As a longtime Jack Dane fan, his latest release did not disappoint. This compact psychological thriller delivers everything you want in a single sitting.
What Works: Dane takes a familiar setup - a wife discovering her husband's affair with a younger woman - and transforms it into something genuinely gripping. My heart went out to Sheri immediately. The story shines in those tense moments where Sheri faces impossible situations and you're left wondering which choice she'll make.
The supporting cast elevates everything. Teddy and Allison bring necessary complexity, their presence pushing Sheri toward decisions that keep the tension mounting. Dane balances their roles perfectly, giving you just enough to invest without overshadowing Sheri's central arc.
Then comes the ending. The twist hit me completely sideways - something I genuinely did not see coming, which made the entire story stick in my head long after finishing. It's the kind of conclusion that makes you want to immediately reread to catch the clues you missed.
What Could Be Better: Honestly? Nothing. This is exactly what a short story should be - tight, impactful, and satisfying. Yes, I always want more from Dane, but this format serves the narrative perfectly. For anyone needing a quick psychological thriller fix, this delivers complete satisfaction in minimal pages.
Verdict: Death Will Do Us Part is a masterclass in compact suspense. Dane proves he can devastate you just as thoroughly in sixty pages as he can in three hundred. Sheri's journey, the mounting dread, and that knockout ending make this essential reading for thriller fans.
Perfect for: Commute reads, lunch breaks, and anyone who loves being genuinely surprised.
Jack Dane manages to pack a high-tension narrative into just 60 pages with Death Will Do Us Part. The story is entirely plot-driven, stripping away character development to focus on a relentless, fast-moving pace. A highlight for fans of Dane’s work is the subtle reference to a character from The Apartment Across the Hall, which creates a satisfying sense of a shared universe. The atmosphere remains consistently tense, building toward a shocker of a twist that lands with maximum impact. It is an impressive example of how a short thriller can still deliver a complete and jarring experience in a single sitting.
Exciting and riveting, fast-paced psychological thriller! This is the 2nd Jack Dane book I’ve read recently. I loved, “The Apartment Across the Hall”…I’m officially a follower! Dane’s smooth use of language and writing skill creates books that flow beautifully, so easy to read and enjoy! Totally unexpected twists with well-crafted storyline and excellent characterization! I reread a few sections of both books to rethink and imagine the turn of events. Totally recommend all readers in “Goodreads” and beyond to get on board with this fantastic, younger writer. Way to go Jack!
5⭐️! This was a short novella by Jack Dane, and I think I found a new favorite author!
This woman is UNHINGED! Think: Dear Debbie by Freida McFadden! 🫣😅
This woman- I don’t even have words for her. She’s convincing alright because there were points in the book I KNEW what was going on, but I still believed something she was claiming to be true through the book! 😳
You know it’s a good read if the author can allow the reader to see what’s actually happening, but is still able to making a shocking revelation! I highly recommend!
Such a quick, easy, and seriously good read! I flew through this one in no time. The pacing was tight, the tension kept building, and it totally held my attention from start to finish.
My only complaint? I wish it had been longer! I wasn’t ready for it to end. Definitely a fun, fast thriller that’s perfect when you want something gripping but not super heavy.
I picked up this novella on a whim and was pleasantly surprised. It was a fast, engaging read that I finished in under an hour. The twist completely caught me off guard—wow! If you’re looking for a quick story that still delivers an unexpected punch, this one is definitely worth your time.
Very short story, but still very good nonetheless. I like short stories, but I much prefer books you can really sink your teeth into. Short stories, for me, don’t leave me much of anything afterward. But if you like them, this would be one you would really enjoy.
Another great short story by Jack Dane. Loved the few twists and turns in the book. Maybe not a “psychological “ thriller but worth reading and will recommend
Good story well written but just as I was getting into it…. It ends. I am not a fan of short stories however I have read all of whole books written by Jack Dane and enjoyed them all.
What a wonderful little short story to read in between books. Jack Dane is always fast-paced & keeps my interest. I’ll continue to read everything he writes.
