Life is all about surviving for ex-Army helicopter pilot Hawk Gunn, until he rescues Lucky Sinclair and sparks fly, passion ignites, and they both learn to let go of the past and really start living.

Hawk Gunn has spent the last two years healing after his military career ended in a helicopter crash. Now he works with his brothers at Gunn Brothers Distillery, and to combat the guilt, remorse, grief, and undying memories, he uses his skills to find the lost and injured with his local search and rescue team. So when he finds his housekeeper near death in a ravine, he’s the perfect man to save her life. After all, she saved him first.

Lucky Sinclair does not live a charmed life. Abused by her sadistic father and dismissed by her indifferent mother, she endured, until one night her high school boyfriend murdered her whole family and went to prison. Years later, it’s her pen pal relationship with Hawk that makes life worth living.

It can’t be coincidence that Neil’s free and someone tried to kill her—more than once. Neil’s out on parole—and looking for revenge? It doesn’t make sense. He saved her. But someone wants her dead. As she and Hawk search for answers, the deeper they fall in love.

Hawk is on a mission to keep Lucky safe. But as evidence mounts and secrets unravel, they learn the shocking truth. The people who supposedly loved her were betraying her all along.

Lucky's life has anything but. The one bright spot is her quiet friendship of sorts with Hawk Gunn. She knows what it is like to be struggling which is why she does her part to provide comfort from afar. In reality she has a huge crush on Hawk but has never sought him out outside of cleaning his house.

Hawk realizes something is wrong when Lucky doesn't show up to his house. On instinct he goes looking for her, believing something is wrong and he ends up finding her close to death. Hawk makes a promise to Lucky and he is not going to relent, he knows she could be his one is taking his shot. First though he needs to figure out who is determined to get rid of her though. Can he keep her protected before they strike again?

Just what I was looking for, this was fantastic. Rollercoaster of a story where there are times I just wanted to cry. Lucky is a quiet storm of a girl, she has backbone to the point she surprises you. Loved Hawk he is a force to be reckoned with and his back story is fantastic. Going to back and check all the books this author has written.

I Got Lucky is Book 1 in the Gunns Blazing series and this is a new author to me. This story was full of secrets, danger, mystery with emotional/physical baggage from both characters that turns into healing and love. The story is good and I loved the connection between Hawk and Lucky.

When Hawk finds Lucky severely injured and dumped in a ravine and wooded area, nothing will stop Hawk from helping Lucky to heal and keep her safe. Lucky has not been so lucky lately, with different events happening to her and the latest of being targeted in one awful way.....will Hawk and Lucky find healing within each other and find out whom is responsible for Lucky to be injured...

Overall, this is a good story and I am looking forward to more from this series.

First Impressions
I Got Lucky is the newest release for Jennifer Ryan but it is loosely connected to her "Dark Horse Dive Bar" series and this is Hawk's book. This is a story that might not necessarily be for everyone has it has a more insta love type of vibe. I was more than okay with it though, because if you really take you time with the 1/3 of the story, you can feel the connection they have and how the danger the heroine is put in really capitalizes on the connection and only cements it to the point where they want to not waste time on games but acting immediately on what they feel for each other. This story swept me away and I didn't want to put it down. I love a good damsel in distress who clearly has been manipulated and abused for years and needs someone to fight for her.

First Line
The bar was packed, the music loud, but not so much that you couldn't hear the person next to you.

The Main Protagonists
The Hero: Hawk Gunn
The Heroine: Lucky Sinclair

Summary
I Got Lucky is a story where we have our heroine Lucky, but she hasn't had the best life. Her father abused her and her family was murdered and she barely survived. And she always believed her ex was responsible for it and is in prison for it. But when he is released due to a technicality, she fears for her life but not everything is as it seems. Because when she is drugged and attacked and tossed into a ravine, she barely survives when Hawk Gunn rescues her. Lucky has been working as his maid and cook for a couple of years and they both have been taking care of each other but its been slow as they both have inner scars. Hawk knows he isn't the easiest of men to be with a beautiful feminine woman like Lucky who deserves some softness and affection in her life. But when her life is put in danger, he will stand by her no matter what it takes to protect her...

