Addictive, spellbinding, and angst-filled—Between Lark and Lore plunges readers into a world of ancient magic, slow-burn desire, and two men who'd burn the world down for her. Perfect for fans of Jennifer L. Armentrout, Carissa Broadbent, Raven Kennedy, and LJ Andrews. *****
SECRETS FRAY
The Aetherbind is weakening and creatures of legend slip through the cracks between realms. Far beneath the myth-ridden peaks of Midst Fall, something ancient stirs—something that should stay buried.
DESIRES TANGLE
Caelora has spent years hunting the man responsible for her mother's death. The problem? He's an Elder—and her father. But vengeance was never going to be hers alone.
Kaden, the reckless healer whose easy charm masks deeper scars, refuses to let her face the dark alone.
And Jace, the stoic runemaster who once carried her to safety, won't let her fade into the shadows.
FATES UNRAVEL
As enemies close in and ancient magic stirs in her blood, Caelora must face a truth more dangerous than vengeance—she was never meant to disappear.
Because some things don't wither in the dark. They bloom.
***** Don't miss the start of a new romance in the Fate of the Embered series—where vengeance, healing, and the fragile line between control and surrender collide.
Rowyn Adelaide is an insatiable romance reader, advanced practice MSW social worker, and the author of the Fate of the Embered series. Her debut novel, Of Withering Dreams, launched the dark fantasy romance series with a haunting blend of passion and peril. Her work fuses atmospheric world-building with emotionally driven romance, often exploring themes of transformation, angst, and resilience. When she’s not writing or devouring stacks of romance novels, she’s usually globe-trotting, rocking out at concerts, counting down to spooky season, or singing karaoke (very poorly). She lives in the Midwest with her favorite creatures: her husband, their dog Audrey Shepburn (aka the goodest girl that ever lived), and their chaotic cat Stormy, who is equal parts villain and sidekick. Between Lark and Lore (Fate of the Embered #4) had me fully caught between which man was going to ruin my life more because apparently choosing is not one of my strengths. The magic? Incredible. The tension? Absolutely painful. The emotional damage? Present and accounted for. This new story arc gives us dark fantasy, dangerous magic, revenge, secrets, found family, and a why choose romance that had me questioning all of my life choices. One MMC is protective and broody, the other brings the charm and banter, and somehow I became attached to everyone. The slow burn in this one is REAL. The relationships take their time, the emotions run deep, and the tension had me constantly waiting for the next moment between them. And the world? Dark, immersive, and easy to get lost in without feeling overwhelming. If you love magical worlds, morally gray characters, emotional angst, slow-burn tension, and books that make you wonder how you’re supposed to survive multiple love interests at the same time, Between Lark and Lore deserves a spot on your TBR. 🖤✨
Español: Between Lark and Lore (Fate of the Embered #4) me tuvo completamente atrapada intentando decidir cuál de estos hombres iba a arruinar mi vida primero, porque claramente elegir no es uno de mis talentos. La magia? Increíble. ¿La tensión? Dolorosa. ¿El daño emocional? Presente y confirmado. 🖤✨
I had the pleasure of receiving this as an e-ARC and voluntarily will be giving my honest review. Wow!! This was a phenomenal read!! Rowyn did it again with this book she did not disappoint!! The world building was absolutely phenomenal made me feel like i was there with the characters!! Chefs kiss!! I devoured this book!!
“This book introduces a new romantic arc within the Fate of the Embered series and can be enjoyed on its own, but readers will get the most out of the story by starting with the original trilogy.
BETWEEN LARK AND LORE is a new romance in the FATE OF THE EMBERED series—an epic dark fantasy romance perfect for fans of slow burn, why choose (MMF), morally gray characters, age gap romance, angst, reluctant allies to lovers, open-door spice, character-driven plots, mythological creatures, rich world-building, a diverse cast, a fierce heroine with unique powers, elemental magic, and high stakes. Fans of Jennifer L. Armentrout, Carissa Broadbent, Raven Kennedy, and LJ Andrews—this is for you”
Ancient powers, secrets galore, complex characters, and flirty banter.
Caelora, Kaden, and Jace are on a quest to find Elders that fled. Caelora has vengeance on her mind, Kaden is still healing from all that he's endured in the last several months, and Jace is... quite the enigma. What they find on their journey is a place only legends mention, no one expected it to exist. Staying in this place slows their progress but reveals much that may help them along their journey. Caelora discovers hidden powers within herself, Jace learns of his past and begins solving a complex puzzle set up by his father, and Kaden... Well, Kaden is masking who he is, refusing to face reality until it hits him head on.
