Stella Anderson was forced to move from her home in southern Georgia to Saint Augustine University in Pennsylvania when an incident at a party left her struggling mentally and in need of a major change of scenery. Her plan: focus on getting into grad school. No distractions. No boys.
Colton Crosby has built a name for himself as one of St. A’s most talented—and most lusted after—hockey players. While Colt appears to be the stereotypical, easy-going party boy on the surface, there’s more to him than meets the eye. Aspiring to be team captain next season, and hoping to get an NHL offer, all Colt wants to do is make his parents proud.
After a night of mistakes and bad first impressions, Stella and Colt are partnered up to work on a project for class, where they’re forced to spend time together. The two of them learn to help and heal one another, spending more time confiding in each other than working. That is, until Colt sustains a life-changing injury that has the potential to reverse everything they’ve worked to overcome.
I mean I gobbled this up in 3 days. I found myself reading when getting ready in the morning, between sets at the gym, waiting for various appointments, late at night. So that tells you how addicted I was. Very good book featuring good male friendships, healthy communication, mental health, and much more. Sarah absolutely killed her first book. Could not be more impressed w/ her!!!!
I know I’m a bit biased, but this is genuinely such a phenomenal book. I read it unbelievably fast because I just simply needed to know what kept coming!
This book is so much more than a little hockey romance (although it def lives up to the genre). The focus on mental health, strong friendships even when they get hard, coming to terms with your own feelings and fears, and getting the love you deserve, not only from others, but from yourself — amazing.
Fell in love with the characters so quickly because they feel like real people living very real lives. Was so endeared by the little pieces of Sarah’s personal life she placed into the story.
Can’t wait for more from my bestie (and trust she hasn’t had a moment of peace from me since I read it and prob won’t for the foreseeable books haha).
I love this authors writing style and how she uses words to make you feel like your in the story. I loved how strong Stella was with her own trauma and how she finally opened up and trusted people. Colt also had loss and was moving thru life but not really fulfilled. This book is full of spicy chemistry and so much love you feel it oozing off the pages. There is sassiness and banter and you can’t help but fall with all these characters. I am excited to read and fall into the next book in this series. If you want a book that is well written and makes you smile and take the ride with Stella and Colt to their happy ending this should be your next book.
I loved it from the start! I loved how caring and loving Colt was and their relationship all together. They’re such a sweet couple and I couldn’t put the book down. I hope there will be a part two of this book.
I enjoyed the story of Stella and Colt. It was emotional at times, funny, and full of spice. The relationship between Colt and Stella is hopeful and poignant. I absolutely love how open they were willing to be with each other. They took a chance on love and on each other when they both were so afraid of opening up to each was beautiful. I really liked how the author made emphasis on the mental health aspect of Colts story. It is an increasingly important topic to explore and as someone who has had to deal with mental health issues, I appreciated how this was handled. As Colt and Stella's relationship evolved, I really liked how they had such an open line of communication and instead of hiding their feeling when things got hard, they were open and honest. It brought hope to how a relationship should be. Overall, I found this story touching and at times found myself being emotional and also rooting for them. I can't wait to see how the author explored the other characters!

Read as an ARC, coming to KU on March 31st. This is a must read!! I really appreciated the mental health representation in this book. I felt like it did a great job explaining mental health from the side of the individual going through the difficulties as well as the perspectives of those who love that individual.
There were some spicy parts of this book, but they didn't take over the whole book.
Honestly, I could talk about this book for days, I enjoyed it that much.
I, like many others, have been engrossed in the hockey romance genre for a while. I was curious how an up-and-coming author would approach this storyline. I was also nervous about it in a college setting, as that era in my life is long behind me. The story did begin with quite a bit of college antics, getting drunk and hooking up with the roommate for one. I am glad that the interaction between the lime lighting roommate and Stella was short lived.
The story continues and gets more deep than a hockey romance requires, and I appreciate this enrichment. Stella is a transfer to this university after being assaulted at a party, and is now super cautious about being with a party boy. Enter party boy Colt. I love the conflict in that she has to get over her trauma, and the fact that Colt is so understanding, patient, and loving in getting her past previous hurts. This book gave me faith that it isn’t just years and experience that can teach you to be a good and present partner.