What I Loved
I Got Lucky was a book that was a bit different than what we normally get from this author but I had a blast with it just the same. I loved what we saw in this story and I really was on board with it from beginning to end. I do wish we had gotten a prologue of some interactions between these two to see their relationship over the years. This isn't a traditional insta love as some readers will see it as. So I think some of those interactions would have helped with the insta feel in the story. But to be honest, I was totally fine with that plot. I was so easily captured by this one. I loved the take of who the villain is and that we see it happen in the beginning and seeing the characters come to the realization of who the true villain truly is. Its truly twisted what we see in this one and how we get a redemption of sorts for the ex who wasn't really the actual villian as is originally believed. The chemistry between Hawk and Lucky was so precious. I was so easily caught up in the moments between these two and didn't want to put it down. Definitely a story you can easily become consumed by.

What I Struggled With
Some of the personality of the heroine didn't always seem to fit especially towards the end. I was in love with seeing her find her own sassiness and strength but I feel like this aspect to her personality was too hidden in the beginning for it to feel authentic.

Overall View
I Got Lucky is a all consuming romance that digs deep into the human condition and the ability it takes to rise above the ashes and truly soar...

I Got Lucky is exactly the kind of romantic suspense Jennifer Ryan excels at — bruised hearts, high stakes, and a love story that feels like a lifeline instead of a luxury. A very solid 4‑star read that delivers heart, heat, and a mystery that tightens its grip with every chapter.

Hawk Gunn walks onto the page carrying a whole storm system with him. Ex‑Army helicopter pilot, survivor of a crash that ended his career, drowning in guilt he can’t shake — he’s the kind of man who saves others because he can’t figure out how to save himself. Working search and rescue is his penance, his purpose, and the only thing that quiets the noise in his head.

And then there’s Lucky.

Lucky Sinclair is the definition of resilient. Her childhood was a nightmare, her family was destroyed by violence, and the one person she trusted became the epicenter of her trauma. The fact that she’s still gentle, still hopeful, still capable of connection? That’s the real miracle. Her pen‑pal bond with Hawk is tender and intimate in a way that makes their eventual collision feel inevitable.

When Hawk finds her near death in a ravine, the emotional stakes snap into place. This isn’t just a rescue — it’s a reckoning. Someone wants Lucky dead, and the timing is too sharp, too connected to her past to ignore. The suspense builds beautifully as danger circles closer, and the unraveling of who’s behind it all is satisfying without being predictable.

But the heart of the book is the relationship.
Hawk and Lucky don’t fall into insta‑love — they fall into recognition.
Two broken souls who’ve been quietly holding each other up from a distance finally forced into the same space. Their chemistry is warm, steady, and deeply earned. Hawk’s protectiveness never smothers; Lucky’s vulnerability never weakens her. They fit.

If there’s a wobble, it’s that a few twists land early and some emotional beats could’ve used more breathing room. But the core — the healing, the trust, the slow unfurling of hope — lands beautifully.

A heartfelt, suspense‑driven 4‑star romance about survival, second chances, and choosing to live instead of just endure.