These characters are dynamic and banter in a way that makes me giggle. I loved being back in Midst Fall and expanding on the world building. There are WYVERNS!! Woo! So cool learning more about the lore around the ancients and these tales that no one thought were based on truth. The romance is very much a slooow burn and has little spice in this first book, but an MMF romance is promised and I fully expect Rowyn to deliver like she does best! FYI I'm a biiiig fan of Jace with his mysterious charm and runic tattoos, *swoon*. Can't wait for the next installment!
to note: rated 4.25 stars. I found this book to be a building block in the series. Was anticipating more of the romance and less lull while these characters figure things out. Written well and know more greatness is to come. Give Between Lark and Lore a shot! I also highly recommend picking up the first trilogy in this world in Of Withering Dreams
This was a goood book! It's a new trilogy that can be read on it's own, but there's references to the previous trilogy readers may not understand so just have that in mind!
Going in I initially didn't know anything because I had not read the previous trilogy but for me that didn't matter for the experience of the story! The worldbuilding was easy to follow and I liked how this triangle of characters worked together and how their dynamic played out made sense. Love triangles can be tricky but this was a very well done execution!
I very much look forward to the next book!
Thank you for the gifted book, I leave my review voluntary.
ROWYN! You wonderfully brilliant woman!!! You did it again. Another 5 star read. Another beautiful story. I cannot wait for part 2 and 3 and all the parts to come. You have such a wonderful way of grabbing attention and making people care about the characters, flaws and all!
Caelora, Jace, and Kaden are all such unique people. They’re so different from each other but yet they find themselves all entwined with each other. Their stories are so sad and so heartbreaking, but I’m so ready to see them find their happy endings (and maybe all together 😉). Thanks for such a great story Rowyn! 5/5
Between Lark and Lore is a promising start to the next trilogy in the Fate of the Embered series. As always, Rowyn’s writing is beautiful and I enjoyed seeing the relationships between the three main characters grow. The pace of the book felt like it started a little slow but it may have just been me as I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump. I flew through the last 25% though! I look forward to seeing what happens next!
Between Lark and Lore is a novel that asks a singular question - what defines us as individuals?
Taking place immediately after the events of Of Hollowed Stars, we now follow Caelora Aundyne, Kaden Larkin, and Jace Barden as they try to find the elders that had fled the scene. Each of them are there for their own reasons, all of them hiding secrets from one another. And more then anything, all three of our main cast believe that no one will understand their pain. As we progress, they learn this is far from the truth, bonding over experiences and opening up in ways they never thought possible.
The pacing of the plot, as well as the character development, felt realistic which I appreciated. I also love how the romance moments didn’t feel forced, but rather deserved. It was a beautiful way to showcase how much trauma can affect our interactions with others, how hard it is to move on from it. How, in worst case scenarios, it fuels our every decision to find the closure we feel we need. And sometimes, the person we want isn’t always the person we need.
I resonated deeply with the overarching themes of identity and what truly dictates who we are. To an extent, all three in our main cast deal with this. Some deal with one or another more directly than others, but that doesn’t make either any less powerful and I can’t wait to see them explored deeper in future installments.
Between Lark and Lore begs the question of what defines us as individuals, then answers it with grace while leaving us gladly waiting for more -
It is not our bloodlines, families, or trauma that chooses who we are. Rather, it is our decisions that showcase our true nature in the end.
If you thought the last book in the Fate of Embers series was it, you will be happy to know there is a book 4. Rowyn Adelaide provides us with a story of 3 side characters from the first 3 books in Between Lark and Lore. While still part of the same series, it is a new adventure for our 3 MCs. Rowyn captivates her audience with spectacular world building, tension filled relationships, and a stunning storyline. If you haven’t read the first 3, you can start with this book, but there may be some confusion with references made to the former books. I, of course, recommend reading the whole series!
Caelora, Jace, and Kaden each bring their own uniqueness to the storyline. These 3 have been present throughout the series, but more as side characters. Now they are front and center and you get to know them very well. The dynamic between these three is curated so well, Rowyn definitely teasing her readers before going full throttle. While they each have their own struggles they are dealing with, they create a sort of family, watching out for each other. Having all 3 of their POVs in the story gives readers an up close and personal look into each of their minds and how they are coping with their journey.