Colt’s story is compelling as well. I can really relate to the pressure he gives himself to perform at his best in every aspect of his life, to the detriment of his mental health. He hits his head on the ice and then has temporary amnesia. That was heartbreaking to read, but I couldn’t put the book down either.
I think this book does a fantastic job of being a little bit about hockey, but a lot about how we deal with life’s curveballs, how love and relationships can strengthen us to deal with those issues, and come out better for it.
I will be looking for the next installment from Sarah when it comes out.

I received this book as an ARC and enjoyed it. I'm a harsh critic and read endless sports romance stories, but this one had multiple different plot lines that made it unique.
In certain sections, it was a bit corny (if they said "down bad" one more time, Taylor Swift would roll her eyes). And the book scenes were a bit jumpy. Scene to scene would jump timelines fast and then there would be a random conflict without detail to what led up to it (like Beau not liking the FMC out of nowhere) or random stuff thrown in that didn't add anything to the book (like the jeep crash).
The book got repetitive in some early chapters. Sometimes, I thought I'd accidentally read something already because it was familiar, but the same sort of thoughts had already been spoken in a prior chapter. There were a lot of "flashback" scenes that just repeated paragraphs already written that were easy to recall without that. Where some things jumped, other things were restated over and over.
What I loved was that instead of an act 3 breakup, I felt the author did a good job of solving those conflicts up front. By 30% in, I felt their communication skills were great and was so hoping to avoid the predictable, ridiculous breakup at the end every book has. This book showed an actual healthy relationship with no breakup and instead, the conflicts were character individual and complex. I felt the author brought up hard issues with grace and it was done well.
I loved Stella and Colton so much. They made each other strong and helped each other heal. They had such good communication and I enjoyed that there wasn’t a 3rd act breakup. Stella and Colton have great chemistry emotionally and physically 👀🌶️ I also enjoyed the relationships between the main and side characters and the storyline was a nice change of pace even though it’s a hockey romance it wasn’t all about hockey or super hockey heavy. I thought the issues concerning each characters traumas and mental health issues were very well done. I also loved all of the hockey boys and I’m very excited for book 2 and to see who else gets a book!
This book does touch on heavy topics so please read content warning at the beginning!!
This book has: ✔️Hockey ✔️College Romance ✔️Mental health rep ✔️Dislike to Lovers ✔️He falls first ✔️Open door spice (med)
Favorite Quote🫶🏻 - “Hey, asshole, out of everyone in this room, I’m the least slutty, thank you very much”
I received this book as an ARC an am leaving an honest review. This book is so well written but check your triggers before reading. There’s a strong mental health component, healing after a traumatic experience on many occasions and so much grief.
Stella moves to Pennsylvania after a horrible experience at a party left her feeling traumatised and trapped. She needed a new start where she knew he wouldn’t be there. She starts at a new university with her focus on becoming a PT. She understandably doesn’t trust men. At all. Until Colt shows her that not all men are like that and that he can be trusted.
Colt is a very talented hockey player, just ask him. His cocky, fast and maybe a little too good. He manages to tear down Stella’s walls within a few weeks. Then he gets injured and everything’s changed. He doesn’t remember the last two years of his life. He doesn’t remember her. Will she stay or will she leave him like everyone else does?
I cannot wait to read more of Sarah’s books! The chemistry, relationships and spicy scenes in this book were so good!
Gosh this book was great. Pacing was great, themes were great, characters were great, writing was great. Hockey romances have become one of my favorite books to read, so I thoroughly ate this up.
Loved how the author touched on mental health with both men and women. It was written so well and I really felt that the reader was able to understand the depth of it without being overwhelmed by it.
I always LOVE books that don’t have that third act breakup. Third act breakups shouldn’t even exist in my opinion.
I really enjoyed how Stella and Colt communicated. It was enough communication to see that they were mature adults but not SO much communication that their relationship seemed fake and forced.
The only critique I have was some of the wording. I get that the author was probably trying to keep the dialogue up with the times, but sometimes it felt a little “cringey.” But that’s just my personal preference.
I look forward to the next books in the series!!