As I always do before I start a review on a Jennifer Ryan book I like to warn newbies that if you haven’t read any of her stories and violence against women is a trigger for you, as much as I personally love her work, I strongly suggest you avoid her stories. This book, like every other Jennifer Ryan book I’ve read, has scenes where our female protagonist ironically named Lucky, experiences violent attacks.
Our male protagonist in this story is Hawk Gunn, a now retired special forces helicopter pilot who suffers from severe PTSD after several tours of duty in the Middle East. It’s possible he appeared in earlier stories but my most recent recollection of Hawk is as the cousin of Nick and Mason Gunn (two brother FBI agents) in the Black Horse Dive Bar Series. Mason and his now wife Lyric make appearances in this story. As our story opens we learn that our female protagonist Lucky cleans Hawk’s house weekly as part of her work running a fairly successful home cleaning service. Lucky, who has experienced a lot of physical and emotional trauma of her own, recognizes a kindred spirit from the telltale signs she finds around Hawk’s home. She also is aware of Hawk’s reputation as a good man who volunteers flying helicopters with the local S.A.R. team. So she begins going above and beyond cleaning his home leaving him little notes of encouragement, leaving meals and desserts and books for him to read that she feels will help him. In return Hawk often leaves her notes expressing his gratitude for her kindness. Although they rarely if ever actually see one another they are both slowling falling in love with the other. This goes on for about a year and a half. Hawk afraid to actually express his growing attraction for Lucky and Lucky feeling Hawk is way out of her league quietly pining for him.
Lucky has had an extremely terrible life. Her father physically abused her both emotionally and physically. Her mother abused her emotionally and did nothing to stop her father from hurting her. She had her much younger brother Danny whom she loved dearly and tried to shield from their father's abuse. And she had Desiree who lived across the street from her and had been her BFF since they were born. Only Desiree really isn't much of a friend but Lucky is willing to take the scraps of friendship Desiree offers her when she's not picking on her and chipping away at Lucky's self confidence. Then at 17 Lucky falls in love with Neil and gives him her virginity. But when Lucky's family is found drugged and murdered with their throats cut leaving her the only survivor, Neil is accused of the crime. Because the murder weapon, a knife with his prints on it mysteriously disappears from the police evidence locker, Neil isn't convicted of her family's murders but he is convicted of possession and attempt to sell drugs he's been stealing from the veterinary clinic he'd been working part time at. As this story opens after serving seven years in prison Neil has been released because of a technicality when the police screwed up. We also learn that since Neil's release bad, sometimes dangerous things have been happening to Lucky. Which she of course attributes to Neil even though Jace the sheriff's deputy is unable to prove who is doing it.
As the story opens Desiree has convinced Lucky to come out to the local bar with her even though Lucky barely drinks and is too afraid of men to dance with them, definitely not to hook up with them. Desiree knows Lucky has a tentative relationship with Hawk Gunn and hopes Lucky can use her connection to hook her up with Hawk's brother Lincoln who along with Hawk and his brother Damon is the owner of the bar along with Gunn's Distillery. Desiree who needs to always be the center of attention gets jealous when she perceives all the guys In the bar are checking out modestly dressed Lucky and not her. Then when Lincoln who is aware that Lucky clean's Hawk's house and often leaves him delicious meals asks her to clean his house and rebuffs Desiree's advance, Desiree unreasonably gets even more pissed off at Lucky. She slips a drug into Lucky's drink and when Lucky passes out with Neil's help she drags her out the backdoor of the bar drives her to a remote location, strips her to her underwear and pushes the still incapacitated Lucky tumbling down a steep hill into a ravine where she leaves her to die. Lucky suffers several injuries on her way down the hill and lays there injured and exposed for 3 days until Hawk while out hiking finds her nearly dead. He administers immediately first aid and calls in a chopper to get her airlifted to the local hospital for treatment. He stays there in Lucky's hospital room for days holding her hand promising he won't leave her side. Hawk insists on taking Lucky back to his home so he can nurse her back to health and be close to her. And this is the start of their magical love affair. Unfortunately Lucky can only remember brief flashes of what happened to her after she was drugged. She thinks she remembers Neil being near her but can't remember anything about Desiree's involvement.
The rest of the story is Lucky and Hawk's passionate love story while Hawk and the sheriff's deputy Chase try to help Luck remember what happened that night and who dumper her into the ravine.
Excellent if not totally plausible story. My only real issues with it where the reappearance of the knife that allegedly was used to kill Lucky's family and then disappeared and what happened to Desiree's daughter Krystal towards the end of the story? Did her father get custody or did Lucky and Hawk raise her?

I'm having a really hard time finishing this book- not sure I will (stopped about 70% just couldn't continue). As it is, the volume of sex and lack of character building is so unlike her earlier books. I had such hope for a great HEA for Hawk but sadly I'm wishing he got a better story. I loved her stories for Dane and Bell, Rory and Sadie, Ashley and Beck, Morgan and Tyler, Elizabeth and Sam, Jenna and Jack, Lyric and Mason to name a few. But starting with Aria and Nick, her writing style has changed. Maybe it's her editor? Maybe there's a change for more graphic scenes and less character development that appeals to a younger market?

Lucky and Hawk's romance, with the exchanges of notes that brings them together is the real romance but sadly it's covered in the first few pages. Those notes would have added so much more to the romance and character development. And the villain was so easy to figure out- and it stinks that everyone in the book takes forever to realize what's going on. The reader should never be that far ahead of the characters.

Needless to say I can't recommend this book. I feel so bad for Hawk. I was really hoping he got a better romance. Perhaps I should just stick with the books from her earlier works that I love so much and accept that she has a new style that doesn't bring me my happily ever after. Damon and Lincoln, sorry dudes.

I Got Lucky (Gunns Blazing #1) Jennifer Ryan

This is the first book I've read by the author. Hawk and Lucky are fantastic! I Got Lucky is the first book in the Gunns Blazing Series. I read this book in one day.

Lucky hasn't been so lucky in life. First her dad abused her, then she wakes up drugged and family dead around her. Then she takes over her mother's business and gets Hawk as a client. She senses there is more to him than meets the eye and starts forging a bond with him that she doesn't think is real. Then she goes missing for three days. Hawk finds her and promises to stay. She tells him this: “Hawk, it’s okay because I know the real you. And I… Love you. You’re the strongest person I know. Inside and out. I know you’ve worked really hard to overcome your past. It must be frustrating and disappointing to feel like it will never end. Maybe it will. Maybe it won’t. No matter what, I’ll be here to help you through it.”