Caelora has past trauma that she tries not to let flow into her present, but often fails. She is broken, but determined to find answers for herself. Kaden continues to protect Caelora, which keeps the pull between them alive. Yet with the newest addition, we see a side of Kaden we haven’t seen yet come out. Jace has joined these two, but his white knight syndrome keeps putting him in the line of fire for those he cares about. They are all so different, while at the same time, perfectly matched to create a dynamic trio.
Rowyn has pushed her writing into new heights for her with this book. Keeping her readers in a world they already love, with familiar characters but a closer look into their psyche, had me plastered to the pages of this book. While there is romance, it isn’t at the forefront of the story, more like a fruit that is wanted, but just beyond reach. The story definitely keeps things interesting between our MCs and I can’t wait to see what Rowyn has in store for them.
As always, review any author notes before reading.
What to Expect: ⚔️Why Choose 💞Morally Gray Characters ⚔️Black Cat FMC 💞Golden Retriever MMC ⚔️Grey Wolf MMC 💞Age Gap Romance ⚔️Greek Mythology Inspired 💞Forbidden Magic ⚔️Queer Normative World 💞Touch Her and 💀
Seryn and Gavrel have run off in the sunset, leaving side characters Kaden (Lark), Caelora (Lore) and er Jace to take the reins. We are instantly immersed in discovering new areas of Midstfall through the eyes of each character in their search for answers to the hereditary riddle fruits hanging from each others family trees. Mind those plums!
You'd be forgiven for assuming this could be the start of a blossoming why choose, a twisted triangle of trysts. Two guys, one girl close proximity. Many opportunities to make the most of togetherness where intimacy can really thrive....I was patient! I really was. After the wonderfully executed adventures and delicious rendezvous of Seryn, Gavrel and Co... I was looking forward to more of the same sort of spicy anticipation. Kaden has a deck of card tricks up his sleeve - Caelora you have him mistaken for cheese! Yes good things take time but not an eternity 😫 Stubbornness isn't a bad trait, not at all but you gotta have balance you know. The more you deny yourself of the real pleasures in life the faster you age. And my dear, youth doesn't last forever 💅
And Jace... Listen up! Eyes over here buddy. All work and no play makes Jace a dull boy. Why do you have to take things so seriously dude. Yea yea you're following in your father's footsteps on the road to completing his vision by being the masterful decipherer of complex symbolism ... Bravo Bravo. When was the last time you let your hair down, got loose and had some hanky panky in between burning the midnight oil? Hmmm
Ok so while we are fond of our main characters and they mean well they really do.. they are just lacking the introduction they so rightly deserved.. It was hard to feel connected to them from the start. It was hard to care about what they were to one another, what their purpose was as the story unfolded. The pacing is rather slow until the last third however Rowyn's deliciously descriptive writing takes away some of the pain, leaving you peacefully drifting along until you're snagged by a wyvern. YES A WYVERN!! What a way to wake up!
However, Rowyn isn't one to disappoint and if the previous books are anything to go by we shall expect more emotive depth in character relationships and less beating around the bush. As well as more WYVERNS 🥹
I have been with Rowyn since the beginning - her first book. Every single one is a banger, including this one!
Between Lark and Lore is the beginning of a new storyline in her Fate of the Embered Series. You do NOT have to read the previous books to read this book! It is amazing on it's own, but read as Book Four it is even more AMAZING!
My favorite character in this world is Breena, but alas, she does not make an appearance in this book. It was still amazing!
This story follows Caelora, Kaden, and Jace as the set out to find the Elders that have fled. Caelora (also referred to as Lore, Lora, and Wraith LOL) very much wants to fight everyone. She is a spitfire! They make a discovery on their journey that only exists in legends. The time they spend on this journey delays them, but it also casts light on so many things! Jace learns about his past and his father, Caelora discovers that she has hidden powers, and Kaden is hiding behind his mask until he cannot any longer.
I loved all the banter between the characters! Caelora is just firey and I love that about her. She doesn't let anyone boss her around or tell her what to do. Plus wyverns!!!! That is always a plus! I can't wait to learn even more about these characters! I learned a lot in this book and it definitely put so many things together for me in this world! You learn more about the ancients and the legends surrounding them.
The romance is a very slow burn, but I don't ever mind that ha ha! It is less spicy than the first triology, but I expect the spice to turn up in the next installment!