Having read the blurb for this book I wanted to read the whole thing. I really enjoyed the spark between Colt and Stella. They had great chemistry from the word go and I respected Colt so much for being Stella's safe person even before they were together. I had a good cry learning all about Colts problems especially after his accident. I really felt his pain especially as I suffer from mental health issues too. This book deals with the issues sensitively and with care. I loved getting to meet the hockey gang and their dynamics between them. I'm looking forward to reading more.
I received an ARC of Comeback Season by Sarah Adkins. I don’t know if I even have words beyond the fact that I ate this book up and devoured it. Stella and Colton have my heart, from everything they endured before they met to working through the events of the book together. Communication was such a central part of their story and the growth and strong foundation they built through the book because of it was heartwarming. I absolutely loved this book and cannot wait to see what comes next for this group of characters.
Stella and Colt meet under unforgettable circumstances. It takes her awhile to warm up to him, because she has huge trust issues when it comes to men. Colt has his own reservations when it comes to relationships due to his history with loss. Just as it seems like they might be starting to figure things out, life throws a huge monkey wrench into their plans. This story was so well written and the characters were so easy to root for. Please read trigger warnings as this story deals with SA and mental health issues. If you love a slow burn sports romance, you’ll love this one!
Not your average hockey romance, it was emotionally deep. I couldn’t predict what was going to happen next and I loved that. The events that happened made both colt and Stella grow as a beautiful strong couple where they healed together. I loved it!
ARC Review - release date of March 31st, 2026 Part of a 5 book interconnected series!
✨ Summary ✨ Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️.5 HEA: Yes POV: Dual (Colt and Stella) Tropes: Mental health rep, friends with benefits, new girl in town, anti-boyfriend, hockey star, injury, he falls first, forced proximity, grief, parental loss (not on page)
Synopses: Stella Anderson was forced to move from her home in southern Georgia to St.Augustine University in Pennsylvania when an accident at a party left her struggling mentally. No boys, no distractions and get into grad school is her plan. Colton Crosby has built a name for himself as the most talented player at St.A’s. Colt appears to be the stereotypical ladies man, but there’s more to him than what people think. He aspires to be captain next season and get an NHL offer. All he wants to do is make his parents proud. Stella and Colt end up being partnered for a project for class where they are forced to spend time together. In this time, they learn to trust each other and confide in one another about their deepest hurts. Colt ends up sustaining a life altering injury that can ultimately change the trajectory of their relationship. They have even more to overcome now.
My thoughts: I loved this book! It was an easy read, but still had good world building and character development. I absolutely loved that mental health was a really big theme in this book! There continues to be such a big stigma around mental health, especially around men and professional sports! We are all human and need to take care of ourselves head to toe! There were tears shed both in sadness and joy! As Sarah’s first novel, this was a good start! There was enough spice and plot building at the same time! I do wish that after the big conflict, there was a little more resolution on Colt’s end. I wish we saw more of his recovery in terms of him having to rebuild his life and relationships. Everyone genuinely needs a Colt in their life. He is loyal to everyone his loves, no questions asked! He did everything he possibly could to show her that not all men fell into the category of men she has been shown in life. I think Sarah did an amazing job of making that a huge theme as well. She also did an amazing job of showing the push back from Stella! She also does a really good job of making the grief be relatable and real. She truly makes the character go through it and not just push it to the way side. I want to thank Sarah, the author, for allowing me to read this before the release! I’m so excited to read the others!
Duel POV: My Fave! Spice: It is present and not overwhelming. The perfect amount that doesn't take away from the story HEA: Of course! <3
Tropes -Friends with benefits - Sports Romance - Tall MMC AND MFC (is that a trope? it should be!) - He falls first - Forced Proximity - Mental health rep
I really enjoyed reading this novel. It focuses on Stella (MFC) and Colt (MMC) and their relationship. I really also love the way Sarah incorporated the mental health rep. I thought it was done very well.
Stella and Colt are both college students studying at Saint Augustine University in Pennsylvania. The first time they meet is definitely not under the best of impressions. The second time they meet isn't much better. Third time's a charm though, that and being paired up to work together on a class project. The more time they spend together, the closer they and the more they help each other and heal each other.
