.

Sometimes I Scare Myself hits bookstores everywhere on September 22, 2026 from Blackstone Publishing. The audiobook is available via Libro.fm!

𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠. 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭-𝐢𝐟𝐬...𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞, 𝐢𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞. 𝐈𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐟 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞.

Three novellas. Three familiar setups. A birthday dinner. A haunted house. A roadside stop on the way to a winter getaway. They all begin with situations that horror fans have seen before, but that's exactly what makes this collection so much fun. It lulls you into thinking you know the rules before Mother goose gleefully rewrites them. Every story starts with an innocent little "what if?" and then follows that question to its most horrifying conclusion. By the end, I had that delicious feeling every horror reader chases: the sudden realization that absolutely nowhere feels safe anymore.

Each novella brought something different to the table. 𝑵𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝑲𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒖𝒎 was pure supernatural chaos, taking a séance gone wrong and letting the consequences snowball into something deliciously sinister. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑵𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝑯𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆 was probably the one that got under my skin the most. I'm a sucker for haunted house stories, and this one wraps grief, isolation, and postpartum vulnerability around an unsettling mystery that just keeps tightening the screws. Then 𝑨𝒍𝒍 𝑪𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒆𝒔 𝑨𝒓𝒆 𝑭𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒍 came along and said, "Hold my beer." Watching a group of friends slowly turn on one another after one tiny mistake was equal parts claustrophobic and wildly entertaining. It's amazing how quickly people abandon logic when survival enters the chat.

What impressed me most is that none of these stories overstayed their welcome. They get in, wreck your peace of mind, and get out before you have a chance to recover. That's harder to pull off than it looks. Each novella stands perfectly well on its own, but together they feel like a showcase of just how many different ways horror can make you uncomfortable. The next time someone invites me to a dinner party, offers me a tour of their dream house, or suggests we stop at a quirky little roadside shop, my answer will be a very enthusiastic, "Absolutely not." Thank you to Blackstone Publishing for this thrilling early copy that will publish September 22, 2026.

Jeneva Rose is my favorite author, so let's get that out in the open first.
I was BEYOND excited when I got my approval for an advanced copy of her first venture into the Horror genre, even though it's not one I gravitate to too often. I'm grateful there were three stories, because two of the three were creepy enough that I can't imagine reading a full-length book of either story. Now let's get into each story:
'Never Kill the Medium' was the tamest of the three. I preferred this one over the other two for the sole fact that it wasn't TOO scary. This one also was a slower burn and took its time getting to the meat of the story.
'The Nightmare House' actually made me concerned I would have nightmares, mostly because I was reading immediately before going to sleep. This one made me feel the most uneasy. I also moved to a community of around 300 people as an outsider myself almost two years ago, so maybe it just hit a little too close to home.
'All Curses Are Final' was a touch less horrific than 'The Nightmare House', but I was still concerned for the well-being of my subconscious before going to sleep. I wish I had more information about each character overall, especially since their relationships with the narrating character were somewhat major plot points, but since it's a short story, I know that's not always possible.
Overall, if you have read Jeneva Rose in the past and want to take a chance on her horror release, definitely do so! Just maybe don't read them right before bed if you only occasionally read scarier books.

I received an advance copy of Sometimes I Scare Myself through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

As someone who really enjoys Jeneva Rose's work, I was excited to dive into this collection of three horror stories. Never Kill the Medium, The Nightmare House, and All Curses Are Final are all delightfully creepy with intriguing setups that immediately pull you in.

That said, I think I may enjoy Jeneva Rose more as a novelist than as a short-story writer. Each story had strong ideas, interesting characters, and enough eerie moments to keep me turning pages, but I found myself wanting more from all three. They each felt like they were missing that extra layer of depth or development that I suspect would have naturally unfolded had they been expanded into full-length novels.