I think this was very well written. I love this world and the magic contained in it. Not only that, but I rated this 4.5 stars / rounded up to 5 stars! Definitely add this to your TBR, and if you haven't read the first 3 books, pick them up now!
Thank you as always to the author for having me on her ARC team!
Every time I think Rowyn Adelaide can’t possibly pull me any deeper into this world, she proves me wrong. There is just something about her writing that completely mesmerizes me. Once I start one of these books, the outside world pretty much disappears.
I’m usually not a love triangle or why choose reader, but for some reason this series just works for me and I absolutely eat it up. The relationships feel emotional and natural, and I find myself invested in all of them.
What I love most about this series is how character driven it is. Caelora has been carrying so much past trauma while also keeping plenty of secrets of her own and I loved watching her continue to work through everything she’s faced. I felt so connected to her journey in this book.
I also loved Kaden. Even while dealing with his own struggles and questions about his self-worth, he continues to support Caelora in such a genuine way. And then there’s Jace. I still feel like there’s so much we don’t know about him. He’s more serious and focused on helping Caelora fulfill her quest, which only makes me more curious to uncover everything he’s keeping close to the chest.
Between the danger, mystery, emotional moments and growing stakes, I was completely immersed from beginning to end. Rowyn balances the fantasy elements and romance so well and the twists and revelations kept me turning the pages because I always needed to know what would happen next.
If you’re someone who enjoys high fantasy set in a mysterious world full of secrets, high stakes, multiple POVs, age gap romance and a slow burn you’ll want to savor, you definitely don’t want to miss this series.
Honestly, this series has become one of those worlds I never want to leave and once I finished this book I was reminded yet again why I keep coming back…and yes, be prepared, because that ending absolutely left me needing book five immediately.
Between Lark and Lore is the first book of a new trilogy by Rowyn Adelaide.
This story follows Jace, Kaden and Caelora as they continue to find the Elders who have fled. We learn more about these three characters that we previousoy only got snippets of. Caelora is seeking vengeance against her father, Kaden is still reeling from the events of the first trilogy, but becoming his own man and Jace. Jace is stoic and guarded. He keeps things to himself and is still a bit of a mystery.
This trio adventures through the wilds and discover a place and people from their myths and legends. While they are learning about this new place and people, Caelora discovers a new undercurrent to her magic that could help them all, but could also prove to be dangerous. Kaden is making jokes and deflecting while Jace hides himself while he discovers who he is, who his father was and the secret his father set in motion.
As with the first trilogy, this book is full of witty banter, magic, wyverns and mystery. The burn is slow, slower than I anticipated and the pacing was a little slow, but it is book 1. Blocks need to be placed to build where we are going, there is still A LOT of story to tell and world to build.
I really enjoyed learning more about the Ancients and the lore that surrounds them. As they say, myths are all based on true stories. I am also looking forward to seeing where Rowyn takes these three characters and their romance. She has said its a MMF, so buckle up!
Overall, BLL is getting 4 stars. I love this world and the story being told. I was hoping for more romance and action, but again its book 1. The action (not romantic) did happen closer to the end of the book. I am warming up to the characters as well.
I highly recommend reading the first trilogy and picking up Between Lark and Lore.
*I was given this book as an eArc but my review is based solely on my own thoughts and opinions*
While I own the first book, I have yet to read it. It had rave reviews. This was marketed as could be read as a standalone but suggests reading the first series beforehand. I went in not knowing at all about the world and what happened previously, wanting to see if it indeed could be read as a standalone. While the beginning brief recap and synopsis of the first series was helpful, I highly suggest reading the first series before this because I am lost. It feels like a sequel but a continuation of the first. While I can keep up on a good amount of things, I feel like I’m losing so much information. It’s kind of like reading sunrise of the reaping before reading the hunger games. Speaking of this reminds me a lot of that and like a mix between the matrix and the Witcher. It has major fantasy dystopian vibes which I’m here for.
It’s beautifully written and an engaging story. Although it is high fantasy, for me personally, I have trouble keeping up with aspects of the story. These types I enjoy but mainly like in shows or movies where it’s easier for me to understand. Nonetheless, it’s a very cool and fun concept. I like that there is some humor but not where it takes away from the story. One of my fav lines:
"He knows what it is. Tell him to finish it." He cocked his head to the side. "Before he finds something else to rune." Kaden chuckled. "Did you just make a pun, Aldric?"