Hawk has pushed so many people away that when Lucky comes into his house once a week to clean he is happy. He gets upset with his brother because he was the last one to see Lucky before she disappeared. When going on a hike on a trail he didn't normally take it's his lucky chance. He finds Lucky. “I don’t know what you think you’re doing, but I’m going to choose to believe that you’re not actually trying to steal me away from your best friend. Because that would be a really shitty thing to do. And it will never happen. He says this to her so called best friend: “I’m not a cheater, or so fickle to drop her for you because you think you’re hotter in the sack than she is. What we have is special. A once in a lifetime kind of thing. So I’m going to believe that this is some sort of bait you think I’ll take and prove that I’m not good enough for your friend. I am a hundred percent dedicated to Lucky. She’s mine. I’m hers. From now on, it’s us, so get used to it. No amount of flirting is going to change it. And if you try to sabotage what we have again, I won’t be nice, because I’ll do anything to keep her and make her happy.”

Loving the cover and the dedication feels like an Irish blessing 🥰

“To you, my friends… May your luck never run out, you have love that never ends, hopes and dreams and true friends, and the one who will love you to the end.”

Lucky is out with her friend Desiree at Gunn brothers and let’s be honest Lucky really hasn’t had it easy and she’s very guarded and then the one person she trusted turns on her in the most cruel way and I feel sick to the pit of my stomach 🤮 ( her past collided with her present )she was left for dead in the wilderness but Hawk comes to her rescue 🙏 she’s a fighter that’s for sure !

Lucky took over her mom’s cleaning business and that’s how she ended up getting to know Hawk , while not in person but via books , notes and kind gestures while cleaning his home . Hawk has his own ghosts haunting him but when he comes across Lucky his heart sinks and he realises she’s more important to him than he realised and he’s desperate for her to hold on ….

The first few chapters got intense very quickly and I was on the edge of my seat ! I just knew if it started like this it could only get better and it did 😉

Hawk may come across gruff and grumpy but he’s a gentle and caring man and he so protective of Lucky and he’s just what she needs 🤗 but they’re actually each others healing balms 😉❣️

My heart aches for everything Lucky had gone through both as a child and an adult , the deceit and hurt caused by those she thought she could trust , it’s despicable and it’s a wonder she could trust anyone after that 💔all I want to say is expect the unexpected 🤯
I’m so grateful to Hawk and company for swooping in and showing her the meaning of life , love , family and friends 🤗

An epic read that had my hearting beating faster than a racehorse till the very end !

PS There’s a reason I’m not mentioning a certain persons name because she deserves no “ airtime” 😡

I got Lucky is the first book in the Gunns Blazing Series by Jennifer Ryan. This is a tense and emotional romantic suspense with a friends-to-lovers/pen pal romance, chemistry, passion, drama, tension, danger, damaged/broken MCs, intriguing developments, mystery, secrets, angst, and reveals the healing power of love.
This is the first book in what looks to be a series of standalones which will follow the Gunn Brothers (Gunn Brothers Distillery). Each book in the series will focus on its own particular couple- and this first instalment introduces us to Hawke Gunn and Lucky Sinclair.
With the name Lucky, you might assume she lives a charmed life – but that is far from reality. Lucky has been put through the wringer on so many levels – and unfortunately, her troubles are far from over. Hawk has demons of his own and the burden of the baggage he carries from his time as an army helicopter pilot weighs heavily on his soul. He returned home a shadow of his former self – not truly ‘living’ he makes the motion of ‘life’ by putting his time into the Gunn Brothers Distillery business, as well as working with the local search and rescue team. Then everything changes when he finds Lucky barely alive at the bottom of a ravine – thrusting them into a quest to find out who has put a target on Lucky’s back – and maybe just discovery that they hold the missing piece the other need to heal and be whole along the way.
Looking forward to reading the rest of the series…
Happy Reading…

Jennifer Ryan has been one of my favorite authors for over a decade, but her more recent (indie) offerings haven’t been up to her usual standard. That’s very much the case here, with the first Gunns Blazing book. It has some of the hallmarks of a Ryan book—tough “alpha” male, danger stalking our fair heroine, for example—but it’s also all over the place. The pacing simply isn’t right and the story becomes increasingly and unnecessarily convoluted. It feels like everything—and the kitchen sink—was thrown in to make it more dramatic.