One thing Rose consistently gets right is her writing style. It's clever, fast-paced, and incredibly easy to read. There's just enough snark and wit sprinkled throughout to make you smirk without crossing into eye-roll territory. Even when I wanted more from the stories themselves, I still genuinely enjoyed the experience of reading them.

Overall, while I wished these stories had more room to breathe, I still had a good time with this collection and would recommend it—especially for readers who enjoy accessible horror with fun concepts and Jeneva Rose's signature voice.

Sometimes I Scare Myself is a collection of three, short horror stories. Story one involves a medium at a birthday dinner party with a reading gone wrong, story two involves a creepy house in a rural town and story three involves a cabin in the woods, a cursed object and a group of friends snowed in for the weekend.

These were fantastic! Mother Goose does not let her readers down. I especially loved story 2 which creeped me out the most, especially with the ending.

Jeneva, please write more horror! Your imagery is quite vivid in these stories from the birthday party dinner food descriptions to the horror portions. The chapter drawings add a creepy touch as well. Loved this! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. All opinions are my own. Expected publication: 22 September 2026 To note, I can’t wait for my pre-ordered physical, signed copy to arrive in September! Add this to your TBR just in time for Halloween!

I hate read The Perfect Marriage and The Perfect Divorce, so I really wasn't sure this would be up my alley. I was pleasantly surprised and would give it a 3.5 overall.

It is three short horror stories, not connected in anyway other than the spooky theme. It was a quick and engaging read, that reminded me a bit of the Twilight Zone. The first story is about a couple throwing a birthday dinner, when a medium shows up and things go off course. The second story is about a family who moves into a cursed house. I particularly liked how she wrote both the perspectives from the teen and the mom, who was struggling postpartum. The last story is about a group of friends on a college break who fall under a curse after they steal a pen.

Thank you to Blackstone Publishing for the ARC. I saw this is set to release in September and I think it would make a good Halloween read.

Welcome the new Queen of Horror!

I've always enjoyed Jeneva Rose's full-length novels, so I was eager to pick up this collection of short stories. Rose opens the book with an introduction explaining what inspired her to write these tales, which adds a nice personal touch.

The first story, Never Kill the Medium, sets the tone immediately—and it is genuinely creepy. My favorite story, however, was The Nightmare House. It follows the classic horror setup of a family leaving the city for a quieter life in the country, only to discover that their new home comes with some very unsettling surprises.

Like all short story collections, some tales are stronger than others, but Rose delivers plenty of twists, chills, and page-turning suspense throughout. If you're already a fan of Jeneva Rose, this collection won't disappoint. And if you're new to her work, it's a fun introduction to her darker side.

3.5 ⭐ rounded up to a 4.
Perfect for spooky season or an evening when you are up late, alone, and already kind of spooked. 🫣 This short story collection will freak you out and also entertain you. I'm not a huge fan of horror but I do occasionally read it. The writing wasn't as good as her usual novels, but I also think a lot of people will really like it.

What happens when a dinner party with friends turns into a terrifying encounter with a medium? What about a weekend trip in the mountains during a snowstorm that ends up pitting friends against each other and pointing figures when people start dying? This trio of stories is best told in the dark and while it's creepy, it is also kind of fun.

Thank you netgalley for an ARC to enjoy.

In this trio of horror tales, Rose explores her most unhinged and terrifying thoughts. The first story, "Never Kill the Medium," centers around a birthday party that goes completely awry when the spiritualist hired by the group is accidentally slain before closing the party's connection to the spirit realm. The second story, “The Nightmare House,” follows a young family as they learn their new neighborhood is home to some pretty dark traditions. The third story, “All Curses are Final,” involves a vacation gone wrong when a sign in a gift shop is ignored. Rose pushes the envelope a bit more with each story in this collection, which makes for a really fun reading experience!

Jeneva Rose is a hit or miss for me I have noticed. I did not enjoy this horror short story collection at all. The writing itself is what made me not like it. There wasn't really any description to it, which is what I look for. None of the short stories truly stood out to me. Good if you need a quick read though.