Not sure how I feel about Jayce knowing Kaden when he was a kid. Give me weird vibes with a possible relationship for the future. I wasn’t expecting that big of an age gap. I don’t personally cause that’s just too big of an age gap.
First of all, huge thank you to Rowyn for an eARC so I could dive back in the world of Midst Fall!
While being its own plot line from Seryn and Gavrel's story, this follows Kaden, Caelora, and Jace. We start off with the three of them on a journey. Kaden is emotionally torn and has a lot of self doubt. He feels more comfortable with his own magic, but not sure where he belongs. Caelora is a secretive character where we haven't gotten the full background, but are starting to understand who she is. Jace, our magistrate, is also secretive, but mostly that he is rune master and is working to find out all the puzzles in their world.
There is definite character development with some slower plot movement. Knowing that this is planned as another 3 book series (I believe), I anticipate more plot development in the new book between where the characters left off.
Also, there were many feelings I had while reading. Is this a Why Choose situation? Does Caelora (Lore) have exclusive feelings for Kaden (Lark)? Who is Jace to them, and how does he fit into the picture? Well.. this is definitely a slower burn so be patient.
Overall, Jace was my favorite of the three, although I do have some questions between his age compared to Lore and Lark, and when he developed his feelings. He seems significantly older. He's methodical, loves puzzles, and seems to know more than we know.
I had wished the plot had moved a bit faster for me, although this pace may work for others. Rowyn has a beautiful writing style that blends high fantasy elements into this mysterious world.
Tropes: - Multi POV - Wyverns! - Slow burn - Age Gap - Secrets - High Stakes
This was definitely an adventure filled book, one of fights and battles and of course internal battles and demons the characters face along the way.
I really like Caelora, the FMC. She has a lot of past trauma which does bleed into the present. And of course her actions from the first trilogy brought her into the events happening in this book. She is on a journey for answers and maybe find herself along the way. She is accompanied by Kaden and Jace.
Kaden of course is also healing from traumas of the past. Both from a young age and of course from what he had to endure in the pods. I really loved how he is just so protective over Caelora, even when he didn't know why he needed to be. Their relationship just develops so naturally throughout the story, you find yourself believing they are two just wounded souls meant to be together.
And of course there is Jace. The smart one of the trio and the one who just has the need to sacrifice himself for answers and to protect those he cares for. The banter between him and Kaden is just so good. Like they (or more accurately, Kaden) just live to annoy the other. Just in the best way possible. And of course Jace has a past event with Caelora that just makes your heart just hurt. Caelora is just someone he feels compelled to protect.
I really cannot wait to read more about this trio. I am impatiently waiting for them all to realize they need and belong to each other....like seriously they all need to get on board with that 🤣
This story is definitely one of adventure, passion, love, friendship, mystery, and sacrifice. And I just cannot wait for more!
Between Lark and Lore continues the story of Caelora, Kaden and Jace, as they are hunting down the Elder who killed her mother. Who also happens to be her father.
There is a lot of discovery in this book, about the characters and their backstory, their own traumas and pain, what motivates them in their search now. It dives into trauma without feeling overwhelming, just very heartfelt and actually quite relatable despite my not living in a fantasy world.
Jace, oh my. I think Jace might be one of my favourite characters from the whole series now. He's reserved, but you can tell he feels deeply for Caelora and Kaden. As he learns about his family history and his father's role you start to learn more about how his mind works too, and what that might mean for his future. I was also really interested in the new characters they meet, plus wyverns, and we got a lot of info that helps to make sense of some of the happenings in the first trilogy.
The pacing was great in the beginning as we're learning more about the world and characters, but it really picks up towards the end when the big things start going down. The romance is a slow burn, quietly yearning for more that will develop in the future. If you've read of any Rowyn's other books you'll know that her writing is beautiful, lyrical and flowing and it builds a world that you can genuinely picture in your mind.
Technically you can start with Between Lark and Lore, since it's the start of a new romance story, but I think it will be best enjoyed if you have read the first trilogy in the series, starting with Of Withering Dreams.
Thank you Rowyn for the advance copy of Between Lark and Lore.
Three unmatched companions traveling the mountains and terrain in search of vengeance, but finding something entirely different along the way. A adventure with secrets revealed and unknown runes that touches deeper than any ember.
I give this book 3 out of 5 stars, because for me as a hopeless romantic, there were too little romance, too much of nothing really happening and at one time this one thing was described three times in a row just in different ways, and i am not a fan of repetition like that.