It didn’t need all that. Stripped down to its bones, this is a good story: damaged hero finds and falls for a woman who is unlucky in life and in desperate need of his kind of protectiveness. But without a solid edit, the good bits are lost. It’s repetitive and the central mystery is clumsily foreshadowed to the point it isn’t even in the shadows; it’s right there for anyone to solve.

IMO, this book is missing the sure hand of a development editor (frankly, it’s also in need of a proofreader), but with some tightening and cuts, it has real potential. My favorite author is in these words, which is why I can’t bring myself to rate it lower. I just hope she finds her way as an indie author soon.

One final note: this cover is technically fine but it is not at all indicative of the story within. IDK who this young, polished, carefree couple is supposed to be, but it’s not Hawk and Lucky. The vibe is fun rom-com and that’s not it. It’s surprisingly only mildly angsty, but it does deal in murder, betrayal, abuse, PTSD, and more. Beware.

This book had me in my feels so badly. I resonated with this book so much. Lucky had been abused her whole childhood. Her father was sadistic and abusive. So much so that she doesn't like to be touched by others. Then her boyfriend murdered her whole family. Left to pay off all the debt her family owed she had to sell everything and take over her mother's cleaning business. Problem is that her ex is out on parole and things are starting to happen to and around Lucky. Hawk has been out of the military for a few years. With some serious ptsd and problems to sort out he's been keeping his distance, working on himself, and working for search and resuce. Helping resuce people give him a purpose and way to use his skills. He also works with his brothers at their distillery. Although he keeps his distance he and Lucky have a pen pal flirty type relationship going on. She cleans his house and sometimes leaves him food while he will leave her notes and books. What started as encouraging notes slowly turned into small steps towards healing. For them both. While out jogging Hawk finds Lucky naked and almost dead. He calls in emergency backup while trying to attend to her wounds. Near death he promises not to leave her side while they air lift her out. Someone is out to get Lucky. But who? As Hawk and Lucky get closer and fall for each other more, danger is sneaking up and it's ready to strike from the unexpected. Such a great book! I cannot wait to read more!!!!!

I Got Lucky by Jennifer Ryan is a fast-paced book with all the right elements of a protective ex-Army helicopter pilot turned Distillery owner and Lucky Sinclair, who is probably the unluckiest girl around. Her past is dark and twisted, full of blood and gore, and yet she has one bright spot left – Hawk, her pen pal. Can Hawk keep her safe as her past comes back with a vengeance? Or will he lose the one woman who understands him more than anyone else ever has?
I enjoyed the mix of danger, chemistry, and healing in this series for both Hawk and Lucky. Ryan really created a set of characters that, while wounded, really made you want to see them succeed, so that the wounds didn’t take them out completely, just slowed them down. The relationship between Hawk and Lucky was satisfying, with the perfect blend of tenderness and tension and enough pull to keep you engaged throughout the entire story.
For the first book in this series, there is a lot of promise here. I hope that this series continues and that each of the next sets of books pulls me in just as well as this one did, because I couldn’t put it down at all. I think if you are looking for a contemporary romance with a good amount of suspense, emotionally scarred characters, and a hero who is willing to go through hell for someone, then this is one you really need to pick up.

I Got Lucky is the title of this story but also what Hawk would be screaming from the rooftops. Hawk is 1 of our 2 main characters. A book the has some interesting twists and turns involving deception and friendship. The author presents them in an interesting way but it becomes easy to figure them out. However you feel for the character anyway when they happen.
Unfortunately, Lucky isn’t that lucky. Or is she. Ever since she’s been alone and her ex-boyfriend was put in prison for the cause, she’s dealt with a lot of torture and unexpected/unexplained events happening to her. Someone wants to hurt and/or even kill her and at the beginning of our story they did just that. She was drugged and left for dead. Being she survived the rest of the story is spent figuring out whodunit and keeping her alive and Hawk is just the guy to do so!
An admiration from a distance these two sent each other little love notes through books and food while Lucky cleaned his home. Now that he has her, he’s never letting go.
She could’ve died and the time is now. They both feel that way.
So whodunit? Who left her for dead?
The obvious is the ex but is it really him or is it someone we never thought would do such a thing. All that and more is answered when you jump on in. Take a chance, see if you figure it out along the way.. Happy Reading!

This is the first book in the Gunns Blazing Series. This is a romance suspense filled with past trauma, healing hearts, danger, secrets and lies and so much more. This author writes stories that grip you from the first page and doesn’t let go. This is Hawk and Lucky’s story.