Honestly, I didn't really read much of the description before reading this book. I had the jist and it is a storyline that is right up my alley, so I was all in. Let me tell you, I was not prepared. At about 50%. I was like, what could go wrong? These characters are awesome and they communicate so well. This is too good to be true. Them BAM! A serious injury happened and I was shooketh. Definitely not something I have seen in the many sports romance novels I have read and I loved that.
I really loved the communication between the characters. The side characters are amazing too and I am already looking forward to hopefully hearing all about them. There was some great foreshadowing going on and I am so curious to see if some things play out how I think they will, and even more intrigued to see if they won't.
Sarah is a fantastic author; I think she did a great job with character and story development. There are a few things in the storyline I wish were hit on more in this novel. Who knows, they may appear in the next one. Even if they don't I still really loved the story. Needless to say, Sarah has me hooked and I am looking forward to reading more of her books!
This was my first sports romance — and somehow it completely pulled me in… and I don’t even like sports.
What surprised me most about this book was how much emotional depth it had. Yes, it’s a college hockey romance. Yes, it’s sweet and romantic. But it’s also layered with grief, trauma, healing, and mental health in a way that felt intentional and grounded.
Both Stella and Colt carry real emotional baggage into college. Stella is guarded for understandable reasons and has a hard time trusting men. Colt has experienced profound loss at a young age and it shapes how he moves through the world. I appreciated that his therapy journey was openly discussed — including his continued struggles and the process of coming off medication under medical guidance. That representation felt responsible and human rather than dramatized.
While their relationship develops fairly quickly, it didn’t feel unrealistic to me. Sometimes connection does move fast when two people meet at the right time in their lives. What mattered more was how they showed up for each other — especially when life threw unexpected challenges their way.
And there were definitely moments that caught me off guard emotionally. I don’t tear up easily when reading, but this book got me a few times. The twists added weight and prevented the story from feeling like a straightforward, predictable romance. The obstacles weren’t just minor misunderstandings — they forced real growth.
The spice was well done in my opinion. Present and meaningful, but not over-the-top or excessive. The intimate scenes felt like an extension of their emotional connection rather than just being included for shock value.
If you enjoy: • College romance • Hockey/sports romance • Trauma and healing arcs • Mental health representation • Emotional twists • Moderate, well-written spice
This is absolutely worth picking up.
As someone new to the sports romance genre, this book completely opened that door for me.
I didn’t just enjoy this book—I devoured it. The kind of read where “just one more chapter” turns into half the night gone, and you still don’t regret it.
Colt and Stella completely wrecked me in the best way. The connection? Electric. The tension? Off the charts. And the emotional pull? Absolutely relentless. Their story unfolds so naturally that it feels like you’re right there with them, experiencing every moment in real time.
This isn’t just a romance—it’s layered with themes of healing, trust, and growth. I loved how both characters faced things head-on instead of running from their feelings. Their dynamic felt honest and grounded, and the way they supported each other—especially within their sports—added such a strong, refreshing element to the story.
The slow burn was perfection. Every interaction built something deeper, making the payoff that much more satisfying. And can we talk about the chemistry? Because WOW. When it hits, it hits.
Emotionally, this book delivers everything—sweet moments, gut-punch feelings, and yes… scenes that will absolutely have you blushing. The balance of heart and heat was chef’s kiss perfection.
Also, no unnecessary drama or frustrating breakup trope? Instant win.
If you love college sports romance, found family vibes, and characters that feel real enough to root for, this one is a must-read. It easily lands among my top favorites in the genre—and I already know I’ll be rereading.
Now excuse me while I impatiently wait for book two… because I am not ready to let these characters go. 📚✨
Thank you to the author for this ARC for my honest opinion!
This was such a good read. I went in expecting a fun college sports romance, and I got so much more. Comeback Season gives us hockey golden boy meets a guarded, no-nonsense heroine, and the tension? Brilliant. Colt surprised me in the best way. On paper he screams cocky campus heartbreaker, but there’s way more depth to him than the reputation suggests. And Stella? I adored her. She’s strong without being cold, vulnerable without being whiny, and watching her slowly let her guard down had me fully invested. Colt, hands down, became my favourite character by far. The chemistry between them builds so naturally. It’s flirty, it’s charged, but it also has real emotional weight behind it. I loved that this wasn’t just about attraction; it was about trust, growth, and both of them confronting messy, complicated feelings. I did feel that there were a few holes left open... maybe on purpose? We are introduced to so many characters as if there will be a series on them too... and I'm excited for that! I wish I could say more, but I would absolutely be spoiling too much. Give it a read if you want something with a little more depth than your average hockey romance, but please check the trigger warnings. It gets deep in some places, which is definitely not a bad thing, but there are mentions of losing both parents, SA, and sports injuries and such. Don't let that put you off, though! Give it a go. It's a brillant start to what I hope will be a series <3
I legitimately could not put this book down! We have all read and loved a million college hockey romances, so I went into Comeback Season by Sarah Adkins thinking I knew exactly what I was getting. Boy, was I wrong; it is just so good, and it completely blew me away.