But i did enjoy the story as a hole, and enjoy the way Rowyn writes. Its a certain writing style with enough mystery and poetry that is just fitting for a fantasy novel. She has the right amount of secrecy, and the reveal is done in a smooth and believable way. I did enjoy the characters, even though i got so freaking frustrated that no one pushes the other for more information even though they know there is more to be said. And I really enjoyed the little interactions that wasn't clear if they wanted to kiss each other or punch each other. And at times it was a hint of something more, but i cant answer if its a friendship or more, which is actually fun. And i love that we get to follow the characters that were more to the side in books 1-3, and i really want to read the next book to see what happens next with everything revealed.
For me this book felt like young adult fantasy, and therefore can recommend the books for a bit younger crew (15+) that enjoys fantasy books with more adventure than romance.
A great expansion of the world we found with Seryn and Gavrel!
I really appreciated seeing Kaden grow up a bit from the original trilogy. He's still a bit of a prankster and plays around, but he knows when to buckle down and focus.
After Caelora's not so great actions with Seryn in the Withering Trials, I wasn't convinced that I needed her story. But her history is just so tragic! And Jace is so intertwined with her as she grew into herself, it's no wonder she feels this connection with him.
We get little hints of a why-choose situation between Caelora, Kaden, and Jace, but we really only explore the beginnings of a romance between Caelora and Kaden when Jace disappears. I hope that this gets explored further in the next book! The tension brewing between Kaden and Jace is just too juicy to ignore!
Unfortunately, I think this story just wasn't fully for me. I wasn't really able to get engrossed in the story, and each of the different POVs sounded the same to me. So I was really only able to tell who was speaking by the chapter header and the mention of the other two names in the chapter. And sadly I really felt like putting off finishing this book. Perhaps I'll revisit it later.
If you love dark fantasy romance with a slow burn, vengeance, why choose, morally grey characters, age gap, reluctant allies to lovers, unique powers, elemental magic, high stakes, touch her and perish, power/control/surrender, and characters that embody black cat x golden retriever x grey wolf, then you should check out Between Lark and Lore!

Rowyn has the most beautiful written language that flows elegantly with vivid descriptions. It's one of my favorite things about her books. I can actually feel every sensation of being within the world and moving through the pages with the characters. And her characters? They're phenomenal. They have distinct personalities that feel like they could be real people. I loved getting to know them. The tension was thick from the start and I loved how the chemistry felt natural and honestly so beautiful. But it is a very slow burn and most of the romance is internalized and subtle. Even though there is spice. The burn was so slow the spice almost felt rushed.
The lore is setup just right to understand what's going on but with enough secrets and twists to keep it interesting. I also just loved discovering more world. Every little piece we uncover is just another beautiful part of Rowyn's creation. It's all so clever and fun to read. Such rich and lush worldbuilding. That was the definite highlight.
I kind of think it would have worked better in third person just because the detailed writing made the characters feel a little unnatural in the way they took in so much about the world and the facial expressions of people walking behind or sitting beside them. They were slightly too observant and the voice between povs felt too similar (even though they do have distinct personalities per their dialogue and actions, it just feels like there was a narrator versus they were narrating, if that makes sense). But it was such a minor observation it didnt affect my reading experience in a negative way at all. The pacing is much slower considering how detailed the writing is. But I did find the entirety of the story quite lovely and a great read. The writing is just so beautiful.
This felt very much like a bridge between where the story has been and where it’s ultimately heading. While the plot spends a lot of time laying groundwork for future books, it never felt wasted thanks to the steady stream of discoveries, expanding lore, and character development.
One of my favorite aspects was learning more about the ancient history of the world. As Caelora, Kaden, and Jace continue their journey, more pieces of the puzzle begin to fall into place, revealing long-forgotten secrets, hidden truths, and legends that may not be legends after all. The deeper exploration of the ancients was fascinating, and I will never complain about the addition of wyverns.
The characters continue to be the heart of the story for me. Their friendships feel genuine, the banter is effortless, and I enjoyed watching each of them grow as the stakes around them continue to rise. Their dynamic keeps the quieter moments just as engaging as the bigger reveals.
I did find myself wishing for a little more progression on the romance front, and at times, the story felt more focused on uncovering answers than moving the relationships forward. That said, this very much feels like a setup for much bigger events to come, and I’m interested to see where the next installment takes these characters.