Lucky hasn’t had an easy life. With an abusive father and mother that didn’t care and then again when her ex turned psychotic and murdered her family. Needless to say she has a lot of trauma to work through.

Hawk has trauma too. After a helicopter crash ended his military career he was left with a lot of things to work through.
Lucky and Hawk become pen pals of sorts as Lucky cleans for Hawk. They haven’t really talked but they have built a connection through the little notes they leave each other. This connection becomes a spark and lifeline for them both.

That is until Hawk finds Lucky injured. Could it be her ex that has been released coming back to harm her again or could it be someone she never would have expected. Either way Hawk is determined to find out who is targeting her and to protect her from further harm.
Could these two broken souls start to heal each other or will the secrets of the past prove too much for either of them to overcome.

This is a gripping romantic suspense story and the first book in a new series. Hawk Gunn is an ex-Army helicopter pilot whose military career ended following a helicopter crash. He now works with his brothers at Gunn Brothers Distillery, and he also uses his skills with the local search and rescue team. Lucky had an awful childhood with an abusive father and an indifferent mother, which led to her high school boyfriend Neil murdering her family. Lucky is Hawk’s housekeeper, who she has a pen pal relationship with, but they both realise their feelings for one another when Hawk finds her near death in a ravine. When it becomes clear that someone tried to kill her, Lucky wonders if it is Neil looking for revenge now that he is out of prison on parole. As the pair search for answers, Hawk is determined to keep Lucky save and as shocking secrets are revealed their relationship deepens. I found both Hawk and Lucky to be realistic and relatable characters whose chemistry came across clearly in the story. I enjoyed their slow-burn romance and how their relationship developed throughout the story. The suspense built with each chapter making this a real page turner.

I enjoyed reading this romance story. This is an author that I never hesitate to pick up as I know that I am in for a great romance story. One of the things I enjoy about this author is their creative characters that are written with a lot of heart and soul. I also enjoy their use of details that not only pull me into the story but made it realistic as well. This is a story about Lucky and Hawk. Lucky has not had the best of life and has a past that is tragic. Hawk has spent the last two healing from a crash and now looks for the lost and injured. Their pen pal relationship has kept Lucky going but now someone is after her. Will Hawk be able to keep her safe and find the truth? What happens with these two is something you don’t want to miss. I enjoyed the characters. They are engaging, connectable and well written. They made the story easy and entertaining to read. I enjoyed watching the growth of the plot as well as watching Lucky and Hawk’s relationship. This is a fast paced, hard to put down story that I truly enjoyed reading. I look forward to seeing what is next for this author. I highly recommend this book.

Hawk is sent on a rescue mission, as he sees Lucky in the bottom of the ravine he realises that this is more than an accident and that this woman needs help, with guilt still raw from his army career he is sent into a rescue mission with himself front and centre.

Lucky has not had the greatest start in life, her childhood was hard and brutal, when she trusted the wrong person you would think this woman would be hard and mistrusting but she still holds the soft nature and gentleness someone with her level of trauma should not hold.

As Hawk tries to help Lucky in whatever she needs and as they go along there is a recognition that they are good for each other and chemistry starts to build slowly, but can they move towards more.

This is a lovely story of strength, vulnerability and trusting someone again. The relationship between the two main characters drives the story along and in engaging and sweet to read. With all the tragedy within both their lives they are a shining beacon to each other.

This is book if full of suspense and action and is well written, I can't wait to read more.

This is a book about two lost souls finally finding eachother. Lucky has been cleaning Hawks house for two years. They leave eachother little notes and stuff every week.

Hawk was in the military and his career was cut short when he was in an accident and now he works with his brothers.
Lucky has had such a rough life. Her father was a sorry excuse for a man. He used to do horrible things to her but, she stayed to protect her little brother. Her ex is absolutely insane. He ended up drugging her family and then unalived them. Lucky has never been the same.

She goes to the bar with her best friend one night in hopes to catch a glimpse of Hawk but that doesn’t happen. However, she never made it home that night. Someone drugged her and rolled her down a side of a road and left her for dead. They almost succeeded but Hawk found her and rescued her. Now they are staying together to
Keep her safe and try to figure out who is after Lucky. These two are such a cute couple and I thought they were perfect for eachother. There’s a lot of suspense in this book and it will keep you hooked from the very first chapter.

