Humanity has spent its time enjoying the peace that can only be had through blissful ignorance. For centuries, stories of things that go 'bump' in the night have been passed down and shared. When creatures of the night proved to be real, the best of America’s military came together to form an elite band of rapid response teams. Their mission: to face the challenge and keep the civilian populace safe from those threats and hide all evidence of their existence. Now, as the Monster Squad has begun to rebuild themselves from a crippling blow, they face not only the monsters of the dark, but some begin to question the loyalty of members within their elite group. Will they fight as one cohesive unit, or be torn apart by internal strife and fall under the crushing heel of evil? Will they actually contemplate forming an alliance with the very monsters they've been battling as a dark storm brews on the horizon...a storm that threatens not just the squads, but the lives of every human on earth.

What happens when you have spent your entire military career fighting monsters and keeping the human race safe only to discover that you are one of the monsters? An elite squad of men and women has been keeping the human race safe from vampires and werewolves and other paranormal “monsters.” What they didn’t know was that their superhuman strength and abilities to move at the speed of light was far more than a mere drug to heighten their innate skills.
In this book Jack returns to this squad a married man with a mother-in-law – Nadia and Natasha both have realized something dark and deadly is coming and they try to help the hunters. Bombarded with new information on the augmentation, the squad is fighting internally, struggling with the information that they are now werewolves. Not only do they have to accept what they are but now they are joining forces with vampires and others to defeat a common enemy. The Sicarii are deadly and making their moves – wait until you discover who is behind the Sicarii and what he is planning!
The author, Heath Stallcup did an amazing job with details, planning and executing a clear plot; the plot could easily have become convoluted and confusing. It is evident that Stallcup took his time developing characters, story lines and twists and turns. I did appreciate his paying homage to Mark Tufo (one of my favorite zombie authors as well) – when I heard the name of the ex-monster squad member I have to admit my mouth fell open. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
I have not experienced the first book yet, but plan to do so soon. I thought this book was a good segue into the next book in the series. Although I have not read or heard the first one, I can honestly say I will be finishing this series.
Jack Voorhies was a solid narrator. His talented voice made the characters realistic and different enough to tell them apart. There were no hokey or annoying voices – the characters were represented much like I envisioned. He seemed as caught up in the story as his listeners. He spoke with a rhythm that was engrossing. One knew when there was action coming as he began to pick up appropriately. Voorhies brought the characters to life in my opinion. He has moved onto my “love to listen to” list.
While I agree that the story is indeed remindful of Monster Hunter International, be warned that unlike MHI, these are NOT stand-alone novels. There aren't even any real "endings" between the books. Book 2 picked up literally from the incomplete ending of book 1, and ends literally in the middle of a conversation. That sort of thing is one of my pet peeves, and cost a star in my rating.
On the other hand, the story is interesting enough to keep me reading, and I'll recommend them without hesitation to fans of MHI. Just be aware you're getting into a multi-volume serial story, not a series of stand-alone novels.
Monster Squad, so far the only opponent they have been fighting are vampires and yet this just make it more interesting, maybe just maybe there are things out there much much more powerful, how about werewolves...... and now we are introduced to the Father of all vampires known as The Sicarii, a being that existed during the establishment of the Roman Catholic Religion, as if that is not exciting enough, the next part of the plan is to look for the Progenitor of the Werewolf race.........fun times ahead Monster Squads!!! Time to load up and start shooting!!!!!
While I really enjoyed the first book, and gave it a 5 star rating, I was hoping the second installment of the Monster Squad books would be even better, and it did not disappoint. There was a lot of back story added for both protagonists and antagonists, and the action scenes were really ratcheted up! The story of the Vampire and Werewolf origins is , well, biblical. No spoilers, but I thought it was a good touch. I loved all the back room dealing going on with the different vampire clans, and really enjoyed the cat and mouse aspect of it. I thought the actions scenes were well staged and believable, and the revaluations about the different characters motivations really kept me hooked. Good world building, as well as excellent character building make me gladly recommend this series. I cant wait for the next one to come out.
This was another build up book and while it is well done, the action has been pretty lacking for my taste. The way this one cuts off would have pissed me off if I had been reading it at the time of its release. Also, things have been getting a little Twilighty. There was some of it in the first book, but I was hoping it was just set-up for the rest of the series.
From the book: "Instead of jumping the border and taking jobs nobody wants" Bwahahah, right.
Wow.. When starting this series, I was excited that I was 8 books behind. Now, I'm excited to get to book three. You will not regret this purchase or time spent on this series. I have been upset to have to take care of the kids and home, when all I really want to do it binge read this series to book 8!!
A very intense and exciting read, this follow on book ramps up the tension as the Monster Squad does what it does best and searches out the real monsters. I found it easy to read and hard to put down. I immediately bought book three after finishing this as I don't want to wait to see what happens next.
Damn what a story! Love the addition of the new, "old" gunnery sgt. I bet I must have literally burst out laughing half a dozen times, just in the trip back to base from the airport. So juvenile, and funny, but so much truth! I remember a few of these conversations myself! Now, to go get book 3!
This book was great getting to be a really good Series of books how can you not love all your fav. horror monsters in one book the story is great and easy to follow i cant wait to start on the next one
I thought this book was the end of the tale but I just found out that there is a fourth and fifth in the works. Good story so far. i like the characters, intriguing religious element to the tale. Cant wait for the next one.
I still didn't get the character development I was looking for. This one also seemed dragged out with only one action scene and when the book ended I was like wtf. That means I liked it, but not enough to continue... probably. It feels like a vegetarian meal served to a carnivore...
Wow you brought it in spades. Well done. The monster lines are now so blurred even the bad guys are running. I liked the fast pace the twists and crazy surprises. Mitchell is gonna be a big part of book three I can hear her calling .
I love this series, but by far Gunny Tufo is the greatest monster Hunter of all. There was a part in the book where I was literally laughing out loud and getting funny looks by people walking by and it was worth it!
I really enjoyed this book and it is a great start to a new series for me. If you like the Seal Team 666 series of books like I do, you should like this one too. I can't wait to start the next one!