Thank you to Rowyn for entrusting me with a gifted eARC!
Between Lark and Lore by Rowyn Adelaide Fate of the Embered book 4 (new story arc trilogy)
Dark fantasy romance Multiple POV Why choose (MMF) Touch her and find out All the morally grey Black cat x golden retriever x grey wolf Queernormative world Slow burn to spicy Greek mythology vibes/inspiration Hidden world and high stakes Student teacher age gap Traumatic past Consent king Continued world building and interesting magic There are wyverns!
Caelora was never meant to survive the shadows… but some things don’t wither in the dark. They bloom.
While this new story arc can be read without reading the first trilogy, in my opinion it is best read in order to get the full effect of this atmospheric world and the characters! Time for Team Kaden to shine in this trilogy! We have three unlikely companions on the edge of dislike that slowly grew to being intwined before they even realized it! I enjoyed getting to see more of this world and a new location with those wyverns mentioned above! And I'm always here for a good hate/dislike to love situation and then fighting feelings along the way. Will be looking forward to the next part of this series!
I received a copy of this as an ARC from the author.
This book is incredibly well written and the character work is excellent. Overall an enjoyable experience for anyone who enjoys well fleshed out fantasy with a dash of romance.
I only took a star off for personal enjoyment because I did think that:
1. I think that while the summary of the previous books was helpful, it felt very info heavy on the front end. Which really is not the fault of the book and more of a personal preference. 2. While I think the characters are well written I think the POV changes were a little hard for me personally. 3. It was a little higher fantasy then I was expecting, which is not a bad thing I just think that reading the tropes provided to me in the blurb may have slightly mislead me. The book was still very enjoyable just not exactly what I was expecting.
Overall my big take away is that I think if you enjoyed the original series you will like this one! I am going to give the original series a go and give this one a reread and report back.
I look forward to seeing where this goes and I look forward to reading more from Rowyn!
I just love this world. It was fun to go back but from a different perspective where we got to explore more of the land and come across some hidden lore. I'm very interested to see where we go from here!
This book definitely felt more character development based than plot driven. The plot felt slow at times, as the characters learned all this new information and came to terms with how it affected them and their relationships with each other.
Lora is a complex character. She has so many secrets hidden under that armor of hers. I'm happy we saw some of them come to light, but I'm curious what else is hidden behind those masks.
I adore Kaden. I loved him in the first series and my love for him continued to grow throughout this book. My heart hurts for him, but despite his self doubt, he continues to put himself out there and be the support that Lora needs. I can't wait to see how his relationship with Jace grows.
I want more Jace. His chapters definitely gave us some insight into his character, but I felt I needed more from his interactions with Kaden and Lora. He didn't seem as much of a main character as they did, even though his presence was very noticeable.
I love Rowyn's style of writing with her world building and lyrical descriptions. This is the first book of a new trilogy in the Fate Of The Embered series. While you could technically start it without reading the first trilogy, my suggestion is don't. You should read Of Withering Dreams and the other 2 books first. The world building, the backgrounds of the characters, and even past characters are mentioned so you will get so much more context out of reading the other books first.
This is definitely a slow burn, and it's setting up the rest of the story, so it takes a bit to pick up the pace. I was about 35% through before I felt like I was invested. I did have a harder time connecting with the characters, and that may be as it was in first person pov, and sometimes I had to go back to the chapter header to figure out whose pov I was reading.
I do predict that when the next book comes things will be moving at a faster pace and that there is a lot more to come. I'm looking forward to Kaden's story and how everything works out.
So to sum up, read the first trilogy of Fate Of The Embered first, and stick with Between Lark And Lore because I believe things are ramping up!
Thank you to the author for a gifted copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Between Lark and Lore is the next interconnected romance trilogy in the Fate of the Embered series. You can start with any trilogy within the series, but starting with Of Withering Dreams first is highly recommended. Fate of the Embered is one massive immersive world with three interconnected love stories and Rowyn does another amazing job with book 1 here for the start of the second series. The world building continues to be exceptionally remarkable and I just love this dark and decaying world. I love getting to learn more about Jace and Caelora who were introduced in the first trilogy, book 1 for Jace, and book 2 for Caelora (if I remember correctly). I feel like this is just the beginning to a much larger journey to come and I can’t wait for it!
If you love adult dark fantasy romance, why choose, morally gray characters, student/teacher tension, age gap, a hidden world & forbidden magic, power, control, & surrender, traumantasy & caretaking, and slow burn then I definitely recommend checking this out! But I do recommend starting with Of Withering Dreams first!