This had me screaming at the end. Lucky Sinclair has just not been Lucky her whole life. Losing her family when she was a teenager was something she always thought about. Not really her parents but for her little brother Danny. But having them taken by your ex-boyfriend and him getting away with their murders is the worst part of the whole thing. As Lucky has been trying to live her life with the help of her best Friend Desiree, odd things just keep happening to her that no one seems to believe her about. Until her life is almost taken from her. Then she gets her Knight in a red cap and semi crush, Hawk Gunn. Hawk and Lucky form a bond that has been growing for the last two years as she has been cleaning his house. Small notes, Books they pass to each other, meals she cooks for him and other small gestures to know someone is thinking about him. As Hawk finds Lucky dying on a trail no one really uses, he makes his feelings known and vows that they will catch whoever did this to her. But as you read this story you think you have it all figured out until the huge secret drops at the end you never saw coming.

Hello suspense! This is one of those books that keeps you guessing. We follow Lucky a girl who has led a very difficult and traumatic life. Her dad abused her, her mom didn’t do much to help her, and her ex boyfriend went psycho and killed her family…yikes. Lucky ends up becoming a house keeper for none other than Hawk, a former soldier who’s military career ended in a crash…literally. They don’t actually talk to each other much in the beginning. They just leave notes for each other. Lucky also starts making meals and leaving them for Hawk. Now that he is retired Hawk works with his brothers (Gunn Brothers) at their distillery. Coincidentally when Lucky’s crazy ex gets out on parole someone tries to kill her. Luckily for her though Hawk is the one who finds and saves her. But was it really her crazy ex who tried to kill her? What secrets are being hidden, or possibly brought to light? Lucky and Hawk start looking for answers. Will spending all that time together fuel a romance? Will Lucky get the answers she needs? This is a must read and I can not wait to read book 2

Lucky Sinclair is the sweetest most unluckiest person to walk the earth. Hawk Gunn is an ex-Army helicopter pilot doing his best to go unnoticed and to be left alone. When he finds Lucky abandoned on a trail left for dead, he can’t help but go into protector mode. He will do anything to protect Lucky from any more unfortunate happenings. Lucky is just trying to piece together what is happening to her and why. Can the two of them figure out who is out to get her before it is too late?

This is the first time that I have read this author. I will say that there are some really terrible things that happen in this book but it does have the redemption story in the end for Lucky. There were several surprises for me through out the book as well. I was terribly sad that I share the name (kind of) with the villain. LOL I had high hopes for a minute! Kidding aside, this was a quick read for me because I needed to know what happened. The intrigue was well done. This is an adult book, meaning there are situations that could be triggering and explicit scenes.

I really love this story. The way it's written, the characters, the twists and unexpected ending makes for a perfect book!

Lucky, as anyone could guess, isn’t very lucky. She had a very abusive father, a mother who didn’t notice or didn't care about the abuse and a boyfriend that killed them…well at least now he’s an ex-boyfriend. You would think life HAS to get better right. Right? No such luck for Lucky. She tries to turn her luck around by growing her cleaning business and steering clear of relationships, friendships and people in general. She develops feelings for a client, Hawk, but he is just as distant as she is. He has his own trauma and issues from his time in the military. However, they still connect through notes, food and hope.

Another tragic twist forces these two to take that step towards each other. And it seems their luck has finally turned! But accidents and “things” keep happening to Lucky and I wonder if she will get her happily ever after.

Looking forward to the brothers' stories and more from this author!!

I Got Lucky is the first book in this series and what a start!
This was written in a way you the reader finds out who the bad guy is before the characters in the book and while that's ok in this it took a long time to get the characters caught up to the readers knowledge.

Lucky, despite her name, has been unlucky in life. Her one positive in life is when she cleans Hawk's house and they exchange notes about books.
I knew early on who was responsible for all the craziness that happened to Lucky but the amount of awful things and the history of it all was surprising and sad.
Through it all Hawk makes sure Lucky knows she worthy of love, trust and everything good in life. He lets her stand up for herself and is the rock she needs when she needs the assurance.

I cannot wait to read the rest of this series as I loved seeing the rest of the Gunn family and can't wait to see where their lives go from here.

Lucky Sinclair has NOT led a life that lived up to her name – an abusive father, indifferent mother and Neil, the only boyfriend who seemed to care about her, ended up murdering her entire family. Trauma would be an understatement, and Lucky has worked hard to build a close-knit, stable life for herself after Neil went to prison.