The setup sounds classic: Stella is trying to keep her head down and avoid boys after transferring to St. Augustine University to escape her tragic past, but gets stuck on a class project with #14 Colton Crosby, the star of the hockey team. Forced proximity at its finest!
But you guys, I completely, hopelessly fell in love with Colt. On paper, he is the stereotypical, lusted-after party boy. But the depth he actually has? He is just a guy trying to make his parents proud and carrying so much weight on his shoulders. Watching these two slowly drop their walls and actually heal each other, rather than just work on their project, was beautiful.
Without giving anything away, life delivers a massive, blindside hit, and the emotional journey they go on is so incredibly real. It has the perfect amount of swoony, fun moments, but it also gets incredibly deep.
Easiest 5 stars ever! Since this is the start of the St. A Knights series, I am already so freaking excited for books 2 through 5. Bring them on!
A massive thank you to Sarah Adkins for the privilege of reading this ARC!
The puck drops on March 31st! Drop everything and add Comeback Season to your Goodreads TBR right now so you don't miss it!
Thank you to Sarah Adkins for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Comeback Season is an uplifting and heartfelt story about resilience, second chances, and finding the strength to move forward after life’s setbacks. The story draws you in as the characters navigate challenges while learning to believe in themselves again.
What stood out most to me was the authenticity of the characters. Their struggles, growth, and determination make their journey feel real and relatable, which adds emotional weight to the story.
The themes of perseverance and personal growth are woven throughout the narrative, creating moments that feel both inspiring and meaningful. Watching the characters rebuild and rediscover their confidence made the story especially rewarding.
For me, this easily earns 5 ⭐ because the emotional journey and hopeful tone made it a memorable and satisfying read.
This is a 5 ⭐ for me because:
• the story highlights resilience and personal growth • the characters feel genuine and relatable • the themes of second chances add depth to the narrative • the story leaves a positive and lasting impression
Inspiring. Heartfelt. Uplifting.
Read this book if you like:
• stories about second chances • emotionally driven narratives • character-focused journeys • uplifting and meaningful reads
There’s something about hockey romance that keeps me coming back for more. When I saw that there were ARCs available for Comeback Season, the blurb drew me in and I leapt at the chance to get stuck back in to M/F college hockey! I am happy to say that I was not disappointed. Stella and Colt worked really well together. They are a surprisingly mature-for-their-age couple who choose to communicate their feelings and work together through the difficult times thrown at them, both past and present. Their characters were well-developed, had depth and were both very likeable. The mental health/trauma plot lines were addressed sensitively and realistically. The spice was well-written and did not overwhelm the plot at all. I also loved that we got several interesting side characters. They were not just there as decoration but contributed meaningfully to the story. They also clearly have their own stories to tell and I am looking forward to seeing more of them in future books! Would suggest one more thorough edit for the few typos found more towards the latter part of the book but these did not affect my enjoyment of the story. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to leave a review early, the book officially releases at the end of March. To future readers, enjoy!
“If anyone, and I mean anyone gives you trouble ever again, I want you to call me. I’ll be there, no matter what.”
WOW! What a debut, I need the other stories right now! 🤩
Stella and Colton meet, but she isn’t too fond of him, so she tries to stay clear. Colton on the other hand tries everything to get her to talk to him. Then they have to work ob a group project together, so they spend a lot of time together. Will they fall in love and manage to navigate everything? Colton and Stella are the perfect couple to start this series! They both got dealt a tricky hand in life, but together they are so strong. I love how they communicate their problems and actually talk to each other. Colton lost both his parents, so he has his best friend Beau and his family as a safety net. Enter Stella and he has a new person who will stand by him and help him navigate through life. Stella just switched University’s after having a little trouble at her old University. But she talks openly with Colton about it, which was so nice to read. I am very happy to see a lot as a couple throughout the book! I love how the friend group just „adopted“ her as their own and she is now one of them! 🫶🏻 I am ready to read about the rest of the boys and their significant others!