I devoured Between Lark & Lore. Caelorea, Jace, and Kaden have a very angsty, complicated relationship. You will be guessing throughout who loves who, why such animosity between them, damn, when will the tension finally explode!
Caelora is angry at everything life has handed her, her mother’s death, who her father is, being manipulated into hurting those who took care of her. She can’t control much, but she is on a mission to find the man responsible for all of it. Jace and kaden are along for the ride, and they each are learning so much about each other and themselves through all the twists and turns.
The world building is superb, the characters are each unique and you feel everything they are feeling because of the amazing writing. I loved the stories within the story. Kaden, Caelora, and Jace are on a mission together and their mission is one part of the story, but throughout the book we are also getting each of their individual stories. I loved the intrigue, angst, slow burn, twists and turns.
FANS OF Jennifer L. Armentrout, Carissa Broadbent, Raven Kennedy, and LJ Andrews WOULD Love this world and adventure!
Rowyn is such a beautiful writer truly. I really enjoyed Kaden and Caelora. For some reason, I didn’t personally connect with Jace as much but I think there is more to come for him in the next book. I definitely understand why he is important but I feel like I’m waiting for him to have his big moment.
So much has happened to Midst Fall and now we find out that more trouble is brewing. Jace, Lore, and Lark (Kaden) meet unexpected creatures and allies deep in the peeks while out searching for someone Lore desperately wants to find.
While in the new city, Jace finds himself spending many hours in the archives for an unexpected project while Lark and Lore are kindling a potential romance. The burn is slow but considering Lore’s past this is understandable. I love how Kaden considers her feelings in everything. Love consent kings.
Definitely read the summary about the first series or read the Fate of the Embered prior to reading this or you’ll feel a little lost. I’m definitely looking forward to what is next for Jace, Lark, and Lore.
As always this book was packed with amazing world building and a poetic way of writing that was beautiful. I was surprised that Caelora got a book since she wasn't a good stand out character from the Fate of embered series personally. But I was excited to read more with Kaden in it and just learn more about his POV and how he was dealing with things from the past. Jace had his own discoveries in this book which was nice and interesting. I don't see the connection from Caelora to Kaden but I felt the intensity Kaden felt for her throughout the story. I really enjoyed a lot of different paths that this book was taking but I felt like a lot of these paths were being touched on and then forgotten so it was starting to pile up and I couldn't grasp the real plot of the story. I also felt like the summary of the book hinted at a possible why choose situation but her relationship with Jace didn't seem like it could go that way or even should since he's been her guardian since she was very little. I'm really curious on how this series will unfold, all things considered.
After reading the first Fate of the Embered trilogy I was wondering what would happen to Kaden and I love that this was the start to his own journey. Caelora was another character I was happy to learn more about. Jace was kind of the perfect counterpart for Caelora and Kaden because he’s always so determined to be in control of himself and the other two have more of a wildcard streak to them. There was a lot of tension between Kaden and Jace in the beginning that I really enjoyed but I liked it better once it changed. All the things the characters learn about themselves were super interesting and honestly kind of game changers so I can’t wait to see how that plays out in the future. The slow burn factor of Kaden and Caelora was super satisfying and even though there’s only a smidge of spice in this, it was really good and I look forward to more. Hopefully🫣 The battle scenes and sparring scenes were written and choreographed so well that it really came to life. This was an extremely enjoyable read!
Loved this book and this series! Between Lark and Lore is the fourth book in the Fate of the Embered Series which has been absolutely amazing so far. We follow Caelora, who is searching for her father, an Elder, and the one responsible for her mother’s death. She’s accompanied by Kaden, the reckless healer whose easy charm masks deeper scars, and Jace, the stoic runemaster.
We met Caelora, Kaden, and Jace in the first three books and Adelaide teased us with hints at their backstories and deeper, complex personalities. Between Lark and Lore delivers. In this book we learn more about who they are, and we dive deeper into their pasts. It’s not pretty, it’s messy, and it’s real. They are all conflicted—with themselves and with each other. The tension is real. The banter and snarks are delightful.
This book picks up where Of Hollowed Stars left us, but there is no time to rest. The stakes continue to rise as secrets are revealed, ancient magic awakens, and tension escalates. The world is deep and complex, full of corruption and monsters, and meddlesome gods.