When local search and rescue team leader, Hawk Gunn, finds Lucky critically injured and near death in a ravine after a night out with friends and it turns out Neil is out on parole, it’s obvious that “someone” is trying to kill her. But as Hawk and Lucky investigate, they are about to uncover long-buried secrets and discover a shocking betrayal.

I loved the deep emotional connection of these two characters, who have been through so much trauma and yet are still able to open their hearts eventually. Just the right amount of twists and turns to keep you guessing too – I look forward to reading other books from this author!!

I got Lucky is the first book in the Gunn Brothers series (Gunn Brothers Distillery. This book is centered around Hawke Gunn and Lucky Sinclair. Lucky Sinclair is anything but lucky to start with in his book. She is put through a grind in all levels of her life. Her only cheering lifeline is her pen pal relationship with Hawke. Hawke comes with his own baggage, having served in the military and with his career ending with a helicopter crash, he has his own demons to confront. To get over the guilt, he works with the local search and rescue team.

As part of his search, one day he finds Lucky barely alive at the bottom of a ravine. Then begins the search to find the culprit who is behind Lucky’s life and all her miseries. Alongside is the journey of healing and the unfolding of a beautiful story between two broken souls.
I liked the book overall, the suspense keeps you going and the two protagonists are likeable. Looking forward to more in the series.

This is only the second book I have read by this author, but it has definitely made me want to read even more from them! It is the first book in Gunns Blazing series, and it lives up to its name with fast pacing. The character development was incredible and had me invested pretty much immediately. Lucky and Hawk have such interesting chemistry that it just draws you in and never lets go. It is just so cute and had me giggle and hold the book tight to my chest quite a few times. Something I really enjoyed was how these characters weren’t just picture perfect and have the typical cliché romance that’s all around now. They have dark pasts that leave them pretty wounded, but they haven’t given up all hope. I also couldn’t figure out where this story was going which is a huge bonus for me, so be prepared to feel surprised! I highly recommend picking this one up if you want to get lost in a book that you can’t put down.

I got Lucky by Jennifer Ryan is the first book in the Gunns Blazing series and was a well written romance that I did not want to put down. We are introduced to Lucky and Hawk. Hawk’s military career was cut short after a crash and he is now working with his brothers at the Gunn’s Brothers Distillery. Then we have Lucky who really has a rough life. Her dad abuses her, her mom never really cared, and her ex is completely crazy. Hawk finds her close to death and he is the right one to save her. Hawk need to keep her safe and they need to find out who wants Lucky dead.
This book gives is the small-town romance, the hero, the girl who needed saving, and suspense that will keep you guessing till the end. This book truly was a mix that had me in a hold from page one till the end. I look forward to reading more in the series!

I Got Lucky (Gunns Blazing Book 1) by Jennifer Ryan. This was a great start to the Gunns Blazing series. Its the story of Hawk who is retired military and he came back home to work at his family's DIstillery. Hawk is determined t never fall in love again so when he finds Lucy almost dead in a ditch. There is instant chemistry. Lucy has had a horrible start to life with her dad abusing her and her mom couldn't care less that she is alive. Throw in a crazy ex boyfriend and that is the extent of Lucy's life. Lucy's ex has been released from prison and after killing her whole family she knows that he is the one that wants her dead. Hawk decides he has to keep Lucy safe, no matter the cost. As Lucy and Hawk spend more and more time together they can't deny their feelings. As they dig deeper into the murder and why it happened they find themselves in more danger than they can imagine!

This one gave me exactly what I love in a romantic suspense. Danger, emotional depth, and a protective hero who will do anything for his girl. Their connection felt meaningful from the start, especially with their history as pen pals. When they finally come together in person, the chemistry is there, but it’s also emotional and healing, not just physical. The suspense side kept things interesting too. There’s danger, secrets, and that constant feeling that something isn’t right. It definitely kept me turning pages because I needed to know who was behind everything. I hope to see his brothers in future books. This was a solid start to the Gunns Blazing series. If you like romance with danger, protective heroes, and characters healing from the past while falling in love, you’ll enjoy this one.

Okay, I Got Lucky with this one—literally. Jennifer Ryan gave me everything I love in a feel-good romance and then some.
This story is sweet, a little messy, and full of those moments that just make you smile without even realizing it. The characters feel like people you actually know (or wish you did), and the connection between them builds in such a natural, easy way. Nothing rushed, nothing overdone—just good, heartfelt storytelling.
And let’s be honest… there’s something about a small-town romance that just hits different. The charm, the community, the little moments—it all pulls you in and makes it hard to leave.
This is one of those cozy reads you curl up with and don’t want to end.