Thank you Sarah for the eARC in exchange for an honest review! 🤍
I just finished my ARC read of Comeback Season, the first book in the St. A Knights series, and I really enjoyed it.
Stella arrives at St. Augustine University hoping for a fresh start after a difficult experience back home. Her focus is simple: keep her head down, get into grad school, and avoid distractions. Enter Colton Crosby — star hockey player, campus heartthrob, and not nearly as one-dimensional as everyone assumes.
What starts as a rough first impression turns into a forced partnership for a class project, and from there the story slowly builds into something really special.
I loved both Stella and Colt. They’re not only talented athletes but also incredibly intelligent and emotionally aware characters (most of the time), which made their dynamic feel refreshing. Their relationship develops through mutual support and genuine care, and I loved seeing them help each other heal.
Tropes:
Strangers to lovers
He falls first
Athlete × athlete
Star player MMC
College sports romance
Trauma recovery & healing journey
Protective MMC
A little sweet, a little spicy 🌶️
There’s also an unexpected twist that definitely caught me off guard. I won’t spoil anything though….
Overall this was a heartfelt, character-driven sports romance with strong emotional depth, and I’m excited to see where the St. A Knights series goes next.
“Comeback Season” is the first book in the “St. A Knights Series” by debut author Sarah Adkins. It is everything you expect from a sports romance with a touch of alpha male thrown in. I’m very happily hooked - I did not want it to end! Once I started reading, I could not put this book down! At times you will laugh, you will cry, get angry and frustrated - most of all, you will love the twists! This book will charm “the pants off you” and leave you going back for more. This is a lovely book that will keep you hooked! It has fun, laughs, intrigue, twists that you do not expect, and physical attraction. You will fall in love with Colt and Stella. They compliment each in some many ways - faults and all.
“Radiant. Beautiful. Perfection. Mine. Adjectives echoed in my head, all of them accurate and yet none of them good enough to fully encompass the way she lights up the room simply by existing. No word is strong enough to describe the power she has over me.”
I was hooked by the first chapter. This is a lovely book that will keep you hooked! It has fun, laughs, intrigue, twists that you do not expect, and physical attraction. I thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful love story. From page to page, chapter to chapter, from cover to cover - you will enjoy this beautiful story. This book will not disappoint! Highly recommended 😊
Absolutely LOVED this quick read of a book! This is the first book by Sarah Adkins and it doesn't disappoint. It is a dual POV sports romance that hooks you in from the very first line! Stella Anderson, the FMC, has had a hard life growing up and her trust in the opposite sex is pretty much non existent. Then she gets the most awkward intro to Colton and its game on from there! Colton is a hockey player through and through! If you love your MMC with a little bit of emotional baggage and A LOT of swagger then you will love him and his boys! While this book is a hockey sports romance, the female main character is also a college athlete. It is a dual POV book that lands mostly in the MMC's world. I would have LOVED to see more of Stella's world and interactions or non-interactions with her roomate, her teammates, and her family. There are some variations in time skipped and I think it would have been great to have some more from both sides. Overall this book just leaves you wanting more from both the characters and their worlds. It's a great first step in the world of St. A's university and I can't wait to read more!
This is a really good contemporary hockey romance. Star hockey player falls for a girl that he may not normally go for. The storyline is quick moving and really makes you feel all the emotions right along with the characters.
The character development was really good. There is a thorough & relevant amount of backstory for the FMC & MMC. The development and backstories of the secondary characters was really good, also. It gave more insight as to why some of the reactions or conflict happens.
I LOVED the inclusion of mental health in this book. It was so well written and really captures what it’s like dealing with mental health struggles as both the patient and their friends/family. There is such a stigma around mental health - especially in the sports world - so this was really great to see in this book.
This is the first book in the series and I’m definitely looking forward to reading the rest when it comes out!
